“A mom is only as happy as her unhappiest child.” Have you seen this quote floating around social media? It's caught our eyes more than a few times.I think for a lot of us as parents, this phrase can feel accurate because when our child is hurting or struggling, it becomes the main focus of our lives. Our emotions can get all tangled up in their anxiety, pain, or their failures, and those feelings can make us feel like we let them down. You may be in a hard parenting season right now. You may be having a difficult time feeling okay because your child is not okay at all. If that's you, we are so glad to introduce our guest, Erica Wiggenhorn. She is a national speaker, best-selling author, and she's on the writing team for Proverbs 31 Ministries. Erica's passion is to equip people to read God's Word with confidence. She's also a wife and a mom of two who knows all about the joys and challenges of parenting. In this episode, Erica shares with us:The danger of focusing too much on a single circumstanceHow we can unwittingly direct what our children are placing their faith inPractical ways you can remain connected with your spouse in this seasonAnd much more!We hope you find encouragement and hope in this episode!Show Notes: growinghometogether.com/erica-wiggenhorn-95
Today we are featuring Geri Tanzer! Geri's story is one that offers a unique perspective about recognizing the community around you and taking steps to cultivate it. Geri was raised Catholic and shares that she did come to a true understanding of who Jesus is at a young age. She felt a hunger for God and church and attended on her own. However, in college church was not so much of a priority, but she always felt she had that personal relationship. Life went on and Geri found herself married with a son. Her son began attending a new school later in elementary school and this is where Geri was introduced to multiple women from Desert Springs. Slowly but surely the Lord began to build out this community for her. An encounter at Heathrow Airport with Erica Wiggenhorn is what really started drawing Geri into this idea of community and diving deeper into her relationship with God. For the first time in her life, she began to truly study and know the Bible. All of this led up to Geri receiving a breast cancer diagnosis at age 46. This was something that she had feared for years and for it to become a reality was heart wrenching. And yet, God was faithful. He was faithful particularly through His people, the ones He had seemed to specifically place right around Geri. What is even more amazing is that this eventually turned to a ministry opportunity for Geri herself. Suddenly she was able to be this light for Christ as she dealt with this diagnosis all while working in the corporate world. You will be encouraged as you hear about how the Lord revealed community, how He healed and how He strengthened Geri to minister to others then and even more so now. We love Geri's boldness in creating Christian community in a corporate workplace and trust that God is using her in great ways. Geri wanted to give a special thanks to those who came around her during her cancer journey: Andy & Brienne McDonald, Barry & Carolyn Boehmer and Jonathan & Erica WiggenhornWednesday night women's Bible study - https://dscchurch.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/2201960Erica Wiggenhorn's Stories Collective Episode 73 - https://open.spotify.com/episode/7CAHAJJxgLeyoctUXSxM2A?si=6c9e0ab26d7e42b3*available wherever you listen to podcastsMeals Ministry at DSCC - https://dscchurch.churchcenter.com/groups/care-support-group/meals-more-ministryMay baptism services at DSCC - https://dscchurch.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/2190355Would you please subscribe and leave us a review? The summer is slowly starting to wind down and we could not think of a better person to talk with us at this time than Erica Wiggenhorn! Erica is an award-winning author and is the founder of Every Life Ministries. We're so thankful to have her as a part of our church family! If you are a woman who attends Bible Study at Desert Springs, you have probably been a part of one of the studies Erica has written. In this interview we had the opportunity to speak with Erica on a personal level. We really appreciate Erica's realness; you're going to feel like you're catching up with a friend you've had forever over coffee. Erica's story starts in her time at Azusa Pacific University where she met her husband Jonathan (that's a funny story that you'll have to listen to hear). They married shortly after graduating college and later moved to Michigan for Jonathan's schooling. Moving to Michigan was a big step as Erica had never left California. This move is where she learned to seek out and cultivate real community. Life was bringing Erica a lot as she was trying to balance her husband's demanding schedule with her own career all while struggling with infertility. Having Christian community became vital while navigating all of these things. They ended up moving to North Carolina and then eventually Arizona to care for Erica's ailing father. We're thankful the Wiggenhorn family was able to become a part of Desert Springs after moving to Arizona. Multiple moves, being a new mom, the death of her father and the stresses of work were leaving Erica feeling exhausted and on the verge of burnout. She prayed in desperation to know God in a real way - and God's answer to Erica was to begin studying Ezekiel. This began the road to becoming the author so many of us know now. You're going to want to take notes as SO much wisdom is scattered throughout this real and candid conversation about what it takes to develop real and lasting community. God can really move when we being to take those initial steps. You'll hear so much about the groundwork that was laid simply by Erica taking the steps that were in front of her. God is always leading us into community with Him and others; we just have to follow. These show notes can hardly sum up this conversation, you've got to listen!Learn more about Erica and her ministry: https://ericawiggenhorn.comErica's books and Bible studies: https://ericawiggenhorn.com/books/Connect with Erica on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ericawiggenhorn/?hl=enWould you please subscribe and leave us a review? Erica Wiggenhorn used to be afraid to read her Bible. When she first became a Christian, she was told by her youth leader she needed to read her Bible in order to grow closer to Jesus. But whenever she tried reading it, she felt like she was reading a foreign language. So she avoided her Bible and Bible studies for years, until a friend drug her to a study. And it changed her life. Once she began realizing how powerful God's word is her appetite for Bible reading grew exponentially. So much so that she began teaching Bible studies and how now written numerous studies, including her most recent one Unexpected Revival: Experiencing God's Goodness Through Disappointment and Doubt, a study through the book of Ezekial. Erica says, "There is power in [the Bible]. There is power in this word. It is alive. It is active. And it does something in us when we open it." Erica's heart for Jesus and others shines bright in our conversation. Show notes: Carolroper.org/podcast Erica's website Ericawiggenhorn.com

We are so looking forward to sharing today's conversation with you! Our host Sarah Schalow got to record an amazing conversation with her friend Haley Smith. Haley has been at Desert Springs since the early 2000s and has literally grown up at the church. She was involved in the youth group, participating in SMI trips and all of the things we love to offer our students. Though Haley had a relationship with God she explains that she began to feel this tension of living two different lives during high school. She felt that she had to keep her struggles under wraps. After high school Haley attended the University of Arizona and tried her best to stay close to what she knew would be best for her. Being in a new environment brought ups and downs and Haley still had this feeling that she could not be open with those around her, especially those who knew her from home. One day in the spring of 2015 a decision she never thought she would make brought about a pregnancy at the age of 19. You'll hear Haley talks us through how she began to tell people around her, how the pregnancy brought her back to close community, what life was like as a young single mom and how her son Forrest made her want to be a better Christian and woman. Haley also met the love of her life at Desert Springs and became a college professor, you'll get to hear those stories too! Haley ultimately encourages all of us to remember that God never fails us; even when we have moments of failure, He is right there with us ready to walk us through. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Do you long to feel a closer connection to God? To discern His voice, experience His peace, and live in His joy? Erica Wiggenhorn and I talk about how to experience God's faithfulness when surrounded by uncertainty, how to reignite our hope instead of losing heart, and how to realize the call of God, reawakening our purpose when we experience revival in our own hearts. Quotables from the episode: Revival is a personal heart cry before God, asking Him to meet us in our desperation and brokenness. We tend to doubt our beliefs and believe our doubts because of distraction, and as a result, God feels far away. Doubt can be the doorway to intimacy with God. Revival brings us to God who can do anything and is always doing the best for us. The enemy's desire is to cause us to doubt God's character. There is no intimacy without first an investment of time. Faith is always intermeshed with fear. What we see as punishment, like God saying no to a request, may actually be God's protection for us. Scripture References: Ezekiel 11:19-20 “I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from then their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. They will be my people, and I will be their God.” Ezekiel 20:42 “Then. You will know that I am the Lord, when I bring. You into the land of Israel, the land I had sworn with uplifted hand to give to your ancestors.” Recommended Resources: The Unexpected Revival: Experiencing God's Goodness Through Disappointment and Doubt by Erica Wiggenhorn Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. What helped you persevere in reading and learning to study? (14:11) When did you start writing? Why Bible studies? (20:06) When going through the study, what was the tension between "I'm checking all the boxes" and "this is not the God I know"? Revival in America may not come in the form of a huge crowd at a big tent church service, but as a busy mother cries out to God while hovering over her kitchen sink. Erica Wiggenhorn is the founder of Every Life Ministries, and she routinely speaks at seminars and retreats, transforming lives nationwide. She believes that revival will begin when everyday men and women open their hearts to God and begin the process of repentance. Crying out to God sparks revival, and that single spark can spread to others, creating an unquenchable roaring fire as in the days of Pentecost, she says. Erica shares insights from her study of the book of Ezekiel, and how Scripture lays out the process and pattern of what revival should look like. TAKEAWAYS Erica wrote a Bible study entitled, An Unexpected Revival, about her discoveries after studying the book of Ezekiel The book of Ezekiel talks about the prerequisites that must be met for revival to take place in a nation All revival must begin with repentance, which is a pattern repeated in Scripture There are often two precursors to revival: individual repentance and the reckoning of a nation's leaders
Ready for an unexpected revival? Today's guest, Erica Wiggenhorn, shares how true revival differs from its usual definitions and has an awesome impact on each person's quality of life. Erica Wiggenhorn is the founder of Every Life Ministries, bringing the truths of Scripture to transform lives. With An Unexpected Revival being her fifth release from Moody Publishers, she also serves on the writing team for Proverbs 31 Ministries' First 5 Teaching App, teaches in various local and national venues, and serves on the women's ministry leadership team for her church. She's also taught women in the Arizona State Prison system and overseas. Wiggenhorn explores how we seek revival externally, while God often chooses to change everything beginning within those who seek him. The Lord affects great transformation by revitalizing the inner being of one individual at a time. Erica shares the needs expressed by those she surveyed, noting people voiced a desire to learn how to pray more powerfully and grow more sensitive to the Holy Spirit. What does it look like to live and pray in the power of the Holy Spirit? We discuss the vital role of the Spirit in our faith journey and spiritual strength. We also explore the relational nature of God's heart for us in the process of revival. Wiggenhorn examines the Hebrew terms that demonstrate the loving, tender motive of the Father seeking to draw us into a closer relationship with him. She emphasizes how we can intentionally immerse ourselves in the goodness of God. Erica illustrates the concept of revival in the context of a loving, grace-centered Father. She shares two practical steps toward experiencing a powerful, life-changing revival and the closest possible relationship with the Lord. Repentance (not shame, but honesty) - Let go of the toxic behaviors, transgressions, and thoughts and turn away from them so you can turn toward Christ. Ask God what is keeping you from fully experiencing relationship with him. Reckoning among the leaders who slipped away from their purpose. Resist the onslaught of discouragement when sin in leadership is exposed, but instead recognize God's faithfulness when he purifies and holds leaders accountable. Wiggenhorn encourages listeners to begin intentionally seeking revival instead of growing numb or following a meaningless checklist of duties. She emphasizes the unique, individual ways we each connect with God. How do you connect with the Lord? In hiking? In prayer? In Bible study? Wiggenhorn notes our ways could be different, but we each need to invest time and attention into our relationship with the Lord. Erica shares her personal story of having struggled with scripture as her motivation for making the Bible accessible and relevant in the studies she writes. Erica is the founder of Every Life Ministries and is the author of both Bible studies and books. Her most recent Bible study is An Unexpected Revival which studies the book of Ezekiel. She is also the author of Letting God be Enough: Why Striving Keeps You Stuck & How Surrender Sets You Free - which focuses on the life of Moses. Take a few minutes to meditate on Acts 7:20-25 and then listen in to hear where God led Erica. God's very specific timing – in the life of Moses, the nation of Israel and in our lives. How God viewed Moses versus how Moses saw himself… and how this may be true for us as well.
