The Kremlin has been using freelancers to carry out dirty deeds across Europe with increasing frequency — and those freelancers can be anyone. The strategy is as sinister as it is effective. The long-awaited JFK files have finally been released, and one of the most revealing details isn't what's in them—but what the CIA wanted to keep hidden. In this episode, I break down my initial reaction to the files, what this redaction could mean, and how it fits into the bigger picture of JFK's assassination, and American politics in general.—https://policecoffee.com/?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAACG7qmIkS3X8ivoZzZosZdSRJueTZ&gclid=Cj0KCQjw1um-BhDtARIsABjU5x6X9JVI5Dihvk6wiS1l5Ra9sToZWRHjj-F0vy3owqCssQ1Bpb0eGaQaAsF1EALw_wcB

Russia's Shadow Tankers Threaten an Environmental Catastrophe in the Baltic. And now a Maltese-flagged cargo ship filled with 20,000 tonnes of Russian sourced ammonium nitrate in drifting towards the UK coast. After the Battle of Culloden, a period of Cold War set in, lasting for the next two decades. The musket and cannon were replaced by espionage, propaganda, and psychological warfare, and the game of golf found itself in the midst of it all. The Hanoverian government, concerned about future Jacobite uprisings, targeted Scotland's first golfing societies due to their close ties to Scottish freemasonry and the Royal Company of Archers. These golfers, including prominent figures like William Saint Clare, James Weems, and John Rattray, were under surveillance. Despite the government's suspicions, the golfers posed little actual threat, but tensions remained high.

Dan and Tom decode SPY HUNT, a 1950 espionage B movie.  And they don't agree on this one. SPY HUNT was based on the book “Panther's Moon” by Victor Canning. It has espionage, a MacGuffin, a train, a dead drop, escaped black panthers, a budding romance, and quite a few interesting characters. Dan and Tom call out some interesting plot points that may have been influenced by earlier movies such as THE LADY VANISHES, THE 39 STEPS, and others.  In addition, you'll find out what a black panther really is.  We're sure you've lost sleep trying to figure that out. Above all, they look at some places where SPY HUNT may have influenced spy movies that followed, including one very interesting piece of dialogue.  How much influence did this movie have on the James Bond franchise? So, if you've seen SPY HUNT, do you agree with Dan or Tom on one? What did you think of this episode, SPY HUNT – 1950 Cold War Espionage Classic Decoded? After the Cold War, globalization accelerated at breakneck speed. Manufacturing, transport, and consumption defied national borders, companies made more money, and consumers had access to an ever-increasing range of goods. But in recent years, a profound shift has begun to take place. Business executives and politicians alike are realising that globalization is no longer working. Supply chains are imperilled, Russia has been expelled from the global economy after its invasion of Ukraine, and China is using these fissures to leverage a strategic advantage. Readers looking for a quirky Cold War spy story will find much to enjoy in Like Dolphins, the latest spy thriller from Andy Onyx. In the latest installment of his Barbell spy book series, spy author Andy Onyx takes us on a journey through the world of Cold War spy fiction. With a cast of intriguing characters and a plot that delves deep into the world of espionage, this episode is a must-listen for fans of cold war espionage novels. 'Now in Like Dolphins it was to place my existing characters of BREAKSPEAR (Bradley) and KESTREL (Wallace) in the last knockings of the Cold War, right at the end, in a plot like no other. The tag lines “Withnail and Spy” and “ A Cold War Trainspotting” set the scene of late 80s culture, music, style, the end of football hooliganism, the rising rave scene. We're at a critical point in the Cold War with an ailing GDR behind the Wall further de-stabled by reforming winds of Glasnost and Perestroika coming from the senior partner, the USSR. Add to that action in the hedonistic capital of Europe, Amsterdam.' n this episode, we learn that the plot centers around a key football game between Monaco and Dynamo Berlin and that football hooliganism plays a key role in the story. The introduction of ecstasy changes the culture of violence surrounding this subculture and sets the tone for the action to follow. The cast of characters is explored in depth throughout the episode, with each one complementing one another and creating tension when in the other's presence. The protagonist, KESTREL is tasked with rehabilitating BREAKSPEAR, a previous partner who had a psychological issue and was out of action. The dynamic between the two former partners is fascinating to read, and adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story. As Andy Onyx reveals more about the plot but keeping spoilers to himself (this is the way on Spybrary), it becomes clear that loyalty will be tested, and betrayal is a constant risk. Andy Onyx also recommends some must-read books for Cold War spy fiction fans, including "The Outsider" by Frederick Forsyth and "The Fist of God" by the same author. Andy also reveals some of the books on East Germany that he used for researching East Germany. Onyx has also created an eclectic Spotify playlist featuring music relevant to the story. From "Ride On Time" to "Sympathy for the Devil," the music adds another dimension to the storytelling. Overall, Like Dophins is a quirky, intriguing, and informative exploration of Cold War spy fiction. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the spy genre or just looking for something new to read, Like Dolphins is well worth a read. So what are you waiting for? Tune in to the latest episode to find out how the story unfolds.

The Cold War was a major geopolitical contest between the United States and the Soviet Union over predominance over the entire world. Unlike the previous two world wars, the two superpowers could not afford to go directly to war with one another due to the reality of nuclear weapons. As a result, the covert work of spies and secret agents proved to be the main battlefield where the two superpowers would contest each other. Not surprisingly, this period also witnessed the rise of enduring staples of spy fiction - most famously Ian Fleming's fictional spy character James Bond. However, as the common saying goes, the truth is often more fascinating than fiction. Many of the true stories of covert operations and spies are covered in Andrew Long's Secrets of the Cold War: Espionage and Intelligence Operations - From Both Sides of the Iron Curtain (Pen and Sword History, 2022). Andrew Long is a British military history researcher and author. His fascination with the Cold War began with a trip to West Berlin in 1986, traveling through Checkpoint Charlie to visit the East. Andrew's writing comes from a desire to make sense of an extremely complex period in modern history, weaving together inter-relating stories involving politics, ideologies, personalities, technological advances, and geography. There is still much to be told on this fascinating subject. After a successful career in marketing, Andrew relocated to Cornwall and took up writing full time. Stories From The Eastern West

Throughout the Cold War, both the Soviet Union and the United States used espionage extensively to gather information about the opposing side. To do this, they often relied on individual operatives to provide the information that technology often couldn’t. This episode will focus on one lesser-known Eastern European operative named Ryszard Kukliński, an officer in the Polish Army and a spy for American intelligence. We’ll discuss how Kukliński joined the army and his swift rise through the ranks. We’ll try to understand why he became disillusioned with the army and decided to work with American intelligence. Towards the end of the episode, we explore how his fascinating story can help us to better understand the nature of Cold War espionage. Like our show? Sign up for our newsletter! At the height of the Cold War, a seemingly unassuming Soviet electronics engineer reached out to several Americans he encountered in Moscow and offered his services. While he was initially ignored, the engineer, Adolf Tolkachev was eventually accepted by the CIA's Moscow station as a volunteer spy for the United States. Over a number of years, and under the nose of the ever-watchful KGB, Tolkachev passed on highly classified information about Soviet military technology to U.S. intelligence operatives. The documents he shared were of immense strategic value at a time when tensions between the two superpowers were at their peak.

David E. Hoffman‘s The Billion Dollar Spy: A True Story of Cold War Espionage and Betrayal (Doubleday, 2015) was first brought to my attention in a superb interview conducted with the author at The International Spy Museum. The story immediately captivated my attention and I realized this would be a perfect book to feature on New Books in National Security. I was not disappointed; Mr. Hoffman is as captivating a speaker as he is a writer, capable of weaving together immaculately recreated historical threads. The book is as compelling as it is revealing, delving deep into what Hoffman calls the “sweaty” reality of the intelligence battles fought behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. Drawing on extensive interviews, declassified CIA cables, and personal experience walking the very streets of Moscow where his subjects lived and died, Hoffman offers an impressive standard for future storytelling on the realities of spycraft. The Billion Dollar Spy is among the most fascinating and thrilling reads I have enjoyed in recent memory, and I highly recommend it to anyone at all interested in the Cold War or espionage writ large.
