Julie and Casey sit down with speaker, author, and creativity expert Natalie Nixon, founder of Figure 8 Thinking, to discuss how everyone can find more creativity, how the workplace should be redefining productivity, and lessons from a life lived all over the world. Along the way, we learn about intuition, the gifts of being “in the margins”, and why leaders should consider learning the tango. Thank you to our Season 3 sponsor, Armoire! TOP TAKEAWAYS: Noticing what she heard over and over again from the leaders and business folks she was talking to (“it's like jazz” and “something told me to…” being two examples) and following her own curiosity led Natalie down her primary research paths: chaordic systems, intuitive leadership, and creativity. Natalie explains creativity as “wonder + rigor”. Wonder is the necessary time/energy for reflection, play, experimentation, rest, etc., and rigor is the necessary time/energy for grit, practice, discipline, and gaining expertise. What if we had new metrics for productivity? Natalie coined the term “invisible work” to put a label on the ideation, ruminating, reframing of problems, reflection, etc that goes into the VISIBLE results in the business world. This stuff is absolutely necessary but difficult to quantify — the old metrics of “widgets created/time on task” don't work in our new era of work. Mini Lesson: The challenges—and gifts—of being a “clumsy student” Natalie Nixon, PhD is a creativity strategist, global keynote speaker and author. As president of Figure 8 Thinking, LLC she advises leaders on transformation—by applying wonder and rigor to amplify growth and business value. Natalie is one of Real Leaders' "Top 50 Keynote Speakers in the World for 2022" She is the author of the award-winning The Creativity Leap: Unleash Curiosity, Improvisation and Intuition at Work—an honoree in the creativity category of Fast Company's 2021 World Changing Ideas Awards. Her firm Figure 8 Thinking, was named among the top 20 women-led innovation firms by Core 77 in 2021. A creativity strategy means understanding the role of beauty, desire, and aesthetics in building consumer insight. It's the ability to converge unique and divergent experiences by helping people understand that strategy is creative. It is about building better cultures of collaboration and a toggle between wonder and rigor to solve problems and produce noble value. One of the creativity structures we found effective in a company is orthogonal thinking. Orthogonal thinking proved efficient when it comes to cognitive diversity - making sure that you have teams where not everyone has the same training, resume, or background. Companies that are trying to encourage orthogonal thinking move towards integrated creativity, consistently in the teams.Natalie's transition from her profession as an anthropologist to a creativity specialist, as she calls it, is a wonderful evolution - not denying that in the process, she also had moments where she was just in unbelief. She started helping companies find ways they could design more as an organization. In this episode, we will learn more about company strategies for a better culture, orthogonal thinking, and taking a creativity leap.---------- Natalie Nixon, Ph.D. is a creativity strategist, global keynote speaker, and author. It is a known fact that families need wealth to be economically secure and create opportunities for the next generation. A close examination of wealth in the U.S. finds evidence of staggering racial disparities between black and white households. Recently, the Institute for Policy Studies and Prosperity Now reported that if all things remain the same, the median African-American household wealth will be zero by 2053. Sadly, this has only been made worse with the pandemic and the many challenges of the past year. Living Cities, a non-profit dedicated to providing “economic security for all,” recently commissioned Figure 8 Thinking to conduct their study – Radical Collaboration for Black Wealth Creation - examining philanthropy's role in addressing this disparity. Join us for an insightful discussion with Natalie Nixon and Peri Higgins about the report and the power of partnership and creativity. Natalie W. Nixon, PhD, is a creativity strategist, global speaker and president of Figure 8 Thinking, LLC. She emboldens companies to apply creativity and foresight for transformative business results. She is the author of The Creativity Leap: Unleash Curiosity, Improvisation and Intuition at Work and Strategic Design Thinking: Innovation in Products, Services Experiences and Beyond. Peri Higgins' experience spans the investment banking, private equity, real estate and consulting industries. On today's show, Creativity Strategist and author, Natalie Nixon, explains the importance of creativity in our performance and work results. Natalie's book, The Creativity Leap: Unleash Curiosity, Improvisation and Intuition At Work, explains HOW we can become more creative, why it is not only important, but essential, to the survival and thriving of any company or organization. In today's world, businesses operate around their bottom line- more sales, more leads, more success stories. But it's in taking a step back and engaging in activities that might seem superfluous, but are actually critical for long term growth, that creativity is unleashed, ideas flow, strengths are utilized, intuition is realized, and bottom lines rise more than they would in a discipline-only environment. But don't think of this creativity as a warm, fuzzy, kumbaya camp-fire moment- no, Natalie has an actual step by step science she has developed (which she now teaches to companies and organizations) to combine the key elements of creativity into our life and work. As an anthropologist, fashion designer, dancer, consultant, Ted-X speaker and researcher, Natalie's portfolio and experience is as diverse as her ideas are thorough. You will learn so much from today's interview, and you will see some incredible results in your own life and projects when you put Natalie's ideas to use!
