The Mid•Point with Gabby Logan

Podcaster and activist Lauren Mahon popped by the studio this week with her dog, Ray! Lauren chats to Gabby about the seismic impact You, Me And The Big C had on the way people talk about cancer, but also the emotional heavy lifting it required from her on a personal level. She also talks about experiencing a medical menopause as part of her cancer treatment, why it's okay to wallow sometimes, and how liberating it was learning to drive on the cusp of midlife! They also discuss life after cancer, in particular how to approach sex and intimacy - something Lauren is on a mission to get us talking about more. To know Lauren Mahon is to love her. It's as simple as that. And considering everything she's been through in the last few years, she's also a huge inspiration.Diagnosed with breast cancer at 31, she was the host of the hugely successful podcast You, Me and the Big C with her friends Rachel Bland and Dame Deborah James who have both since died. Lauren, on the other hand, has been in remission for over five years.I didn't want this conversation to be about two huge, defining traumas; her cancer and losing her close friends and I'm so glad because we recorded this episode at a time when Lauren has never felt more hopeful and excited about the future.Though this podcast is about my guests sharing the life lessons they've learned from going through the tougher stuff in life, and how they've come out the other side, that doesn't mean we have to plumb the darkest depths - and as you'll hear in this conversation, there's a lot of light and love!I challenge you to finish this episode and not a) love Lauren but also want b) to punch the air and potentially c) feel as though you can take over the world. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram.Watch clips from the podcast >> Youtube | The Emma Guns ShowSign up for my newsletter here >> Newsletter. The community, platform and merchandise brand that she set up after devastatingly being diagnosed with breast cancer at just 31. Her motivation to crush the cancer taboo amongst the younger generation is so admirable, and her energy is a force to be reckoned with! She candidly talks about her cancer diagnosis, how she handled it, and we both speak openly about the “cliffs edge” you feel upon receiving the all clear. I open up about my experiences of dealing with cancer when my brother was diagnosed in 2015, which felt enlightening as it was a conversation with someone who knew exactly what I felt and the darkness that came with the experience, as a family member supporting their sibling. We bond over crisps, specifically Hula Hoops and I think we’ll be friends for life! @iamlaurenmahon@girlsvscancer@crazysexyfood@hannahharleywww.crazysexyfood.com Music by @casnova____ This season of Crazy Sexy Food is sponsored by Keejays.Keejays is an independent, family-run business that has been making speciality sauces for professional chefs and home cooks like myself since 1985.  My particular favourites are the Spanish Tomato sauce, with its added paprika, as well as the Tai Po chilli sauce to rev up my meals! Order my favourites as well as the whole collection from www.keejayssauces.co.uk

From there girl vs cancer was born and it’s been a non stop rollercoaster of amazing opportunities and incredibly overwhelming experiences since then. "Cancer has made my life richer. I've used the fear as a tailwind to live bigger. It's taken away the fear of doing what I want to do. It's made me just want to live my life the best I can. Rather than just sitting there and having an idea, I now have the idea and send the email or I send the text or I investigate. I don't sit on it, I work out how to make it happen. Since being diagnosed with cancer, I know there is no point waiting until tomorrow." My guest this episode is Blogger, Podcaster and Breast Cancer Survivor, Lauren Mahon. Born and bred in London, Lauren says she was the ”bossy one” growing up. After developing an interest in media at college, Lauren went on to study Fashion Marketing at London College of Fashion. After graduating, she spent almost a decade forging a successful career in Fashion Digital Marketing, working for brands such as Radley, Warehouse and BHS – all the while flexing her creative muscles writing her blog Girl Stole London. In August 2016, Lauren’s life changed forever when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31. The day after her diagnosis all the threads of her career came together as she created a range of t-shirts designed to not only raise awareness but also provide a source of income throughout her treatment. Determined to give cancer the middle finger, Lauren started giving voice to her experience using the hashtag GirlVSCancer, creating a community for, in her words, “badass woman making cancer their bitch.” Lauren was given the all-clear two years later, during which time she started co-hosting the award-winning BBC 5 Live podcast ‘You, Me and the Big C’. While cancer is something she wishes never has to experience, Lauren says she has found her ‘purpose’ and can’t wait to keep growing Girl Vs. Cancer. Lauren's story is nothing short of inspirational. We talked all about growing up, the indecision she felt around university and job-hopping in her twenties, what it was like being diagnosed with breast cancer aged 31 - and how this experience has changed the trajectory of her life. Give this episode a listen and I can guarantee you will not only be offered a fresh perspective on life, but you'll also want to be best mates with this legend. **Follow me:** Twitter: [@katiephilo](http://www.twitter.com/katiephilo) Instagram: [@katiephilo](https://www.instagram.com/katiephilo) [www.katiephilo.com](https://www.katiephilo.com) **Follow Lauren: ** Twitter: [@girlstolelondon](https://twitter.com/GIRLSTOLELONDON) Instagram: [@girlstolelondon](https://www.instagram.com/girlstolelondon/) [@girlvscancer](https://www.instagram.com/girlvscancer/) [www.girlvscancer.co.uk](https://girlvscancer.co.uk)

This episode of the Podcastology series includes a discussion about You, Me and the Big C. We recorded it before the death of Rachael Bland. Although the first podcast featured in this episode is about sports – but ranges much wider than that – and the second is about cancer, for Mike, what unites the two ideas is that the relationship between the presenters is the key. With Andrew Flintoff and his co-presenters Robbie Savage and Matthew Syed, Mike said he was confident about the project as soon as the three first talked together: “We sat outside a studio and within less than five minutes, I knew this was going to be amazing.” The three presenters of the cancer podcast, Rachael Bland, Deborah James and Lauren Mahon, knew each other online before the podcast, but had never actually met in person until they recorded together. When it comes to duration Mike is unapologetic about publishing podcasts that last an hour or more: “If the content's good, why do you want to cut it down?” he explains.

Lauren Mahon founded Girl Stole London in 2011 as a way to document her fun filled 20s. However, when Lauren was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2016 at the young age of 31, her website started to play a more crucial role in her life. Since her diagnosis Lauren has unashamedly documented the ups and downs of the journey she found herself on, including discussing the financial implications of cancer, giving her top ‘this aint a pity party’ tips, and even starting the hashtag #GirlVsCancer for her to share images and thoughts in a positive and constructive way. Earlier this year Lauren also launched her own range of tit-tees with slogans including 'bangers, knockers, mammaries, fun bags, jubblies and lady lumps' to continue the conversation around breast cancer. Lauren’s writing and openness is infectious and she’s continuing to change the perception of being a young adult dealing with cancer, while keeping it sassy and humorous too. We discuss living with cancer, why sending a simple emoji can make someone’s day, how documenting her journey has helped her and what’s to come now she’s back to work.
