"Now, what I want is Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life."Charles Dickens' novel - subtitled 'For These Times' - is a vivid story for our own age - a short, sharp satire of target-driven education, business, and the denial of the imagination. Headmaster Thomas Gradgrind has developed a rigid, facts-driven curriculum for his school. And at home, he raises his two children, Tom and Louisa, within a similar system of utilitarian metrics. But the human spirit has an inherent thirst for wonder and Louisa struggles inside the constraints of her education.Dramatised by Graham WhiteThomas Gradgrind…..David MorrisseyLouisa Gradgrind…..Rachel HarperTom Gradgrind…..Ike BennettJosiah Bounderby…..Shaun DooleySissy Jupe…..Janey OrchardMrs Sparsit…..Jan RavensJames Harthouse…..Will CloseStephen Blackpool…..Arthur HughesRachael…..Claire CageMrs Gradgrind/Margaret/Josephine…..Julie BarclayMr M'Choakumchild/Slackbridge/Collins…..Richard ElfynBitzer…..Aaron AnthonySleary…..Patrick RobinsonProduction co-ordinators Lindsay Rees and Eleri Sydney McAuliffeSound by Rhys Morris, Nigel Lewis and Catherine RobinsonDirected by Emma Harding, BBC Audio Wales
"Shall We Join the Ladies?" is a short play written by J.M. Barrie, a Scottish author best known for creating Peter Pan. This play is part of his collection titled "Half Hours," which includes several one-act plays. The plot of "Shall We Join the Ladies?" revolves around the comedic misunderstandings and social intricacies of a group of characters attending a ball. The story explores themes of romance, social conventions, and the complexities of relationships. The title suggests a humorous and lighthearted tone, typical of Barrie's works.Without specific details or a more detailed synopsis, it's challenging to provide a more in-depth overview of the play. If you're interested in exploring the nuances of social comedy and Barrie's wit, reading the play itself would be the best way to fully grasp the storyline and appreciate the humor woven into the narrative.Narrator: Anna Simon: Lady Jane: Carol Box :Sir Joseph: Andy Minter Lady Wrathie: ashleighjane Captain Jennings: Algy Pug Miss Isit: Lucy Perry Host: Phil Benson Mrs. Preen: Julia Niedermaier Mr. Preen: Viktor Horvath Mrs. Bland: Ruth Golding Maid: Rapunzelina Mr. Gourlay: Piotr Nater Miss Vaile: Diána Majlinger Mr. Vaile: Alan Weyman Mrs. Castro: Charlotte Duckett

Today I am featuring a dramatic play about love!www.taletellerclub.com for all the episodes and 100s of amazing stories.Love's Labour's Lost by William ShakespeareLibriVox recording of Love's Labour's Lost (version 2) by William Shakespeare.Read in EnglishTemptations and infatuations abound in this sparklingly linguistic early comedy from Shakespeare, where cerebral pursuits and ascetic intentions prove no match for the nobles of Navarre's royal court when the Princess of France and her attendants arrive on a political mission and find themselves enmeshed in a mission of far more amorous ambitions. An entertaining battle of sexes, wits and classes ensues as the great master of the English language concocts a roundelay of semantic gamesmanship, mixing high lyricism, bawdy wordplay and a fair degree of scholarly satire together with elastic dexterity to poke fun at masculine romantic ideations and female objectification, the ambiguities of communication, as well as the ignorance of the seemingly cultured societal sets. And then, in a stunning tonal turn mere moments before the play's conclusion that manages to thwart all our expectations, the young Shakespeare grounds this heretofore exuberant work in a startlingly mature realism that is far removed from his most popular comedies, lending Love's Labour's Lost both a worldliness and honesty that marks it as a work of astonishing complexity.StarringAnd to perform it all? Three men (Craig Franklin, Tomas Peter, and Brad “Hamlet” Filippone) and three women (Sonia, Jenn Broda, and Kelly S. Taylor), determined to give you a performance of Shakespeare's work that you will never forget. You thought you knew your Shakespeare? Well, think again! - Summary by Tomas PeterCast list:Craig Franklin: Narrator; Costard; Dumain; Maria & Marcade.Brad “Hamlet” Filippone: Biron; Holofernes & French Lord.Jenn Broda: The Princess of France; Dull & Ver (the Spring).Kelly S. Taylor: Ferdinand, King of Navarre; Katharine; Jaquenetta & Forester.Sonia: Rosaline; Moth; Longaville & Hiems (the Winter).Tomas Peter: Don Adriano de Armado; Boyet & Sir Nathaniel.

The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. The superstate and its residents are dictated to by a political regime euphemistically named English Socialism, shortened to "Ingsoc" in Newspeak, the government's invented language. The superstate is under the control of the privileged elite of the Inner Party, a party and government that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as "thoughtcrime", which is enforced by the "Thought Police". "You will not replace us" was the battle cry of white supremacists at a rally in Charlottesville in 2017. They were expressing an old fear - the idea that immigrants and people of colour will out-breed and replace the dominant white 'race'. Exactly the same idea suffused American culture in the first decades of the 1900s, as millions of immigrants arrived at Ellis island from southern and eastern Europe. The 'old-stock' Americans - the white elite who ruled industry and government - latched on to replacement theory and the eugenic idea of 'race suicide'. It's all there in The Great Gatsby - F.Scott Fitzgerald's novel set in 1922 - which takes us into the world of the super-rich - their parties and their politics. Amidst this febrile period of cultural and economic transformation, the Eugenics Record Office is established. Led by Charles Davenport and Harry Laughlin, it becomes a headquarters for the scientific and political advancement of eugenics. By 1924, the eugenically informed anti-immigrant movement has triumphed - America shut its doors with the Johnson-Reed Act, and the flow of immigrants is almost completely stoppped. Steve Phillips and Matthew Layton present #AudioBookClub - the world's only interactive audiobook review and recommendation podcast. On this very special episode of #AudioBookClub, Steve and Matthew speak to the man they're not afraid to call 'The Greatest Audiobook Producer In The World" His name is Dirk Maggs and he's the man fully responsible for the conversion of Neil Gaiman's 'The Sandman' from the original graphic novels into the genre-redefining audiobook series we know and love. Dirk was incredibly generous with his time and gave us insights into all the stages of the production process: writing; casting; 'pushing actors about in a studio' and (Steve's favourite part) making the squishy sound effects. Please show your appreciation for Dirk's genius in the comments below. -- “The Sandman: Act 2” - based on the DC Comics series written by Neil Gaiman.
