At the end of July, Jack River dropped an open letter calling for more Aussie music airplay at the Olympics. A slew of Aussie artists have backed calls by Jack River for Channel 7 to play Australian music during the network's coverage of the Olympics, as the country's artists continue to endure yet another wave of gig cancellations and postponements due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, restrictions and border closures. “How great would it be if you played all Australian music in your coverage of the Olympics? These are Australian moments, they deserve Australian music,” said Jack River. “And while we're here, how good would it be to hear Aussie music in Coles, Woolies, Aldi, in banks, on hold, in stores and on ads being shown to Australian for the next few months?” she added. “We need you more than ever. We wanna be your soundtrack.” River's call was met with support from artists like Lime Cordiale, Annie Hamilton, B Wise, Vera Blue, Cub Sport and Jaguar Jonze, who wrote, “HELL YES. Our domestic music quota is so low compared to other countries supporting their own artists.” Unveiled Thursday (Aug. 5), Our Soundtrack Our Stories is a cross-industry project which calls on corporations, media and “anyone willing to listen” to soundtrack Australian lives with homegrown music. The indie artist and entrepreneur's words didn't fall on deaf ears. Channel 7, Channel 9, Coles, 7-Eleven and Bank Australia listened and have taken action. Last week, River launched the Our Soundtrack Our Stories campaign, which invites the wider business community and beyond to discover, champion, share, and consume more local music, which, in short time, will generate essential streaming and sales royalties for struggling artists. The gameplan is a simple one. Play more Australian music, more of the time. A factsheet shared by the pool of partners recommends business owners play local music in their stores and business (and, of course, obtain the right license by visiting OneMusic), spin a radio station that champions local artists, and share the campaign social assets. To join the movement, artists are encouraged to work their social accounts, push the assets, tag businesses that should do more (and give a shout-out to the supporters), create and share themed playlists, and get creative. The industry's hardship is brought into sharp focus in a new report from I Lost My Gig, which found artists and professionals had lost $64 million in revenue lost since July 1, with almost the entire sum uninsurable. The real figure is likely significantly higher. To play a part in Our Soundtrack Our Stories, use the hashtag #OurSoundtrackOurStories on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. We had the pleasure of interviewing Merk over Zoom video! Merk is the musical moniker of Auckland, New Zealand artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Mark Perkins who began his career as a touring member of Tom Lark and Fazerdaze. Merk’s recent singles “H.N.Y.B” and “GOD” have already earned critical acclaim spanning SPIN Magazine and BBC Radio 6. Today, he reveals new single/video “Laps Around The Sun'' alongside the announcement of his debut globally released album Infinite Youth due out April 9 on Humblebrag Records. This is a record that thrives on a certain simplicity of rhythm, melody, and lyric, and is compelled by contrast: pop songs influenced by art music, an album about adulthood that reflects heavily on what it is to be young, and a sonic world that is both expansive and deeply intimate. Pop songs that transcend the basic, disregard the complex, and zero in on the simple: Merk seeks to find where ABBA, The Beach Boys, The Carpenters, the Japanese City Pop of the late 70s and 80s meet. An album that will capture you on first listen and then reward your every repetition, Infinite Youth reintroduces Merk and invites you, warmly, into his orbit. Perkins learned the craft of recording and producing under the stewardship of Crowded House’s (and now Fleetwood Mac’s!) Neil Finn while working at Roundhead Studios. His debut album Swordfish went on to win Best Debut Album at the Taite Music Prize (New Zealand’s equivalent of the Mercury or Polaris Prize), and led to tours with Cub Sport, Marlon Williams and Julia Jacklin in Australia and New Zealand. Cub Sport have been global leaders in a shift in pop music culture, one that sees Artists publicly embracing their sexuality, and expressing it in bright colours for all of us to experience. Jack River caught up with Cub Sport’s Tim Nelson during isolation just a few months after Tim publicly freed himself of the gender binary, an act that he described as not “about finding a new label that makes him feel comfortable” but “about removing labels” and becoming “free to form his own self not built by others.” To connect head to @torebelinthetimes on Instagram. Tim shares the story of coming out to his parents and fans and the different reactions people had, pushing himself to be the frontman of the band without hiding behind an instrument and gets into his songwriting process. Tim’s strange show story was illustrated by Tim’s fiancé Sam Netterfield who also plays in Cub Sport. You can see more of his drawings and tattoos on instagram @bolanink. 2016 has been a huge year for Brisbane's Cub Sport: They've released their long-awaited debut album This is Our Vice, played two huge shows with The 1975 and completed a totally sold-out national tour. It's a long way removed from when Tim Nelson originally recruited Zoe Davis, Sam Netterfield and Dan Puusaari to play music together - and although the group are still in their early twenties, their inter-connected history runs deeper than what you might expect. Recorded in Sydney at the Warren View Hotel, the band goes on a rapid fire run-through of what Zoe would later describe as "[her] life flashing before [her] eyes." "This is Our Vice" is out now. The band will be going on tour in October and November with special guest Bec Sandridge. It's a buy one, get one free episode! First up is Cub Sport frontman Tim Nelson, who was so drawn to Jay Hulme's poem Jesus At The Gay Bar that the band's new album shares its name. Nelson grew up in a devout Christian community and struggled to reconcile his religious upbringing with his queerness. His mother has fully embraced his identity and Nelson saw parallels to the strength of their bond in Hulme's depiction of Jesus' compassion. In the second half of the episode, TEKE::TEKE bassist Mishka Stein shares his love for Ridley Scott's magnum opus Blade Runner. Since childhood, Stein has been drawn to the beauty in every frame of Blade Runner, its poetic dialogue, and the atmospheric soundscape provided by Vangelis' legendary score.Listen to Cub Sport frontman Tim Nelson and TEKE::TEKE bassist Mishka Stein chat about this and more in the new episode.
