Joining us today is the founder of the Singing for Health Network who has worked in music for wellbeing and music education for over 20 years. She is the director of the charity Music for Good and holds a masters degree in vocal pedagogy through the Voice Study Centre, where she is now a senior lecturer. Emily Foulkes joins Alexa this week on Singing Teachers Talk about singing for trauma and the Singing for Health Network.    KEY TAKEAWAYS The Singing for Health Network is a UK-based membership network for anyone interested or involved in Singing for Health, including singing practitioners, researchers, health and healthcare professionals. Their aim is to bridge research and practice and provide a platform for sharing practice and opportunities. The Singing for Health Network model is a work-in-progress representation of the different levels of singing groups, showing where they most commonly fit within the health system. It is intended to help practitioners from both arts and health sectors to understand which types of groups suit different conditions and needs. Emily's research took her in the direction of looking at trauma, mental health, and pain management. She ran a pilot research project for people with chronic pain while also training to be a trauma and mental health practitioner.  There is research that leans towards the idea that singing can improve mental health, especially singing in groups can help us connect with other people and build relationships which is beneficial to mental health.  Chronic pain is pain that lasts for more than three months and can't be treated. Chronic pain is associated with depression and other mental health issues.    BEST MOMENTS ‘We're hard wired to sing, we were singing before we were speaking'  ‘We can see  the connectivity of singing together' ‘If I could do this every day, I think I could manage my pain so much better'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training    Guest Website: www.singingforhealthnetwork.co.uk www.musicforgood.uk www.voicestudycentre.com   Social Media:  (Instagram) @thesingingforhealthnetwork (Instagram) @em.foulkes (Facebook) Singing for Health Network Forum (Twitter) @NetworkSinging  (Twitter) @EmilyFoulkes1   Relevant Links & Mentions:  The British Lung Foundation: lunguk.org Phoene Cave & The Musical Breath: www.themusicalbreath.com Dr Stephen Clift; Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health at Canterbury Christ Church University  Bjorn Vickhoff et al; Choral Singing Has a Soothing Effect on Heart Rate: https://culturecase.org/research/2014/05/choral-singing-has-a-soothing-effect-on-heart-rate/ (For trauma awareness) Peter Levine; The Body Holds the Score by Bessel van Der Kolk; Stephen Porges Polyvagal Theory  Singing for Health Network Partners: Sound Sense; Sing Up & Sing Up Foundation; Making Music; Natural Voice Network  Sing Up: https://www.singup.org/ ABOUT THE GUEST  Emily has worked in Music for Well-being and Music Education for over 20 years, from national level at Youth Music, managing grant funding and networks to working as a practitioner. Called The Power of Music to Change Lives, their ambition is for every pupil to have at least one hour of high quality music education a week. We speak to Veronica Wadley, Baroness Fleet, the chair of the advisory panel that published the report, and YolanDa Brown who contributed to it as a MOBO award-winning saxophonist and Chair of Youth Music.

Travis Dempsey grew up in rural Victoria in a dysfunctional family. At 15 he spent his time skateboarding, getting in fights with his mates, and moving from school to school as a result of this behavior. A high school teacher changed his life and set him on his musical path when he sent Travis to a time-out room that contained an old drum kit. Travis began hitting the drums and instantly felt connected to this instrument. Travis's family wasn't in a position to be able to afford to purchase a kit for him, and once again his teacher helped him by delivering a very basic kit to his home. He eventually joined a band with friends called 'Slaves of Pain', gigging locally. Travis left school when he was 16, first working as an apprentice Boiler Maker for about 4 or 5 months, and then as an apprentice Horticulturist until he decided to move away from the family home, making his way to Melbourne where he lived in Fitzroy. He managed to get a job working at Drummers Paradise in Richmond and began making connections with other musicians and playing in a variety of bands. Travis then got a job at the iconic Revolver Drum Shop which was located in Prahran, and it was while he was working there that he met Chris the bass player from The Living End. Chris mentioned that they were looking for a new drummer, so Travis who was looking for a regular band to play with told him that he would be interested in having a go. Chris gave him a demo tape and they arranged a time for Travis to come and have a jam. Travis initially didn't feel as though he was the right guy for the band, but on his third jam with the guys, he decided to play the songs his own way, this time it worked and he became their new drummer. After a year of solid touring things began to skyrocket after the release of the double A-side single, a single ‘Second Solution / Prisoner of Society' that had the band breaking records, with it becoming the highest-selling single of the '90s, scoring the band an ARIA Award and a whole lot more attention both nationally and internationally, with World Tours alongside AC /DC, Green Day, The Offspring, Chilli Peppers, Rancid, and Silver Chair. Playing and headlining international Festivals, TV Appearances on David Letterman, and Conan O Brian, living the life that most aspiring musicians can only dream about, a world of rock stardom. Then after five and a half years, he decided to give up the rock star lifestyle, choosing instead to explore new avenues and musical ventures, working with and creating programs for kids that encouraged them to follow their dreams and pursue their passion for music, no matter what limits society had placed on them. Travis become a youth worker for the not-for-profit organization 'Whitelion' initially working with young offenders, the focus on youth justice became a core strength recognized by governments, the youth sector, corporates, and the general community as making a real difference to young people's lives. He also went to talk in adult prisons throughout Melbourne. During this time Travis set up his own Drum Tech business, working on hundreds of albums and hiring out drum kits for some of the best drummers in the world. He joined the Celt rockers 'The Currency' and played with them until joining the Melbourne three-piece band 'Doubleblack' in late 2012, which allowed him to contribute to the songwriting for their new music. Travis moved to South Australia and continues to work as a Music Youth Officer for local governments. Music "Band It About" theme song written by Catherine Lambert & Michael Bryant. "Renegade" by Doubleblack, Matt Black, formerly of The Fireballs on guitar and lead vocals, Jason Skewes on double bass, and Travis Dempsey on drums. Part of the Humanities Cultural Programme, one of the founding stones for the future Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities. This panel discussion and conversation with artist Khaled Kaddal examines The Formula of Giving Heart as a piercing study of our contemporary socio-political environment. Drawing from a variety of theoretical and creative perspectives, the panellists variously explore such themes as the global increase in physical confinement(s), the rise of cybernetics and biodata, and the continued privileging of contemporary science/medicine as distinct from other historical practices of healing. Exploring these phenomena amid a backdrop of global precarity, The Formula for Giving Heart forges fascinating linkages between seemingly disparate phenomena. It demonstrates how spatial imprisonment exists in and through hyperlinked and technologized (global) networks, ancient Pharaonic languages map onto and exist as contemporary (computer) code, and apparently distinct socio-political events—from the Coronavirus pandemic to the 2011 Egyptian revolution—can feel familiar through the very extraordinary nature of their temporal and affective regimes. Exploring these themes through the world premiere of Kaddal's newest work, this panel broadly considers our present moment as well as the shifting nature of sonic and visual performance during a time of global crisis and ever increasing technologization. Christopher Haworth is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of Birmingham. His scholarly interests lie in the broad areas of electronic music and sound art, which he researches using a mixture of historiographic, philosophical, and ethnographic research methods. Khaled Kaddal is a Nubian visual artist and sound performer, raised in Egypt and currently resident in London. Allaying science and politics, spirituality and technology, he works with two interdependent abstractions; ‘Immortality of Time' and ‘Sovereignty of Space', in search for the imperishable balance between intelligence, emotions and moral judgments. Darci Sprengel is an ethnomusicologist and Junior Research Fellow in Music at St John's College, University of Oxford. Her research examines contemporary music in Egypt at the intersections of technology, capitalism, and politics. She is currently completing her first book, 'Postponed Endings': Youth Music and Affective Politics in Post-Revolution Egypt, which examines Egyptian independent music in relation to conditions of military-capitalism. She has two additional research projects. The first analyses music streaming technologies in the global South using a feminist and critical race approach to digital media. The second explores the influence of sub-Saharan African culture in Egyptian popular culture. Christabel Stirling is a musicologist specialising in ethnographic approaches to music and sound art in contemporary urban environments. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow on the ERC-funded project ‘Sonorous Cities: Towards a Sonic Urbanism', based at the Music Faculty at the University of Oxford. In a special programme to coincide with the London Jazz Festival the outstanding saxophonist YolanDa Brown talks to Michael Berkeley about her passion for spreading the joy of music, especially to children. YolanDa presents 'YolanDa’s Band Jam' on CBeebies and hosts Young Jazz Musician of the Year. She’s an ambassador for BBC Music Day and chair of the charity Youth Music. She has won a string of awards, including two Jazz MOBOs – Music of Black Origin Awards – and her most recent album, 'Love Politics War', topped the jazz charts. Less well known is that she started out on a career in social science research, taking masters degrees in both Operations Management and Methods of Social Research and beginning a PhD before veering back to her first love – music. YolanDa talks about the importance of introducing children to live music at the earliest possible age. Her own daughter responded to music in the womb and went to her first opera at the age of four. We hear music from YolanDa’s own first musical outing to see Iolanthe with her father, also at the age of four. YolanDa describes her vibrant mix of jazz and soul as ‘posh reggae’, influenced by her Jamaican heritage. We hear a track from her latest album and tracks from musicians who have influenced her, including Kamasi Washington, Dave Brubeck and Bobby McFerrin. She talks to Michael about playing the piano and violin as a child; classical music remains very close to her heart, and she chooses music by Schubert and Dvorak. And we hear a special commission from film composer Hans Zimmer, part of the BBC’s Ten Pieces Trailblazers, which was introduced by YolanDa when she presented this year’s CBeebies Proms. It's such a privilege and honour to present this podcast today with the Year 5 students (aged 10), and teachers at Ilfracombe's Church of England Junior School. As a parent of 2 boys under the age of 10, I find the whole conversation about kids online to be incredibly negative and over sensationalised in the media. In an effort to have a more positive discussion, I approached my son's school and asked them could I do a podcast about the subject with the Year 5 teachers and students. The school not only embraced the idea but added a whole layer of additional creativity and flair to the discussion that I could never have imagined, likened to "opening Pandora's Box" by Catherine Cox, the Head Teacher. In this podcast you will hear from Maggie Foster, an Assistant Head Teacher and Head of Music at the school, whose passion and love of her subject is transforming the lives of the children in the school. We hear from Maggie and the pupils about how the Church of England School Values of Wisdom, Hope, Community and Dignity, are shaping the children's lives, both on and offline.Even more so, how music is at the heart of everything the school does, and how the Principles of Taiko drumming, which is a Japanese art of drumming, has recently been adopted by the school. The children share how these Principles can be extended out across all manner of experiences both on and offline. We also hear about the benefits of drumming and what it's like to experience a Taiko drumming session. In addition we share fly-on-the-wall discussions in the class rooms between the children and the teachers as they talk about podcasting, digital media, and how to present themselves positively online. There is so much richness to this podcast and whilst I initially went into the school as a concerned, worried parent, I left feeling humbled, uplifted and inspired by what I heard and experienced whilst being at the school. I would like to extend a massive thank you to the Year 5 teachers who are; James Clatworthy, Kimberley Campbell, Lauren Caller, Phoebe Reed, Will Speed, Rachael Moore and Jo Parsons and a heartfelt thank you to Maggie Foster and Catherine Cox whose total commitment to the subject and the discussion enabled this to happen. To my incredible Sound Engineer and Producer, Will Flisk, who attended and recorded 10 hours of content in the classrooms and helped bring the podcast to life in the studio with me.But most importantly I would like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful children in Year 5. You are so very special and you know so much, you guys are truly inspirational and I want to thank you for being so open and free with your conversation, knowledge and kindness. Together with your teachers, we have turned the conversation about kids online on its head, and you will uplift so many people with your positive messages, insight and voices.Thank you so very much.Fiona xxxAdditional Note;'Drop in the Ocean' is featured in this podcast. The long awaited adaptation of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s cult fantasy novel Good Omens arrives on Amazon on Friday. Samira talks to Michael Sheen and David Tennant who play a fussy Angel and a loose-living Demon forced into an unlikely alliance to stop Armageddon. Brìghde Chaimbeul is a young Gaelic speaking piper from the Isle of Skye and one of Scotland’s rising stars. Brìghde won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2016 and her debut album, The Reeling, has received rave reviews. The pipes she plays, though, aren't the familiar Highland bagpipes but the Scottish Smallpipes. She explains her unusual instrument to Samira Ahmed, and how her style is rooted in her indigenous language and culture, yet draws inspiration from elsewhere - Bulgaria, for instance. And she plays. The charity Youth Music has undertaken research showing that allowing vulnerable students to choose what music they study and play improves their outcomes in school. This has been reported as 'exchanging Mozart for Stormzy', but Matt Griffiths, Youth Music's Chief Executive, that the reality is far from that and more subtle. Samira finds out what it does mean and what Youth Music is doing. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Julian May

In the sixth episode of Youth Music's podcast we talk to people who participated in Exchanging Notes, an innovative four year partnership project between music organisations and schools, funded by Youth Music. Delivery ended in 2018 and our research partner, Birmingham City University, have just completed their report, which is being launched towards the end of May. We discuss the forthcoming research, grounding it in the experience of the practitioners and researchers involved in delivering the programme of work. Over the course of the podcast, we picked up on the key ingredients for an effective partnership; the impact Exchanging Notes had on young people, practitioners and schools; and recommendations for the future, including some ideas about how best to refresh the Key Stage 3 Music Curriculum. At a time when a lot of press coverage is focusing on music in schools being under threat, this conversation looks at how new ways of working can engage young people in school-based music making and support their musical, personal and social development. This episode was hosted by Adam Cookson from Youth Music, and features: Kim Johnson from Derbyshire County Council, Sam Mumford from Drum Works, Helen Briner from The Warren School in Barking & Dagenham, and Victoria Kinsella from Birmingham City University.
