The hosts take open a sweeping look at the week's most consequential retail developments before heading live to the Narvar Podcast Studio at the NRF Big Show for a deep dive into AI, agentic commerce, and the evolving post-purchase customer journey. The news segment explores Saks Global's decision to close nine full-line stores, underscoring ongoing consolidation in the luxury industry and challenges in multi-line retail. The hosts examine luxury's continued bifurcation, with Kering struggling while Hermès thrives, reinforcing that luxe positioning alone isn't enough — execution matters. In specialty retail, the “collapse of the unremarkable middle” continues as Toys “R” Us Canada, Francesca's, and Eddie Bauer face significant retrenchment if not extinction, while Tractor Supply and Aritzia aggressively expand. Kroger appoints its first external CEO, Greg Boren, signaling operational rigor ahead, while Costco once again posts remarkable sales growth  Meanwhile, Target begins meaningful leadership restructuring — a foundational step in what is likely a multi-year turnaround. On the radar: AI-powered retail crime prevention at Bunnings and the imminent opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a major infrastructure development for North American trade. The featured interview brings Henry Spear, SVP Digital North America, JD Sports, and David Morin, VP Customer Strategy for Narvar, to the mic for a timely discussion on agentic commerce and how leveraging product returns can create competitive differentiation. In this episode, we dive into the growing wave of consolidation—and potential deconsolidation—sweeping through the watch industry, from confirmed brand sales to mounting rumors around major maisons. Rather than speculate, we focus on what actually happens after a brand leaves a luxury group, and why leadership, distribution, and product strategy matter far more than deal headlines. First, we unpack a cautionary case study: Ebel's spin-off from LVMH to Movado. Despite meaningful product upgrades and stronger positioning under LVMH, Ebel ultimately lost momentum when placed into a retail and marketing ecosystem that couldn't sustain its upmarket ambitions—showing how misaligned infrastructure can quietly dilute even historic brands. We then contrast that with Girard-Perregaux and Ulysse Nardin's management buyout from Kering, where focused leadership and renewed investment in watchmaking are already driving creative and commercial resurgence. Together, these case studies reveal a simple truth: spin-offs don't succeed or fail because of ownership alone—they succeed or fail based on vision, execution, and whether the new stewards truly understand how to build great watch brands. Hosted by Asher Rapkin and Gabe Reilly, co-founders of Collective Horology, Openwork goes inside the watch industry. You can find us online at collectivehorology.com.

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2026 5:00

On the Glossy Podcast, senior fashion reporter Danny Parisi and international reporter Zofia Zwieglinska break down some of the biggest fashion news of the week. This week, we're talking about the bankruptcy filing of Saks Global, something that many had predicted would happen over the last few weeks as the company's debt load continued to grow. Saks reportedly owes hundreds of millions of dollars to its various vendors, including bigger brands like Chanel and Kering. The bankruptcy also drew the ire of Amazon, which had invested hundreds of millions into Saks' acquisition of Neiman Marcus two years ago, the value of which Amazon now says is worthless. We discussed the ripple effects that Saks's bankruptcy will have on the company, on the brands that work with it and on luxury shopping, in general.

As the global biodiversity crisis intensifies, the race is on to design financial systems that protect nature rather than destroy it. In this episode of the Think Wildlife Podcast, Dr. Samuel Sinclair, co-founder of Biodiversify, unpacks the evolution of biodiversity credits, the limitations of the current biodiversity credit market, and the urgent need for credible biodiversity conservation finance. Based in the UK, Biodiversify works with global corporations, governments, and NGOs to make businesses truly nature positive—moving beyond carbon neutrality to measurable biodiversity net gain.Dr. Sinclair traces his path from fieldwork in Tanzania and anti-poaching initiatives with the African Wildlife Foundation to pioneering frameworks that help major brands like Kering, Primark, Tetra Pak, and Amazon integrate biodiversity management into corporate strategy. He explains why biodiversity credits have not scaled like carbon credits, emphasizing the lack of standardized metrics, corporate incentives, and clear biodiversity credit standards. For credits to be effective, he argues, they must directly address business risks—such as threats to commodity supply chains—and become tied to real ecological outcomes. The discussion delves into the emerging biodiversity finance landscape: from the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) to Science-Based Targets for Nature (SBTN). These frameworks are transforming how companies assess, report, and invest in biodiversity. Sinclair explains how Biodiversify helps clients navigate these systems, ensuring their corporate biodiversity credits and biodiversity net gain commitments align with global best practices. We explore the critical difference between nature credits and carbon credits, why biodiversity cannot be reduced to a single global metric, and how new biodiversity credit regulations could create markets that reward genuine ecological restoration. Sinclair also reflects on his field experiences across Africa, where conservation taught him that protecting ecosystems is as much about people as wildlife. This episode is a must-listen for conservation professionals, sustainability officers, and anyone curious about investing in biodiversity as the next frontier in environmental finance. Learn how corporate action, regulatory innovation, and on-the-ground conservation can merge to halt biodiversity loss and deliver a nature-positive future.About the HostAnish Banerjee is an early career ecologist, with a MSc in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation from Imperial College London. They also explore luxury corporate earnings, where Hermès continues to shine, while.  Gucci owner Kering struggles to regain footing. Meanwhile, Mattel falls short as retailers tighten orders ahead of the holidays. The discussion then turns to job cuts at Target, Amazon, GM, and Nestlé, revealing how automation, AI, and tariff pressures are reshaping corporate structures, before turning to  Amazon's plan to replace up to 600,000 roles with robotics. They also cover ChatGPT's meteoric rise to No. 2 in product search, challenging Google and signaling a shift in how consumers discover products.Throughout, they underscore the precariousness of retail confidence heading into the holiday season — from Tractor Supply's cautious guidance to Deckers' HOKA sales slowdown.Blank Canvas Strategy: Finding Retail's 'New Earth'In the second half, Steve introduces "Blank Canvas Strategy"— a methodology for retailers to reimagine their businesses from the ground up, free from legacy constraints. Unlike Blue Ocean Strategy, which focuses on discovering compltey untapped markets, this framework helps brands reinvent their core business models before disruption makes them irrelevant.Steve urges leaders to recognize when their "planet" (current business model and market domain) becomes uninhabitable, and to begin building "Earth Two" — an alternative growth destination. Together, the hosts examine why incremental change doomed once-iconic retailers like Blockbuster, Sears, and Pier 1, and how others like Dick's Sporting Goods and RH (Restoration Hardware) succeeded by boldly innovating their business designs. They close by discussing how executives can carve out time, treasure, and talent for R&D, overcome the fear of cannibalization, and lead with the courage to disrupt themselves before competitors do.After the focused content discussion it's on to the most remarkable stories of the week, including Walmart's massive commitment to deploying 90 million supply-chain sensors to track pallets and fresh-food products. The episode wraps with what needs to be on everyone's radar screens. One recommendation: keep your eyes on "GU" the first U.S. store fromUniqlo's parent company, Fast Retailing.
