Book Club #117 - All That Matters - Richard talks to the winner of 6 Olympic gold medals (and one silver) Chris Hoy about his fabulous, moving and positive autobiography All That Matters. Although Chris says it's not Top Trumps his cancer makes Richard's look like a paper cut and the book is bold and matter of fact about the impact of a non-sugar coated stage 4 cancer diagnosis, but whilst acknowledging the spiral of grief that this inevitably caused, Chris discusses the catharsis of writing about it, applying sports psychology to the situation and seeing the positives of life rather than constantly worrying about death, which could come to any of us at any time. He talks about his own particular deeply unpleasant chemotherapy and the reasons he endured it and how he got through it, how comedy can help us through and how he hopes he might be around for a while yet. Plus how he coped with life after the Olympic victory and trying to avoid Alan Partridgisms. And how making the most of life isn't just about bucket lists, but realising what matters in your life and how lucky we are to be here. A remarkable Olympian and incredible man and yet a regular guy too. This week on the Spin Cycle podcast, Caley, Jonny, and Kit kick off with an update on Tom Pidcock's dramatic transfer saga. It turns out he's going nowhere. Or is he? This whole situation adds to the growing narrative that INEOS is a difficult team to be on, as evidenced by Ethan Hayter's recent comments about the "weird environment." Despite the failed transfer, it sounds like there are a few other teams still interested in acquiring Pidcock, but it'll probably take a hefty buyout to pry him away from INEOS at this point.Next up, the crew discuss Chris Froome's shocking admission that he won't be vying for another Tour de France victory. It's tough to see a legendary athlete come to terms with the limitations of their body, but we admire Froome's honesty and grace in addressing the situation. We also take some time to discuss the UCI's exploration of budget caps within the WorldTour. Chris Marshall Bell, who broke the story for Escape Collective, joins to talk about the potential implications of these financial regulations. While there's no consensus on the matter yet, it's clear that the UCI is serious about addressing the financial disparities within the sport. And finally, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the tough news regarding Chris Hoy's health. His strength and positivity in the face of such a challenging diagnosis are truly inspiring, and we wish him and his family all the best.

The two Hoys are unrelated.  According to the Salem Reporter, Julie Hoy raised nearly $300,000 - a record for a Salem mayoral race - mainly from businesses and real estate groups to help defeat the incumbent mayor who backed a payroll tax measure which voters overwhelmingly rejected last year. Salem Mayor-elect Julie Hoy joins us to talk about her vision for leading Oregon’s second-largest city and priorities when she takes office in January.

British track cyclist Milly Tanner has had a whirlwind last few years, and she's determined to leave her mark. The 24-year-old switched from swimming to cycling back in 2017 through UK Sport's talent transfer programme ‘Discover your Power' – a gruelling process in itself as you'll hear in this SportSpiel interview– but she hasn't looked back since. A bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships in the team sprint, a silver in the same event at the 2020 European Championships, as well as competing at the Commonwealth Games last year are just some of the highlights. But as is so often the case in the world of elite sport, it has been a rollercoaster at times. There's highs, there's lows and there are days where you really have to grind to get through. For those in British Cycling there is also the pressure of living up to some of the greats that have come before – think Jason and Laura Kenny, Chris Hoy and many, many more. But cycling still retains that community feel and when Milly faced her first big setback – not making the most recent team for the World Championships – it was another legend in Victoria Pendleton who provided the right advice at the right time. In this podcast Milly openly takes us through her journey into cycling, from battling back from setbacks, to initially feeling like she had to catch up after arriving in the sport relatively late. But she also takes us through some of the causes that are close to her heart, and helped lead to her joining the pioneering Unlocked programme run by the Women's Sport Trust. From period poverty to body image, these are just some of things Milly wants to use her voice to raise awareness of – and is part of the legacy she wants to leave from her time in elite sport. In a world that's so dominated by social media and comparisons, these are messages that need to be heard. Milly also takes us through the influence the military has in her life, including how important the impressions you leave on people are, as well as her aims in the future as she looks to fulfil her potential. Our Toby Davey court up with Aileen McGlynn who with her Pilot Hellen Scott won a Silver Cycling medal in the velodrome in Tokyo. Aileen began by telling Toby about getting on to a bicycle for the first time by borrowing her neighbour's child's bike, how at the age of 8 using her first Holy Communion money and savings to buy her own first proper bike, going on a 10-mile trip not long after buying that first bike to see one of her school friends and then joining a local cycling club.   For Aileen it was watching the 2002 Commonwealth Games and seeing Chris Hoy win his Gold medal for Scotland that really got Aileen interested in cycling as a sport. Aileen then talks about how she got in to Paralympic Cycling and breaking cycling records at her early Paralympic cycling team trials. The lead up to the Tokyo Paralympic Games with Aileen and her Pilot Helen Scott who only teamed up 12 weeks prior to flying out to Japan for the games. Aileen shares with Toby what it was like out there in Tokyo during the games for her and Helen and of course what it was like winning that silver medal. Aileen ends by passing on her advice to other visually impaired people about how to get into sport and her thoughts for the future on whether she will compete in Paris in 2024 for the next Paralympic Games. Congratulations again Aileen from everyone at the RNIB on that Paralympic Cycling Silver medal. (Image shows RNIB logo. In today's episode I catch up with Sir Chris Hoy, the Scottish track cyclist who has had a phenomenal career.  Chris is an eleven-times World Champion, and six-times Olympic Champion, and he has undoubtedly transformed the sport of cycling in the UK.   During our Monday Mile stroll, we talk perspective, and I learn about his passion for squatting, riding bikes, drinking coffee, and cooking up a feast on the BBQ for the family! We delve into his spectacular career, and now most importantly his work with Hoy Bikes and how he aims through this, to share his passion for two wheels with the next generation, whilst making Britain a more cycling-friendly nation.  Former Team GB double winter Olympian Aimee Fuller is on a mission to find the secrets for Monday motivation from some of the most successful sports men and women of our time and other well-known celebrities which will drop every week.  Aimee will be probing for answers from the full spectrum of routines; the early birds who have finely tuned Monday mornings, to the late risers who struggle to get up before 11am. How do elite athletes find the motivation to kick start their week come rain or shine? How do celebrities deliver no matter what the time of day? What knowledge can they pass on?'  Each episode will drop on a Monday morning and plays out in real time. Aimee will meet each of her guests for a walk and a chat and over the course of the mile she will find out how they cope on a Monday morning - their idiosyncrasies, breakfast routines, alarm noises - and how, when they need to, find the motivation to kick-on through the week.  Dropping every Monday as a bitesize 20/25 minute piece of content and weekly dose of motivation - right when you need it - sharing some of Britain's greatest athletes' secrets on self-motivation, candid thoughts on what they struggle with and a sideways look at some of their more unusual morning habits. Jo is the author of the Penny Dreadful series and the Rachel Riley books, and we discuss the importance of funny books for children, and her tips on how to write them. I think her partnership with Chris Hoy and the illustrator Clare Elsom in the Flying Fergus series is the model for celebrity publishing, so listen out. It can be done well!  We discuss the habit of writing, the accountability of Zoom writing sessions in lockdown – highly recommended, even now – and getting your book made into a BAFTA-winning TV show. Does it change your life? Am I talking to Jo as she lounges by her pool in the South of France? What are the average hourly earnings for writers, by the way?  When we spoke, Jo's latest adult novel, The Talk of Pram Town, was about to be launched. I absolutely loved this book. It's set between the 1980s of the royal wedding, and the late 1960s, telling the story of Jean, her runaway daugther Connie and her daughter Sadie. When Connie dies, Jean takes her granddaughter back to Harlow in Essex, where Connie grew up. I think of it as a story of Essex, sex and secrets. It's heartbreaking and funny and true. Jo's prose is brilliant and her dialogue is spot on. It didn't get the launch it deserved because of lockdown, so do look out for it. Links: Jo's website: https://joannanadin.com Bath Spa MA for writers for children and young adults: https://www.bathspa.ac.uk/courses/pg-writing-for-young-people/ Bristol University MA Creative Writing: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/2021/arts/ma-creative-writing/ Jo All Alone TV series: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8047424/ Lollies book awards (for laugh out loud books): https://shop.scholastic.co.uk/lollies. Be Amazing! I've known Josh for  a few years though social media and I've watched his journey over the years and I'm always amazed by his constant resiliency.  He has had many challenges along his journey but they never stop him, if anything he just gets back up stronger He started cycling because he was experiencing depression and was looking for something to turn his life around. In 2015 he found himself in a very dark space after splitting up with his long-term girlfriend, which led to him attempting suicide by intentionally crashing his car at high speed on the motorway near his home. After surviving this attempt, he knew he had to do something different and try to turn his life around. He attended a talk in Edinburgh where Sir Chris Hoy was speaking, and his story really inspired me. He made the decision that he would get into cycling and try and cycle around the world. This was how it began In April 2019, Josh set off from his home in Scotland to cycle around the world. Making good time and finding great adventures along the way, Josh was a mere 2000 miles away from completing his journey, when in December he was hit by a truck while cycling along Highway 36 near Temple in Texas, where he sustained life threatening injuries. However just nine months later, he has set a new record for the North Coast 500 – riding the 516-mile route in the Scottish Highlands in a little over 31 hours to beat the previous record by less than 5 minutes. His mission is to win the Tour De France in 2026. Remember where you heard it first! Some key points from our interview:How he managed to find the strength to keep going despite having suicidal thoughtsHow listening to a talk by Chris Hoy motivated him to cycle around the world despite being depressed, overweight and unfitHow cycling changed his  outlook in life and helped him to give up his unhealthy life choicesHow he's always been very honest and authentic with both his cycling and mental health journey on social media You can find more information about Josh here: https://www.joshquigley92.com*                                         *                                                  *                                                          *"Unbroken: Healing Through Storytelling" features  individuals who have all triumphed after adversity and have not just bounced back in life, but forward and are now making a difference for others.Hosted by Madeleine Black, the show will share stories of all the amazing people Madeleine has met on her own journey as an author/speaker and these stories will heal, motivate, inspire and bring hope when they share their wisdom and knowledge with her.She really believes in the power that comes when we share our stories, that in fact we are not story tellers but story healers. What happens when you fulfill a life-long dream at just 23? During the Rio Olympics, Owain Doull scooped a gold medal in the Men’s Team Pursuit. Then, suddenly, he was back road cycling, heavier than before and struggling to keep up during the Tour of Britain. This week, Philip Hindes and Callum Skinner talk about the highs and lows of elite cycling with Team Ineos’ (formerly Team Sky’s) Owain Doull.Doull then spills all about his team’s transition from Sky to Ineos, the grassroot impact Sky has had on British cycling and the uncertainty many athletes face when it comes to contracts. Interested in what an elite athlete eats? The Welsh champion reveals what he chows down in a day, why he quit alcohol and the benefits of low carb riding in the lead up to a race. Callum also reminisces about a favourite old haunt: Chicken King, and the fine balance between partying and training when living in the British Cycling flats. With the Yorkshire Road Championships fast approaching, talk moves on to protesting, hilarious pranks on Chris Lawless and being sent strange things in the mail...Plus, will virtual racing take off? Is Dowell taking on Tokyo and what does the future hold for Team Ineos? Join us for another lively episode of the best cycling podcast around (even if we do say so ourselves…), PodCrash.Show us the love by subscribing, rating and reviewing PodCrash.
