Cleaner Air from Better Plants: The Neoplants Story

Business for Good Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 1, 2025 49:26

We spend about 90 percent of our lives indoors, yet the air inside our homes and offices is often far more polluted than the air outside. Volatile organic compounds—better known as VOCs—are constantly emitted by furniture, cleaning products, and even the very walls around us. Formaldehyde, benzene, toluene—these chemicals sound like something you'd find in an industrial park, but they're actually in the places where we eat, sleep, and work.  Well, what if nature could give us a hand here? What if plants, and even microbes, could be supercharged to clean our air at a level that truly makes a difference? That's exactly the mission of today's guest: Patrick Torbey, CEO and co-founder of Neoplants. His company is using synthetic biology to enhance houseplants and their soil microbes with built-in air purification superpowers.  Right now, they are offering microbial powders called Power Drops to mix with water and sprinkle onto the soil of your own houseplants to super-charge their air purifying capacity. I already ordered mine and am using them now.  They also offer Neo Px, which is their all-in-one plant and microbe duo, including a Marble Queen Pothos.  The bottom line is that they claim their technology can make plants up to 30 times more effective at cleaning the air in our homes and offices than the plants we currently have today.  Their systems don't just filter air pollution but actually metabolize it into harmless compounds. In this episode, Patrick and I have a wide-ranging conversation about topics like synthetic biology, science fiction, nature vs. nurture, and of course, how his company's tech will both make money and make the world a better place. Already the company has raised more than $20 million in venture capital, with more still yet to come.  So, if you've ever wondered how science, business, and sustainability can come together to solve a problem hiding in plain sight—or in this case, plain smell—you won't want to miss this conversation.  Discussed in this episode You can order Neoplants' microbes for your houseplants' soil here. Our past podcast episodes with Pivot Bio (nitrogen-enhancing microbes) and Living Carbon (rapid-growth trees). Patrick discussed how reading Cosmos changed his life. There was also a 1980 TV Series by Sagan called Cosmos and an updated remake in 2014 by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Patrick discusses how China is planting forests outside cities to improve air quality. Patrick recommends reading science fiction, leading Paul to recommend a book he recently read, Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke. More about Patrick Torbey Patrick Torbey is the co-founder and CEO of Neoplants, a Paris-based synthetic biology startup, engineering plants' genomes and microbiomes to have a positive impact on the air we breathe. Patrick has a PhD in genetic editing from ENS Paris, his expertise spans molecular biology, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship. He drove Neoplants R&D efforts for many years as CTO, and is now leading the company. Patrick is passionate about taking the “fi” out of “sci-fi.” He is fascinated by the potential of deep technologies to change the world for the better, and convinced that we need more and better GMOs to face the challenges of today in a sustainable way.

She is particularly interested in studying how individuals adapt to the amount of resources available in their environment, and how our social cognition influences pro-environmental behavior.   In this episode, we focus on how resources impact psychology, and climate change. We start by talking about noncognitive skills and their impact on academic achievement. We then get into how quantitative changes in resources lead to qualitative changes in people's priorities and psychology. We discuss the importance of time horizons, and talk about pyramids of needs. We discuss how resource allocation affects cooperation and health-related behavior. We discuss risky behaviors through different time horizons, and approaches to prevent hazardous behaviors. We talk about where stereotypes about the behavior of people of low socioeconomic status come from. We discuss how people formed perceived morbidity and mortality risks associated with COVID-19. We talk about the belief-action gap and what explains it. We discuss the labeling of behaviors as “irrational”. Finally, we talk about the social dilemma of climate change and the cognitive mechanisms that play a role in environmental policies, and the important role of social scientists in helping tackle climate change. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, MIKKEL STORMYR, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Last week, scientists from all over Ireland and Europe were trapped on Inishmaan for three days as a result of a typical November storm. Luckily, studying such extreme weather and its effect on the Irish coast and climate change was exactly why they were there. The scientists had been attending a scientific conference showcasing research on ocean science, forecasting and climate change focused on developing a roadmap towards a permanent Aran Islands International Research Station (AIRS). Aran Islands International Research Station (AIRS) Inishmaan is uniquely placed for such a permanent research station, and would open major new perspectives for Irish and European research, not only in wave and storm science but also on a variety of other areas such as geology, agronomy, botany, climate change, archaeology, and renewable energies. This unique location provides unparalleled access to study ocean storms and weather systems, areas of research of critical importance as the world struggles to understand and adapt to climate change. The conference provided a timely forum for leading international scientists to meet with members of the local community to discuss how to best serve ocean and climate science, and to consider how the research station could be adapted into a more permanent facility. The HIGHWAVE station had been planned since 2019 by Professor Frederic Dias and Senior Research Engineer Arnaud Disant, was funded by the European Research Council, and has been operational since 2021. It is now providing invaluable data on local wave conditions and their effects on coastal erosion and future global warming trends. The conference began with opening addresses from Prof Orla Feely, UCD Vice President for Research, Innovation and Impact, and Prof Philippe Maitre, Vice-President, Research Strategy from ENS-Paris, the two founding institutions of AIRS. The local community was represented by the Aran Island Energy Coop (CFOAT), Comhlacht Forbartha Inis Meáin, and Coláiste Naomh Eoin, and there were exciting presentations that caught the attention of the scientific representatives of Ireland, France, Italy, USA, Norway, Uruguay, and the Netherlands. The conference concluded with a clear consensus on the need for a permanent research station on the Aran Islands, and UCD and ENS will work together in pursuit of this.
