Kim Krause Schwalm is one of my copywriting heroes, and true to the final line in this episode, talking to her gets me all kinds of fired up and feisty in the BEST possible way. Today we're talking about some big mistakes many freelancers make when landing their first clients, and how it robs you of your power, leading to frustration and burnout. Look, if you've struggled to communicate with clients, it's not your fault… there's not exactly a “How to People: Entrepreneur Edition” manual out there to guide you through building successful client relationships. That's why I love everything about this episode… Kim's gonna take you by the hand and show you the difference between bending over backwards (and giving away all your power) and becoming your clients' ally and trusted expert. Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:How I simultaneously nailed and flubbed my first big project (hint: I did a great job but didn't sleep much while getting it done) The end of life as we know it: what I learned from letting my anxiety play out to the worst case scenario (nuclear winter, FYI)... and how it led to the creation of this podcast A simple script Kim uses that will help you slam the door down on uncomfortable advances and people who push your boundaries… solidifying their respect for you in the process What to say when the conversation turns to money: Kim's strategy for confidently taking control without being forced into on-the-spot panic pricing Why it pays to NOT start working on a project right away, even if you're wide open and available (this one's counter-intuitive but powerful) You don't want to miss this one. Listen now! Kim's Bio:KIM KRAUSE SCHWALM was always a marketer who could write copy. She spent more than 13 years in the corporate world in various marketing positions—from Brand Manager to Publisher to launching and running the Healthy Directions supplement business and growing it to more than $23 million in sales within 3 years—before she started her freelance copywriting career in 1998.Now more than two decades later, Kim has built a reputation as one of the top direct response copywriters in the country. She's racked up dozens of successful direct mail and online controls, beating legendary copywriters like Jim Rutz and Parris Lampropoulos and becoming the first female copywriter to get a Boardroom control.Kim writes winning copy for leading companies such as Soundview, Bottom Line (Boardroom), Green Valley Natural Solutions, National Geographic, and many others both in the United States and from England to Germany to Singapore. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics from Miami University in Ohio, and earned her MBA in Marketing from Loyola University Maryland. Kim credits her creative and analytical mind and marketing know-how for giving her a must-needed edge in today's increasingly competitive copywriting world—and wants to help others gain the same “marketing-savvy” advantage. She's one of the few top-level copywriting veterans who's still writing copy for clients…while being willing to share her success secrets to help up-and-coming copywriters go from “good” to “great”.You can learn more about Kim's copywriting training programs and read her blog at www.KimSchwalm.com. On this episode, KB & Jay sit down with Robert Pauley III, aka The Welthe Guy, aka The Professor of Style (he has a lot of nicknames, but I promise he’s earned all of them). Robert is a style expert and custom clothier. Robert takes us on a journey from his childhood growing up in the Soundview section of the Bronx to where he is today-a walking business. Robert is vulnerable when he shares with us his journey growing up in foster care, but always had a spirit of giving back. From young, Robert always had hustle, and it has served him well through his journey. He also talks about how he took a chance on himself, quitting his corporate job to build his own brand and legacy-that was the beginning of the WELTHE Guy. Robert is inspiring, humble, thoughtful, and hilarious. I know you will enjoy this interview as much as we did. And if you are looking to get fresh with a new coat or suit hit him up! He won’t disappoint!

Our guest for the 87th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast is none other than A-list copywriter Paul Martinez. We covered a lot of ground in this one, including how Paul landed a place as Parris Lampropolous’ copy cub (for seven years) and his process for finding ideas that hook the reader so they’ll see his offers. The resources he shares are excellent. Here’s most of what we cover in this episode: • how an English degree and a job in real estate helped him find copywriting • what he did to recover from losing almost everything and how that still impacts how he spends his time today • what he learned from real estate sales and how that’s made him a better writer • what he did to find clients as a new copywriter and the #1 thing that reallymade a difference • how you get yourself in the right room with the right people • what he learned as a copy cub for one of the world’s best copywriters • what you can do right now to be a better copywriter (you may not want to do this) • how he keeps his copywriting skills sharp today • how Paul finds big ideas playing around on the internet all day long • how he structures his projects today (and his advice about retainers) • how he deals with failures That’s a lot of hows and whats—and every one of them is worth the listen. Kira: You’re invited to join the club for episode 87, as we talk with copywriter and business owner Paul Martinez about digging deep to turn things around after losing it all, the importance of sales skills in copywriting, emotional hot buttons and what really makes people buy, and what it takes to create successful promotions for companies like Motley Fool, Soundview, and Nature City. Kira:Welcome Paul. Rob: Hey, Paul. Paul:Hi; hi guys. Kira: How’s it going? Paul: It’s going great; great to be here. Rob:Yeah, we’re stoked to have you here. Kira:So Paul, a great place to start is with how you ended up as a copywriter. Paul:Yeah, sure, sure. So I began my journey actually in the real estate world. Well, going a little further back, my background is actually I went to school for fiction writing and ending up getting an English degree. I pretty quickly realized that, you know, that really wasn’t going to pay the bills. So I ended up in real estate, and actually discovered that I really liked sales. And I was pretty good at it, I studied it a lot. I got better and better but, there was a problem: that I didn’t know how to generate leads. And, you know, this was 2000, 2001. Real estate marketing at that point was, believe it or not, still really based around cold calling. Like, literally going through this thing called a “colds directory”, which was like a phone book, but it has a little diamond next to the people who owned a house. And my broken told me, just like,
