In this episode of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted and co-host, Russell Sturm, speak with Jesse Moore, CEO and Co-Founder at M-KOPA, the world leader of affordable "pay-as-you-go" financial services for low-income customers based in Africa. Since commercial launch in 2012, M-KOPA has connected, provided, and served over 3 million customers to affordable off-grid distributed solar systems and connectivity solutions, including lighting, charging, radio, TVs, fridges, and smartphones. Russell starts with his introduction, exploring and explaining the impressive evolution of the off-grid solar industry over the past fifteen years, which has emerged for the first time to provide power to 2 billion people who do not have access to reliable and modern energy. He then introduces Jesse to the conversation, and describes M-KOPA as a sustainable and profitable company which continues to innovate for the financially excluded.Ted and Jesse then dive into his works, first discussing his background, originally from Toronto, Canada. He holds an MBA from Oxford University (Skoll Scholar) and a BA from the University of North Carolina (Morehead Scholar). Early in his career, with a desire to drive social impact, Jesse worked with the international development charity CARE. His work then transitioned from a strictly humanitarian focus to enterprise solutions, spurred specifically by an interest in advancing cellular connectivity in Africa via M-PESA, a virtual payment service launched by Vodafone and Safaricom in 2007. M-PESA offered a playbook for what would become M-KOPA, which was founded in 2010 with an idea of combining the power of digital micropayments with GSM connectivity to make life-enhancing assets more accessible. Jesse has since overseen the company's growth from startup to over 2,000 employees and 20,000 sales agents. M-KOPA currently has offices in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, UK and Hong Kong. The company has received numerous awards for its innovation, impact and scale: including winning the prestigious Zayed Future Energy Prize, making the coveted MIT Technology Review 50 Smartest Companies list, and being listed by Fortune Magazine as one of the Top 50 Companies Changing the World. Investors in M-KOPA include Generation Investment Management, CDC Group and Standard Bank, as well as esteemed entrepreneurs such as Virgin Founder Sir Richard Branson and AOL founder Steve Case.As a leader in empowering homes and small businesses through connected technology, Jesse is representative of an industry of entrepreneurs that sees the only way to address these fundamental problems within commercial markets at scale is with companies that are responsive to customer needs instead of donor biases, and are able to innovate, drive prices down, and continuously provide products that people need.

How do you double a company's growth while the world is in the throes of an economy-breaking pandemic? Well, you could answer this with yet another question: Have you ever had a HydraFacial?BeautyHealth President and CEO Andrew Stanleick has. And while it would be presumptive to say that receiving a HydraFacial for the first time was enough to convince him to take the helm of a multi-national company, well for starters, the product IS that good. But when discussing a company that is rapidly becoming the leading name in skin and scalp treatments, it was easy for Andrew to see the potential for exponential growth. He set to work remaking BeautyHealth in the space of a year by bringing in top talent, the very movers and shakers of the beauty business themselves — including previous Technology of Beauty guests Jwala Karnik and Brad Hauser. And the growth was further fueled by partnering with a wide array of channel partners in order to meet the consumer where he or she wants to experience next-gen beauty treatments. Now, with the rollout of BeautyHealth's new HydraFacial Syndeo Device, providers can personalize treatments to a client's skin needs and preferences, drawing on cloud-based software with the capability to store real-time knowledge of client preferences, treatment history, and skin concerns across locations and providers.Combine all that with an appetite for acquisitions — such as the SkinStylus microneedling device — and BeautyHealth is primed for an expansive future.Find out all the details of how BeautyHealth is bridging the gap between traditional beauty and medical aesthetics on the latest episode of The Technology of Beauty.Show Notes:0:00 Intro0:23 Background5:28 How a HydraFacial brought Andrew to BeautyHealth7:00 Bringing in top talent9:04 Becoming a leading source of skin and scalp data10:07 Launching the Hydrafacial Syndeo device13:59 Discussing the Hydrafacial Keravive scalp treatment15:38 Acquisition of the SkinStylus microneedling device18:51 What's on the horizon?21:10 Growth outside the United States22:54 Partnering with luxury brands — hotels, spas, gyms, cruise ships24:57 Crystal ball» Apple Podcasts | https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/technology-of-beauty/id1510898426» Spotify | https://open.spotify.com/show/0hEIiwccpZUUHuMhlyCOAm» Recent episodes | https://www.influxmarketing.com/technology-of-beauty/» Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/thetechnologyofbeauty/» LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-technology-of-beauty/The Technology of Beauty is produced by Influx Marketing, The Digital Agency for Aesthetic Practices. https://www.influxmarketing.com/Want more aesthetic insights? Arguably, two of the most iconic examples of digital transformation are Kodak and Amazon. Kodak failed to keep with the times, leading to the demise of a once dominant commercial empire. Amazon, however, had the foresight to not just “stay in its lane,” but step out and shape the world's digital infrastructure with AWS. Now, Lexmark, is taking note of Kodak's failure and Amazon's success and piloting into its own. Moving beyond printers, supplies and accessories — which is how Lexmark first made a name for itself — the company's current motto seems to be “Print, secure and manage your information.” In 2022, Lexmark lists Print and Capture as just two of its solutions, which also include Cloud, Security and IoT. The Lexmark Optra IoT Platform, unveiled September, is featured prominently on the company's site. Today, the company is unveiling Optra Edge, the latest addition to its Optra IoT solutions portfolio. Vishal Gupta, Lexmark's senior VP of connected technology, CTO and CIO, says the company's new tools and move into IoT are just the beginning. Article published on VentureBeat

Seeing Through The Numbers

Episode # 4 of the Seeing Through the Numbers Podcast is all about bookkeeping and how cloud systems like Xero have simplified this process.I started using Xero back in 2012 when it was still an unknown in Australia. At the time, I was regularly getting enquiries from new start-up businesses and I set them all up on Xero, gave them an hour or two of training on how to use it and they were up and running. It's that simple to use. After six months of doing that, I converted my own office accounts from MYOB to Xero and immediately saved myself 4 hours a month in data processing time. From that time onwards, I've been shouting from the rooftops and telling everyone I see how awesome Xero is. I even wrote a book about it - Connected Technology - How to Transform Your Business with Cloud Accounting. Fast forward to now and whilst all the benefits that were espoused in 2012 are still valid, like the time savings, the automation of data entry, the ability for your advisors to see your numbers, real-time up-to-date numbers, the greatest benefit is in having those numbers readily available to help you to make decisions and to see what's happening in the business. I'll be talking to Nick Urry from Dexterous Accounting next week about how bookkeeping can be simplified.
