Editorial integrity and independence in the watch world. It's a hot topic, and one we've explored before. But that was before today's guest penned her open letter to the watch industry published in Robb Report titled: "Watch Execs Need to Learn to Respect Journalistic Boundaries." Victoria Gomelsky is editor-in-chief of JCK, a New York City-based jewelry trade publication founded in 1869. Her writing on watches, jewelry and travel has appeared in the New York Times, Robb Report, WSJ Magazine, and the Hollywood Reporter, among many others. We delve into the results of the Spring 2025 Collective Voice Survey, our twice-yearly report on how collectors feel about all things watches. Our Spring 2025 survey offers a fresh look at what's on the minds of watch enthusiasts—what excites them, what frustrates them, and how those feelings translate (or don't) into actual buying behavior. Just like our inaugural survey in Summer 2024, this round was packed with thoughtful, candid, and occasionally contradictory responses. Full survey results are available at collectivehorology.com/blog. Hosted by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly, co-founders of Collective Horology, Openwork goes inside the watch industry. These days, it seems like independent watchmakers and brands are everywhere – celebrated in watch media, on display at major retailers worldwide, hotly discussed in collector circles, and of course gaining share in an otherwise entrenched industry. But it's an overnight success decades in the making. And today we have the perfect guest to guide us through the rise of the independents: Tim Jackson. Tim is a passionate advocate for independent watchmaking, with a deep-rooted appreciation for mechanical timepieces that dates back to his childhood near Liverpool, England. His journey began with a Timex at age 10 and evolved into a lifelong fascination with horology that's spanned a career in the UK and now here in California. With over 30 years in the watch world, Tim has developed a particular admiration for independent artisans who push the boundaries of traditional watchmaking. Today, he continues to champion these masters of micro-mechanical art, helping enthusiasts discover and acquire truly exceptional timepieces through his business Independent in Time. We're joined by Praneeth Rajsingh, CEO of Horologer MING, to discuss the realities of watchmaking in Switzerland. While most watch brands are incredibly secretive about production, MING is remarkably transparent. So we invited Praneeth to discuss how exactly watch production in Switzerland works – warts and all. We discuss how the brand has evolved to be able to produce watches using movements and components from a wide range of partners to create their consistent, unique and thoroughly recognizable watches. Auction houses – they loom large in the world of watch collecting. Their lots, eye-popping results and personalities are followed feverishly by watch media and enthusiasts. But how much do we really know about these seemingly august, vaunted and shadowy institutions? How exactly do auction houses work? And what are the implications for the watch community? And today, we have the perfect guest to shine a light on the inner working of the auction houses: Marion Maneker, a longtime art world columnist and auction house insider. Marion Maneker, Special Correspondent for Art at Puck, the online news platform where insiders cover the worlds of Wall Street, Washington, Silicon Valley and Hollywood. Marion was formerly the president of ARTnews, a publisher at HarperCollins, and features editor at New York magazine. On February 7, 2025, Swiss media outlet Bilanz reported that Rolex is shutting down the Carl F. Bucherer watch brand, which it acquired in 2023 as part of its purchase of Bucherer – the global watch retailer. The decision to shutter any watch brand, particularly one dating back to 1888 with significant in-house watchmaking is major news. And it's a story with broader implications for the watch industry at large. So with that in mind, on this special episode of Openwork we're delving into the details and taking a look at what it all means. Hosted by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly, co-founders of Collective Horology, Openwork goes inside the watch industry. You can find us online at collectivehorology.com. Homages, replicas and clones, oh my! Today we're digging into the business and ethics of what's a perennial and now growing segment of the watch market. This is a complex topic, with important distinctions to be drawn between homages and replicas, clones or dupes. And more broadly, it's one that sheds important light on technology and production gains across the industry globally. Fortunately, we have the perfect guest to guide us through that landscape: Marc Frankel, who most of you probably know as Marc from Long Island Watch – both a retailer and manufacturer of a wide range of watches including homage watches. Marc is not only a living legend in this industry, but someone we genuinely admire and like. We are both proud and happy customers of Long Island Watch. And one of the great joys for us in participating in the Windup Watch Fairs over the years has been getting to know Marc. On this episode of the Openwork podcast, we look at luxury pricing. Of course, we've already done a deep dive on how watches are priced. (Check out our episode with Mike Margolis of Czapek and Singer Reimagined for that.) However, in the past, we've largely focused on how inputs like cost of labor, materials, inflation and currency exchange impact pricing. But there's of course more that goes into pricing for watches and luxury goods more broadly. There are considerations like brand value, product positioning as well as consumer psychology that also impact pricing. And that's what we explore today – those other more nebulous, but equally significant, inputs into pricing. To help us with that we have the perfect guest: Katharine K. Zarrella is a writer, editor, and the Fashion Critic-at-Large at Document Journal. With a background as Fashion Director at the Wall Street Journal's Off Duty section and as a lecturer at Parsons School of Design and Central Saint Martins, she has contributed to numerous renowned publications, including Harper's Bazaar, The Business of Fashion, and most recently The New York Times, where she recently published the guest essay: Obscene Prices, Declining Quality: Luxury Is in a Death Spiral. It's that time of year: Predictions. On this episode we look at the year ahead, and make three calls each about the future of the watch industry. On this episode we look back on the business of watches in 2024. In particular, we discuss where the watch market is as we close out the year. Is it growing, stalling, or as some would claim in retreat? To help us break it all down, we're joined by returning guest Hamza Masood of WatchCharts – the world's most comprehensive, transparent and trusted source of watch market data. It's a service we at Collective subscribe to for its valuable insight not just into the pre-owned watch market but what that data can tell us about the watch industry at large. This week we welcome Collective Horology co-founder Gabe Reilly to the podcast to discuss the brand's 10th collaborative watch releasing today, the Zenith Defy Skyline C.X. The new watch is the second collaboration between Collective Horology and Zenith, and the first since 2019 and their initial product offering, the C.01. Gabe offers a wealth of insight not only to the process, but to the industry as a whole, and to how Collective Horology fits into that bigger picture by way of a focus on independent watchmaking. On this episode of Openwork, we explore the business of both MB&F and Max's most recent horological project: M.A.D.Editions. While both represent wildly creative watches, they have fundamentally different business models, with MB&F producing under 200 pieces a year at prices mostly over $100K USD and M.A.D.Editions producing thousands of watches a year at under $5K USD. For years, we've followed the GPHG – the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève – with great excitement and interest as it's essentially the Oscars of Watches. And with this year's award ceremony taking place November 13, we figured it would be helpful to lift the veil on what goes on behind the scenes. Who are the people who nominate these watches, and what does voting look like? Does the GPHG meaningfully drive sales for brands, and what's involved in participating? We get into all of that and more, as we share our own experience as voting GPHG academy members. If you haven't already, be sure to refresh the Worn & Wound podcast feed this morning, because we have a special bonus pod to start your week. At the recent Windup Watch Fair in New York City, we recorded a very special podcast in front of a live audience with our friends at Collective Horology and some very special guests. Co-moderated by Collective's Asher Rapkin and Zach Kazan, we welcome Brew founder Jonathan Ferrer and Urwerk co-founder Martin Frei to the stage for a lively conversation about how each of these unique horological voices started their brands. We see lots of parallels between Urwerk and Brew. While they exist at opposite ends of the price point spectrum, both are design forward brands with a deep independent streak, and in this discussion we dig into how Jonathan and Martin approached building their brands, separated by decades and in very different watch market climates. Both Jonathan and Martin share revealing stories about the challenges of starting independent watch brands, and including how they leveraged the internet and social media in very different ways, and leaned on their own collector communities to build momentum.
On this episode, we share an industry perspective on what's quickly becoming something of a New York Watch Week – comprising the Windup Watch Fair, WatchTime and more. Additionally, we're going to share a special live podcast recording from the Windup Watch Fair – a joint episode between us and the Worn & Wound Podcast. It's a conversation with Martin Frei of URWERK and Jonathan Ferrer of Brew about how they built their brands. On this episode, we take a look at a topic that we've been curious about for a long time. We have discussed, both with members of the industry and amongst ourselves, the realities of production here in the United States, Japan, Switzerland and to a lesser degree Germany. But to date, we haven't discussed one of the largest centers of watch manufacturing in the world: China. From full watches to components of every imaginable variety, China is a formidable force in the world of watchmaking and watch collecting. To help us learn more about the Chinese production ecosystem and why it matters, we're proud to be joined by our friend Wes Kwok, co-founder of Nodus Watches. Today (October 4, 2024) marks a major shift in the watch industry. Hodinkee, the leading voice in modern watch media, has been fully acquired by Watches of Switzerland, a massive UK based retailer with operations around the world including in the US. Only a few months ago, Ben Clymer, founder of Hodinkee – and as of today, a President at Watches of Switzerland – announced that the publication was shuttering their retail business and going to back to focus on “the basics” (i.e., their editorial product). So what does this all mean for Hodinkee, its stakeholders, and of course the industry at large? We discuss the current landscape of movement suppliers and how it came to be. We cover how movements are selected by watchmakers, along with the drama that often surrounds the ever-popular “in house” vs “mass produced” discussion. We offer some thoughts on how, why or if movement design, finishing and construction should figure into a purchasing decision. On this special episode of Openwork, we discuss Hodinkee's recent announcement that they're shutting down their retail business – with the exception of limited editions – to refocus on editorial. This is big news that touched off an immediate and widespread response within the watch community. This episode is a very frank and unfiltered conversation with Aren Bazerkanian, founder of Havid Nagan – the upstart independent brand that took the watch world by storm in 2022 with its debut watch the HN00. We recorded this conversation in January of this year at a time when Aren was navigating challenges with Swiss watch production. In particular, one of his key suppliers experienced a leadership change and increased costs, rendering the economics of his second project the HN01 Lucine unsustainable. As a result, Aren did what many start up businesses have done time and time again – pivot. In particular, he refunded all customers who placed pre-order deposits, while he identified new suppliers and productions partners, and not to mention developed an all new watch. Aren documents this in greater detail and transparency at his site havidnagan.com. As Aren navigated this uncertainty, Asher and I debated whether to air this episode at all. However, now that Aren has set Havid Ngan on fresh footing, we all agree – including Aren – this conversation sheds greater lights on and insight into the realities his business had to navigate and the principles he used to do so. Probably the question we're asked most is how we design and develop our collaborative watches – how we identify brands, how the creative process works, and how we make decisions along the way on everything from design to finishing. We share our biggest lessons from going inside the watch industry. We both made the transition from watch enthusiasts to industry insiders. We've had the opportunity to retail watches, design them, meet many industry luminaries, and even serve as GPHG academy members – and we've learned a ton along the way. We often get asked what that journey has been like, and what advice we'd give others who are looking to do the same or are just curious. We're lifting the veil on selling and trading your watches. We cover the options available when you're ready to move on from a watch, the trade-offs of those options, as well as why there are different cost structures depending on how you sell or trade your watch. In particular, we share how we as dealers look at buying and trading for watches, which will hopefully demystify things and more importantly help the next time you approach a dealer about selling or trading your watch. Hosted by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly, co-founders of Collective Horology, Openwork goes inside the watch industry. Yes, another watch podcast. But the idea here is to do something different and distinct. Before we ever worked a day in the watch industry, we were both enthusiasts and collectors. So as we've moved through the industry over the last five years, it's been eye opening. We've gained a new perspective on watches from going inside the industry. And that's really the goal of this podcast: To give you an unfiltered view into the inner workings of the watch industry. Thanks for listening to Openwork, a podcast from Collective Horology. In this episode of The Deep Track podcast, we welcome Asher Rapkin of Collective Horology to discuss some of the 2023 trends and themes that we think will have an impact on 2024. Collective Horology is a retailer of 9 watch brands, and is known for the inventive collaborations from watch brands such as Zenith, Oris, Urwerk, and others. Asher is an enthusiast and collector with a wide ranging collection, which has taken a turn toward smaller independents and micro-brands of late. We also discuss the somewhat surprising year that Rolex had, and what that mean moving ahead.
In this episode of A Week In Watches we take a closer look at the some exciting news from Oris, Ming, G-Shock, and more. You may have heard that this year marks the 40th anniversary of G-Shock, something they've been celebrating throughout 2023. This week, we got a pair of new watches from the brand as part of the celebration, and they are some of the coolest square cased G-Shocks we've ever seen. These watches get ultra-light carbon cases and include a pretty wild colorway that is one of our favorite uses of the color purple in recent memory. Cheers to you, G-Shock, and may we say many happy returns.Elswhere, Ming dabbles in rose gold with a new 37.04 Monopusher Chronograph, that even gets a solid gold dial with a deep guilloché pattern, and it really works. Any episode of OT: featuring one of the Collective Horology gang is a guaranteed good time, and today's chat with Asher Rapkin is no exception. Ostensibly, Asher is on to talk about his latest release, an impressive, alternate history take on a Minerva monopusher. But even before we talk about what makes the watch stand out, we take a long and meandering trip through the industry's state, collectors' habits, and (naturally) Lou Bega. This week on the podcast, Blake and Zach are chatting with Asher Rapkin, co-founder of Collective Horology, about their latest release, the 1858 Minerva Monopusher Chronograph “Blue Arrow” P.05. This is a seriously high end, and beautiful, chronograph that takes inspiration from vintage Minerva stopwatches from the 1940s and 50s. Asher takes us through how the watch was conceived, with a variety of different design cues coming together to form a watch that represents a fascinating bit of “historical nonfiction,” as Asher puts it. It's a watch that Minerva never made, but could have if they decided to move in a slightly different direction. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. Within the world of this podcast, most of you will know Gabe Reilly as co-founder of Collective Horology, the community of watch collectors and purveyors of some of the finest collaborative designs with some of the best watch brands of today. Gabe and I officially met last summer in Chicago at WindUp, and since Asher flew home to California before he and I did, I invited Gabe to dinner with some friends. We had a blast and a friendship was born. Gabe and I often exchange texts about baseball and hat hatchbacks, so I was excited to host him on the show. I've always gotten along well with native New Yorkers, and conversations with Gabe always feel too short, so alas, here's our recent exchange. I hope you enjoy it. This week on the podcast, we're going back to the 90s for a discussion about the unique nostalgia that period right before the turn of the millennium. We had a great conversation with Gabe Reilly from Collective Horology in front of a crowd at the Windup Watch Fair in Chicago, and are sharing that here this week. The 1990s saw a lot of great (or at least interesting) watches that perhaps don't get the respect they deserve, and we try to figure out why in this panel discussion. This episode is brought to you by Artem. Artem is a modern watch maker out of Australia. During their search for great aftermarket watch straps, it became apparent to them that oftentimes, the sailcloth straps offered by many retailers felt like a bit of an afterthought. The quality just wasn't up to par with straps of other materials. This opportunity provided motivation for them to embark on a journey to create a high quality sailcloth-style watch strap that they'd want to wear everyday, no matter the activity. After much testing and iteration, Artem developed a meticulous material selection process which landed on a unique blend of materials that offered just the right finish, flexibility, and water resistance. The upper side of their straps are an embossed synthetic, while the underside is a combo of coated leather and natural rubber. The result speaks for itself… straps with that classic look and functionality of sailcloth, but with the outer satin sheen they've become known for and quality usually only found in very high-end OEM straps. On this episode of Time on Screen, Zach is joined by Asher Rapkin, co-founder of Collective Horology. We return to the small screen this week to focus on what might just be as close as we'll ever come to a consensus pick for the greatest television show of them all, The Sopranos. Zach and Asher reminisce about catching the series as it aired (they're both kind of old) and acquiring those iconic DVD box sets, another collecting rabbit hole altogether. Then they dive into “Mr. Ruggerio's Neighborhood,” the season 3 premiere that originally aired in the spring of 2001, setting the table for what some fans argue is the best single season of the show. This episode, which tracks an FBI team as they attempt to plant a listening device in the Soprano home (the “sausage factory”), is uniquely obsessed with time, and has what is easily one of the show's great watch spots on Agent Harris. His Timex (with an Indiglo dial) is sneakily great character work, drawing a clear line between Tony and life of ill gotten gains, and the more humble means of the government employee just doing his job in trying to take him down.To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. Asher Rapkin and I met through a mutual friend in the watch space. Our good friend Brandon actually sold me my first IWC, and he's sold Asher an independent or two from none other than Passion Fine Jewelry. Long story short, Asher and I were connected via text and the conversations started flowing. As an IWC fan, I was immediately obsessed with the C.03 from Collective Horology - Asher's limited edition collaborative Watch business he co-founded and runs with his childhood best friend, Gabe Reilly. Sadly, I missed out on the C.03 on its release, however I was able to pick one up second hand and I absolutely love it. What I love most about Collective is the fact their designs alongside the wonderful companies and watchmakers with whom they work never feel like Design by Committee even though the results derive from several opinions involved. Asher is from NYC so we spend a fair amount of time discussing his upbringing, his career in marketing at the likes of Mtv & Facebook and a band called Phish. I'm always interested in what Asher has to say, because everything he says is so well-considered and often thought-provoking which makes me feel very fortunate to call him a friend. In this episode, George is joined by Asher Rapkin, Co-Founder of Collective Horology as they discuss the IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Edition C.03.
This week on the Worn & Wound podcast, we're talking to Gabe Reilly, a cofounder of Collective Horology. Collective is an application-only Silicon Valley based watch collector's group that just released their latest collaborative watch, a limited edition version of IWC's Pilot's Watch Chronograph. With this release, they're also opening up their first European collecting hub. Gabe joins Blake Buettner and Zach Kazan to discuss the finer points of collaborating with watch brands on limited releases, the inspiration behind Collective's latest creation, and how the private collector's group got its start. Be sure to let us know in the comments if you have any question for Gabe about Collective, their recent collaborations, or how you can get involved in the group. Today on the pod, we chat with Collective Horology co-founder Gabe Reilly. And we're speaking to Gabe for a very good reason because Collective has just teamed up with IWC to release the Pilot's Watch Chronograph C.03, Which Reilly describes as a love letter to IWC. To be fair, he also describes it as that watch you would get if you time-travelled back to IWC in the mid-90s, kidnapped the design team and brought them back to 2021. Thankfully for all involved, no time-shenanigans were involved in this watch. IWC still has a decidedly no-nonsense aesthetic, and Mr Klaus and Mr Habring haven't been pruned from the timeline. We also find out how Cartier and James Bond got Reilly into watches, and explore how community has changed over time – as well as what stayed the same. Finally, Felix and Andy have some profound realisations about the nature of their working relationship. As you do. Another episode of the Independent Thinking Show for FifthWrist Radio. This is a place dedicate to showcasing the great people doing interesting and cool things in the world of horology. Hosts Roman (@TimesRomanAU) and Alex “aka The Podfather” (@thewatchregulator) chat with Nick and Josh Hacko (@nicholashackowatch) - a fiercely independent watchmaking father and son team behind the Australian Indie Watchmaking Company “Nicholas Hacko Watches”. Join us for a truely passionate and honest conversation about independent watchmaking; the challenges of carving your own path in the horological industry; and the exciting journey Hacko Watches are undertaking manufacturing and machining watches in Australia. We also talk about the importance of integrity and suffering for your craft; passion and drive which underpins everything Nick and Josh are doing to create a truly unique ecosystem to support and further independent watchmaking. We also talk about their new watch NH3, manufactured in Sydney Australia about to be released; and why George Daniels can be blamed for unrealistic expectations customers have of independent watchmakers. Today's guest is none other than Asher Rapkin. By day Asher is a marketer for Facebook, but by night he's the co-founder of Collective Horology, a community of watch lovers held together by collaborative watches. The latest collab just launched, and it's the very cool, out-of-this-world Urwerk UR100-V P.02 for Collective. We chat to Asher about what inspired this watch, as well as get into the nuts, bolts and balance sheets as to how a limited edition is made, from working out quantities to design tweaks. We also find out why Collective exists in an age when Instagram and other platforms have made finding watch enthusiasts easier than ever. Another unique aspect about Collective is that it's quite small, private, and you can only join through an 'application process' — something that Rapkin admits still makes him roll his eyes. So if you're curious about Collective, love Urwerk or just want to hear Felix go on about his favourite conspiracy theory, you've come to the right place. This episode is sponsored by TAG Heuer. This week it is just Spence and Buzz, and we do have a lot to talk about. Despite trying to bore our listeners by talking about refinancing a mortgage and voting in the election today, there is quite a bit of watch content as there have been several new releases that we have yet to discuss. We start off with the customary drink/wrist check, and it starts here. Buzz has the Par Weber Coefficient, a piece we have in for review to accompany his Happy Amber. Spence is double wristing again this time with his new Brew Retromatic in burgundy (Brewgundy) and the Albany AMA diver along with his Larceny bourbon. The guys are excited about the pieces, and listeners should look out for some good content over at Zeitzwatches.com and future episodes.Fresh forum finds return and we pay our respect to Sean Connery who we lost last week. Diving into his time as James Bond and the non-Rolex Submariners he wore on screen. Spence and Buzz then dive into all the watches we haven't been able to talk about, starting with the Oris Aquis caliber 400. Suffice it to say, we are pretty impressed with what Oris is doing, and this watch is a highlight of their technical chops. We cannot wait to see how the new movement works its way through their lineup, and this is the perfect place to start. We then discuss the new Formex Reef, which seems to be a mash up of several watches we all know and love, but manages to pull the look off. All of this for a pre-order price under $1,800 with COSC certification makes for a compelling package. Our friends at Collective Horology have been busy with the folks at H. Moser & Cie. The new Pioneer Center Seconds for Collective is a stunner of a travel watch. The handset with globolight inserts really make this a standout piece along with the green dial and 12 hour bi-directional bezel. The folks who have the opportunity to pick this 75 piece LE will not be disappointed.Rounding it out, we talk about some other new recent releases including th Doxa Sub 200 Chronograph and the new Breitling Chronomats. Hope everyone enjoys this episode!
Spence and Buzz had the chance to sit down with Gabe, one of the founding members of Collective Horology.Gabe and Buzz were introduced by friend of the show Dustin, over a Monta Skyquest that may have been for sale. It was also obvious that Gabe was someone we would definitely want to have on. The two current collaborations done by Collective are stunning. We were able to ask Gabe about the design process, how they approached the Zenith, and how working with Josh Shapiro on the Portfolio piece was different than working with a major brand. We also got to go deep down the rabbit hole into how Gabe and Asher met Josh and what sparked their idea to do a collaboration with Josh. The story is a good one. Lastly, we get into what watch in his collection is getting the most wrist-time recently. Like any good watch nerd, Gabe has a great story about what inspired him to pick up his Rolex 16710.We appreciate Gabe taking the time to chat with us, and we hope you enjoy this as much as we did.
