Jefferson Morley - Scorpion's Dance - The President, The Spymaster and WatergateApr 5, 2023It is 50 years since the Watergate scandal; the scandal which changed America forever. Journalist Jefferson Morley has a fine pedigree in both journalism and research. He joins Ed Opperman to talk about his work on the CIA, his commentary on the National Security State and the recent revelations concerning the JFK conspiracy. He has researched the events and repercussions for democracy and society and the result is Scorpion's Dance. For the 50th anniversary of the Watergate break-in: The untold story of President Richard Nixon, CIA Director Richard Helms, and their volatile shared secrets that ended a presidency. Scorpions' Dance by intelligence expert and investigative journalist Jefferson Morley reveals the Watergate scandal in a completely new light: as the culmination of a concealed, deadly power struggle between President Richard Nixon and CIA Director Richard Helms. Nixon and Helms went back decades; both were 1950s Cold Warriors, and both knew secrets about the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba as well as off-the-books American government and CIA plots to remove Fidel Castro and other leaders in Latin America. Both had enough information on each other to ruin their careers. After the Watergate burglary on June 17, 1972, Nixon was desperate to shut down the FBI's investigation. He sought Helms' support and asked that the CIA intervene―knowing that most of the Watergate burglars were retired CIA agents, contractors, or long-term assets with deep knowledge of the Agency's most sensitive secrets. The two now circled each other like scorpions, defending themselves with the threat of lethal attack. The loser would resign his office in disgrace; the winner, however, would face consequences for the secrets he had kept. Rigorously researched and dramatically told, Scorpions' Dance uses long-neglected evidence to reveal a new perspective on one of America's most notorious presidential scandals.Website : Jefferson MorleyTwitter : Jefferson MorleyBook : Scorpion's DanceMarch 2023Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

When her plane ran into difficulties there was no rescue or recovery vessels in the area, possibly because of poor navigation which had forgotten the latitudinal time difference and therefore made a navigational error.Despite searches – which have continued for decades throughout the sea and nearby Nikumaroro island, no trace of the plane, Earhart or Noonan has ever been found. Sean Howe - Thomas King Forçade - AGENTS OF CHAOS - High Times & the Paranoid End of the 1970sSep 27, 2023Sean Howe joins Ed Opperman to discuss his book, Agents of Chaos, which focusses in on the legendary iconic, revolutionary publication High Times. The life and times of High Times'  enigmatic founder Thomas King Forçade, an underground newspaper editor  and marijuana kingpin who—between police raids, smuggling runs, and  outrageous stunts—battled both the US government and fellow radicals. At  the end of the 1960s, the mysterious Tom Forçade suddenly appeared,  insinuating himself into the top echelons of countercultural politics  and assuming control of the Underground Press Syndicate, a coalition of  newspapers across the country. Weathering government surveillance and  harassment, he embarked on a landmark court battle to obtain White House  press credentials. But his audacious exploits—pieing Congressional  panelists, stealing presidential portraits, and picking fights with  other activists—led to accusations that he was an agent provocateur. As  the era of protest faded and the dark shadows of Watergate spread,  Forçade hoped that marijuana could be the path to cultural and economic  revolution. Bankrolled by drug-dealing profits, High Times would be the Playboy of pot, dragging a once-taboo subject into the mainstream. The magazine  was a travelogue of globe-trotting adventure, a wellspring of news  about “the business,” and an overnight success. But High Times soon threatened to become nothing more than the “hip capitalism”  Forçade had railed against for so long, and he felt his enemies closing  in.Assembled from exclusive interviews, archived correspondences, and declassified documents, Agents of Chaos is a tale of attacks on journalism, disinformation campaigns,  governmental secrecy, corporatism, and political factionalism. Its  triumphs and tragedies mirror the cultural transformations of 1970s  America, wrought by forces that continue to clash in the spaces between  activism and power.------------------Sean Howe is an American journalist and writer. She inhabited Andy Warhol's Factory scene, circulated among feminists and the counter cultural underground, charged men money for conversation, despised "daddy's girls," and outlined a vision for radical gender dystopia. Jeremy Kuzmarov - Warmonger - How Clinton's Malign Foreign Policy Launched the US Trajectory from Bush II to BidenNov 17, 2023During  the 2016 presidential election, many younger voters repudiated Hillary  Clinton because of her husband's support for mass incarceration, banking  deregulation and free-trade agreements that led many U.S. jobs to be  shipped overseas. Warmonger: How Clinton's Malign Foreign Policy Launched the Trajectory from Bush II to Biden,  shows that Clinton's foreign policy was just as bad as his domestic  policy. Cultivating an image as a former anti-Vietnam War activist to  win over the aging hippie set in his early years, as president, Clinton  bombed six countries and, by the end of his first term, had committed  U.S. troops to 25 separate military operations, compared to 17 in Ronald  Reagan's two terms. Clinton further expanded America's covert empire of  overseas surveillance outposts and spying and increased the budget for  intelligence spending and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a  CIA offshoot which promoted regime change in foreign nations.   The  latter was not surprising because, according to CIA operative Cord  Meyer Jr., Clinton had been recruited into the CIA while a Rhodes  Scholar at Oxford, and as Governor of Arkansas in the 1980s he had  allowed clandestine arms and drug flights to Nicaraguan  counter-revolutionaries (Contras) backed by the CIA to be taken from  Mena Airport in the western part of the state. Rather than being a time  of tranquility when the U.S. failed to pay attention to the gathering  storm of terrorism, as New York Times columnist David Brooks frames it,  the Clinton presidency saw rising tensions among the U.S., China and  Russia because of Clinton's malign foreign policies, and U.S. complicity  in terrorist acts.   In so many ways, Clinton's presidency set  the groundwork for the disasters that were to follow under Bush II,  Obama, Trump, and Biden. It was Clinton--building off of Reagan--who  first waged a War on Terror ridden with double standards, one that  adopted terror tactics, including extraordinary rendition, bombing and  the use of drones. It was Clinton who cried wolf about human rights  abuses and the need to protect beleaguered peoples from genocide to  justify military intervention in a post-Cold War age. And it was  Clinton's administration that pressed for regime change in Iraq and  raised public alarm about the mythic WMDs--all while relying on fancy  new military technologies and private military contractors to distance  US shady military interventions from the public to limit dissent.Jeremy Kuzmarov talks to Ed Opperman about his surprising and highly researched new book.BookBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

But that's not always a good thing; West comes across to many as a troubled man, despite his many media appearances and public addresses. This could be due to the media's portrayal of him as a slightly madcap or off-kilter pundit, a mascot for stupidity. But West is not stupid; he appears to be someone with strong and often offensive opinions; whether he has bought into the adage that ‘bad publicity is still publicity' and therefore worth having to keep the ‘brand' alive. With his recent declaration to run for President, David Olsen has added to his already well stocked vault of information about Ye. Roger Rapoport - Searching for Patty Hearst: A True Crime Novel Nov 20, 2023Roger Rapoport joins Ed Opperman to discuss one of the most controversial kidnapping cases of the twentieth century; Patty Hearst. On the night that Patty Hearst  was kidnapped in 1974, journalist Roger D. Rapoport, was a short drive  away in his El Cerrito home. He quickly became one of the primary  reporters covering the saga as it unfolded in real time. His reporting  gave local and national readers a window into one of the most bizarre  and polarizing crimes in U.S. history. Now, fifty years later, he has  written a novel, Searching for Patty Hearst,  that draws heavily from that time. In this compelling new book, he  explores alternative theories of the crime and delves into the complex  psychology of many of the key actors in a drama that kept the country  riveted. Using the techniques of fiction, Rapoport gives voice to much  of the story that fell outside of the bounds of journalistic coverage.  "I wrote this novel because I believed the American public deserved  nothing but the truth," he says. With a wry sensibility and insider  knowledge that Rapoport is one of the few people to possess, Searching for Patty Hearst,  goes beyond the tabloid headlines to tell the story in all its depth.  Rapoport takes on such questions as: Why did Patty participate in the  kidnapping of a high school student hours before six of the SLA  kidnappers were killed in a firefight with the Los Angeles police  department? Did celebrity coroner Thomas Noguchi, whom Rapoport  interviewed, mishandle the autopsies of six SLA victims? Why did Patty's  lawyers dump her fiancée Steve Weed as a key witness at her trial at  the last minute? It's often said that fiction can offer insights into  the truth that reporting can't. If that is the case, the story of Patty  Hearst, the SLA, and the kidnapping that carved them into the American  psyche just may be told for the first time with Searching for Patty Hearst.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Ed Opperman's guest today is Lynn Crook. False memory syndrome is a go-to diagnosis for memories which, when recovered, seem to have no corroborating evidence. There's a whole world of research into False Memory Syndrome, the causes and effects of ‘remembering' things which never happened. But the syndrome has also become a useful tool in discrediting those whose recollections are clear enough, yet lack substantive evidence. From Her Amazon; When states allowed adults who were molested as children to sue for damages, accused parents went on the offense. The parents claimed the accusations were false memories implanted by therapists. The parents established a non-profit and invested millions in a PR campaign to promote themselves as falsely accused, and to dismiss crimes committed against children as false memories. As evidence, they offered the story of an older brother who convinced his younger brother he was lost at a mall. The false memory story went viral. The popular press and psychology textbooks failed to challenge false memory claims. Individuals who challenged false memories were silenced. The author explains how her successful lawsuit against her parents helped her uncover the rest of the false memory story.Lynn Crook, M.Ed., has a Master's Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Washington (1970). Lynn was herself a therapist when she recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse. Lynn Crook, MEd, successfully sued her parents for damages in 1994, based on a corroborated claim of childhood sexual abuse.Book: False Memories - The Deception That Silenced MillionsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweather's car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. Schools closed. Men with rifles perched on the roofs of their houses. The National Guard patrolled the street. If there is a cultural version of PTSD, the town suffered from it. Starkweather and Fugate's capture and arrest, and the resulting trials about the killing spree, received worldwide coverage. The event would serve as the inspiration for the movie Natural Born Killers and Springsteen's iconic album Nebraska. Today, the story has dropped far from the national consciousness. With new material, new reporting, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Fugate, the tale is ripe for an updated and definitive retelling. In Starkweather, bestselling author Harry N. MacLean tells the story of this shocking event and its lasting impact, a crime spree that struck deep into the heart of the heartland.Harry N. Hank Harrison - Soaked in Bleach / Books The Dead : A social history of the Haight-Ashbury experienceFebruary 22From the archives the late Hank Harrison joined Ed Opperman to talk about the murder of Kurt Cobain. Why is no one taking his evidence forward?Hank Harrisonis a writer and researcher whose special areas of interest spread widely across a plethora of subjects, but unlike many other researchers, this hasn't dulled his attention to detail in any of them. The father of Courtney Love, he talks candidly to Ed Opperman about his estranged daughters' relationship with Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Cobain had a troubled life suffering from depression and the pressures of being the lead in one of the most iconic bands of the 1990s.Cobain died on April 5, 1994, and was found dead in his Denny-Blaine, Seattle homewith gunshot wounds. Cobain had previously been discharged from hospital and also received visits from Seattle PD as a matter of being a danger to himself. Calls requested from his wife, Courtney Love.Harrison details a story of twists and turns, of half-truths and outright lies that made up the investigation into the singers death and the ramifications that followed; he makes his case, as he does in his book, that Courtney Love had a great deal more to do with the tragedy than either the law or the mainstream media would report. In an almost bizarre symmetry, Denny-Blaine, Seattle is also known as ‘Harrison'.Hank Harrison died in February 2022 with the case still reverberating across the decades. Perhaps we will never know the truth of the matter. But we can, with Hank's legacy of research, make an educated guess.Soaked in Bleach is a 2015 American docudrama directed by Benjamin Statler, who co-wrote and produced it with Richard Middelton and Donnie Eichar. The film details the events leading up to the death of Kurt Cobain, as seen through the perspective of Tom GrantBooks The Dead : A social history of the Haight-Ashbury experience; The Dead by Hank Harrison (1980-10-24)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Some sustain life-long injuries and struggle with things like trauma, PTSD, CPTSD, depression, anxiety, abandonment, nightly night terrors, chronic pain and more! Their ability to form healthy relationships is forever impacted and often their connection to the family that sent them away completely severed. You might think this can't happen in the U.S.! This incident sparked a nine day manhunt for Dorner ending in suicide.Christopher Dorner was born June 4, 1979 in New York. He spent his childhood living in Los Angeles, transferring between multiple schools in the area. After graduating from Southern Utah University in 2001 Dorner joined the Navy reserve. On February 1, 2013, 2 days before he committed multiple homicides, he was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Lieutenant. While Christopher Dorner was in the Navy reserve he joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 2005 and completed his training in 2006. A year later in 2007 Dorner filed a report a Complaint against his training officer Teresa Evans for using excessive force against a mentally ill man whom they arrested. Dorner claimed that Evans kicked the person that they arrested in the face while he was on the ground in handcuffs. His claims could not be substantiated and so were dismissed. Dorner was fired from the LAPD in 2008. He appealed his case multiple times, but each court affirmed the decision of the LAPD. Dorner claimed that racist colleagues had worked to discredit him and end his career. His final appeal was denied in late 2011.But there's more to this story than the above quote would indicate.

A political machinator, he was simultaneously viewed as a genius strategist and a villainous shadow depending on where you stood in the spectrum. And if you stood in his way...A ruthless and cunning adversary, Cohn had a complicated private life. Being gay in America in the mid twentieth century was not an easy life; so much so his desire to exterminate the presence of gay or lesbian members of parties and staff by any and all means. He was possibly driven by his own self-hate. In a fascinating insight into politics, the mob and the mentoring of a would-be Tyrant, Cohn is a fascinating study in Machiavellian cruelty and scheming.
