Greeny is hoping that Rich Cimini also got hacked after the news he reported about Aaron Rodgers missing minicamp. We reminisce on The Sopranos finale 17 years later...and Hembo reveals that he despises the show, which garners derision from the crew and our audience. We play an MLB-themed Sneaky Hembo Trivia and continue to discuss seminal moments in pop culture history. The show wraps up with Greeny and Hembo debating how good the Lakers coaching job still is.
Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Hello, at 2:09 in the morning on October 5th, 1930, the British airship R-101 crashed some 90 miles northwest of Paris. It was just a few hours into a journey that was supposed to take it to Karachi, then a premier city of the British Empire of India. Impacting the ground at approximately 13 mph, the 5.5 million cubic feet of hydrogen gas that gave the airship its buoyancy immediately caught fire. Forty-eight of the fifty-four on board died, including Lord Christopher Birdwood Thomson, a Labour peer, and the Secretary of State for Air, who had staked his policy program on R101's successful voyage. It was a greater loss of life than that suffered in the more notorious Hindenburg crash of 1937–but, incredibly enough, it was not the greatest number of lives to be claimed by an airship accident. And on that record of death and destruction–and why it was tolerated for so long–hangs a tangled story. The story of how R101 came to its rapid end is told by S.C. Gwynne in his new book His Majesty's Airship: The Life and Tragic Death of the World's Largest Flying Machine. S.C. Gwynne has written numerous books, including the New York Times bestsellers Rebel Yell and Empire of the Summer Moon. For Further Investigation Some of themes in the conversation were touched in earlier conversations: one with Tom Misa, on the history of technology, and the other with Iwan Rhys Morus on how Victorians conceived of the future. Harold G. Dick and Douglas H. Robinson, The Golden Age of the Great Passenger Airships: Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg E. A. El 6 de mayo de 1937 el dirigible alemán Hindenburg se destruyó a causa de un incendio cuando aterrizaba en Nueva Jersey. El accidente provocó la muerte de 36 personas.
This episode is somehow simultaneously a warm bowl of soup and an absolute roller coaster ride - that's just the combination you get when you put us together to talk about Studio Ghibli movies. We return to the promised land that Hayao Miyazaki built in a cave with a box of scraps, by diving into the oft-overlooked film The Cat Returns, the classic growing pains of Kiki's Delivery Service, and the environmentalist juggernaut that is Princess Mononoke. Give Trevor the demon powers, cause he's gonna go kill a capitalist. (For legal reasons, this is a joke.) Truly, truly, there are too many references to list in this description, so for just a small treat: join us for TikTok name drops, the rise of the Cypher Chief, William Robert Thornton, and the newly discovered Jay Baruchel/Jennifer Coolidge phenomenon.

What is Steam Punk? Steampunk is a genre of science fiction where the world never really progressed past steam technology. It focuses on the hand crafted or man-made, instead of more industrial practices. Co-owners of Dirigible Brewing Co. Colin Knirk and Chris Loring have created a Brewery/Tap Room located in Littleton Ma that features beer and hard seltzer, but also non-alcoholic offerings such as craft sodas, coffee, and flavored seltzers. One of our favorite part of this brewery is the taproom which features a ton of Steampunk Elements and not to mention a wide variety of tabletop and strategy games. We hope you enjoy this weeks episode!Cheers Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Hey guys, mommy's home from vacation and she brought everyone souvenirs! Also one giant dead rat, but that's fine! No problems here! The girls have a cathartic vent session about the rumored return of Grima Wormtongue before moving onto the events of the week. We get into it about Brandon and Nak standing up to bullies (derogatory) in defense of their bullies (complimentary). We also deep discuss the developments in the Pillars storyline, and the most important question that has ever been asked: Max, are you happy? Plus is Orange Cassidy good at wrestling? We say...yeah :)
Imagine this: It's 1936 and you're taking a luxurious three day flight from Germany to the United States in the Hindenburg. But instead of landing in New Jersey as expected, you dock to the top of the tallest building in the world: the Empire State Building. This didn't actual happen — turns out that's a logistical and safety impossibility — but that didn't stop the builders of the Empire State Building from using the potential of a mooring mast to advertise the building. After all, they had to really stick it to the Chrysler Building. Matt and Emily are joined by the Museum's lighter-than-air flight curator to talk about airships, Zeppelins, mooring masts, and, a first for us, architecture! In one of the stranger stories ever to break during the program, the Pentagon identifies a Chinese spy blimp in United States airspace and reportedly overrules President Biden's decision to shoot it down. But Dan has his doubts on that narrative, as the Air Force had two F-22 Raptor jets at the ready for such a task.
I read from dirigible to dirty. The "dirigible" as in "the flying balloon" is short for "dirigible balloon" which is really just "a balloon that can be steered". https://www.etymonline.com/word/dirigible#etymonline_v_8617 The "define earth" clip is from the film WALL-E https://youtu.be/59M-t6Js6Q8 The "dirty trumpet" clip is from Wynton Marsalis. https://youtu.be/DJi8fN6hBmc The word of the episode is "dirt poor". I read from directorial to dirigible. The word "dirge", in our current usage, basically just comes from the first word of a psalm that I think was said/sung at funerals. https://www.etymonline.com/word/dirge#etymonline_v_8616 The audio is from possibly the most famous dirge/funeral song which is Chopin's "Funeral March". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D05AB8xs7qA The word of the episode is "director's cut". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Director%27s_cut Theme music from Tom Maslowski https://zestysol.com/ Merchandising! https://www.teepublic.com/user/spejampar "The Dictionary - Letter A" on YouTube "The Dictionary - Letter B" on YouTube "The Dictionary - Letter C" on YouTube "The Dictionary - Letter D" on YouTube Featured in a Top 10 Dictionary Podcasts list! https://blog.feedspot.com/dictionary_podcasts/ Backwards Talking on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmIujMwEDbgZUexyR90jaTEEVmAYcCzuq dictionarypod@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/thedictionarypod/ https://twitter.com/dictionarypod https://www.instagram.com/dictionarypod/ https://www.patreon.com/spejampar https://www.tiktok.com/@spejampar 917-727-5757

You fools! You've unearthed the most dreaded curse of all! A sequel. Join us as we rewind back to 2001 for this follow up to an all-time classic. Is it good? Well, it's definitely better than 2017's The Mummy starring Thomas Cruise. Come back and hang with all your favorite characters that aren't super dead (mummies and reincarnates not included). Our lovable rogue Rick, our underused badass heroine Evie, Ardeth Bay - Keeper of the Exposition, and oh that's right we almost forgot Jonathan (so did the movie). Will they defeat the easily revived Imhotep? How much of their own franchise will they rip off? It's Grey Hawk Down and Raptors vs Redshirts. Don't get that reference? You will soon.
