This is the second half of my conversation with author Elysa Gardner whose new book is titled:  Magic To Do — Pippin's Fantastic, Fraught, Journey To Broadway And Beyond. On our previous episode Elysa shared the story of how PIPPIN's composer & lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, first began work on the show when he was a student at Carnegie Tech (soon to be Carnegie Mellon) University, where an early and very different version of PIPPIN was first produced. After graduating and returning home to NYC Schwartz began creating an all new version of the show but quickly got sidetracked by Godspell.  The massive success of that little Off-Broadway musical and its chart topping hit song, coupled with his high profile collaboration creating lyrics for Leonard Bernstein's MASS moved Stephen Schwartz into the front ranks of musical theater songwriters, and quickly led to PIPPIN being optioned for Broadway with a new book by Roger O'Hirson, and to be directed & choreographed by then five time Tony Award winner Bob Fosse. This set the stage for a now legendary backstage power struggle between the 23 year old wunderkind composer and the masterful Broadway showman and hitmaker. And that's where we pick up our conversation today.  Somehow their contentious and difficult collaboration produced one of the most popular, long-running, and influential musicals of the Modern Era, and later in the episode Elysa and I explore the now 50 year legacy of PIPPIN, especially how it has served as a tremendous inspiration to several generations of Broadway show makers such as Jeanine Tesori and Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, and how it paved the way to the pop music inflected musicals of today. In this episode, we sit down with occupational therapist Dr Elysa Roberts to discover why OT can be effective in treating eating disorders.  First, what is an occupation? It's generally defined as “any activity in which one engages”, which means it's a lot more than just a job. An occupation can include eating, exercising, working, shopping, socialising, parenting, education, time spent on spiritual practice... the list just goes on. Occupations are all the ordinary and everyday activities of life. An eating disorder can be considered an occupation, but one that isn't good for your health or well-being. Recovery could also be defined as an occupation, and that's why Occupational Therapists can play a key role in a person's treatment team. Dr Roberts, an OT since the early ‘90s, says that she realised the importance of OT as a treatment modality through her own lived experience. “I'd go through waves of treatment, be discharged, recover, and then go through it again all while establishing my OT career. Unfortunately, what wasn't happening in those days was strong relapse prevention programmes, or relapse prevention being included as part of recovery.” Now things are changing. Dr Roberts describes how OT can help – first by bringing a unique and holistic understanding of an individual's mental, physical and sensory profile, but also by co-designing practical interventions that can make all the difference to ongoing recovery. If you think you need to find out more about occupational therapists and how they could help you or someone you love, Butterfly could help. This week I'm joined by the wonderful Dr Elysa Roberts who has been featured in the recent Butterfly Foundation campaign, an eating disorder looks like me. This is such a crucial and important campaign, highlighting the voices of people who don't fit the harmful eating disorder stereotype. That stereotype is a leading reason why so many people find accessing treatment difficult, if not impossible. In a survey conducted by Butterfly, they found that 57% of Australians believe that eating disorders mostlly affect young girls . There is also an enduring belief that they are something we grow out of or can be too smart for. Elysa felt unable to put her hand up for help for decades for precisely these reasons. In our chat today, we discuss how Elysa developed an eating disorder, why it continued and the very real shame so many feel when reaching out for support. Curiosity Killed the Rat

This episode, Kate and Matt are joined by Elysa for a super serious scientific conversation about… butts. Specifically, we talk about the role butts play in a very important part of life: waste removal. Interestingly, not all creatures have butts that develop and function the same, nor do they deal with waste removal in the same ways. So, this episode, we go on a tour of anuses across the animal kingdom. We talk about humans, and how our anus develops and works. But(t) we also talk about animals with mouth-butts, creatures that can create jet-pack-style transportation with their butts, animals that breathe through their butts, and animals that weaponize their behinds. We talk about transient anuses, animals with disposable butts, and creatures that just don't have butts at all! We also discuss the very important question… what kind of waste-disposal system would cat-dog have? We also tackle a listener question about itching… why do we scratch when we feel an itch? On March 6th, 2021 twelve college students in the Adventure Media class at Texas Tech University set off on a bikepacking trip as part of their course curriculum. This year the classes challenge was the Caprock Canyon State Park and Trailway, which in total was 66 miles with very little climbing, but the wind made up for what the elevation profile lacked! This course is the brainchild of Dr. Jerod Foster who somehow convinced a University to allow him to take students bikepacking in remote places as part of a college course he created and teaches called Adventure Media. To be honest, when you read the words, or hear someone tell you about this Adventure Media course it doesn't click immediately. At least, it didn't for me. When Jerod originally laid out the course in Episode 3 I kinda got it, but I didn't really get it until I went on their class trip in 2019 to Big Bend Ranch State Park. The Terrior film was produced from that 2019 trip and it's a visual introduction into what this class is all about. When you show up in a remote destination with rugged terrain, hours away from any medical assistance, and you look around at the 16 college students assembled ready to tackle whatever comes. And their gear is a mess, and they are wrecking, and bags are falling off, but I can promise you none of that is what defines this or any of the other trips like this. This episode is different from anything we have ever done before. It takes place in an Arroyo in the Caprock Canyon State Park at dusk. It was a beautiful setting to have a discussion about the experiences and feelings that were had and shared throughout the day. This will be part one in a two part series from this trip. In the next one I will be following Elysa and Tom on their personal journeys during this trip, with narration and commentary by Jerod Foster and I. These episodes aren’t possible without your support. If you haven’t heard Bikes or Death is going back on the road to do in-person interviews again! My first trip with Van or Death with be to NM and AZ covering 2,500 in 4.5 days and interviewing 4 great guest.
