Today's podcast features Laurent Meuwley. Laurent is the Head Coach for sprints, hurdles, and relays for the Netherlands. A former Swiss national coach and European Athletics Coach of the Year, he's known for guiding world-class athletes like Femke Bol and Dutch relay teams, pioneering the “Flyers vs. Diesels” sprint-type analogy and his comprehensive approach to training. Often in sprinting and speed training education, we get a small piece of the equation based on our social media algorithms or our immediate training culture. To fully understand speed training, we must look at both speed and environmental coaching concepts that span cultures. On today's podcast, Laurent discusses speed building on the level of the weight room, overspeed, speed endurance, and individual training factors. Laurent also talks about building a relay-based culture and a powerful training environment, along with many more nuances of building elite sprinters. And those are based on a test they do called the tensomeography test, where we check all the muscles individually and see how fast or slow they are, how strong or weak they are, how quickly they react, they can be activated or not." - Laurent Meuwly (13:14) "Because a lot of strength program are thought in terms of which muscles are specifically used for the movement. But we also have to think in which kind of muscle contraction, what kind of Muscle contraction is then used and for different muscle groups it's a different contraction. It might be concentric for some, eccentric for others, isometric for some muscles. So in the specific work this needs to be taken into account." - Laurent Meuwly (16:37) "If I take a hamstring exercise, when someone has struggled to activate the hamstrings quick enough, they might have an exercise where they are standing, laying on their shoulders up, one leg on the skateboard, the other leg in the air and they have to bring the skateboard back and forth under their butt as fast as possible." - Laurent Meuwly (22:07) "The propulsion phase is really important in running and especially in sprinting." - Laurent Meuwly (23:43) "The individualization in the gym is more to the way athletes are reacting in terms of hypertrophy. Some athletes would go a bit quicker away from max strength exercises, hypertrophy to be more in a velocity-based training, more in power than in strength development." - Laurent Meuwly (33:00) "I think in Europe we are using overspeed quite more than in the US at least in track and field, I would say every 10 to 14 days." - Laurent Meuwly (42:20) "A “flyer”, an athlete who is more speed based needs to be fast. And because speed is his or her strength, they also are going to recover from speed or even strength or whatever stimulates highly the nervous system quicker than athletes who are more endurance based and who are less talented for speed." - Laurent Meuwly

“Diesels are the bomb,” raves Kevin, “but there's some things that go along with owning a diesel that you've got to be aware of, and some days you can get bit.” To illustrate this point, Kyle Fischer of Hot Shot's Secret joins the guys to drop some science and offer some solutions for avoiding common pitfalls such as fuel gelling. “Diesel fuel in America sucks,” opines Fischer, adding that “we look at the problems that are caused by the fuel and how to protect these fuel systems.” Chief ingredients among these: lubricity additive, cetane booster, injector cleaner, water dispersant, rust and corrosion inhibitor, and fuel stabilizer.
Let's be honest, power is easy to make these days. Anyone with a modest budget can build a 1000hp dyno queen, but what about high-output engines that are expected to last for more than just a few full-power dyno pulls?Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inMixing a unique roots style blower (aka supercharger) with 8-into-1 headers for wow factor, Mitch Pullen of Pullen Spec Engines hasn't glossed over the essential parts to ensure this LS-based build will last. Improving rod angle, slowing piston speed, and choosing a stout valvetrain option over pure peak HP figures are all part of this, along with running a dual DBW throttle fuel-injected setup with 16 injectors over the carburettors you'd typically see on a setup like this. Why roots-type blowers are considered so inefficient compared to other supercharging and turbocharging options is discussed, along with individual cylinder trimming and running rich 0.80 lambda of E85 fuel to help cool combustion charges for 8 PSI of boost, making an easy 800hp during the Garrett International Drifting Cup at World Time Attack Challenge.TIME STAMPS:0:00 - Blown S130:30 - Why The LS0:54 - Roots Blower1:38 - Haltech NEXUS R51:55 - PDM & Can2:26 - 16 Injectors2:58 - Primary Injectors3:05 - Fuel Cooling & Lubrication3:12 - Trimming Injectors3:20 - Liquid Intercooling3:55 - Why A Roots Blower Is Considered Inefficient4:24 - Boost Pressure4:58 - Pre Supercharger Fuelling5:28 - Ethanol Fuelled5:35 - Fuel Mixture & Cylinder Trims6:12 - EGT-Based Fuel Trims7:45 - EGT Temperatureres8:03 - Transient Throttle Tuning8:32 - Acceleration Enrichment9:23 - Short-Term Fuel Trims10:47 - LS Engine Specs11:14 - Why Short Stroke?11:49 - LS Rod To Stroke Ratio12:43 - Dart Block13:30 - Power Level & 8,800 RPM13:55 - Cylinder Head14:30 - Rectangle Vs Cathedral Port
On this episode, Chris, Stephen and Willie discuss how two brothers from the Texas hill country with nothing to loose went from fixing diesel trucks in a cow barn to a brand new massive build shop that produces epic trucks. They also chat about how their humble upbringing and creativity has been instrumental in their success and lead them to a nationally syndicated TV show, Holden Bros. Restos on MotorTrend TV.A decade ago, Stephen and Willie Holden founded Holden Brothers Diesel in the face of adversity in a cow barn. Eventually, their adversity turned into success which lead them from that cow barn to their current brand new state of the art massive build shop, with a few shops in between. The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is called a compression-ignition engine (CI engine). This contrasts with engines using spark plug-ignition of the air-fuel mixture, such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine) or a gas engine (using a gaseous fuel like natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas). This episode of the Carmudgeon Show is a documentary on the Mercedes-Benz W201 — the 190E, which might be the most important Mercedes ever. == Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-ICONS == The W201-chassis 1982 Mercedes 190E was a game-changer, because it was a ground-up new car that allowed the luxury car maker to move into the small-car space. This is the full story of how the W201 came to be (hint: it was a response to US fuel-economy regulations) and the barely comprehensible about of engineering R&D that went into it — 4 billion Deutschmarks. Whether it's the diesel engine that gets the least amount of credit or the rarest of all Jeep CJs, Dakota Black restores and collects them both. The elusive Nissan SD33 diesel engine might be underrated, but it had a place in time when it powered American cars and trucks. Most think the CJ-6 was Jeep's rarest CJ model, but the uniquely designed, purpose built and misunderstood CJ-10 holds that title. Dakota Black and his family work together and share their unique interest in collecting and restoring SD33 engines and CJ-10s. Not only do they share their hobby, but they own and manage one of the Pacific Northwest's most respected automotive repair shops, Unlimited Service. On this episode, Chris and Dakota discuss how he ended up collecting and restoring these unique automotive oddities, the history behind the SD33 and CJ-10 and how they became part of American automotive history out of necessity. “Not Quite The American Dream” They may have gotten their start as the Filberts around 1980, but before too long they rechristened themselves Diesel Park West. They put out a string of singles like When The Hoodoo Comes and Jackie's Still Sad before their debut album Shakespeare Alabama hit shelves in 1989. To date the band has put out ten records including Decency, Thought For Food and their brand new one Not Quite The American Dream. Influenced by West Coast bands like Moby Grape and The Byrds, The Diesels have had quite a career—they've opened for Big Country, been signed by EMI, and had Belinda Carlisle of The Go-Gos cover their track I See No Ships. Singer John C Butler has put out fabulous solo albums—Worthless Bastard Rock is a personal favorite—and the band has released a Byrds covers album, live stuff and bunch of EPs along the way. But the fact remains: the Diesels don't stop. And why should they? There's pretty much nobody else who can jangle and chime and roll out hook after hook the way they do, and Not Quite The American Dream is further evidence that Diesel Park West remain vital, dynamic and as fabulous as ever. www.dieselparkwest.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
