The musician reflects on the epic evolution of her singing from practical childhood speech therapy to sacred musical fluency.Meg Washington was born in a musical home in Port Moresby, where her parents had met as Australian expats.Meg and her sister spent a lot of their time watching classic Hollywood musicals and also down at the local yacht club where their dad DJ'd every Saturday night.Singing became something Meg was encouraged to do herself after she developed a stutter as a little girl. And eventually it grew from a therapy into a thrill.Meg's stutter was something she did her best to disguise while building her career as a singer and songwriter in Australia. But after going public about her speech impediment in a TedX Talk, Meg realised she no longer cared about hiding who she was. This honesty led to a whole host of exciting new opportunities – including becoming the voice of Calypso in Bluey, and making a film with her husband based on the iconic Paul Kelly song, “How To Make Gravy”.This episode of Conversations explores origin stories, parenting, artists, music-making, Hugo Weaving, reflection, family dynamics, Australian music scene, Christmas movies, motherhood, TedX, Ted Talk, public speaking, speech impediments, speech therapy, Papua New Guinea, PNG, expats, Australian expats, Christianity, religion, spirituality, The Deb, Rebel Wilson, The Killers, Hot Fuss, Batflower Records.

Helen Perris shares how becoming a prolific songwriter has significantly improved her mental health and how commitment versus perfection has played a vital part in that. We also discuss how songwriting regularly can help with detaching from the outcome of the song and how this opens the creative space up to so much magic. As a home-based business owner and mum of two children, Helen shares some practical parenting tips for finding the space and time to write, and how to minimise distractions to be able to get into flow state when the family is at home. A rich and rewarding listen. Helen also performs her new song “Over Again” live at I Heart Songwriting Club HQ.Timestamp: 2:35 - Commitment and consistency versus perfection7:50 - Songwriting progress isn't linear, Helen shares some tips for effective learning13:57 - We discuss editing songs and the impact of writing a huge volume of songs 20:02 - Helen shares how regularly writing songs in a community has helped her mental health24:09 - How virtual songwriting spaces can be meaningful28:40 - Formal music training versus learning through experience 34:18 - We discuss the mental load or headspace to write songs, being in flow state 37:33 - We talk about some of the funny songs we've written and how this can unlock creativity 41:45 - How to cultivate space to write at home with a busy household51:27 - Helen shares about how she wrote “Over Again”, a love song to her husband and performs for us.1:02:21 - Helen discusses her upcoming projects and reflects on her songwriting development over the past 10 years About Helen Perris: Self-confessed dork with a keyboard, Helen Perris, combines the influences of her regional AM radio and musical theatre upbringing with more contemporary sounds. Eschewing the major-label model, she has successfully crowd-funded her two EPs and launched her own subscription community (similar to Patreon) to work on her music directly with her fanbase. She has been shortlisted for both the 2016 and 2017 Australian Songwriters Association Contest in two categories, was a finalist in two categories in the 2016 Australian Independent Music Awards, and was named in the National Top 20 (and Top 10 for NSW/NT/QLD/WA) Songwriters for the inaugural Listen Up Australia competition in 2016.Since launching her solo career in 2011, Helen Perris has shared a stage with Amanda Palmer, Kate Miller-Heidke, Brendan Maclean, Kim Boekbinder and others, and her unique and honest suite of songs have been heard in iconic venues such as The Butterfly Club (Melbourne), The Newsagency (Sydney) and El Rocco's (Sydney), and performed at Peats Ridge Festival, TEDx Canberra and in the world's smallest music venue, Folk in a Box at Sydney Festival.Contact Helen: BandcampFacebookInstagramYouTubeSong Credit: “Over Again” - Music and Lyrics by Helen Perris. Hello everyone, This is Mirko Guerrini, and I welcome you to the Jazz Transcription Clinic, a monthly interviews podcast where we talk with accomplished jazz doctors about their lives, careers and their personal transcription secrets. On this episode of the Jazz Transcription Clinic Podcast Mirko Guerrini interviews the guest jazz doctor: Stephen Magnusson Listen to Steve Magnusson's answers to the questions below: Why do you transcribe? 03:47 What do you expect to learn from a transcription? 17:41 How do you choose the solos to transcribe? 24:21 What is your transcribing methodology? 33:08 Do you use any software? 45:45 Which transcription of yours is your favourite? 01:09:05 Artists mentioned in this episode: Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Dmitri Sostakovic, Charlie Parker, Charles Lloyd, Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Brad Mehldau, Sonny Rollins a.o. Stephen Magnusson is considered one of Australia's most accomplished, versatile and distinct musicians with incredible technique and an astoundingly beautiful tone. His hectic schedule shows that he is a delight to work with and someone that has ‘something to say' in the world of improvised music. He was given his first ukulele at 3, his first guitar at 6 and began performing at 10 on an electric guitar that he loaned from his schoolteacher. At 13, he started to study under the guidance of Gordon Pendleton at the Box Hill Tafe and discovered the world of improvised music. In 1986, he studied at the esteemed Victorian College of the Arts under the supervision of some of Australia's finest musicians – Tony Gould, Bob Sedergreen and Mike Doyle. Here he expanded his practice regime and playing. He joined various bands playing numerous styles and developed an understanding of different methods. But, his main focus remained, to develop and hone the craft of mastering the guitar. He travelled to Europe and lived there and after being appointed on the staff at The Academy of Contemporary Music (Zurich) in 1997, Stephen met his long time collaborator – Sergio Beresovsky. They began to perform regularly with Swedish bassist – Bjorn Meyer and in the July of the same year, Australian saxophonist Julien Wilson travelled to meet and play with the trio. After the first week of playing, they formed SNAG and produced a self-titled album (released in Australia ‘Hey Guess What'). After 3 years of living in Zurich, Stephen returned to Melbourne in August 2000. He entered the National Jazz Award at Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival, where he tied for first place amongst much controversy. At this festival, he performed with his trio featuring Sergio and Eugene Ball. This recorded result is captured on the CD ‘Healing Songs'. He has worked with many artists including Charlie Haden, Meshell Ndegeocello, Ricki Lee Jones, Sinead O'Connor, John Cale, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Paul Grabowsky, Vince Jones, Katie Noonan, Lisa Young, Christine Sullivan, Michelle Nicole, Martin Breeze, The Assumptions Trio, Megan Washington, Paul Kelly, Jim Black, Mike Nock, Barney McAll, Enrico Rava, Arthur Blythe and many others. As a part of the Katie Noonan trio Elixir, the ensemble won the ARIA for Best Jazz Album in 2011. In 2013, Stephen was awarded the Melbourne Prize for Outstanding Musician, and the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album with his quartet MAGNET (with Carl Pannuzzo, Eugene Ball and Sergio Beresovsky). Stephen is currently concentrating on writing for his duo Boundaries with Frank DiSario, and trio MAG featuring DiSario and Dave Beck. He will also be completing the second release from MAGNET, SOM. Josh from the band Joined John on the Phone , we talked about there current track 'Uilohi" and some of the bands previous releasesLittle King are a mish-mash of musical genres, unapologetically staying outside the box, this crafty act mould haunting vocals, cheeky riffs, dope rhythms and a collection of effects to create something a little bit interesting. Their tunes are completely accessible but at the same time, for want of a better word, still unique.Based on the Mid North Coast of NSW, Little King members Joshua McGovern & Chris Boaz have played together under various guises for the best part of 9 years and teamed up to create some unique pseudo-pop-electro-soul vibes. With influences that include Chet Faker, Jordan Rakei, Fat Freddy's Drop, and Drake to name a few, Little King combines their hybrid pop-electro-funk-soul sound with clever melodies and catchy hooks creating a cocktail of musical tastiness.Their foray into the live music scene started in 2015, having been successful in an original song competition, they were selected support Donavon Frankenreiter on one of his east coast shows prior to his appearance at the Byron Bay Blues & Roots Festival.Their debut self-titled EP was produced by Alex Gooden, who has previously worked with Evermore, Bluejuice and Megan Washington, at Myrtle Street Studios in Sydney, and released in June on the North Coast, followed by a brief East Coast tour and a two week tour of New Zealand’s South Island, where their music was extremely well received.Between the back-and-forth of touring the East Coast, promoting their EP, of which they are receiving airplay all over the country, surfing and skating, Little King continue to spend their days tucked away in the Hinterland of the Coffs Coast, writing, rehearsing and performing.

Megan Washington is one of my favourite people to talk to. Ever since we first met her ten years ago, she's been an open book, who has an incredible perspective on creativity. On and off air, a conversation with Meg is never small talk, and you always feel richer for it. Washington's music career began as a jazz singer, she morphed into a pop artist, and explored avant garde experiments in the years that followed. Her latest work is textured, synth filled pop music, with the lyrical weight of a decade fully lived. But will this shapeshifter rest here? Across five songs, Megan Washington wears her creative chameleon heart on her sleeve; you can hear the thread of each of her choices, sewn into what she has crafted herself. From Split Enz to Talk Talk, Kendrick to Mitski, and an unforgettable story about Rufus Wainwright, these are the songs that fill Meg's chameleon heart. Rufus Wainwright - 'Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk' Split Enz - 'I See Red' Talk Talk - 'It's My Life' Kendrick Lamar - 'King Kunta' Mitski - 'Nobody'

School's in, and Mary's been researching for the occasion. Or at least, furiously Googling "steiner school + gnomes" - and it's turned up some fascinating facts about what seems to be the education model at Bluey's school, and why there are so many gnomes everywhere. Small spirits aside, we're both in awe of how all-wise Calypso brings out the best selves of all the kids, with the lightest touch - can you believe we both struggle to take a back seat in play?! And we congratulate Megan Washington (who plays Calypso) on becoming a mum last year, and wonder whether Dave McCormack (Bandit) actually has kids - surely, right?! (Literally a week after we recorded this, this great interview in The Guardian confirmed it for us. We knew it!) Food Court: The members of Sydney’s Food Court met at a party under the Glebe tram-tracks and started jamming 60's garage blessed with some 90's fuzz bosh. The band features Cristian Campano (ex-Betty Airs) on vocals/guitar, Lewis Mckeown (Pretend Eye) on bass/vocals, Dan De Santis on guitar and Nic Puertolas (ex-Salvagers) on drums. 2013 saw the release of their debut EP “Smile At Your Shoes” and a string of singles followed. They then followed up with 2014’s “Big Weak” and a full length entitled “Good Luck” which was released in 2017. The album was the final LP to be recorded by John Castle in his legendary Shed Studios – where Castle worked his magic on records from the likes of Megan Washington, You Am I and more recently Jack River. Food Court bring energy, riffage and a killer live show drawing rave reviews from fans and critics alike, opening for acts including Courtney Barnett, Dune Rats, Northeast Party House, Beach Slang and Spring King. Recorded at The Woolly Mammoth in Brisbane on the 15h of September 2017. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic. Siamese: Adelaide 4-piece Siamese have caused a stir nationally, through a strong commitment to chaotic, yet commanding live shows and the strength of their songwriting. With their debut singles ‘Computer Patient’, ‘Scatterbrain’ and ‘Slaughterhouse’, the band summons the spirit of alternative rock and shoe gaze, honing a unique, yet evocative sound, reminiscent of 90’s acts HUM, Failure and Unwound. Siamese have supported the likes of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Pond and Flyying Colours, even touring nationally with fellow Adelaide band Horror My Friend. 2017 saw Siamese appear at nationally renowned festivals; Poison City Weekender Festival, A Day of Clarity, Swirl Fest and Against the Grain. Recorded at Against The Grain Fest on the 27th of August 2017. Recorded by Reuben Aptroot and mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 21th of January 2018. Show production and engineering: Reuben Aptroot.
Megan Washington 2014 album There, there.22 September, 2014 3:45PM AEDTMegan Washington on choosing hopeBy Carol DuncanAustralian musician Megan Washington joined ABC Newcastle's Carol Duncan for a chat about her new album, 'There, There'.Megan Washington says that 'Skyline', one of the tracks on her new album 'There, There' is about 'choosing hope'."I think that's a choice we have to make daily. Choosing happiness and choosing positivity is something that you have to make a priority. For me, it's a daily thing.""That song was inspired a few years when I became very ill and woke up in hospital, figuring out how I felt in that moment and what it meant. Those moments can be extremely formulative? Is that a word? The highest of highs and the lowest of lows is when you galvanise your resolve to overcome things and that was one of mine."Whilst not new to the music industry it would be surprising if her audience hadn't increased substantially after her appearance on ABC TV's Australian Story and her frank discussion of growing up with a stutter. It was wonderful to watch the flood of support from many thousands of people sent to her via social media after the program aired."To be honest with you, I cried a lot after that. I watched the show - because I couldn't not watch it - with some friends and we made a dinner and watched it.""Afterwards, the overwhelming - you used the word 'flood' - and I think that's a great description of it, all these people ... it wasn't so much the goodwill that struck me, it was the resonance, the 'me toos', that I heard and I found really moving. I found it incredible that people could see some of themselves in what I had said.""You've got to understand, I don't know any other version of life than my life. It isn't like I never had a stutter and then I suddenly got one. This is how existence is. To see that brought so many other people together with each other, not so much with me, there was a real sense of us being on the same side, the same team. It's great.""I think it's universal. When I meet anybody the first thing they want to do is tell you their story. People like to tell each other who they are. It's not surprising to me when people do this and drop the act, stop acting out their role."The shortest song on Megan Washington's new album was written in just a few minutes and she says she had the aim of trying to describe a sensation."There must be a word for that like 'onomatopoeiac' but that describes the sensation, the sound reflects the sensation. There must a word for it, a German word!""I wanted to write a song about falling in love that was less about falling in 'lurve' than literally FALLING in love, falling down the stairs or something. The dizziness or giddyness that comes with that. That was the plan. It is the shortest song I've ever written."

If you listen to this show you know that I've a lot of Aussie friends. We see eye to eye on things like pies, beautiful beaches, and vegemite. Through this network I heard about Megan Washington and grew to appreciate her music. At the suggestion of one of these friends I watched her now famous Ted Talk about having a stutter and it blew my mind. My dad grew up with a terrible stutter and used to talk about how challenging it was as a kid. Eventually he got over his, Meg never did, except when she sang… You see where this is going. Although it reads like the script to an inspirational movie I assure you it’s all real. A few months ago we were finally introduced at a show in LA and I just said, "You've got to come on the show!" She did and we had a great time. In 2009 Meg won multiple ARIA's (Australian Grammy) and firmly cemented herself in the Australian musical lexicon. But it hasn't all been easy. Achieving her goals came at a price and getting exactly what she wanted threw her into a near hopeless depression. Like a boss she dealt with it and is still selling out venues and making music. This September she performed multiple shows at the Sydney Opera house and finished her new record.
Reposting one of my favorite episodes from the archive - my chat with sly singer-songwriter Megan Washington. On a particularly spirited episode of “My Favorite Album” this week, 2-time ARIA winner, possible Eurovision contender and loose unit Megan Washington joins host Jeremy Dylan for a rave on Rufus Wainwright's 2001 sophomore album “Poses”. They break down classic track “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk” and along the way talk about the musically abusive relationships within the Wainwright family, the uncanny parallels between “Poses” and Meg's new album “There There”, feeling old fashioned in contemporary music, the debauchery and cattiness of Rufus's lyrics, why time slows down on stage and why performing at Triple J's “Beat the Drum” has inspired Meg to make a disco album - plus Blacula! My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker and music industry exec from Sydney, Australia. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. Seja talk to her guest Megan Washington about her ambitions to be Judy Garland when she was younger, deeply regretting lyrics in retrospect and the three things people bring up the most to her and can’t seem to let go of. They also talk about Meg’s dissatisfaction with the American jazz songbook, Keith Urban calling her out of the blue and how to write songs on dogs. Megan’s story is illustrated by Stacy Gougoulis. On the back of a successful "Solo Sesh" with Gatesy and Poggo, Tripod decide to serve it up fresh™ with a different member of the trio. This time we get some one-on-one time with Scod, Tripod's answer to the question "Can men with beards really play guitar"? Not content with following a simple formula, Poggo and Scod abandon the standard format set by Gatesy (who some rate as the most successful of the previous solo session contributors) and break down two songs - one that Scod no longer likes and one he LOVES. The result? A 90min journey through harmonic and melodic nerdery! In this episode the duo break down "Autistic" along with "Ivory Tower" and then worry whether the audience really want this level of detail. (Do you? Get back to us)! Episode Notes: 01:50 - It's Just The Two Of Us! But with much less rap. 02:30 - Turns out Scod WON'T be putting photos of Poggo's house in the show notes... 14:54 - Recording of Autistic from Songs From Self-Saucing 39:45 - Recording of Ivory Tower from Tripod versus the Dragon 51:10 - Scod's first-concept imagery/lyrics for Ivory Tower 55:57 - Scod's second attempt at writing lyrics for Ivory Tower 1:09:41 - Megan Washington's first demo of Ivory Tower 1:11:20 - Let's break this down musically... Want access to some of the material we covered (lyrics and Megan's demo in full)? Download them here with our compliments. Podcast Shoutout! Check out these two great music podcasts, mentioned in the show, that break down songs. Scod's favourite: Song Exploder Poggo's favourite: Star Wars Oxygen We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a segment. Or, subscribe, rate and comment so we know how many more songs we should continue to "break down".

Megan Washington is one of Australia's premier singer/songwriters. And, since childhood, she has had a stutter. In this bold and personal talk, she reveals how she copes with this speech impediment—from avoiding the letter combination “st” to tricking her brain by changing her words at the last minute to, yes, singing the things she has to say rather than speaking them.
