Tonight, we're stepping into a world where the darkest corners of human nature collide with forces we can't quite explain. This episode is all about true crime cases that twist into the supernatural—murders, trials, and hauntings where the line between evil deeds and otherworldly influence blurs. We're diving into four chilling tales: the infamous Amityville Horror, Arne Cheyenne Johnson's “Devil Made Me Do It” trial, the unsolved Villisca Axe Murders, and the Smurl family's demonic ordeal. These aren't just campfire stories—they're real cases that left investigators, families, and entire communities grappling with questions no one can fully answer. Picture this: a man guns down his family, and the house he leaves behind becomes a nightmare of voices and apparitions. A brutal stabbing leads to a courtroom defense of demonic possession. An axe-wielding killer vanishes, but the echoes of his victims linger in a cursed home. A family fights an unseen tormentor for 15 years, claiming it's hell-bent on their destruction. We've got the gritty details—court records, witness accounts, and expert takes from cops, paranormal investigators, and skeptics alike. Is this just human horror with a spooky twist, or could something truly sinister be at play? We'll see you on the inside.. ---- TIME STAMPS: 0:00 - Shadows of Evil: True Crime & The Supernatural 1:14 - Intro 2:33 - https://holler.baby/thefreakydeaky 4:03 - Dabbling Into True Crime 4:53 - My Son Looks Like Joe Rogan From The Back 5:25 - The Amityville Horror House 7:23 - ScareBNB (Don't Steal My Idea) 14:51 - Do You Believe The Amityville Horror Account? 15:53 - What Lingers After Tragedy? 18:46 - Arne Cheyenne Johnson: The Devil Made Me Do It Trial 24:46 - Was Arne Johnson Possessed? 25:24 - Schizophrenia & The Supernatural Is Episode 250 28:33 - Can You Sense Personality Shifts In People? 31:36 - The Villisca Axe Murders (Trigger Warning?) 31:53 - Hey YouTube, Fight Me. 34:23 - Christian Alienates The Female Audience 36:23 - This Show Is 83% Sarcasm (Study It) 39:53 - Zak Bagans Is a Plague 42:13 - Orbs Are Dust 99.9999999% Of the Time, Folks 43:23 - Who Goes To Off A Family With No Weapon.. 45:13 - Most Ghost Hunter Shows Are Cringy & Unbelievable 47:49 - The Smurl Family Haunting 48:33 - Scott Knows Music, Mmk? 50:13 - Impossible To Get Rid of The Warrens 53:59 - Smurl Case: Psychological Strain or Supernatural Experience? 54:13 - Why Video Evidence Is Untrustworthy These Days 57:23 - Notorious Haunted Houses Next Week 58:31 - Outro _____________________________________________ +PRODUCERS: Eric Long, Daniel Heng, Anthony M, +BECOME A PRODUCER: http://bit.ly/3WZ3xTg +BUY A $9 SHOUT-OUT: https://holler.baby/thefreakydeaky The Twilight Zone meets Mystery Science Theatre 3000 meets an uncomfortable Thanksgiving dinner conversation with your in-laws. A while back, I covered this case live—and it's one that's stuck with me ever since. In this episode, we're revisiting the infamous “Devil Made Me Do It” case, the chilling story that inspired The Conjuring 3. We'll walk through what reportedly happened to 11-year-old David Glatzel, the controversial involvement of Ed and Lorraine Warren, […]
This is the story of the ALLEGED possession of a young boy named David Glatzel and how that supposed "demon" was challenged by a man named Arne Cheyenne Johnson and how he subsequently m*rdered a man named Alan Bono and then said the famous line "The Devil Made Me Do It"This episode took me two years to complete. From the research, to the writing, to the interviews and new information falling in my lap throughout. I owe a lot of thanks to a lot of people throughout this journey. The list would be too long for the character allowance in this little box. So, just know, if you helped in any way, shape or form to complete this episode, I am eternally grateful! Even if it was as simple as just listening to me ramble every time I came across something new. Everyone behind the scenes helped so much! And thank you to @destinationspooky for some editing help! Thank you to Carl Glatzel for all his help as well! Please enjoy the video!Sources below:
This week on Horror Joy, Jeff and Brian wrestle with the dualities of fear in Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs and Osgood Perkins' Longlegs. They dissect the psychological and gender horrors lurking within The Silence of the Lambs, contrasting it with the mythological and satanic elements of Longlegs. They examine the tangled webs of desire, identity, and rationalization, revealing:· The transphobia in The Silence of the Lambs and how thoughts on gender have changed· The rich material world of Jonathan Demme's film· The failed mythology of Longlegs and The connection to the satanic panic in its Devil-Made-Me-Do-It tale· Whether Longlegs lives up to the comparisons to The Silence of the Lambs (it does not)So, grab your badge and join us as we follow the cryptic trail of evasive mass murderers. 'The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It' is the third film in the series, and is based on actual events. In 1980, an exorcism was performed on an 11-year-old boy from Brookfield, Connecticut. Assisting the ritual was 18-year-old Arne Johnson. Soon after the exorcism, Arne stabbed a man to death -- but he claimed that he was innocent because he was possessed by the devil at the time. Ben Cachiaras, the lead minister with Mountain Christian Church, and their 4 campuses located just outside of Baltimore, Maryland is our teacher, this month. Ben is unpacking the Bible's story of a man who God brought up from slavery to be second in command of all of Egypt, Joseph. The series is called: Have a Great Life! Seems like a million years ago, there was a popular phrase on TV, T-shirts, and so forth; The Devil Made Me Do It! Temptation is part of life; everyone has faced it. But the devil can't make us do anything. So, whether our temptation is anger, alcohol, drugs, sex, food, or work. Succumbing to any temptation; that's on us, and it lures us to sin and leaves us wounded. Not only does it dimmish our integrity, our joy, our relational connections, our purity, and but it breaks our connection with God. So, with some solid advice for having a great life by recognizing temptation, and successfully navigating through it, here's Ben. This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! In the early 1980s, a young boy in Connecticut was seemingly put under the spell or control of an unseen force shortly after moving into a new family home. A power is so strong that it took many months of blessings and exorcisms to try and rid the dark entity from the boy. During one of these exorcisms, feeling pity for the boy, Arnie Johnson stepped in and demanded the spirit take him rather than the boy. This would be the start of a second chapter to a story ending in murder, and one claiming the devil made him do it. A claim of demonic possessions, murder and the question, "Did the Devil make him do it?" Four decades ago, Arne Johnson went on trial for killing his landlord, Alan Bono, and his lawyer put forth the idea that Johnson was possessed at the time of the killing and therefore should be found innocent. “The Devil Made Me Do It” case is infamous and has been adapted numerous times in Hollywood, most recently in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in 2021 and more recently as the focus of the hit Netflix Documentary, The Devil on Trial. Dave is joined by researcher, Jeff Belanger to discuss the intricacies of this case and the aftermath on the killer, the family involved, the court systems and the reputations of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Devil Made Me Do It continues with what we've determined is a little seen movie that is the YOUNGEST of the movies covered this month: THE ORDER from Brian Helgeland, who wrote and directed this in 2003. This one reunites three actors from Helgeland's 2001 A Knight's Tale: Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, and Mark Addy. Joining that trio is Benno Fuhrmann and the legend Peter Weller. From IMDB: A young priest is sent to Rome to investigate the troubling death of the head of his order. For this week's episode I thought it would be a good idea to start getting in the Halloween mood. So like we did last year we are going to start telling stories based off of scary movies. Last year we covered 2 movies from one of my favorite franchises, The Conjuring Universe. So to kick off this season's celebration we are going to finally cover the true story behind The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It. So take a listen to the true events that inspired the latest movie in the franchise and enjoy!
1981, In 1981, Arne Cheyenne Johnson was tried for the murder of his landlord, Alan Bono, in what became known as the "Devil Made Me Do It" case, as Johnson's defense claimed that he was… Possessed by a demon Check out our socials for more updates!Twitter @MMMacabrePodInstagram: @mondaymorningmacabreFacebook @mondaymorningmacabreWebsite mondaymorningmacabre.comMusic by Kevin MacLeod ~ Moonlight Hall
In their ongoing series about characters we all assume we remember one way from the Bible that turn out to be VERY different (or even non-existent), pastors Sarah, Erica, and Steve take a look at a complex figure in the Old and New Testaments: the adversary figure sometimes called "Satan," "Lucifer," or "the devil." And in the course of the conversation we'll unpack how three different ideas and figures have kind of been melded together in pop religion, while the Scriptural picture is a little more complicated. We'll see how layers of ancient mythology, classic literature (like Milton's "Paradise Lost"), and modern pop culture (like Star Wars) has influenced a lot of our thinking about this figure, and how the Hebrew Scriptures especially conceive of this being as more like God's authorized agent to prosecute and test people, rather than a "dark side of the Force" who is opposite and equal to God. Join us for this deep dive to get a fuller understanding of this mysterious and complex figure here on this week's Crazy Faith Talk!
Today, in Part Two, Jeff Belanger discusses the events portrayed in The Conjuring 3; The Devil Made Me Do It. Be honest, when you've sinned in your life at some point you used the excuse "The Devil Made Me Do It" or at least thought about using it. At the end of the day we are the one's responsible for our own decisions, for our own sins. But perhaps Judas, the man who betrayed Jesus, maybe he can claim "The Devil Made Me Do It" and have it be true. The true story behind The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It, is that in February 1981, a young man by the name of Arne Cheyenne Johnson was arrested in Connecticut and charged with murder. Under ordinary circumstances, such a crime would have been given brief mention in the local press, and the matter would've quickly faded from public view. What the press did not know at the time, because the essential facts were still cloaked in secrecy, was that the murder represented the culmination of a horrendous religious case that had begun fully eight months before, in the town of Brookfield, Connecticut, our topic for this episode: The Possession of David Glatzel. Content Warning: demonic possession, sexual assault, murder This week the blhost sisters have much to celebrate - recording their 10th episode, Greer has a new mic, AND Spooky Szn is officially upon us! To commemorate such an exciting time, the ladies are going to do a deep dive into cases investigated by the two most notorious and esteemed demonologists of their time: Ed and Lorraine Warren. However, since the nature of these investigations can be extremely dark and disturbing, they wanted to start the episode off on a lighter note by reading a story submitted by listener Mara about her encounter with a potato throwing ghost! Then sh*t gets real when Greer discusses the Warrens' investigation of the Smurl family followed by Betsy's retelling of the demonic possessions of David Glatzel and Arne Johnson that resulted in the murder of Alan Bono and the "Devil Made Me Do It" case. The first unlawful murder in Brookfield, Connecticut brought more than a history-making moment to this quiet and quaint New England hamlet. Ed & Lorraine Warren made a life out of investigating the paranormal and helping people escape from the dark. Part of that process sometimes involved removing haunted objects from people's homes and keeping them safe in what would become known as the Warrens Occult Museum. For the first time in history, a professional paranormal investigation was conducted by the New England Society for Psychic Research in the museum, today we discuss their findings and the spirits that came through with Eric Vitale. PART 2 - AVAILABLE TO GRAVE KEEPERS ONLY - LISTEN HERE In part two of our interview, available only to Grave Keepers, we discuss: What prevents Annabelle from teleporting out of its case today? What happened with Ed & Lorraine's pets the night of their investigation? What is the story behind “The Devil Made Me Do It”? Are there any objects in Ed & Lorraine Warrens's occult museum scarier than Annabelle?
E20: The Snedeker family moved into a former funeral home and allegedly experienced a horrific haunting. According to the Warrens, this haunting was due to a terrible incident that took place in the past and demons were at play. This story inspired the writing of the book “In a Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting” by Ray Garton and eventually inspired the movie “The Haunting in Connecticut”. However, Garton came forward with a startling confession about the truth behind this story, and an alleged darker side of the Warrens was exposed. As a bonus, Ivy also goes over “The Devil Made Me Do It” case which involved a murderer, Arne “Cheyenne” Johnson, who's plea was that they were possessed by a demon when committing the crime, with the Warrens giving him their support. This story has many parallels with the story of the Snedeker family, and inspired the movie “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” that came out in 2021. These two cases, in the opinions of this podcasts hosts, help to showcase a known pattern and cycle used by the Warrens. Buckle up for this wild ride, and stay with us on our Ghouls Trip journey into the stories made famous by the Warrens! www.instagram.com/ghoulstrippodcast http://twitter.com/ghoulstrippod https://www.facebook.com/GhoulsTripPodcast/ Contact us at ghoulstrippodcast@gmail.com (We would love to hear your own personal paranormal encounters, episode suggestions, or thoughts you have on a topic we have covered!) On week 3 of True Crime New England's spooky October episodes, Liz and Katie talk about a case that has remained in the public eye for 30 years- "The Devil Made Me Do It"! When 11-year-old David Glatzel begins to show signs of being possessed (seeing a demon-like figure, kicking and biting, and having convulsions) his older sister Debbie, her boyfriend Arne Johnson, and the whole family are worried. The Glatzel's call in the help of famed demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, who come rushing to the family's Connecticut home. Arne Johnson hates to see his girlfriend's little brother in so much pain, so he challenges the demons to take him instead...big mistake. Less than a year later, Arne finds himself in a heated argument with Debbie's boss, Alan Bono, which ends with Alan dead from several tremendous stab wounds. Arne's defense? He was possessed. Don't you hate it when you're just trying to clean up your parents' yard and an evil Mr. Tumnus comes up from the old well and threatens to steal your soul? This week, Hannah tells Katy about the infamous "Devil Made Me Do It" case, in which Arne Johnson murdered his landlord (who was possibly being a belligerent drunk at the time) while allegedly possessed by a demon who may or may not have looked like Narnia'a Mr. Tumnus, but evil. The girls talk exorcisms, water beds, babies, and more! And, how much wine is too much for a Monday afternoon work lunch? This one is fun and full of surprises!
