In this conversation, Ramesh shares his thoughts on how generative AI is transforming Bain, the evolution of the CIO role in the AI era, and how Bain's clients harness the latest AI capabilities.Quick hits from Ramesh:On AI's exciting potential to enhance security: “I remain to be extremely bullish on where AI can take us. I believe AI as a human oversight can really increase the velocity of our defense. We have to do that. Human beings cannot respond fast enough.”On choosing which use cases to apply generative AI first: “A famous two by two exercise is to say, ‘What data is available and what value is at stake there?', and then plot what's the most valuable data for what you are trying to do. What you don't want is the most complex use case up front because the engine is not warmed up. We need to prove the value.”On understanding risk and compliance before adopting AI: “ This technology doesn't come with its own sets of risks. It doesn't come with its own set up. You need to establish proper risk and compliance forums. You need to make sure you are in lockstep with legal teams and risk teams. We want to make sure we're training the right way. We want to change the right behavior.”Recent Book Recommendation: Optimal by Daniel Goleman--Like what you hear? Digital transformation seems to be a given in most organizations. It's not a question of whether they will do it, but what sort of return they can expect from it. But finding those returns may depend more on the underpinnings of the transformation, not the top-level technologies or grand ambitions that are expressed. John Marcante and Tim Smith have been in the trenches of digital transformations. Marcante spent almost 30 years in both technology and business leadership positions at Vanguard, culminating in his role as Global CIO. He led the company's digital transformation in 2012, changing not just the technologies used but also the way Vanguard's teams operated. He is currently CIO-in-residence for Deloitte Consulting LLP. Tim Smith is the head of Deloitte Consulting LLP's Tech Strategy and Business Transformation practice in the United States and leads the global team in digital transformation research. He authored the article Unleashing value from digital transformation: Paths and pitfalls, and is currently working on a new piece that identifies how organizations measure their digital transformation effects. We spoke with Smith and Marcante about the importance of purpose in digital transformation, the factors that may lead to higher returns, and whether digital transformation is ever truly done.
Get ready for an illuminating journey into the complexities and nuances of innovation with my guest, Amy Radin, Executive Advisor and founder of Pragmatic Innovation Partners. With a career that spans multiple decades and industries, Amy brings an unparalleled depth of insight into what it truly takes to innovate, especially in the financial services sector. From being Citi's first global Chief Innovation Officer to her executive roles at American Express and Axa, her expertise is as expansive as it is profound. Amy specializes in helping business leaders navigate the complex terrain of innovation by identifying new growth opportunities while mitigating associated risks. Her unique approach focuses on unraveling the cultural layers within organizations, providing invaluable perspectives on how internal culture can both aid and impede innovation processes. One of the most compelling elements of this discussion revolves around the concept of "execution." As Amy stresses, an idea, no matter how groundbreaking, lacks value without the capability to bring it into reality. This principle holds true whether you're at a startup or part of an established Fortune 500 company. Her viewpoints bring a fresh, grounded perspective to the often nebulous and romanticized world of innovation. Does your organization need a Chief Innovation Officer (CIO)? This question forms another central theme of our conversation. While appointing a CIO can signify a company's commitment to innovation, it also runs the risk of excluding other departments from this critical function. Amy expertly navigates this organizational dilemma, emphasizing the importance of an inclusive innovation culture. Further enhancing this rich tapestry of insights, Amy delves into the critical but often overlooked relationship between innovation and business strategy. Even the most creative endeavors are doomed to become aimless projects without strategic alignment. If you're grappling with the complexities of innovation in today's fast-paced business world, this episode will equip you with actionable strategies and insights.
