In this episode, we talk with Ian Ellis, Technology Strategist, Angel Investor, Venture Partner and Founder of the London Enterprise Tech Meetup. Ian Ellis is an experienced Technology Strategist who has driven C-level stakeholder engagement across some of world's leading organisations, including Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Prudential Financial, Microsoft and Bank of Ireland. His work involves aligning the high-level objectives for an organisation with its technology and business strategies, particularly related to how it drives practical innovation and also engagement with the external ecosystem of emerging technologies, investors and incumbent tech players.Ian covers a lot of topics including generative AI and its potential applications, reporting requirements around ESG, and the need for thoughtful regulation, responsible innovation, and sustainable practices in the financial services industry.3 Takeaways:Well placed regulations can help drive innovationVirtual advancements are having physical, global impactsFinOps is on the riseKey Quotes: “One of the things that people never think about is the importance of regulation. I think if you look at financial services and regulation in Europe, I think the European Union has been a very enabling force within the financial services ecosystem, with things like SEPA, PSD2, and all these types of regulations that drive, [or] actually force innovation a little bit. I think about regulation as a breathing thing, or a human thing is the wrong thing to way to describe it. But if you look across regions and how they regulate that has an impact on the innovation ecosystems in those regions.”“Actually, what the FinTech lab helped people realize is that the financial services industry and the ecosystem is, it's not a zero-sum game. There are winners and losers on all sides. So, if you disrupt a retail bank in say, you know, foreign currency, you're probably actually making money for an investment bank or a broker dealer on the other side. So, banks win somewhere else if they don't win on the front line in retail, they're winning in the backend and syndicating something.”“Because the thing with financial products [is] often [that] they're reasonably similar with nuances and differences on the edge, and sometimes those differences are important, sometimes they're not. So, working out how to think about that type of stuff in a way that makes sense. I think some of the challenges around AI and loading large volumes of data in is the time to market stuff. So that you need to think about the data being current. Nobody made money in a market looking at yesterday's data or the day before that.”“So, it's like everything ties back to physical somewhere. And the costs of some of these technologies are things that people don't think about enough in terms of sustainability.”Ian EllisTechnology Strategist, Angel Investor and Founder of the London Enterprise Tech MeetupBio:Ian Ellis is an experienced technology strategist who has driven C-level stakeholder engagement across some of world's leading organisations, including Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Prudential Financial, Microsoft and Bank of Ireland. We are ending Black History Month with a special conversation as Nicole Lashae Ben, CEO of Thrive In Design, and Tamara Archer, a returning guest, share their experiences navigating the interior design industry as black women. Since 2020, there has been a rise in conversation and increased focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The interior design industry has only scratched the surface on these efforts.   Nicole and Tamara, both graduated from interior design school with honors and one of the world's top art and design schools for graduate school, but each faced discrimination and had potential employers question their abilities. Listen in to learn how they navigated these challenges, finally got a chance to thrive, and how they've each created their own lanes in an industry where it's rare to see someone that looks like them. The duo also shares how they hope to see leaders in the industry take strides forward this year and in years to come.    Tamara Archer is the Founder and CEO of T.Archer Design, a boutique interior design firm specializing in hospitality and residential. Raised in Brooklyn, NY, with Trinidadian roots, her design aesthetic is inspired by different cultures, world travel, architecture, and nature. Tamara's approach to creating beautiful, timeless interiors involves an exotic flair with an urban edge. She enjoys helping her clients improve the energy in their homes and businesses to find balance with designs that inspire, relax, and rejuvenate. Tamara has a Bachelor's degree in Interior Design and a Master's degree in Design Management.   Ready to jump in?   Key Highlights from the Episode: [00:01] Episode intro and a quick bio of the guest; Tamara Archer [01:53] What has recently been inspiring Tamara in interior design [03:15] Tamara's transition from residential design to hospitality  [05:24] Her journey in hospitality design [07:13] What comes to Tamara's mind when she hears DEI in interior design [08:30] Tamara's experiences of exclusion as a black woman in this industry [10:19] How creating her own space gave her room for inclusion [11:39] What do stakeholders in the interior design space need to do for the DEI initiative [14:58] Impact of remote working on Tamara's work [15:48] How hybrid work and digital experience will shape the future of interior design [16:51] Adaptations Tamara does in the interior design projects for DEI and hybrid work [18:11] Episode's golden nuggets from the guest [19:08] New and exciting things that Tamara is working on in her company and the best ways to connect [19:35] Episode wrap-up and calls to action Notable Quotes:  Hospitality design is much broader than just hotels and resorts. In this week's pod, we were joined by Paul Waskett to discuss Project Controls in design and engineering stages. Paul is a Director of Adept Management where he takes responsibility for the development of their Project Controls tools and services, as well as supporting clients and projects across the construction industry. Since 2014, Paul has been supporting two major rail projects. He is a Mechanical Engineer by background and has over 20 years' experience in Design Management and Project Controls. In addition, Paul has spent time working in central government, where he managed a construction innovation budget, and as a researcher where he developed some of Adept Management's innovative approaches to design planning and management. The main topics we discussed on the podcast were as follows: There is generally more scrutiny on the construction part of a design and build contract however both need equal attention in order to manage projects effectively Design planning is not as linear as other types of programmes. There are generally more interdependencies and iterations of designs Build a WBS and identify relevant activities and inputs before starting the planning process As the project is delivered, the Last Planner System can be used to monitor progress Using % complete to measure design progress can be difficult to implement consistently Working from home has made it more difficult to promote communication and problem solving in major projects as the relevant stakeholders are not collaborating as often as they would in an office based environment Earned Value Management only works when rules of credit are in place and all stakeholders are aware of the limitations of it being the sole measure of progress Digital twin can help engineers to assess the effect of what may seem like a small scale change on a design It is prudent to have a sole interface between engineering and project management in order to deliver a consistent message One of the key challenges for Engineering Managers is to get the “commitment” from the engineering team(s) to deliver to a specified date or budget Here are links to some of the topics we discussed: The Latham Report – Constructing The Team: https://constructingexcellence.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Constructing-the-team-The-Latham-Report.pdf Adept Management: https://www.adeptmanagement.com/ Last Planner System: https://leanconstructionblog.com/What-is-the-Last-Planner-System.html Join us next week when we speak to Tony Welch to discuss five levers for change. About Christine Miller Christine Miller is a design educator, researcher, and practitioner working at the intersection of anthropology, design, and business. Her Ph.D. research integrated anthropology, management/organizational studies, and business in an ethnographic study of process formalization and the relationship between innovation and formalization at a Tier One automotive supplier. She also studies technology-mediated communication, knowledge flows within pluridisciplinary groups and teams, and the emergence of co-located and technology-enabled collaborative innovation networks (COINs). She is currently a Co-PI on a NSF grant studying the ethics and cultures of STEM research groups. She is exploring how developing context-specific ethical guidelines co-designed by lab and research group members might help cultivate ethical culture.  She currently teaches at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. From the fall of 2014 until May 2018, she taught at IIT in Chicago for the Stuart School of Business and in the Institute of Design.
