TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ BRUCE FOREST # 045 - PART 2 Bruce Forest apart from the other DJ's of that time. He was very scientific in how he approached everything that he used multiple sound sources such as Keyboards, samplers, drum machines and effect units to remix records live in the club. At Better Days Disco this is were he meets David Cole who regularly played the keyboards live alongside Bruce as he DJ'd. Bruce and the club was hugely responsible for breaking some of the first house tracks to come out from Steve Silk Hurley around 1983, which was way ahead of its time before other clubs and DJ's even picked up on them. Learn about how Bruce met his beloved wife Mitzy who he has been happily married to. Bruce shares the story of the recording of Loleatta Holloway from her live performance at the club and how the tape was stolen, copied and how Junior Vasquez released it as Ellis D. Steve Silk Hurley, Francois Kevorkian, and David Morales were such inspirations to Bruce. Bruce eventually leaves the music industry and turns his sights to the internet in the early 1990s and helped developed brands such as Netflix, Vimeo and the internet. This man is a true legend so catch the show to hear all about Bruce Forest's journey. Tune in to find out why...

His enthusiasm for DJ Larry Levan at the infamous Paradise Garage led him to Shep Pettibone (another DJ/producer begging for a Legacy induction) where they edited mixes for multiple artists like Madonna, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Pet Shop Boys, and more. Several of his earliest underground House hits like "Work That Pussy" and "Drag Queen" were under the moniker Ellis D with the latter featured here. In 1989, he co-founded the Sound Factory and simultaneously became an in-demand remixer for several big-label artists. After the Sound Factory closed in 1995, he held multiple residencies including at the Tunnel, and subsequently returned to the former Sound Factory now called Arena. IF MADONNA CALLS Junior introduced Madonna to vogue at the Sound Factory, which served as an inspiration for a massively successful song in 1990 by the same name. At the time, she was making a name for herself on the dancefloor by embracing the emerging House Music sounds and flipping them to a more commercial audience. She has long been associated with dance music trends by associating herself with underground names like Shep Pettibone and William Orbit before latching onto Junior Vasquez to remix several tracks from her "Bedtime Stories" album. It was around this time she had allegedly agreed to perform at one of Junior's Sound Factory shows and bowed out at the last moment. Queens being queens, Junior took one of the messages she left on his answering machine and looped it into the deep house groove "If Madonna Calls" without her permission using the phrase "this is Madonna" "are you there" "call me in Miami." The bitch track went all the way to #2 on the Billboard Dance Club charts and spawned multiple remixes — including anniversary remixes. Afterward, any chance of reconciliation and working together again went out the door. This turned out to be a lucky move on her part as she went on to introduce the world to Victor Calderone and Peter Rauhofer (who was already riding high with Club 69). Nevertheless, neither of them is getting any younger and Madge is going through some things at the moment. It's time to come together and bury the hatchet. Life's too short for former besties to hold onto grudges. This set does not reflect any official Junior remixes of Madonna other than "Secret" and the fabulous Marvin Gaye rendering of "I Want You" where Junior was commissioned to remix the track but it never received an official release. It would take probably 10 sets to really showcase his amazing talent. Drugs, Sex and Dance In 2006, Junior gave an interview to A&U (America's AIDS Magazine) about a 5 year period where everything was a blur due to abusing  crystal meth. I remember this article very well but it appears to have been taken down and his Wikipedia page omits it entirely. While he's clean and sober now and starting a new chapter in his life — this is an important story that shouldn't be buried. There are excerpts and message boards dedicated to this dark period in his life but it's not fair to quote any of them without the original interview as a source. Life's too short for former besties to hold onto  grudges. This set does not really reflect any official Junior remixes of Madonna other than "Secret" and the fabulous Marvin Gaye rendering of "I Want You" where Junior was commissioned to remix the track but it never received an official release. DIVA DIVA DIVA Scroll through the list of of diva's in the Party Favorz "Diva Hall of Fame" and you will be hard-pressed to find anyone Junior hasn't remixed. From Annie Lennox to Whitney Houston and every diva in between, there's hardly anyone in there that he doesn't know or hasn't remixed. Seriously! These two volumes honoring the master DJ are nowhere near as comprehensive and representative of this man's work and barely scratch the surface. I understand there is currently a biopic being made about his life. Considering how long he's been in the industry and how many artists he's worked with — it's my hope that they don't whitewash an important factor of...

MOTHER, SCHOLAR, TEACHER, REVOLUTIONARY: NEŞE DEVENOT Today is the last day of Lent, as tomorrow begins the Holy Triduum (the three days leading up to Easter), and this is our sixth consecutive episode, fulfilling our promise to bring you an episode every week of Lent without fail. Thanks go out to KMO for inspiring this goal with his 9+ years and 500 episodes of weekly C-Realm Podcasts! This effort has been so much fun and so energizing that we're just going to keep on going! To celebrate the goal and the return of Spring, we are asking that you help us reach 1000 "likes" by the end of March! Click the Button below to "like" our Facebook Page and invite others who might find us inspiring to do the same!     Nese and Ellis-D Today, Jonathan talks with his friend, Dr. Neşe Devenot, PhD., Neşe is an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities at the University of Puget Sound, where she teach classes on psychedelics and literature. She is also working on a book, Chemical Poetics: The Literary History of Psychedelic Science. Neşe was also a 2015-16 Research Fellow at the New York Public Library's Timothy Leary Papers and a Research Fellow with the New York University Psilocybin Cancer Anxiety Study, where she participated in a qualitative study of patient experiences. Neşe received her PhD in 2015 from the Program in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing her studies on psychedelic philosophy, the literary history of chemical self-experimentation (“trip reports”), and radical poetics.  She is the founder of the Psychedemia interdisciplinary psychedelics conference (which has a radical and profound influence on Jonathan and inspired the creation of this very website), and was a founding member of the MAPS Graduate Student Association. In this conversation, Jonathan and Neşe discuss her radical healing from crippling childhood social anxiety through the intervention of LSD, her struggles with postpartum depression, and her advocacy for human breastmilk sharing. They also talk about the founding of Psychedemia, her work on the Leary Papers, and their shared conviction in the urgent need for more women and voices of color in the psychedelic conversation.  Neşe also talks about her recent news that she is one of the recipients of the 2016 Cosmic Sister Spirit Plant and Women of the Psychedelic Renaissance Grants. Beyond April's Coachella 2013 podcast, it's been two full months since I've finished a 'cast with the tracks that I personally am really feeling the most. Although it's coming at the end of the month -- Memorial Day weekend to be precise -- I'm so excited for this line-up that I literally can't type the text fast enough to get it out. These are the tracks that I've been feeling the most emotional connection with these past couple of months. I think this mix is truly the best selection of songs I've ever put together and I'm so excited about it. It travels from some old school NYC house, to a bit of a Daft Punk-a-thon ... then heads into a bit of white boy EDM land, before emerging into some serious diva sould realness. It's a JOURNEY, it thrills me for the whole ride, and I hope it does the same for you too! So, throw "Spring Fling" on your iPod because I'm excited to get you movin'. I'm traveling a lot for work and family obligations over the next two months, so I've had to pass on some recent rounds of my regular DJ gigs in LA. Here's where you can catch me playing soon: June 8th - LA Pride Festival (6:35 - 7:35 PM .... followed by my DJ mother, Aaron Elvis, right after) June 9th - Chad Hudson Events' LA PRIDE at the Palihouse rooftop (10 AM - 3 PM) June 21st - Stripper Circus at Share nightclub, Las Vegas (EDC weekend!) June 30th - NYC Gay Pride, Shark at the Dream Downtown hotel July 13th - High Tea at the Hard Rock Hotel, San Diego Pride July 14th - Concrete Hero, LA Historic Park (fundraiser for APLA) July 19th - Stripper Circus at Share nightclub, Las Vegas July 21st - Size Sunday's at Here lounge, West Hollywood Without further delay, the "Spring Fling" (Soul) Tracklist: "Get Huh (Twisted)", Ellis D feat. Elder Brothers? Official Podcast

Let us pause to pay homage to one of the great disco vocalists of all time. With the recent passing of Loleatta Holloway, dance music has lost another brave voice to father time. In this mix, Ben takes Ellis D's unauthorized pressing of Loleatta's epic spoken word riff from Better Days, one of NYC's finest disco venues from the late 70's, and lays it over a 112 minute mixtape that combines some classic house jams with new cuts from the crates. The spirit remains.
