POPULARITY
Rachel Joyce's debut novel The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was a bestseller in 30 languages, became a much-loved film with Jim Broadbent and is about to become a stage musical. She's also got a new novel, a sun-soaked family drama called The Homemade God which has already been hailed by one critic as "the perfect holiday read". Levison Wood has travelled to 150 countries but holiday reading probably isn't top of his priorities as an explorer, documentary maker and photographer. He'll join us to talk about a career that's seen him serve in the army in Afghanistan, walk the full length of the Nile, make documentaries about endangered animals and circumnavigate the Arabian Peninsula. The actor and comedian Kiell Smith Bynoe starred in Ghosts and Stath Lets Flats and presented the Great British Sewing Bee but is about to go on tour with the aim of making improv cool again. Kool Story Bro sees him and a cast of comedians and actors pick up stories from audiences and make them into a show. What can he improv from this week's Loose Ends? Plus music from a contrasting pair of singer-songwriters - indie folk from Matilda Mann and jazz inflected from Maya Delilah.Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced in Salford by Olive Clancy

You can find Ben Shattuck at his website https://www.benshattuck.com/ or on IG @Benshattuck_ This week we chat with Ben Shattuck, author of Six Walks: In the Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau published by Tin House Books in 2022. Amy knew this book would appeal to Carrie because she is nothing if not a literary weirdo, and she has been since high school when she quoted from Thoreau in her senior yearbook. Despite her hopes that Ben would, like her, have a high school infatuation with Thoreau, he explains that his interest began much later. Even if you don't know anything about Thoreau, if you're a walker or a hiker, you have experienced the unique meditative impact of this activity and can appreciate Ben's insights on it. Ben also has a book of fiction out titled The History of Sound that is a finalist for the Pen/Faulkner prize so we are just really thrilled to have him with us today. And this week, for our recommendations section, we didn't just pick a random topic like asparagus or comas to share books about—we actually continue with the theme of walking. We each share at least 3 books that feature walking, hiking, or being in nature in some meditative way. We have literary fiction, memoirs, essays, and even a romance. Books mentioned-- 1- Six Walks: In the Footsteps of Henry David Thoreau by Ben Shattuck 2- The History of Sound by Ben Shattuck 3- Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World by Christian Cooper 4- A Paris Year: My Day to Day Adventures in the Most Romantic City in the World by Janice Macleod 5- Dear Paris by Janice Macleod 6- The French Ingredient: A Memoir by Jane Bertch (La Cuisine French Cooking School) 7- Teaching a Stone to Talk by Annie Dillard 8- Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard 9- The Journals of Henry David Thoreau by Henry David Thoreau 10 - Matrix by Lauren Groff 11- Year of Wonder by Geraldine Brooks 12- Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt 13- Dancing Woman by Elaine Neil Orr 14- A 5 Star Read Recommended by Fellow Book Lover Simone Praylow @fullof_lit - Twenty Years Later by Charlie Donlea 15- Summit Lake by Charlie Donlea 16- Don't Believe It by Charlie Donlea 17- In My Boots: A Memoir of 5 Million Steps Along the Appalachian Trail by Amanda K. Send us a textIn the darkness of an old asylum, a young man unscrews the lid from a bottle of sleeping pills. In the nearby village, two couples begin their day. Local doctor, Eric Parry, mulling secrets, sets out on his rounds, while his pregnant wife sleeps on in the warmth of their cottage. Across the field, in a farmhouse impossible to heat, funny, troubled Rita Simmons is also asleep, her head full of images of a past life her husband prefers to ignore. He's been up for hours, tending to the needs of the small dairy farm he bought, a place where he hoped to create a new version of himself, a project that's already faltering … In this episode we talk to Andrew Miller about his latest novel, which some have called his best yet, The Land in Winter.

Oktober in unsere Kinos kommt.
M. Night Shyamalans nya film KNOCK AT THE CABIN tar upp ett riktigt läskigt och ångestladdat tema.

The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry » ?

With box office down another 12% and Super Mario Bros. still #1, James Cameron-Wilson gives thanks for The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry at #3. Adapted by the author, it stars Jim Broadbent as a man who goes to post a letter – and keeps walking, and James found it deeply moving. On Apple+ he watched Chris Evans in action thriller Ghosted, which he found disappointingly overfamiliar. But worse still, on Disney+, was Peter Pan & Wendy, a live-action remake of the original cartoon, which he found wrong in almost every regard. Simon Rose found the French version of The Three Musketeers – D'Artagnan a perfectly enjoyable version of the much-filmed story. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

James Naughtie is joined by bestselling writer Rachel Joyce who is answering listener questions about The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. This moving, heartwarming story follows Harold as one day he impulsively sets off on a walk from Devon to Northumberland to visit his long lost friend Queenie; despite having no map, no plan, and no decent walking boots. While he tramps across England, Harold reflects on his life, especially his troubled relationship with his wife and son. Our next Bookclub guest is Abir Mukherjee who will be answering questions about A Rising Man - the first in his award winning Wyndham and Banerjee series, set in India during the Raj. Contact us via the Bookclub website to join the recording in December.
The History of Bees by Maja Lunde is set in three different times and in three different countries - nineteenth century England, present day Ohio and Beijing at the end of the 21st century. Each storyline considers the lot of bees and beekeepers: William is designing a new type of hive, George; in Ohio, is trying to stick with traditional methods even though beekeeping and farming are becoming increasingly industrialised and Tao, in 2098, works as a human pollinator as all all the bees have died out. Maja Lunde joins James Naughtie, and Bookclub listeners to talk about this complex , timely novel; about the ecological beliefs which drive her writing and her hopes for the future. In November, Rachel Joyce will be joining James Naughtie for the next Bookclub recording, answering your questions about her bestseller The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Do get in touch via the website (click Take Part In A Recording) if you would like to ask Rachel a question.

Walter is 68 and Mary is 64. He is full of madcap ideas, she resists change. The only thing they have in common is they both hate Christmas. A story with a twist on the Christmas theme and it's classic Rachel Joyce territory – relationships, loss and ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Mary ….. Niamh Cusack Walter ….. Robert Lindsay Helen ….. Cecilia Appiah Directed by Tracey Neale It is in the park that Mary first spots Walter. He's drowning in the Lake and she calls for help. When she returns a few days later, Walter is there and berates her for interfering - all he was trying to do was learn to swim. It's a bad beginning but then their conversation begins ... Mary is played by Niamh Cusack. Her television work includes Heartbeat, Father Brown and The Virtues. Her film credits include In Love with Alma Cogan. Niamh played Lady Macbeth for the RSC and most recently Lenu in the National Theatre's production of My Brilliant Friend. Walter is played by award winning actor, Robert Lindsay. Her other novels include Perfect and The Music Shop. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and The Music Shop are now in development with Netflix.

During a morning of coffee and cake at Durham Book Festival 2017 with Rachel Joyce, author of the international bestselling The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, she discussed her heart-warming new novel The Music Shop.
Amanda and Jenn discuss Civil War reads, diverse middle-grade books, reading slumps, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty and Weregirl & Chimera by C.D. Bell. Bookstore giveaway! Questions 1. Dear Amanda and Jenn, I am a middle school English teacher and I have a student looking for a book recommendations. She has read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, The Giver, and Would You Reach Me and enjoyed them all. She seems to like books that tackle serious social issues as well as science fiction. Our school library is a little outdated and doesn't offer much in the way of books with diverse characters, so I'd like to direct her to something more current and with diverse characters. Thanks in advance. I love the podcast! --Rebecca 2. Hey Amanda and Jenn! I'm having baby #3 in December, and I'm looking for books to read on my e-reader during the middle-of-the-night feedings. I somehow missed this reading opportunity with my first baby, but with baby #2 a few years ago I read so much! Including at least one of Ruth Reichl's memoirs, Molly Wizenberg's Delancey and Homemade Life, but also a bit of romance, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, and some other novels. I'm open to fiction, non-fiction, genre, etc. The main guidelines are: *fairly easy reads - no complex character lists and maps, and nothing too literary or high-minded. *conducive to reading in short bursts - easy to dip in and out of. Nothing so page-turner-y that I'll stay up even longer. Short chapters or frequent text breaks are a bonus, but not required. *nothing scary, dark, bloody, gory, etc... i.e. nothing where the jacket says (or could say) "chilling" or "haunting" *cozy and charming, but not cheesy *definitely no sick or dying kids/babies/children/moms, or disasters/apocalypses/tragedies *available as ebook (Kindle) So, what books can you suggest for me to read in the middle of the night as I nurse my new baby? --Betsy 3. I am looking for books about the Civil War for my father's 60th birthday. My mother is taking him on a trip to Gettysburg and I want to give him some books that will go along with his trip. He prefers non-fiction and has already read and enjoyed Killer Angels. I was going to get him a copy of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy - but was hoping that you might have some other great recommendations! Thank you! Love the podcast! --Erin 4. Hi, Next year I am starting a feminist book club called SFF Fems that will read Science Fiction and Fantasy books by female authors only, with an emphasis on marginalised and own voice authors. Do you have any recommendations that would fit this criteria and make for great discussion at a book club meeting? Thanks so much --Tori 5. I'm trying to find books for my eleven year old daughter Cathy to read, but I'm a bit stumped. She's a voracious reader, and well above a usual eleven year old's reading level (this, just to be clear, isn't me being some annoying mom who likes to talk about how special my daughter is. She just happens to be ahead in reading.). She's read and loved Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and the Percy Jackson novels. She just read my copy of the Mists of Avalon and now has an obsession with arthurian legend. She loves history, and knights, and all that fun stuff, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding books for her. She's been reading some adult books on her own, and I'm very lax about what she's allowed to read and watch (the evidence being that I gave her The Mists of Avalon), and am not concerned about things being "appropriate" for her. We have a very open relationship and she comes to me with questions, we discuss what she's read, and honestly we are a very liberal family. However I would like to find her some age appropriate books as well, because I think it's important for her to read about characters her age to relate to. Everything we've been looking for together either doesn't interest her, or she finds condescending. Any ideas? I think some historical fiction would be good, but I just don't know what to look for. Thanks! --Jenna 6. Hi guys! I love the podcast and I'm so glad you're doing the show weekly now, it's my Friday treat to listen to you on the bus. I am in such a reading slump at the moment and I'm really hoping you can help. I had such a good reading year last year but since January, nothing is clicking with me. Could you suggest some books for getting out of a slump? I'm open to any genre, except horror (because I'm a wimp). If it helps, some books that I loved in 2015 were Spinster by Kate Bolick, Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, A Fair Fight by Anna Freeman and The Queen of the Tearling. --Cat 7. Hello there! Not sure if you have already answered a question similar to this, but I figured I'd go ahead and ask anyway. I am a huge fan of The Gilmore Girls, and I was wondering if you guys know of any books that give the same overall feeling as the show. The fast-paced language, the quirky characters and small town feeling, intelligent women, etc. I am open to any and all genres!
