This week on Dish, Nick and Angela are joined by a powerhouse couple. Brian Cox is a renowned Scottish actor whose career spans more than six decades. Born in Dundee, he was classically trained before becoming a key figure in British theatre. Brian Cox made history as the first actor to portray Dr Hannibal Lecter on screen in Michael Mann's Manhunter in 1986. He went on to star in highly acclaimed films including Braveheart and The Bourne Identity.  On television, Brian Cox is now a cultural icon, thanks to his award-winning portrayal of media titan Logan Roy in Succession. Brian married his wife Nicole in 2002, and they have two sons. Nicole Ansari-Cox is an actor, director and producer. Born in Cologne, she began acting at the age of nine with a breakthrough role in the German crime series Tatort. Her career includes roles in TV shows such as Deadwood and Succession. Nicole frequently shares the stage with her husband, including their current performance in The Score at Theatre Royal Haymarket. Nick prepares the couple's favourite cocktail, a frozen margarita, to start while Angela prepares roast trout with soy, orange and chilli, based on a sweet and spicy salmon recipe from Waitrose. The experts at Waitrose pair this with an English white wine, Chapel Down Bacchus. This episode is one of those great Dish double dates. Brian and Nicole talk about their new play and its parallels with modern life. They share some hilarious insights into their marriage and Brian's eating habits, and treat us to some amazing anecdotes from the set of Succession. You can now watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube  All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help.  Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer them in a future episode.   Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions

Episode 089: Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Matthew McFrederick Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Samuel Beckett's tragicomedy, Waiting for Godot, is a notoriously confounding work of theatre. The play is renowned for its lack of conventional plot or exposition, and for its existential predicament. Given its desolate philosophical landscape it is also surprisingly funny. Its theatrical imagery and intellectual provocation remain as potent as when it was first performed in Paris in 1953. As we record this episode an illustrious production is on stage at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London starring Ben Whishaw and Lucian Msamati. I am delighted to be joined by Dr Matt McFrederick from the University of Reading to help survey this famously challenging landmark of modern drama.

Lucian Msamati has played leading roles on our most famous stages: Salieri in Peter Shaffer's Amadeus at the National Theatre, Iago in Othello at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Estragon opposite Ben Whishaw in Waiting for Godot at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London. He started out performing – in his words – ‘for farmers sitting on beer crates in rural Africa, with tables for a stage'. And when he decided to leave Zimbabwe, where he began his career, to see if he could make it in the UK, he had to work as a cleaner to pay the bills. His perseverance paid off: as well as success on stage, he's appeared in high-profile TV shows, including Game of Thrones and the Number One Ladies Detective Agency. After his role in Amadeus, it's no surprise to find Mozart among his musical passions, which also include Satie, Tchaikovsky and an unusual track by Stevie Wonder.Presenter Michael Berkeley Producer Clare Walker

Across the world, the rise of various forms of authoritarianism and ethno-nationalism seems to be on an ever upward trend. This creates huge uncertainties across multiple dimensions – personal, cultural, political, and not least of which in challenges business leaders face as they attempt to navigate across this uncertainty. All of this turmoil is, according to Larry Kramer - the Vice Chancellor and President of the London School of Economics - to be expected. Neo-liberalism, the once dominant political/economic paradigm, is no longer able to explain or order our understandings of our world. This triggers a search for, and creation of, alternatives. If, or until a different liberal paradigm emerges, we are destined to contend with illiberal, authoritarian and often ethno-national alternatives. In this podcast Larry and I discuss the fall of neo-liberalism and the emerging contours of what may come to replace it. How and when this new paradigm emerges and whether it will successfully defeat the existing alternatives is perhaps the most important question we will face in the next decade(s). Larry provides a thoughtful and provocative framework in which to understand these macro trends. Prior to being appointed to lead the LSE, Larry was the President of the Willam and Flora Hewlett Foundation for 12 years. With assets of over $14 billion, the Foundation is one of the largest sources of grants in the USA. Prior to his work at the Foundation, Larry was the Dean of the Stanford Law School and is a world expert in US Constitutional law and the role of judicial review within that system. Not wanting to miss the opportunity to discuss recent shifts in the US Supreme Court with such an expert, at the end of our conversation we discuss these developments as an example of the power of a paradigm shift - the rise of ‘originalism' as a reaction to the state-led expansion of individual rights – to take on real world consequences. In this context, we discuss the Dobbs decision, the overturning of the Chevron defence and the emerging presidential immunity doctrine. My discussion with Larry reminded me of how fortunate we are at TRIUM to have the LSE as a partner. The depth of analysis and understanding of the macro trends affecting the environment in which business operates continues to be a unique selling point of our EMBA. In the 30 plus years since this 80's flick was released, nearly every scene has become iconic and the stuff of rom-com legend. So in honor of Valentine's Day, cuddle up with the one you love and join Tim Williams and guest co-host, Bethany Wells, as they discuss “When Harry Met Sally” from 1989 on this episode of the 80's Flick Flashback. Here are some additional behind the scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: In many romantic comedies, there is a bullying significant other or a contrived misunderstanding that would keep the two leads apart. This film is special in that it has neither of these clichés; the only thing keeping Harry and Sally apart is their own various neuroses. Harry is shown reading Stephen King's "Misery." The film adaptation would be the next movie directed by Rob Reiner. In early 2004, the film was adapted for the stage in a Theatre Royal Haymarket production starring Luke Perry and Alyson Hannigan. Mplly Ringwold and Michael Landes later replaced Hannigan and Perry for the second cast. This weeks episode is with theatre, comedy and screen producer, KITTY WORDSWORTH. Kitty and I have been comrades in the DDC (Dead Dad Club) since we met at University, and for so many years had these intimate, private conversations (usually lying in bed at the dead of night - no pun intended) talking about our grief and how we felt about our consecutive deceased dads. These conversations we’re definitely led by Kitty - I take no credit - as Kitty walks through the world with an authentic and direct honesty which allows people to trust and feel comfortable around her instantly. This transparency luckily doesn’t stop at subject matters most find awkward or taboo, allowing whoever she’s speaking to to feel as if they could just be discussing what they had for lunch that day. She allowed me talk about my dad in a way nobody ever had. She has a gift she doesn’t even know she’d giving. Kitty’s career started earlier than most, producing shows at Jermyn Street Theatre at the ripe old age of 21 and founding a theatre company (@damselproductions) at the age of 22, where she has showcased performances at Soho Theatre, Theatre Royal Haymarket, The Bunker, Theatre 503, Live@Zedel and Southwark Playhouse, to name just a few. Her work ethic and savvy creativity has always inspired me, and it was so very wonderful having her on Daddy Issues to delve back into our no.1 fave topic. * If you like what you hear, it would be so appreciated if you could rate, review and subscribe as we love hearing your thoughts and feedback, and it helps get the podcast to reach more ears. * Created | Hosted | Produced by Angharad George-Carey Mastered and Compressed | by Worgie Productions Music | by Julietta * Social Media: Angharad George-Carey @angharadgeorgecarey Daddy Issues Podcast @thedaddyissuespodcast Kitty Wordsworth @kittywordsworth Damsel Productions @damselproductions * If you'd like to seek guidance and support for any issues raised in the episodes there are three websites we would recommend depending on your individual needs: www.juliasamuel.co.uk JULIA SAMUEL MBE www.blackmindsmatteruk.com BLACK MINDS MATTER www.griefuntangled.com GREIF UNTANGLED www.thecalmzone.net CALM * We love hearing from you! ArtistYou can also watch this episode on Youtube where English, Italian and Spanish subtitles are available or visit the Metralla Rosa website for more details.Nick Cuthell is a figurative artist from New Zealand with a modern image and a direct and frank manner – yet we could easily imagine him dressed in 19th century fashion walking the streets of London or Florence. This invisible link to the past may be exactly what informs his style of art, which is distinctly realistic and in keeping with the European impressionist and neoclassical portraiture tradition of the 1800s.His gentle eyes are especially good at capturing genuine refinement and beauty, and for this Nick relies on the traditional painting techniques known as ‘Alla Prima‘, or ‘L’Atelier‘, where students learn directly from maestros.Nick has a sweet tendency to recreate aesthetic and ethical virtue through his paintings. Like a modern-day gentleman trying to rescue a beautiful painting tradition, his very presence calls for serenity, and for a validation of beauty that exists only in what is evoked with purified simplicity and unquestionable dignity.Nick has been fortunate enough to be able to portray prominent contemporary personalities such as the renowned British actor Ian Mckellen, as well as other actors from the film ‘The Hobbit‘. He was also asked to paint the cast of ‘Waiting for Godot‘ by the Theatre Royal Haymarket. He has portrayed writer Martin Sherman, British/Nigerian actress Gloria Onitiri, and most recently Georgina Beyer, the world’s first openly transgender woman with the rank of mayor and later, member of the New Zealand parliament. However, for obvious reasons, it is his portrait of the current queen, Elizabeth II, commissioned by The New Zealand Portrait Gallery that was the great turning point of his career.Carla and Nick share a beautiful relationship of mutual cooperation and silent approval for the human and professional, which is why this interview has an aura of friendship pervading everything it touches. This episode of Metralla Rosa is a delightful, gentle walk through the life of a painter that should not be missed. And now, enjoy the interview! Y es quizás esta invisible conexión con el pasado lo que define su estilo artístico, claramente realista y apegado...for further information about this interview, including links to anything mentioned by Nick, or to continue reading this text in Spanish, English and Italian, visit the Metralla Rosa website.

A bilingual production of Moliere's Tartuffe at Theatre Royal Haymarket, written by Christopher Hampton and updated to a setting in contemporary Los Angeles sounds like a winning formula. It has had some damning reviews elsewhere in the press; what will our reviewers make of it? Francois Ozon's newest film L'amant Double deals with a Hitchcockian plot line involving twin psychiatrists both treating the same beautiful young woman who is having emotional and relationship problems. They also both happen to be sleeping with her too. It's very slick, stylish and French but is it any good? A final collection of short stories by acclaimed Irish writer William Trevor, who died in 2016, has just been published. We discuss "Last Stories" Animals and Us is the latest exhibition at Turner Contemporary in Margate; it reflects on the relationship between humans and other animals. How well does it deal with such a gargantuan subject? Elmore Leonard's book Get Shorty was made into a successful film in 1995 and is now a TV series starring Chris O'dowd. Tom Sutcliffe's guests are Christopher Frayling, Rebecca Stott and Tiffany Jenkins. The producer is Oliver Jones.
