And this is where both Kate and I experienced some hope and hopefully you will too.Since many of you were not able to be there with us, we wanted to be able to share with you so that you can start to see some of the hope too.Episode 66 with Kate: “Breaking Down Coercive Control” - https://www.buzzsprout.com/1991648/episodes/13665588Please leave us a review or rating and follow/subscribe to the show. Language shapes how we see ourselves, our experiences, and our healing journey. In this episode of The Rising Beyond Podcast, we're diving into why words matter for survivors of domestic violence—how they can be used to manipulate and harm, and how they can also be reclaimed to empower and heal. What You'll Learn in This Episode: ✔️ The power of survivor language vs. the gaslighting words abusers use. ✔️ How trauma-informed language can support healing while victim-blaming language hinders it. ✔️ The role of the media and family court in shaping narratives around abuse. ✔️ How abusers weaponize language to maintain control—gaslighting, word salad, and blame-shifting. ✔️ Why naming experiences like coercive control, post-separation abuse, and trauma bonding is so validating. ✔️ The impact of self-talk on your recovery and how to reframe harmful internalized messages. ✔️ How to reclaim your narrative and choose empowering language for yourself. Why This Matters:Language isn't just about words—it's about power, control, validation, and healing. When survivors don't have the right words to describe their experiences, they can feel lost or even doubt their own reality. But when they do? It's like turning on a light in a dark room.Glossary: www.risingbeyondpc.com/glossaryPlease leave us a review or rating and follow/subscribe to the show. This is what happened to my guest, Lorraine Marshall. She received defamation charges against her after writing her book titled, “Post Separation Abuse. Betrayal and Abandonment. We'd love your feedback! What resonated for you in this episode? What do you want more of?Transparency is a requirement for any meaningful change in our family court system for survivors of domestic violence and narcissistic abuse.  This is extremely apparent when you hear the horror stories of survivors day after day of their time and retraumatization in family court. And just recently, the curtain has been pulled back to allow the world to see what is really going on when a survivor of domestic violence tries to protect her children in family court.  Today I am talking with two survivors with their own horror stories who have both received media attention on their cases.Rachel Pickrel-Hawkins was recently in the news after being jailed for protecting her children.  And while the media reported several things incorrectly (which will be corrected in this episode) it shed the light on courts ordering reunification therapy when there are significant concerns of sexual abuse with what turns out to be an unethical therapist.Erin Siegal's case was in the limelight several years ago on her experiences with unethical and harmful court evaluators and other legal professionals.  This case and reporting were at the start of the movement here in Colorado that allowed Kayden's Law and other laws to be passed to help start court reform.  She continues to be threatened with gag orders to silence her advocacy. We need to continue the momentum and continue to shine the spotlight on what is really going on in our family court system.  So that survivors are not silenced.  Where to find Erin and Rachel -Erin - https://linktr.ee/fortitudeflourishRachel - https://www.tiktok.com/@mount.simon.minis?_t=8qQwZPeFfit&_r=1 https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550070298795&mibextid=LQQJ4d Please leave us a review! What if you as the survivor could use your expertise on your ex and your family to get a better deal in divorce? This is what we are discussing today; the different ways you can use your knowledge and voice to get a settlement agreement with your ex, even if only for some of the concerns, instead of leaving it all up to the cookie cutter decrees set by most family court judges.  If you have a case that needs a custom plan due to things like substance use or abuse, then the tips and tricks in this episode may be exactly what you are missing. Julie blends professional insights with her personal story of navigating a high-conflict custody dispute. She avoids sharing too many specifics to respect her ex and children, she explains how her background in dispute resolution helped keep their family out of the courtroom, despite major challenges. Julie specializes in helping law firms enhance client experience (CX) through customized training and support. Outside of work, she volunteers to support parents navigating divorce, ensuring the safety and well-being of their children remain central. The Secret to Speaking Up: Practical Strategies of Negotiation During Post Separation Abuse Workshop | November 14th, 2024 12 to 1:30 p.m., MST Register Here - https://mailchi.mp/risingbeyondpc/speakingupWhat You'll Gain:Clarity on the Challenges: Understand the emotional and legal obstacles you'll face as you speak up, and how to prepare for them.Confidence to Use Your Voice: Learn how to find your voice amidst trauma responses. Please leave us a review! Leyden, also with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office while they, along with two other HCSO Deputy couples, were vacationing in St. Augustine.  Leyden killed himself.   Since that fateful night, Bruce has been on a journey of grief, learning, discovery and advocacy – seeking to understand what went wrong and how to apply the lessons learned to the prevention of another death at the hands of a law enforcement officer.   Please leave us a review! What do you want more of?What is the difference between co-parenting and parallel parenting? If you have separated from your narcissistic ex-partner and you share children together, it is likely that you will still have to parent your children together in some capacity.  So, which one is right for you?Co-parenting, in theory, is what is in the best interest of your children. During co-parenting, you are making decisions together, discussing concerns, attending events together, and trying to keep the rules and structure in the home consistent. This only works if both parents can truly put the child's needs first and there is some trust in the other parent. It is more likely that you all are going to be parallel parenting. Parallel parenting is shared parenting where you limit contact and interact with the other parent as little as possible to avoid conflict while both parents maintain a relationship with the child. In this episode I speak about the challenges of parallel parenting with an abusive ex, why the courts still use the term co-parenting (and why you will use it too), and some of the things that you can do to help support your children during this and how to take care of yourself. The Journey Back to You: Rewriting Your Story is a Transformative Retreat for Survivors of Relationship Abuse. If you share more than one child with your narcissistic ex, then it is likely that you have seen your children treated differently.Oftentimes a narcissistic parent creates a dynamic where one child is “the golden child” and another is “the scapegoat.”  The golden child is treated much differently than the other children, getting more attention and special treatment, whereas a scapegoated child will take the brunt of the blame and shame for anything that is going wrong or that the narcissistic parent doesn't like. But why does this dynamic persist and why is it so common? And more importantly, what can you do as a protective parent to help your children as they manage the negative consequences of this dynamic? In this episode we take a look at why this dynamic works for a narcissistic parent, the negative consequences for each child, and what you can do about it as a protective parent. Please leave us a review! What would it be like to get a full night sleep?  Or to be able to focus on the task at hand? After experiencing the trauma of domestic violence and narcissistic abuse many survivors find that their daily functioning completely goes away.  And this makes complete sense, right? The constant trauma while in the relationship and the continued trauma in the aftermath cause a myriad of problems for your physical and mental health. On the last episode of The Rising Beyond Podcast I explained many of the most common trauma modalities that therapists today are using to support survivors.  In this episode we are diving deeper into a lesser known modality; neurofeedback.I have a conversation with Louise Finley, LPC on how neurofeedback can be used as a part of your healing journey from your abusive relationship.  We discuss what neurofeedback is and what it might look like during a session, and we also talk about some of the possible benefits and symptoms that can be targeted through this modality.  Louise is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia, USA and has worked in the therapy field since 2011.  Her early career years were split between private practice and hospital outpatient settings and consequently, Louise has gotten to work with individuals in many stages of life, mental health crises, trauma recovery, and growth.  In 2017 Louise was offered the opportunity to be trained in the Othmer Method of Neurofeedback--she initially saw this as a way to expand support for clients, but it has ended up re-shaping her, both personally and as a clinician.  The additional training has led Louise to actively integrate more brain and nervous system education in her talk therapy work and to appreciate how an appropriately timed brain-based intervention can be a catalyst for beautiful change.  Louise currently balances being a parent and seeing a small number of clients in private practice.  She occasionally blogs about Neurofeedback at www.louisefinley.com and would love to be a resource to any individuals or clinicians with Neurofeedback questions or looking to connect with a Georgia provider!Where to find Louise:www.louisefinley.comwww.eeginfo.com (website of the organization that trained Louise, some providers listed here) https://neurofeedback-network.squarespace.com/home (international/US NF provider listings, as well as basic NF information)Please leave us a review! If you have experienced relationship abuse, then you have experienced trauma. And even if you do not meet all of the requirements for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) it is likely that some form of trauma therapy will be a helpful part of your healing journey. And if your children have experienced or witnessed any of the abuse or the aftermath of the abuse, then they have experienced trauma as well and will likely need some support. In this episode I am going to give you an overhead and general view of some of the possible trauma modalities that you may find beneficial and share the most important aspects of all therapeutic relationships for survivors of domestic violence, narcissistic abuse, and coercive control. We discuss:Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)Internal Family Systems (IFS)Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)Narrative TherapyGroup TherapyAnd for children:Play TherapyOther experiential therapies (music, art, dance)EMDRTF-CBTThe most important aspect of whether the trauma modality will work for you is actually not the modality.  The most important aspect of your healing journey with your therapist is your relationship with the therapist.  Do you feel safe enough to ask questions? Does your therapist take on a collaborative role with you instead of an expert role talking to you? Do you feel a sense of unconditional positive regard? Domestic violence and narcissistic abuse strips away your sense of self and autonomy.  One of the most important parts of the healing process is to rediscover who you are and what you value so that you can learn to trust yourself again. As you become curious about who you were before the abuse and who you would like to be after you heal it can be helpful to have a guide to understand what drives you, what challenges you, and your best attributes. On this episode I have a conversation with my dear friend and colleague, Talya Dash, LCSW about how to use the Enneagram to connect with yourself as you heal from abuse.  The Enneagram system is a widely accepted personality model that offers deep insight into our core driving motivations, opening up exciting possibilities in the prediction and understanding of human behavior.  Talya describes each of the 9 types and how each one may find themselves susceptible to an abusive relationship and what may motivate each one as they heal.Received my BA in Psychology from Earlham College and Masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University.
