Jefferson Morley - Scorpion's Dance - The President, The Spymaster and WatergateApr 5, 2023It is 50 years since the Watergate scandal; the scandal which changed America forever. Journalist Jefferson Morley has a fine pedigree in both journalism and research. He joins Ed Opperman to talk about his work on the CIA, his commentary on the National Security State and the recent revelations concerning the JFK conspiracy. He has researched the events and repercussions for democracy and society and the result is Scorpion's Dance. For the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in: The untold story of President Richard Nixon, CIA Director Richard Helms, and their volatile shared secrets that ended a presidency. Scorpions' Dance by intelligence expert and investigative journalist Jefferson Morley reveals the Watergate scandal in a completely new light: as the culmination of a concealed, deadly power struggle between President Richard Nixon and CIA Director Richard Helms. Nixon and Helms went back decades; both were 1950s Cold Warriors, and both knew secrets about the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba as well as off-the-books American government and CIA plots to remove Fidel Castro and other leaders in Latin America. Both had enough information on each other to ruin their careers. After the Watergate burglary on June 17, 1972, Nixon was desperate to shut down the FBI's investigation. He sought Helms' support and asked that the CIA intervene―knowing that most of the Watergate burglars were retired CIA agents, contractors, or long-term assets with deep knowledge of the Agency's most sensitive secrets. The two now circled each other like scorpions, defending themselves with the threat of lethal attack. The loser would resign his office in disgrace; the winner, however, would face consequences for the secrets he had kept. Rigorously researched and dramatically told, Scorpions' Dance uses long-neglected evidence to reveal a new perspective on one of America's most notorious presidential scandals.Website : Jefferson MorleyTwitter : Jefferson MorleyBook : Scorpion's DanceMarch 2023Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Investigative reporter Bob Woodward once noted that assassination was the Scarlett letter of American politics because targeted killings challenge the image of the United States as a liberal democracy and the driving force behind a rules-based international order. In his new book, Luca Trenta documents how assassination and assassination attempts have been a persistent feature in US foreign policy. The US government has relied on a variety of direct methods as well as more indirectly laying the groundwork for local assassins. Using primary documents and interviews, The President's Kill List meticulously documents how policymakers decided on assassination and the level of Presidential control over these decisions. The book analyzes the evolution of assassination policies and reveals how successive administrations - through private justifications and public legitimations - ensured that assassination remained an available tool. The podcast includes insightful comments on assassination and the Trump administration. The paperback is coming out in May 2025. Dr. Luca Trenta is an Associate Professor of International Relations in the Department of Political and Cultural Studies at Swansea University. His previous publications include an earlier book, Risk and Presidential Decision-making: The Emergence of Foreign Policy Crises (Routledge, 2016) and he hosts Out of the Shadows, interviewing authors and experts in intelligence and covert operations. In his public-facing scholarship, Dr. Trenta has appeared in a History Channel documentary called Secret Wars Uncovered (2020) and he regularly contributes to and collaborates with media outlets such as the BBC. James Bond, Ian Fleming's irrepressible and ubiquitous ‘spy,' is often understood as a Cold Warrior, but James Bond's Cold War diverged from the actual global conflict in subtle but significant ways. That tension between the real and fictional provides perspectives into Cold War culture transcending ideological and geopolitical divides. The Bondiverse is complex and multi-textual, including novels, films, video games, and even a comic strip, and has also inspired an array of homages, copies, and competitors. Awareness of its rich possibilities only becomes apparent through a multi-disciplinary lens. The desire to consider current trends in Bondian studies inspired a conference entitled ‘The Bondian Cold War,' convened at Tallinn University, Estonia in June 2019. Conference participants, drawn from three continents and multiple disciplines – film studies, history, intelligence studies, and literature, as well as intelligence practitioners – offered papers on the literary and cinematic aspects of the ‘spy', discussed fact versus fiction in the Bond canon, went in search of a global Bond, and pondered gender and sexuality across the Bondiverse. The Bondian Cold War: The Transnational Legacy of a Cultural Icon (Routledge, 2024) is suitable for students, researchers, and anyone interested in Cold War culture, makes vital contributions to understanding Bond as a global phenomenon, across traditional divisions of East and West, and beyond the end of the Cold War from which he emerged.

For the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in: The untold story of President Richard Nixon, CIA Director Richard Helms, and their volatile shared secrets that ended a presidency.Scorpions' Dance by intelligence expert and investigative journalist Jefferson Morley reveals the Watergate scandal in a completely new light: as the culmination of a concealed, deadly power struggle between President Richard Nixon and CIA Director Richard Helms.Nixon and Helms went back decades; both were 1950s Cold Warriors, and both knew secrets about the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba as well as off-the-books American government and CIA plots to remove Fidel Castro and other leaders in Latin America. Both had enough information on each other to ruin their careers. After the Watergate burglary on June 17, 1972, Nixon was desperate to shut down the FBI's investigation. He sought Helms' support and asked that the CIA intervene—knowing that most of the Watergate burglars were retired CIA agents, contractors, or long-term assets with deep knowledge of the Agency's most sensitive secrets. The two now circled each other like scorpions, defending themselves with the threat of lethal attack. The loser would resign his office in disgrace; the winner, however, would face consequences for the secrets he had kept.Rigorously researched and dramatically told, Scorpions' Dance uses long-neglected evidence to reveal a new perspective on one of America's most notorious presidential scandals.https://amzn.to/499Q0f3

Born in the midst of the Cold War, James Bond was often considered the consummate Cold Warrior. But within the 14 original novels, 9 short stories, 40 continuation novels, 10 Young Bond novels and 25 movies to date, the fictional reflection of the struggles between the West and the Soviet Union was far more complex than reality. Martin Brown and Ron Granieri are guests in the studio to discuss their new book, The Bondian Cold War: The Transnational Legacy of a Cultural Icon. Martin and Ron, along with their fellow editor, Muriel Blaive, who wasn't able to attend this gathering, have written and gathered a volume of essays that examine the Bondiverse. They join host Gen Lester to discuss the impact 007 has had on the entertainment world, the culture war, and the very real worlds of espionage and diplomacy.

I am a Cold Warrior. I grew up in the heat of it, and for the final decade of it, I was directly involved. It was intense. It was personal, and it left me with a profound sense of accomplishment. But unlike the shelling of Ft. Sumter (1861), or the invasion of Serbia (1914) or the Poland (1939), the actual beginning of the Cold War is a bit more… nebulous. One could argue that the roots of the Cold War was in the politics and stresses of the pre-war years and the inevitable ideological struggle between communism and the liberal western democracies. But when did it actual… you know… start? What if the whole thing started with a crying baby? Igor Gouzenko in 1946Public Domain In September of 1945, a young Soviet embassy staffer walked in to the office of the Ottawa Journal, carrying a briefcase. He asked to see the editor of the paper, he hesitated and chose not to reveal his reason for the visit. Later that day, his resolved steeled, he returned, but was told that Editor was not in the office. The disappointed and nervous young man left and went home. But the next day, his request for Canadian Citizenship would be the catalyst for the next forty-six years of the Cold War… --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/plausibly-live/message

In this episode, Matt and Sam join Moira Donegan and Adrian Daub — co-hosts of the new podcast “In Bed With The Right" — for an in-depth look at the life, times, and work of the late Midge Decter, who died in 2022. Decter was inspired by a distinctly conservative, mid-century American reading of Freudian psychology, mobilized in defense of traditional family hierarchies, which made her an important link between neoconservatives and the religious right — unsurprisingly, she helped found or served on the boards of numerous conservative organizations, including the Heritage Foundation, Committee for the Free World, and the Independent Women's Forum, among others. Her essays, books, and memoirs represent an anguished counter-revolt against the sexual liberation movements of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, and her trajectory from (ostensible) New Deal liberal to anti-feminist Cold Warrior proves a perfect subject for Know Your Enemy. Decter also was married to Norman Podhoretz (another subject of KYE lore) and the mother of John Podhoretz, current editor of Commentary magazine. Vicki Morgan, mistress to department store heir and Ronald Reagan confidante, Alfred Bloomingdale, lived beyond her years and died before her time—the victim of a brutal murder. Seething with power, intrigue, sex and obsession, it's a ringside seat into the darker habits of the world's rich and powerful. The Guys Who Spied for China“The Guys Who Spied for China” is a roman a clef, exposing Chinese Espionage Networks during the eighties and nineties. It is the quirky story of how two disparate men uncovered an elaborate spy operation that had functioned on American soil for nearly four decades. Through fate and serendipity, Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll, meets Johnny G Man, a vaunted scientist and the ultimate Cold Warrior. What they helped unmask was a network of home grown spies in California and throughout the United States. As a result, newspapers ran relentless headlines depicting Chinese Espionage practices in the United States. The year 1985 was pronounced by the news media as “The Year of the Spy.”“This is a new twist on the spy drama. While providing details of events that were often swept under the rug, this very personal and often darkly humorous tale captures what it feels like to be suddenly thrust into the shadowy world of espionage. You get to feel what it's like to be there. The Guys Who Spied for China is set largely in California, in the Santa Monica Mountain Range, just above Beverly Hills. What's remarkable is that most of this story is true.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, Philippine Chinese were Southeast Asia's most exemplary Cold Warriors among overseas Chinese. During these decades, no Chinese community in the region was more vigilant in identifying and rooting out suspected communists from within its midst; none was as committed to mobilizing against the People's Republic of China as the one in the former US colony. Ironically, for all the fears of overseas Chinese communities' ties to the PRC at the time, the example of the Philippines shows that the "China" that intervened the most extensively in any Southeast Asian Chinese society during the Cold War was the Republic of China on Taiwan. Kung Chien Wen's Diasporic Cold Warriors: Nationalist China, Anticommunism, and the Philippine Chinese, 1930s-1970s (Cornell UP, 2022) tells the story of the Philippine Chinese as pro-Taiwan, anticommunist partisans, tracing their evolving relationship with the KMT and successive Philippine governments over the mid-twentieth century. Throughout, he argues for a networked and transnational understanding of the ROC-KMT party-state and demonstrates that Taipei exercised a form of nonterritorial sovereignty over the Philippine Chinese with Manila's participation and consent. Challenging depoliticized narratives of cultural integration, he also contends that, because of the KMT, Chinese identity formation and practices of belonging in the Philippines were deeply infused with Cold War ideology. Drawing on archival research and fieldwork in Taiwan, the Philippines, the United States, and China, Diasporic Cold Warriors reimagines the histories of the ROC, the KMT, and the Philippine Chinese, connecting them to the broader canvas of the Cold War and postcolonial nation-building in East and Southeast Asia. Kung Chien Wen is an Assistant Professor in History at the National University of Singapore. His research straddles the fields of Chinese migration and diaspora, the Cold War and decolonisation in Southeast Asia, and modern China and Taiwan in the world. In this episode, I respond to a recent PBS "Frontline" episode on the Ukraine-Russian conflict, "Putin and Five Presidents". This show, while purporting to be "journalism" showed itself to be nothing more than war propaganda. I cover why we should question three people prominently featured in the documentary, two of whom are currently driving American foreign policy. 1. John Bolton - the foreign policy retread who never seems to retreat from public view in spite of his marked track record of failure and demonstrated track record of incompetence. 2. Anthony Blinken, the well credentialed, but gullible and weak U.S. Secretary of State 3. And, of course, Joe Biden, who in the documentary is portrayed as the wise and heroic Cold Warrior who sees through Putin's lies. We'll cover why should question the narrative given by our largely weak and ineffectual foreign policy leaders and discuss the types of qualities that we have in our leaders and why so many weak and incompetent leaders somehow continuously rise to the top. This one might make you question why PBS should be such a cheerleader for war. They have become the equivalent to RT for the Russian state, a propaganda arm of the state department. You should think about that the next time you make your donation to PBS. Finally, while I am by no means going to start a Vladimir Putin fan club, I continue to find it bizarre for the PBS war cheerleaders to continue to state that he is only some type of zombie drive soulless monster that has duped the Russian people and Russia does not have any legitimate security concerns. I do believe they do have some concerns and that it is not hard to imagine another Russian leader taking the same position. If you don't want your blood pressure raised, you might want to skip this one. I doubt I'll persuade any of you, but I just had to get this one out since we continue to be led by such mind blowingly incompetent leaders. If you like peace and are anti-war, you should wake up and start questioning the grand narrative offered by the Establishment. In my next episodes, I'll be returning to less controversial topics, depending upon how this episode is received...
Can the Golden State Warriors' 2nd unit play the San Antonio Spurs' 2nd unit EVERY NIGHT?!! Patrick breaks down the Warriors' thorough annihilation of the lowly Spurs at Chase Center 132-95 – the kind of game they desperately needed. The starters got rest and the young guys got productive developmental minutes that will hopefully pay dividends sooner rather than later. The Spurs are not a good team overall but we'll take it. Jordan Poole reminded us what he could do and guys like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody flexed their potential in positive ways. Unfortunately, though, James Wiseman did not get in until garbage time. (0:00) Intro (1:56) Will the real Jordan Poole please stand up? (10:01) Jonathan Kuminga is slowly getting better every game he plays (12:16) Everyone in on the 2nd unit – except James Wiseman (13:25) Anthony Lamb was 5-6 from 3?!! (15:00) Moses Moody calms down and plays within himself (17:03) Donte DiVincenzo ejection costs chemistry minutes (18:20) James Wiseman's out of sync garbage minutes (20:01) Run-TMC and Tom Tolbert broadcast was highly entertaining WATCH, LISTEN, & SUBSCRIBE TO OUR NEW YOUTUBE CHANNEL: youtube.com/OaklandWarriors BUY AN OAKLAND WARRIORS SHIRT! oaklandwarriors.myshopify.com SUPPORT THE SHOW ON PATREON! patreon.com/OaklandWarriors CONNECT WITH PATRICK: twitter.com/PatrickEpino CONNECT WITH THE POD! oaklandwarriors.com bio.link/warriors twitter.com/OaklandWarriors instagram.com/OaklandWarriorsPod youtube.com/NationalFilmSociety BUY US A COFFEE: buymeacoffee.com/OaklandWarriors EMAIL US AT: oaklandwarriors.com@gmail.com LEAVE US A VOICEMAIL AT: 323-863-6044 THE BASKETBALL PODCAST NETWORK: thebasketballpodcastnetwork.com MUSIC BY Paper Son paperson.bandcamp.com soundcloud.com/paper-son If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800- GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537) (IL/IN/LA/MI/NJ/TN/PA/WV/WY), 1-800- NEXT STEP (AZ), 1-800-522-4700 (CO/KS/NH), 888-789-7777/visit ccpg.org (CT), 1-800-BETS OFF (IA), 877-8-HOPENY/text HOPENY (467369) (NY), visit OPGR.org (OR), or 1-888-532-3500 (VA). 21+ (18+ NH/WY). The Guys Who Spied for China “The Guys Who Spied for China” is a roman a clef, exposing Chinese Espionage Networks during the eighties and nineties. The year 1985 was pronounced by the news media as “The Year of the Spy.” “This is a new twist on the spy drama.

On this edition of Parallax Views, a previously unpublished conversation with John D. Wilsey, associate professor of church history at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, about his book God's Cold Warrior: The Life and Faith of John Foster Dulles. In past episodes, John Foster Dulles and his brother Allen Dulles have been discussed critically for their role in 20th century U.S. foreign policy. John Foster Dulles served as a Secretary of State and his brother Allen Dulles was a Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Both were major figures in the Cold War and were crusaders against communism. Previous Parallax Views guests such as Andrew Bacevich, Greg Poulgrain, and, most notably, Stephen Kinzer, who wrote The Brothers: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War, have all been extremely critical of the Dulles legacy. John D. Wilsey, although sharing many of those criticisms, was interested in examining John Foster Dulles from a different angle. Namely the role of Dulles' faith in his endeavors as a diplomat and Cold Warrior. Specifically, what was the influence of Protestant Christianity on John Foster Dulles? In this conversation we delve into the theological framework that informed the ways Dulles thoughts about diplomacy and his view that Soviet communism was an existential threat to the U.S. We delve into the ways in which diplomat George Kennan found Dulles' framework and the religious influence on it to be dangerous and Manichean in nature. We also look at the way in which Dulles believed that the Church would play an important role in the fight against Soviet communism. Other issues covered include moral law and Christianity, the early life of John Foster Dulles, Christian nationalism (a subject that Wilsey has written extensively on), the view of the Cold War as a Manichean battle between good and evil, the paradoxes and contradictions of Dulles' thought and diplomacy, Protestant liberalism, the Federal Council of Churches, WWII, the Cold War and the threat of nuclear annihilation, Dulles as product of his time, U.S. covert wars during the Cold War, comparing and contrasting Martin Luther King and John Foster Dulles (Wilsey devotes a whole chapter to this in his book American Exceptionalism and Civil Religion: Reassessing the History of an Idea), and much, much more. Those looking for a conversation about whether Dulles was right or wrong in his views may be disappointed by this conversation. Wilsey's book is ultimately a religious biography of Dulles rather than a critical look at his role in foreign policy. However, I believe it nonetheless sheds light on Dulles and his thinking regardless where one stands on his whether his influence on U.S. foreign policy was positive or negative.
As the title suggests, this is the moment where we hand off the story from contemporary Russia to the USA's number one Cold Warrior, a former candy magnate who founded the most successful and influential anti-Communist movement in our nation's history. The John Birch Society is truly the forerunner of today's unhinged right-wing conspiracy culture--the proto-Qanon, if you will. So let's examine what they were all about, starting with the man who founded and led the society for a quarter-century, Robert Welch Jr. See you with more in a couple of weeks. The Human Action Podcast wraps up the year with none other than the venerable Professor Paul Gottfried! This is our final show focused on the Old Right, the early 20th century political tradition which animated later libertarian figures like Murray Rothbard. How was this great legacy of peace and freedom on the Right—the Old Republic—lost to Cold Warriors and neoconservatives? Nobody is a better sociologist of American conservatism than Dr. Gottfried, and nobody is more compelling and erudite when it comes explaining how the Right went so horribly wrong (hint: former Commies). Lots of great names discussed, from Rothbard and Nock to Kirk, Strauss, Jaffa, Buckley, Meyer, and even Gore Vidal. Don't miss this show!
