James Bond, Ian Fleming's irrepressible and ubiquitous ‘spy,' is often understood as a Cold Warrior, but James Bond's Cold War diverged from the actual global conflict in subtle but significant ways. That tension between the real and fictional provides perspectives into Cold War culture transcending ideological and geopolitical divides. The Bondiverse is complex and multi-textual, including novels, films, video games, and even a comic strip, and has also inspired an array of homages, copies, and competitors. Awareness of its rich possibilities only becomes apparent through a multi-disciplinary lens. The desire to consider current trends in Bondian studies inspired a conference entitled ‘The Bondian Cold War,' convened at Tallinn University, Estonia in June 2019. Conference participants, drawn from three continents and multiple disciplines – film studies, history, intelligence studies, and literature, as well as intelligence practitioners – offered papers on the literary and cinematic aspects of the ‘spy', discussed fact versus fiction in the Bond canon, went in search of a global Bond, and pondered gender and sexuality across the Bondiverse. The Bondian Cold War: The Transnational Legacy of a Cultural Icon (Routledge, 2024) is suitable for students, researchers, and anyone interested in Cold War culture, makes vital contributions to understanding Bond as a global phenomenon, across traditional divisions of East and West, and beyond the end of the Cold War from which he emerged. James Bond was probably at its most popular in the late 1970s. NBC, seeing an opportunity to right the ship after many unsuccessful shows to end the decade, jumped on the Bondian spy bandwagon with A Man Called Sloane which, like the Bond movies, had numerous attractive females, working both for the good guys and the bad ones. What had promise quickly bottomed out in the ratings, making this a 3-month wonder.

My guest today is the writer Charlie Higson, author of On His Majesty's Secret Service, the latest Bond continuation novel. Written to coincide with King Charles's coronation and the 60th anniversary of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the book brings Bond into the modern era in a narrative that identifies very real geopolitical threats with some good old Bondian adventure. For those of you to whom the name Charlie Higson his familiar, that's because he was one of the writers and performers of The Fast Show, a cult British comedy show from the mid-90s. In this episode, Charlie and I discuss his literary tastes through the four books that have shaped his work, as well as his creative practices, and of course the way to achieve a new rendition of the world's most fabulous spy. Modern Bond is less anchored in mid-Century wartime solemnity, and more attuned to the nuanced global landscape of 2024, which made for a really refreshing read. From his diverse reading selections to his personal take on the character, Charlie's insights were both enriching and hilarious. Whether you're a Bond enthusiast or just generally a lover of literary discussions, this episode is an absolute treasure trove of insight and inspiration – and not one to be missed! Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Charlie's four books were: Gormenghast, Mervyn Peake (1946-59) Pop 1280, Jim Thompson (1964) The Watcher, Charles Maclean (1982) From Russia with Love, Ian Fleming (1957)
Another rankings episode coming your way today as we get into the nitty gritty of your favourite franchise by ranking all the unique gun barrel sequences that (mostly) start every single film! Why has Colin failed to show up again? Why is Die Another Day set to once again get blasted? What does Aaron Carter have to do with anything? Why does Only Fans have to do with anything? Are we surprised to learn where poo comes from? Why does Timothy Dalton look like he needs to do a poo? Why do we want so many of these gun barrel poses on a poster on a wall? Why could we watch Pierce Brosnan walking all the time? Which names from Bond are the most Bondian sounding? And are we pro or anti knee? Get your fix, get your bullet and get your talking ready to go in another epic episode! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Pre-Title thrills are unique DNA for 007 films. Without them, it's hard to imagine the franchise as we do. In this episode, we resurrect our "rank-a-thon" from its slumber and try to calculate a clean line through all the Bondian preludes.
Michael attended a talk at the Union League of Philadelphia called "James Bond Beyond The Cold War" and so enjoyed what he heard that he welcomed Dr. Ronald Granieri in for a conversation on the book he has co-authored, "The Bondian Cold War (Routledge Studies in Espionage and Culture)." Original air date 26 January 2024. The book was published on 1 September 2023.
The Japanese assignment continues with a mission report from the world's busiest train station. Antony and David relate their remaining Tokyo adventures, including cherry blossom viewings and visiting a location from The Wolverine (2013). Their next report comes from aboard a ‘Romance Express' (like the one referred to by Tanaka in the novel of You Only Live Twice) travelling from Kyoto to Osaka. Before getting there, they share what it was like to stay in a traditional Japanese inn (as Ian Fleming did when researching Thrilling Cities). They also talk about how they found Kyoto, including its gorgeous temples and gardens (not of the poisonous variety) and ‘all the shrines in the world'. After all of these spiritual experiences, they head for the extreme contrast: Universal Studios in Osaka. While queuing to buy lunch in Super Nintendo World, they talk about different fandoms and speculate about what a 007 theme park might be like. Finally, they discuss public bathing Japanese-style (as in, completely naked), the Japanese musical of Casino Royale, a visit to Himeji Castle (the ninja training school from You Only Live Twice), taking the fastest bullet train back to Tokyo, finding the best Martinis in Tokyo Disneyland and how they managed to have a Bondian adventure on a reasonable budget.
With attacks on LGBTQ (especially transgender) youth by Republican-controlled U.S. state legislatures, the war in Ukraine, and WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner's captivity in Russia, it's been a year of living dangerously for the queer community. Part 1 of our 2022 news review covers these major stories, easing the pain with satire by John Oliver and Jon Stewart, and a salute to the Bondian spy-adversary homoeroticism between “Skyfall” stars Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem. This week we kick off the New Year and Japanuary with a double dip of classic anime from the 1980s. For centuries a treaty between the demonic Black World and our own has kept both sides living in relative peace. A peace enforced by the Black Guard. As the timeframe of the original treaty draws to the end, radicalized extremists from the Black World begin a campaign to stop a new treaty from being signed. Human Taki and Black Worlder Makie are tasked with protecting the ratifying human signatory. Will they be able to deliver him safely? Will the radicals succeed in breaking the peace? Can Taki suppress his Bondian sexual compulsions? Can anyone stop molesting Makie? Who will make it out of Wicked City. Magical, super powered, and ginger A-ko Megami, and her best friend C-ko Kotobuki, are starting their first day at a new high school. Unfortunately, they immediately land in the sights of Biko Daitokuji, a jealous rich kid with a murderous mecha building hobby, and intergalactic forces speeding their way to Earth searching for their lost princess. Will Biko steal away C-ko? Will the aliens find their royal? Will A-ko ever make it to class on time? Just what is going on with Project A-ko? All that and Kevin drags himself across the holly jolly finishing line, Dave doesn't understand the appeal, and Tyler goes completely digital. Join us, won't you?Episode 238- Wicked Project

*This episode was recored in September 2020 Hello dear listeners! Oh boy that week between Christmas and New Year's is always a bit of a challenge, isn't it? A massive holiday in the rear view mirror and another one just days away. We all ate and drank to our hearts content, business won't really resume as normal until after Jan 1st, plus we were editing like mad to get that 2-part Christmas Special done. Oof. We kind of feel like coasting this week, no? What to release, what to release?...Oh, what about that episode we did in September about a French-language comic book from Belgian-American graphic novel writer Stephen Desberg and illustrator Bernard Vrancken? Yeah, the one about a James Bond-esque character named Larry B. Max but is like if 007 worked for the I.R.S. instead of MI6 and uncovered unlawful money dealings committed by heinous people like Nazis? Yeah, that one's been done and ready to go for 2 months but we never knew when to release it. Good enough. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a relatively brief discussion about a special comic book series from Europe with some intense, unmistakable Bond vibes. Think of it as ending 2020 on a discovery...or started 2021 with a discovery, depending on when you listen to this. Just for the love of god remember to pay your taxes!
“But James, I need you.” “So does England.” And so begins one of the greatest pre-title sequences in Bond history. This week we’re joined by the one and only Susie Vanner, who played her brief, but essential role in the opening scenes of The Spy Who Loved Me to perfection. In addition to our chat with Susie, Tom & JW talk about the recent news of No Time To Die’s delay to April 2021. November was not enough, so will another 6 months bring us Bondian joy or yet another delay? All this and more on this week’s episode of James Bond Radio. [Susie’s Interview begins at 18:12] Edited by JBR Agent Michael Kirwan.

In this second episode of the Man Talk series, our Dutch Jameses and Felixes continue their discussion about all things Bond. Making sure to be far away from the prying ears of any blond masseuses that might be lurking around, they discuss the following topics: - What are some of the Bondian things you've done (recently)? - What's your favourite Bond decade and why? - What are some of your favourite non-Fleming Bond novels? - What is your favourite James Bond spoof? - Between 2002 and 2006 the franchise seemed to be in a bit of a crisis (again!). What you remember from this period and how did you feel at the time? They discuss their fear for another Die Another Day, the fantastic special features on the DVDs and becoming a proud Bond fan again after watching Casino Royale with your friends. Why Spy Hard has the best credits sequence of all Bond spoofs. How you can scientifically decide what your favourite Bond decade is (and how there is only one acceptable answer to that question). Judith Finell - Judith Finell, Music Service Season 2/ Episode 8 You probably didn't watch, but on a Saturday night in April of 1983, "The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E.: The Fifteen Years Later Affair," aired on NBC. Trust me on this; it was a classic of 1980s television - paunchy middle-aged heroes, central casting villains, backlot sets, stock footage explosions - The 12-year-old me could not get enough. Our intrepid heroes even cross paths with a fellow spy - a suave Brit, wearing a dashing tux, driving an Aston Martin (complete with the license plate, "JB"). His car featured cool gadgets, he had a starlet on his arm, and there was that memorable James Bond theme. "James Bond!!! They got James Bond - Cool" The 12 year old me was - again - thrilled out of his mind. The thing is, "they" didn't, "get" James Bond. They got an actor (admittedly, the actor happened to be George Lazenby, reprising his role as James Bond, so there wasn't much question), they got an Aston Martin, they even got the James Bond theme (sort of). All the clues were there, I was supposed to think it was James Bond, but they never once uttered the words, "James" or "Bond." The music was the giveaway, it sounded "Bondian," it was almost the famous Monty Norman theme from the 1960s, but it just wasn't. The ersatz, "NBC Saturday Night Movie" music came right up to the edge of being James Bond but was afraid to jump. That's the subject of this podcast. A few weeks back we pushed our podcast with Judith Finell, Judith was the lead musicologist in the "Blurred Lines" case involving Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and the Marvin Gaye State Estate. This episode is part of 2 of that interview. When we finished discussing the subtler points of copyright and plagiarism we ended delving into another area of Judith's expertise. "Sound-Alikes." Frankly, since that Saturday Night in 1983, I've always been fascinated by these, "almost" songs. TV throughout the 1980s and 1990s were full of them. Songs where it was clear the producers wanted a top 10 hit but also apparently didn't want to pay top ten prices. So what does it take to come right up to the edge in music? How can you evoke the James Bond theme, without paying James Bond Prices? We also discuss Stairway to Heaven, the sound the Transporter makes in Star Trek, the Mission Impossible theme, and a little 45 record McDonald's gave away in the 1990s.
This week we're joined by Anders Frejdh, the man behind one of the biggest Bond websites, From Sweden With Love. As a hardcore Bond fan, Anders has built the largest collection of Bond memorabilia in Scandinavia, has interviewed many Bond alumni including no less than 3 James Bonds (George, Roger & Daniel), and was a key organiser for the Mallorca Film Festival’s tribute to director Guy Hamilton. What's even cooler than that? If you keep your eyes peeled during Quantum of Solace, you'll even spot him on screen. Tune into this week's JBR for some Bondian banter with our man from Station S.
Groomed as a potential leading man and heartthrob for the Hollywood studio system of the 1950s, George Nader went from a debut in an acknowledged camp classic (Robot Monster) through roles alongside the likes of Tony Curtis, Maureen O’Hara, Esther Williams, Hedy Lamarr and John Saxon, eventually winding up in the career-defining role of FBI G-man Jerry Cotton in an unforgettable series of two fisted German action films that drew equally from the Bondian excess of the Eurospy craze and the wild and wooly vibe of the Edgar Wallace krimi. With their gritty vibe, surprising stunt sequences and dark undertones, these 8 films even seemed to draw from the contemporaneous NYC sexploiter, while bearing enough lineage with the Wallace (and arguably, Mabuse) films (whose recurrent director Harald Reinl helmed three entries, and whose go-to composer Peter Thomas composed the films’ jaunty theme and provided most of their scoring) to elevate the second tier Hollywood expat to the second most popular film star in Germany! Join us as we return from a long hiatus to zcover these highly entertaining films, as we discuss the “first gay action hero”, George Nader and the Jerry Cotton series!
