When your first car as a teenager is a 1969 Cobra Jet; it's a good bet you have petrol running through your veins. Kicking off the new year, On the Move hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman are onsite and revved up for the world’s largest collector car auction, Mecum’s annual Kissimmee event. Boasting tons of sun and 3,500 vehicles, it’s the perfect locale for the guys to start off 2021. With so many cool machines, the guys each pick one of their favorites to focus in on. John is wrapped up by a 1970 Ford Torino Twister Special. Powered by a Cobra Jet 429 CI V-8 engine and paired to a 4-speed transmission, the muscle classic is one of just 90 produced that year and one of only 30 equipped with the 4-speed. This one was sold new at Jim Jenkins Ford in Independence, Kansas, and it has been returned to showroom-fresh condition courtesy of a restoration by R&A Motorsports in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Meanwhile, Matt didn’t select just one car but a trio in the form of three Chevrolet El Morocco’s crossing the block. He details how at first glance they may appear to be your average Tri-Five Chevrolet, but then goes into the story of how they were created to be classy alternatives to period Cadillacs. Matt also shares how seeing one El Morocco is rare and an exciting experience, let alone three together and up for bids. The desirable set includes a 1956 convertible, which is the only known example to exist, a 1957 convertible, the only remaining original example known to exist, and a 1957 hardtop, one of just 10 known to exist. Add it all up and it’s a unique slice of bespoke automobile history. Up next, Consignment Director Frank Mecum takes time from his busy auction block duties to join in on the conversation, sharing his thoughts and reflections on Mecum’s 2020 sales successes. Then, looking ahead, he shares his outlook on the new year ahead, including trends that he expects to continue to grow. In response to numerous listener requests, Mecum Auctions Director of Operations Harold Gerdes joins Matt and John to wrap up the show. Harold is responsible for company logistics and oversees the planning and execution of Mecum’s world-class events that take place around the country. Harold dives into the details of what’s involved with putting them together, including a close look at such areas as the onsite staffing, meeting numerous safety concerns and the required audio-visual and lighting equipment for both audiences and the NBCSN television broadcast. He also shares specifics of the ongoing and massive Kissimmee event, including how there’s more than 11 acres of tents at the fairground covering the sea of vehicles, as well as how some of those tents are some of the largest in the world. Then, the guys ask him about his automotive interests, which include fond family memories of riding in his dad’s 1951 Packard Convertible.

If the name sounds familiar to those in other forms of motorsport’s it's because Gardner was one of the most successful tractor pullers on the East Coast with his "General" turbine engine tractor on the NTPA tour. We will talk with Gardner on Wednesday Night about how he made out at the NMCA event and how he is preparing for the Gatornationals this upcoming weekend.
