In 1979 Peter Sellers released Sellers Market, an LP of all new material which was recorded mostly in Paris and included contributions from the likes of Alan Clare, June Whitfield and Irene Handl. While it failed to reach the heights of his previous hit records The Best of Sellers and Songs For Swinging Sellers, Sellers Market does contain some good stuff – notably The Whispering Giant (featuring Irene Handl on top form) and The Eaton Square Blues. Perhaps most intriguingly is what wasn't included on the album – a couple of tracks Sellers recorded as Fred Kite up against June Whitfield's Margaret Thatcher. Fearing her displeasure, Sellers nixed these tracks as he hoped the real Mrs T might confer upon him a knighthood. As it was, he was dead less than a year later. Joining Tyler to talk about the making of the LP and what works and doesn't work is returning guest and Sellers expert Mark Cousins, who thinks it could have been a much better album had more time and effort been devoted by all involved; as it was it was a bit of a rush job and comes across a bit baggy and unfocused.

STEVE HATCHER returns to some of those lesser-known sitcoms. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on October 6th 2024. Earlier in the year, STEVE HATCHER started taking us on a guided tour of some of the more forgotten TV sitcoms from the 1960s, and we thought it was about time that we went back and picked up where we left off in taking a look at the not insubstantial list of ancient television rib-ticklers that he's been studiously working his way through. So, over the course of the next hour, we'll touch briefly upon the ATV HANCOCK series that's apparently finally been given an airing on REWIND TV, before investigating STEVE'S list and talking about CITIZEN JAMES, the BBC series written for SID JAMES after the acrimonious split with HANCOCK; BEGGAR MY NEIGHBOUR, a mid-sixties class and workplace comedy initially starring PETER JONES, with JUNE WHITFIELD, REG VARNEY, and PAT COOMBS; SAM AND JANET a “married with children” set up which featured JOHN JUNKIN and VIVIENNE MARTIN; NOT IN FRONT OF THE CHILDREN, a terribly middle-class hit that launched WENDY CRAIG into playing similar roles for the next couple of decades; and MISTER DIGBY DARLING which again featured PETER JONES in a workplace sitcom alongside SHIELA HANCOCK (No relation). We also have a bit of a natter about a few other things that the topic of the sitcom happens to prompt, whilst I wonder about the fact that several of these scenarios seemed to turn up time and again with slight twists on the recognised formula. Incidentally, if afterwards you want to seek out our earlier discussion on almost forgotten sixties sitcoms, you can find that in the 188th episode of VISION ON SOUND if you are looking for it, which, like all of our previous episodes, can be found on spotify by typing VISION ON SOUND into the podcast search box. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

The Absolutely Fabulous classic episode 'Poor' (s02e05) gets put under the microscope by Jeffers & Steve, who are impressed by AbFab's amazing cast, but will it win them around to the series as a whole? The show has a top-shelf group of regulars including Joanna Lumley, Jennifer Saunders, Julia Sawahla and the great June Whitfield, so what's not to like?
In this episode we look at the brilliant fifth radio series episode The Unexploded Bomb. Tim, James, Jon and Martin consider how brilliant Kenneth Williams is in this episode with his two contrasting voices of the vicar and the bomb disposal expert and also look at the excellent contribution from Hattie Jacques. The Gang of Four discuss the great characters played by Alan Simpson, the edits made to the earlier vinyl and cassette release and their views on the final scene. The four also discuss pyjama parties and how many they have been invited to and debate, in detail, how to cook a five course meal with just one saucepan. As always, the team get side tracked, this time by the Fawlty Towers vinyl box set, comedy records by Bernard Cribbins, Terry Scott, June Whitfield and Frankie Howerd and conclude with a look at the Hancock connection with The Wombles!Don't forget to rate and subscribe to the podcast. And, if you haven't done so already, why not join the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society - full details of how to join are at www. tonyhancock.org.uk We have an event planned to celebrate what would have Hancock's 100th birthday in May 2024 and our annual reunion dinner in September; we'd love to welcome you as a member and see you at our events. We'll be back in a couple of weeks with a review of The New Nose from the fourth television series. Hope to see you then.
In this edition of Very Nearly an Armful, James. Jon, Tim and Martin look at the earliest surviving television episode of Hancock's Half Hour, The Alpine Holiday, from Series 2. The team look at the amazing supporting cast, including Richard Wattis in his only Hancock's Half Hour role, John Vere, June Whitfield and, or course, Kenneth Williams in his only surviving televised appearance as Snide. They also consider how different this episode is without Sid James. The four examine the technicalities of how the show was recorded, consider how easily Hancock switches from pomposity to sheer panic in a matter of seconds and debate, in detail, which of the gang is most suited to enter the yodelling championship of East Dulwich. The team, of course, gets distracted, this time by the recent Punch and Judy Festival in Bournemouth and by the guest appearance of Diane Morgan at the Society's annual dinner.Don't forget to rate and subscribe to the podcast. Joining Tyler this week is Jon Auty from Behind the Stunts to talk about a 1971 British comedy film featuring some of the biggest names in comedy and light entertainment at the time. The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins was conceived, directed and produced by Graham Stark and he managed to bring together the likes of Bruce Forsyth, Harry H Corbett, Leslie Phillips, Alfie Bass, June Whitfield, Ronnie Barker and others to appear in a series of interlinked sketches illustrating the titular sins. Notably, it also featured two Goons - Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe - the former writing and appearing in a standout sequence called 'Sloth' while his erstwhile colleague adopts a series of desperate disguises to hoodwink Geoffrey Bayldon in 'Envy'. Things discussed include: On The Buses, recasting with Terry Scott, Paul Hardcastle's The Wizard, walnuts, Keith Flint from The Prodigy, 'Boob Coverage', Bert Kwouk's stunt double, the extremely talented Madeline Smith, the mystery of DB Cooper and much much more! The co-creator and star of hit Radio 4 comedy series Ed Reardon's Week - Christopher Douglas - is this week's special guest! Christopher talks about radio comedy and its impact and influence on postwar Britain and his own involvement in the medium. Apart from the Goons we talked about Muir & Norden's writing partnership, June Whitfield working with Peter Sellers, Stars In Battledress, Tony Hancock, the importance of spot FX in radio comedy and the infamous (and highly proscriptive!) BBC Green Book. As well as playing Ed Reardon and the hapless cricketer Dave Podmore, Christopher has been involved in radio series such as Beauty of Britain, Mastering The Universe and the recent Tinniswood Award-winning adaptation of Tristram Shandy. If you include the bonus shows this is Goon Pod's 50th episode folks, with plenty more fun to come, and my thanks to Christopher and everyone else who has contributed to the podcast's success since it launched in May 2021 – here's to loads more!
Robert Gillespie starred in sitcom after sitcom in the 70s and 80s - and beyond. He's one of our most prolific comedy actors. He's worked with everyone - from Ronnie Barker and Leonard Rossiter to Tony Britton, Yootha Joyce and June Whitfield. And he has a story to tell about almost all of them. Robert was in Rising Damp, Porridge, Dad's Army, Robin's Nest and George and Mildred to name but a few. He also played the lead in the Thames TV hit Keep it in the Family which was never out of the top 5 in the tv ratings. He's just written a new book charting his long career and in this interview with Ashley he gives us a taster. In a feature length interview, Ashley explores Robert's career over 7 decades. Chris Emmett is a Legend in the World of Stage, Radio & TV Comedy. A successful writer for TV Shows, Radio Shows and Pantomime and a recognisable face from many of our TV favourites. HIs voices on Spitting Image his collaboration on 3,2,1 and many more variety Specials. With his 50 years in Showbusiness you can imagine the stories he can tell, well today you don't have to use your imagination as we are treated to anecdotes and behind the scenes of a Radio performer. I knew of his talents before I became a member of the Water Rats, of course I knew about the Hudd Lines, I had met Roy Hudd, and June Whitfield and Chris made it the hat trick for me.This is a fun insight so relax and enjoy the World of Prince Rat, Chris Emmett.

We start this episode with Tim having purchased a new Microphone and Martin having technical difficulties and how Galton & Simpson disliked the episode Ericson The Viking compared to the other shows due to the location filming. We mention Tony's Spitting Image Puppet and the Hancock News of the release of ‘The Missing Hancock's on CD in March. We talk bout our main subject of The Blood Donor and the quality of the Telerecording and how it appears on todays modern HD screens, how the script is Circular and Galton & Simpson had thought of the ending before they started writing it, and how Videotape's were wiped after use. In terms of performance, we chat about the now well-known use of Tele-Prompters in this show and watch along with it in real-time, so shove your DVD on to watch along with us. We talk about this episode's supporting cast including June Whitfield and Frank Thornton, Peggy Ann Clifford, Patrick Cargill & Hugh Lloyd. Jon mentions the lost pilot re-make of The Economy Drive ‘Bunclarke with an E' starring Arthur Lowe & James Beck, Tim praises the makeup artist Elizabeth Anderson and how the writers wrote differently for the visual medium. We also discuss some of the differences to the PYE LP recording of this episode and how that release came about. This week we review - Frankie Howerd (Series 2 Episode 4)Originally made for and broadcast on BBC Radio 2, there isn't a huge amount written about this Frankie Howerd show which seems somewhat confused by it's own identity. Named in listings and on the BBC website as simply 'Frankie Howerd' but rereferred to in the show as 'Frankie Howerd's Illustrious Memoirs' and even named in some quarters as 'The Frankie Howerd Show' (a throwback to his 1966 radio show), this radio show spanned twenty episodes, divided into three series between 1973 and 1975.A cross between stand up and a meandering sketch show, it was recorded in front of a studio audience with the assistance of June Whitfield, Ray Fell, Olwyn Griffiths and a four piece band.In this episode, Frankie is accused of being a spy, gets hypnotised and joins a local literary group. It was Craig's first week so he played the 'Getting To Know You' game. Todd in Blackburn played the french-horn and Craig won June Whitfield. The 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson popped into the studio and allowed Craig to celebrate his 50th birthday with him. Craig unveiled his brilliant science experiment to make the weather better by getting everyone in the North West to jump up and down at the same time. (Did it work? And did Will in Blackpool survive being told off by his Mum?). 'Slaphead Bob' (Craig's mate who works in TV) smuggled out some amazing 'Dragon's Den' outtakes and made Craig promise not to play them on the radio. Craig immediately played the 'Dragon's Den' outtakes on the radio. After getting into trouble for playing 'The Biscuit Game', Craig came up with 'The Crisp Game' and it was won by a very drunk 'Theresa'. And the news says that elephants are good at maths so Craig tested this by phoning up a zoo.
