To know Lauren Mahon is to love her. It's as simple as that. And considering everything she's been through in the last few years, she's also a huge inspiration.Diagnosed with breast cancer at 31, she was the host of the hugely successful podcast You, Me and the Big C with her friends Rachel Bland and Dame Deborah James who have both since died. Lauren, on the other hand, has been in remission for over five years.I didn't want this conversation to be about two huge, defining traumas; her cancer and losing her close friends and I'm so glad because we recorded this episode at a time when Lauren has never felt more hopeful and excited about the future.Though this podcast is about my guests sharing the life lessons they've learned from going through the tougher stuff in life, and how they've come out the other side, that doesn't mean we have to plumb the darkest depths - and as you'll hear in this conversation, there's a lot of light and love!I challenge you to finish this episode and not a) love Lauren but also want b) to punch the air and potentially c) feel as though you can take over the world. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter. After the death of his late wife in 2018, the BBC journalist Rachael Bland, Steve found love again with wife Amy and the couple are expecting twins in April 2023. In this chat, Steve talks about dealing with Rachael's death from breast cancer, coping with the aftermath, getting his life back on track and how he met Amy at a cancer conference. In this week's episode of ‘Open' Emma talks to Heather James about how she is navigating life following the death of her eldest daughter Dame Deborah James, the incredible legacy Deborah left behind and the rather comical behind the scenes moments as the family got ready for the Prince of Wales to pop round for tea.Emma Campbell - @limitless_emwww.limitlessem.comOpen with Emma Campbell is produced by Pretty Fire Audio Productions @prettyfireaudioproductions
She describes herself as having a ‘gob like Dyer and hair like Demi'. She's now clear of breast cancer but having forged a friendship with co-hosts Rachel Bland and Deborah James through the podcast ‘You, Me and The Big C', she speaks openly about her diagnosis and how to practically check your boobs for breast cancer. This episode looks at a woman who has lost two mates in the cancer process. And is here to explain what it is to truly live life. Expect tears, laughter and a significant amount of tit jiggling.
Lauren Mahon and Steve Bland get together for a long awaited catch up. They then bring in producers Mike Holt and Al Entwistle for a very exciting You, Me and the Big C announcement about something we are planning to do in January. We also hear from film director Sara Hardy, who tells us about an amazing project she's been working on - all about our dearly missed friend Dame Deborah James. Don't forget, you can get in touch by using the #YouMeBigC across all forms of social media - spread the word and share the positive support.

However, in 2021 Jill had a sudden pain in her chest and eventually after doubt and misdiagnosis she was found to have had at least one significant heart attack, possibly more. She realised her continued cardiac symptoms were potentially linked to her changing hormones in peri menopause. In our conversation we learn that 90% of SCAD diagnosis's are in women aged between 45-53. And Jill tell us some potentially life saving information. Welcome to Living Well with MS Coffee Break #36, where we are pleased to welcome Dr. Jonathan White as our guest for this very special episode, our 100th podcast in the Living Well with MS series! Keep reading for the key episode takeaways and Jonathan's bio. Make sure you sign up to our newsletter to hear our latest tips and news about living a full and happy life with MS. And if you're new to Overcoming MS, visit our introductory page to find out more about how we support people with MS. Jonathan's bio: Career: Jonathan went to University of Glasgow Medical School, graduating in 2008 (MBChB). He completed a further five years of training in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (MRCOG). He works at the Causeway Hospital, Coleraine and has a special interest in early pregnancy and recurrent pregnancy loss. In April 2022, Jonathan was awarded “Doctor of the Year” at the inaugural Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Awards. Overcoming MS and personal life: Jonathan was diagnosed with RRMS in October 2015 and has been following the OMS Program ever since. Dr. White assists OMS as a medical advisor and event facilitator. He lives on the North Coast of Northern Ireland, is married to Jenny and father to Angus and Struan. His interests include the great outdoors, cycling and running (reluctantly), reading, rugby, film and spending time with his family. You can learn more about his background here. Selected Key Takeaways The new Handbook is an accessible version of the original Overcoming MS book: (8:58) “I've always thought of the main OMS book as being a textbook, almost like a reference guide. Whereas the, Overcoming MS Handbook is a lovely light and easy [book] that you could dip in and out of. I loved reading it and I picked up lots of tips. And it was great to hear from the community itself.” The first 10 years of the Overcoming MS charity's message of hope has been groundbreaking: (13:39) “I think [the OMS charity] has been paradigm shifting and groundbreaking. That message of hope, of us giving people a sense of mastery. That the traditional description of this condition - and how it affects people - doesn't have to be that way through relatively simple things that you can do for yourself. And I think that [message] came at a time where it was so needed. In fact, now it's needed more than ever.” The Overcoming MS Community plays a very important role: (20:41) “[The Overcoming MS Community] fills the bucket completely for me. It's been a wonderful privilege professionally, as well, to be able to spend some time with people, like myself, living with MS. And to hopefully give them a little bit of information, to clarify some things for them and to maybe steer them in the right direction. And then to see the amazing changes that they implement in their lives. It is so gratifying professionally to be able to help someone like that.” Find the life worth enjoying… with rebellious hope: (25:40) “Dame Deborah James, who was a phenomenally passionate cancer campaigner, … sadly passed away in June, 2020. But her very last Twitter post....just spoke to me and I thought she's put this so beautifully. This is exactly how I feel about OMS [Overcoming MS] and MS generally. So I'm going to use her quote. She said, ‘Find the life worth enjoying, take risks, love deeply, have no regrets and always, always have rebellious hope.' And I just love the idea of rebellious hope, because that to me is me and it's me and [Overcoming MS] OMS.” Related Links: Books: Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis and The Overcoming MS Handbook Join an OMS Circle Dame Deborah James' You, Me and the Big C podcast About Coffee Break: Our Coffee Break series is your chance to get to know members of our diverse OMS community. A woman who was diagnosed with stage-four bowel cancer in her late 20s has vowed to continue the work of Dame Deborah James to raise awareness. Rebecca Papa-Adams was given around a year to live 17 years ago and is now cancer free. She's spoken to the podcast about how she was misdiagnosed for 18 months and doesn't want anyone else to go through the same thing. Also in today's episode, we've spent the day in Challock where residents have been without water for almost a week. The boss of a shop there says he's lost thousands of pounds of stock. South East Water say we all need to use supplies more wisely. After the devastating wildfires in Kent this week, there's some hope that wildlife will bounce back. Hear from Stan Smith from the Kent Wildlife Trust. A watchdog says the government's response to people crossing the Channel to Kent in small boats has been 'poor' - and the system is 'overwhelmed'. It found the number making the journey - which is more than 15,000 this year - is 'unprecedented' - and found issues within leadership as well. Hear from pupils at a school in Medway who've got a cardboard cut out of their teacher to keep an eye on them in the classroom after she retires. And in sport it was an amazing night for England at the women's Euros. Hear from Maidstone's Alessia Russo after the made it through to the semi-finals.
In honour of the formidable Dame Deborah James, we are re-releasing this very special podcast episode. Having avidly followed the highs and lows of Deborah's journey, Holly was honoured to have had the pleasure of speaking with her in 2020, and it's a memory she will always treasure in her heart. In this episode, Deborah James, also known as Bowelbabe, joins Holly to talk about the rebellious spirit that would define her journey, from gymnast to Deputy Headteacher, journalist to campaigner — and then coping with the news that so many of us fear. It's quite remarkable now to hear the original plans she made then, which led to her raising millions of pounds for cancer research through her Bowelbabe fund. Deborah has left such a phenomenal mark on the world and her legacy will shine bright forever more. If there are any words to live by, it's Deborah's motto that we should all have no regrets, believe that we can do things we never thought possible, and most importantly — to always, always have rebellious hope.
