The Incredible World of DiC meets the Wonderful World of Disney On this episode of Synergy Loves Company, Eric explores the surprising connections between DIC Entertainment and Disney, focusing on how beloved cartoons like Inspector Gadget ended up as Disney properties. The episode covers DIC's origins in France, the company's partnerships with prominent animation studios, and its expansion into the American TV market with hits like Heathcliff, The Real Ghostbusters, and Inspector Gadget. Eric discusses how DIC adapted comic strips, toys, live-action properties, and video games into cartoons, as well as their move into theatrical films and their collaborative relationship with ABC. Learn how Disney's acquisition of ABC Capital Cities brought DIC under the Disney umbrella, leading to projects like the Inspector Gadget live-action film starring Matthew Broderick, Meet the Deedles, and Genius, as well as animated series like Madeline and Sabrina: The Animated Series. The episode also covers DIC's eventual sale and ties to Saban Entertainment, setting the stage for future Disney connections. If you're interested in the history of Saturday morning cartoons, TV animation business deals, and unexpected Disney collaborations, this episode covers it all. A flashback to the "wilderness years" between the end of Extreme Ghostbusters and the "Answer the Call" reboot - 2012 marked the year host of the prolific and informative pop culture podcast "The Chronic Rift" John S. Drew talked to Jay and "Mr. Sci-Fi" Marc Scott Zicree (author of some of the best episodes of The Real Ghostbusters) about the legacy of the franchise and why the animated series was so important to the enduring appeal of the original concept developed by Ivan Reitman, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis.  Zicree talks about the process of writing stories for The Real Ghostbusters back in the 1990s as one of the key writers under J. Michael Straczynski while Jay manages to hold back most of his fanboy glee talking about what the series meant to him growing up. Fortunately, no hosts or screenwriters were roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day. Thanks to John Drew for allowing RFG to use this interesting conversation.  Content of the original episode was altered slightly from the original release. His family moved to Timmins, Ontario, soon after he was born. LaMarche's childhood was filled with his "own little world of cartoons and sixties television". It was in his second year of high school that he learned of the popularity his talent for mimicry could garner him. This realization came from a coincidental performance in a high school "variety night" when a couple of friends urged him to enter. The act he performed at the variety night was "celebrities as waiters" which he used until the end of his stand-up career. It took a few years after his 1981 move to Los Angeles for LaMarche to establish himself in the American voiceover industry, which he initially pursued as a side endeavor during his full-time standup comedy career. LaMarche began on Inspector Gadget with that show's second season in 1985, and went on to Dennis the Menace, Popeye and Son and The Real Ghostbusters where he played Egon Spengler. After The Real Ghostbusters, LaMarche became a regular mainstay of the voiceover industry, appearing in such shows as Tiny Toon Adventures, GI Joe, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: The Animated Series, Taz-Mania, Where's Waldo, The Little Mermaid, Batman: The Animated Series, and Bonkers before landing perhaps his most recognized role in 1993 as The Brain on Animaniacs and later its spin-off show Pinky and the Brain. Following this, LaMarche worked on The Critic, Freakazoid!, and The Tick before then reprising his role of Egon in Extreme Ghostbusters. The stretch of two years after this saw LaMarche portray characters in such shows as Hey Arnold! as Big Bob Pataki, Queer Duck, and The Chimp Channel. During this time LaMarche would become the voice actor for Mortimer Mouse whom he would voice in the television series Mickey Mouse Works and Disney's House of Mouse. It was at this time, 1999, that LaMarche began work on Futurama, and since Futurama, he has continued to work steadily in television, including guest roles on The Simpsons (where he once again parodied Orson Welles). His most recent regular role came as Hovis the butler on the Nickelodeon series Catscratch. LaMarche was the voice of antagonist Father in Codename: Kids Next Door and was also the voice of Victor in Playhouse Disney's Handy Manny 2007 Halloween episode. LaMarche has done various voice work for many Warner Bros. Animation and DiC Entertainment cartoons. He also delivered the protracted belches for the "Great Wakkorotti" shorts on Animaniacs, in which Wakko Warner performed various pieces of music. In 2011, LaMarche reprised his role as Yosemite Sam in Cartoon Network's new series, The Looney Tunes Show, and its spin-off, New Looney Tunes. Find out more at https://still-toking-with.pinecast.co

Adam and Doug go into the magic that is The Real Ghostbusters--the OG animated series--before segueing into Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters and all of the trivia in between. We talk about the other DIC Entertainment properties from Inspector Gadget, Hello Kitty, Sonic, Super Mario, and like 15 others. Oh, and because it is obligatory any time anyone mentions this franchise, we talk about how integral J. Michael Straczynski was to the show. Ade gushes on the awesomeness that is Extreme Ghostbusters. Made by Adelaide Productions, the same studio that brought you Jumanji, Men in Black, and Godzilla. Did you know that there was a bizarre light gun game released for this show on PS1 after the PS2 had been out for four years??? AND SEVEN YEARS AFTER THIS SHOW WAS CANCELED!!! Finally, Jake ends the party with his extensive knowledge on all things comic book related, ranging from Marvel UK, to Now Comics, 88mph, and IDW. He even delves into promotional giveaway comics packed in with British toffee candy things, called Trio. His discussion includes noteworthy creators like Dan Abnet and Andy Lanning, and spans to pretty covers and variations between multiple titles. What issue has a Fantastic Four reference? We talk the art style on every crossover, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Files, and Mars Attacks, and why Dan Schoening's art is second to none! Which crossover does writer, Erik Burnham, want to do next with the comics? Just press play already and find out. We finally open up about our own writing in the superhero genre, and talk at length about why we’re branching out to touch upon other sub-genres. Pop-Culture Trivia-July 1971 Swamp ThingA humanoid/plant elemental creature, created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson, the Swamp Thing has had several humanoid or monster incarnations in various different storylines. The character first appeared in House of Secrets #92 (July 1971) in a stand-alone horror story set in the early 20th century. The Swamp Thing television series first aired on the USA Network from 1990 to 1993, with Dick Durock reprising the role of Swamp Thing from the movie adaptation. DiC Entertainment's Swamp Thing animated series debuted on Fox Kids in April 1991, with Len Carlson providing the voice of the title character. A live-action series based on the Swamp Thing and produced by James Wan was released in 2019 on the DC Universe streaming service, with Alec Holland portrayed by Andy Bean while Swamp Thing is played by Derek Mears in a "physical costume."GEEK OUTSTrish - The Last Kingdom on Netflix. It’s a blatant soap opera, but it include Vikings, so who really cares?Jeremy - Some wonderfully bad horror movies (warning, I spoil pretty much everything.) What happens when you take AirBnB, annoying people, and a crazy dude with a hammer? Deep Dive - What’s New in Our Superhero Worlds?Trish - I’m pivoting my Superhero universe to start focusing on more romantic novels. For TL Heinrich, it will be superhero first with slow burn romances and read quite a lot like Paranormal and Urban Fantasy with romantic elements more front and center. For Trish Heinrich, it’s Romance first, superheroes second with a good dose of steam.Jeremy - The second series is with the editor and I'm looking at a busy fall. After my pilot series focusing on action adventure, the prequel is much more of an alternate history / urban fantasy vibe. While that's with the editor I'm working on a much thicker science fiction novel that takes place centuries in the future. My current strategy is to maintain a superhero focus while touching on other genres to expand readership. The Classic Film: House II: The Second Story (1987) "The new owner of a sinister house gets involved with reanimated corpses and demons searching for an ancient Aztec skull with magic powers” (IMDb.com). The first House movie was an unexpected treat for us, but it seems like The Second Story, with its nonsense “and then” plot and shallow child-pandering, has no idea what made the original actually good. The Modern Film: The Conjuring 2 (2016) "Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising 4 children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit” (IMDb.com). Barbara Millicent Roberts has been a lot of different things in her lifetime; teen model, doctor, game developer... but what she's always been more than any other thing is a tool; a massive hammer for Mattel to swing at anyone who tries to get in on their carefully-cultivated patch of the girls' toys market. And so in 1986 when Hasbro attempted to get into the fashion doll biz with 'Jem and the Holograms' Barbie was given an outfit, some new friends, a microphone stand, and a two-part DiC Entertainment produced VHS cartoon with which to crush the usurper.

We'll be honest here, we done goofed up again. We originally thought that The Power Team was created by DiC Entertainment, which seemed reasonable considering neither of us thought they'd really bow to the rules of loyalty and would go wherever money called. Unfortunately, in doing this we were placing our faith entirely in the Wikipedia article for it, which lists DHX Media as the distributor and has the "Television shows by DIC Entertainment" category attached to it. This same article also happens to have a "several citations needed" box at the top of the page, which has been present since 2008. I mean we're not going to back down from doing it now that we've said we're gonna do it but, we're definitely gonna make sure that what we plan to watch in the future is actually Dic beforehand*.Now, The Power Team is actually a cartoon segment within a larger show, entitled Video Power. Video Power is a largely throwaway encasing for the cartoon, in which the hyperactive sentient 90s haircut Johnny Power gives the viewers "reviews" and "hints" to various NES games. I say that but watch any episode of the show and you'll find out that the reviews are actually more along the lines of endorsements and the hints are massively inaccurate and technically another endorsement for a magazine. As for the cartoon itself, well...it's alright? It's a fairly harmless cartoon antics team based show, in the vein of but certainly not the same as Captain N (despite what people say). As an added bonus we also mention the completely different second season of Video Power, wherein the cartoon is discarded and the entire thing is converted into an awkward game show.

For years, John Kricfalusi fought the “factory system” in animation. From his time at Filmation Associates and DiC Entertainment to his work on the revolutionary Mighty Mouse remake and the creation of his own hit show Ren and Stimpy for Nickelodeon, John K has looked for a way to make beautiful and original cartoons for studios that want to churn out animation quickly and cheaply. Thanks to the Internet, John K is now being given a chance to make cartoons the way he’s always wanted to make them. He has set up a fundraising drive on Kickstarter to raise money for “Cans Without Labels,” an animated short featuring George Liquor, Ren and Stimpy’s outspoken Republican owner. The Kickstarter campaign allows him to bring the cartoons he loves making directly to the fans, without all of those pesky middle men. With only days left to go in the campaign, we sat down to talk to John K about this exciting new territory for cartoons and the struggles with the factory system that led him to this project.
