Our final look at the music of Star Trek puts us in the position of the show's music editors and composers. With so many classic episodes to get through, how did they stretch their music budget to cover an entire season? The music of Sol Kaplan, Joseph Mullendore, Gerald Fried and Fred Steiner is examined, and we also look at a series of clever music edits for tracked scores. Learn more about your ad choices. Synopsis “This highway leads to the shadowy tip of reality: you're on a through-route to the land of the different, the bizarre, the unexplainable... Go as far as you like on this road. Its limits are only those of mind itself. Ladies and Gentlemen, you're entering the wondrous dimension of imagination…” Next stop The DATEBOOK Zone. OK, all kidding aside, but “submitted for your approval” as Rod Serling would say, this is the COMPOSERS DATEBOOK for September 30th. I'm John Birge. On today's date in 1960, the second season of “The Twilight Zone,” — the legendary TV series created by Mr. Serling — began airing on CBS. For this, the producers added a new signature theme written by Marius Constant, a Romanian-born French composer. Constant had studied composition with Olivier Messiaen, Arthur Honegger, and Nadia Boulanger and had a very respectable career as a composer and teacher, but he's best known for his brief, but iconic, “Twilight Zone” theme. During its five-season run, that show also employed the talents of other famous composers, including Jerry Goldsmith, Leonard Rosenman, Fred Steiner, and Franz Waxman. And in case you're wondering who wrote the theme for the FIRST season of “The Twilight Zone,” well, that was another famous Hollywood composer by the name of Bernard Herrmann. Music Played in Today's Program Marius Constant (1925-2004): The Twilight Zone Main Theme (2nd version) –Orchestra; Joel McNeely, cond. (Varese-Sarabande VSD2-6087) Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975): The Twilight Zone Main Theme (1st version) –Orchestra; Joel McNeely, cond. (Varese-Sarabande VSD2-6087)

Enterprise Incidents with Scott & Steve

After crossing paths with an alien vessel, a mysterious woman materializes on the Enterprise, only to knock the entire crew unconscious. When everyone comes to, they are horrified to discover the body of Mr. Spock clinging to life in Sickbay after having his brain removed with remarkable surgical precision. With very little to go on except a faint ion trail, Captain Kirk pursues the would-be culprit across the galaxy to an unexplored star system, where he must choose between three possible planets to find Spock's brain and have it restored in time to save his life. After mounting a trailblazing letter-writing campaign to save "Star Trek" from cancellation, fans were duly rewarded (or punished?) for their efforts when "Spock's Brain" was chosen to launch the third season on September 20, 1968. Since then, it has gained the notorious reputation as being the worst "Star Trek" episode of all time. But is it really that bad? Is it worse than, say, "And the Children Shall Lead" or "The Way to Eden?" The fact is, "Spock's Brain" starts off strong and features a stellar score composed by Fred Steiner. It isn't until the third act that the proceedings take a ridiculous turn for the worst, but one thing's for sure: "Spock's Brain" is never dull, so for that reason alone, maybe it's not so bad after all. As radio audiences left for TV, Elliott Lewis continued to champion radio as a stronger dramatic medium. On Thursday January 1st, 1953, he and wife Cathy, debuted a new dramatic anthology program over CBS. It was On Stage. On Stage was geared for adults, showcasing an eclectic array of scripts across multiple genres. To get the show off the ground, the Lewis' tabbed some of the best writers in radio, like E Jack Neuman. Stories would be rooted in powerful male-female situations, with two characters of equal strength being a main goal. They used a mix of classic and original tales, cutting across all dramatic disciplines with mysteries, adventures, melodramas, satires, and comedy. Cathy was the perfect female foil, not just because she was Elliott's wife, but because she was a superb actress. By then the west-coast's character actors were like a family. A frequent co-star was Byron Kane. Ray Noble, Fred Steiner, and Lud Gluskin's music beautifully fit the production. Ross Murray and Berne Surrey's sound patterns were exceptional. The March 10th, 1954 episode was called “The Crusade of Stanley Finston.” On Stage came at a bittersweet time in Cathy and Elliott lives. Even as CBS referred to them as Mr. and Mrs. radio, their marriage of ten years was in trouble. Cathy and Elliott divorced in 1958. Elliott would soon marry another noted actress Mary Jane Croft. For more information on Elliott Lewis' career, tune into Breaking Walls episode 113.

Iffn' you missed the fabulousness that is Wendy Waldman - tada! So what if it took years - this was the perfect moment. On the eve of the high holy day, two Jewish girls being of service, as Wendy put it. Happy New Year! This was indeed a joyous celebration of life and art. What a glorious sit down with the singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, recording artist, Grammy nominee, and multi-platinum-selling hitmaker. Our conversation ran the gamut from indigenous agriculture, early COVID, childhood influences, Taj Mahal, for one, Fred Steiner, her wildly successful composer father, early days in LA, waiting on line behind Jackson for her moment in the spotlight, getting an ovation, touring first as a solo, becoming We the youngest member of the Warner Bros. brain trust - a group of artists who were known for their innovative approaches to music. The pack included Maria Muldaur, Randy Newman, Ry Cooder, Captain Beefheart, forming Bryndle with Karla Bonoff, Andrew Gold, and Kenny Edwards. Opening for Linda Ronstadt, moving to Nashville in the early days, how Fishing in the Dark came to be, and then Wendy played it. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Garth Brooks had huge hits with it, but there ain't nothing like hearing a song from its source. Passionate, generous, thoughtful Wendy, acknowledged and praised pretty much every artist who's crossed her path as a musician, songwriter, producer, human. She's about collaboration in all that she does, and it shows in her vast body of work. At my request, she sang her Wild Bird. Goosebumps. Wendy is one of those rare vocalists, like Laura Nyro (IMO), at the top of the top, who chills and thrills. And, she Saved The Best For Last, taking us out with her Grammy-nominated platinum hit for Vanessa Williams. Ain't nothing like the real thing- the source of the creation. I loved getting to know Wendy. Adore her even more now. I savored every second - thrilled to share this up close and personal with youes. Perry Mason! This episode is chock full-o SPOILERS, so if you haven't watched S:1 (WTF), then skip this one. We have a Special and a Shorty this week too! Elaine was singing the praises of the original Fred Steiner's Perry Mason theme song from early on. The closer we got to the end of season 1, the more she heard the original theme under the end credit music. In the finale, there was no mistake about it. Steiner's theme was loud and clear under the Terence Blanchard end credits. Blanchard also composed music for a number of Spike Lee movies, including Da 5 Bloods, which we talked about in Episode 11, BlacKKKlansman, and Bamboozled. Check out the original theme f and the end music from the HBO series finale on our page. Steiner also worked on TV shows like Star Trek (TOS), The Twilight Zone (TOS), and Gunsmoke. His film credits include The Night of the Living Dead (1968), Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi , and The Color Purple. Our S;2 predictions:Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys), Della Street (Juliet Rylance), and Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) will definitely be back (since they are all in place!!) and Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham) will be working for Hamilton Burger (Justin Kirk) who will move into the D.A, role. With Ennis is out of the way, Detective Holcomb (Eric Lange) may be back, and he may have it in for Paul Drake. D.A. Maynard Barnes is humiliated and pissed off af, but the last we heard from him, he still intended to run for mayor. So we might see the return of Stephen Root, although I think Travis would prefer he devote his time to Barry, and I hope he keeps showing up in Lincoln Project anti-Trump ads! Listen to this episode to hear us argue about the fate of Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany.)Season 2 may be The Case of the Velvet Claws, the first of the Perry Mason novels by Erle Stanley Gardner and S6: E22 of the original series.

"Code of Honor."   Considered by many to be one of the worst episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the first season episode "Code of Honor" portrays a planet of black people with many of the negative stereo types that have been associated with African culture on film and in literature. Fred Steiner, know to Star Trek fans as the composer of several original episodes, including "Charlie X," "What Are Little Girls Made Of?," "The Corbomite Maneuver," and "Balance of Terror," composed only one episode of The Next Generation. The score is filled with many familiar elements such as muted horns and stand up bass, however, the producers considered the music to be too "retro." In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by trombonist Lance Laster to discuss the episode and the music of the episode "Code of Honor." Melodic Treks: A Star Trek Music Podcast

Remembering Harlan Ellison's "The City on the Edge of Forever."   Heralded by many as the greatest episode, not only of the original Star Trek, but the whole franchise, "The City on the Edge of Forever" was written by science-fiction legend Harlan Ellison. While Star Trek fans know him best for this episode, he is well know for writing books and episodes of many other shows including The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and many more. Harlan Ellison died at his home in Los Angeles in the morning of June 28, 2018  In this episode of Melodic Treks, host Brandon-Shea Mutala takes a look at the score to the episode that many fans consider to be the best episode of the original Star Trek. While this episode primarily used library cues recorded earlier in the season, composer Fred Steiner did write approximately ten minutes of music, not all of which was used. Encounter at Farpoint. When Star Trek returned to television on September 28, 1987, no one knew for sure if this experiment was going to work. Could you really capture lightning in a bottle twice? While the ship still carried the same name, the cast was completely different—and the actors relatively unknown. What's more, the show was syndicated. That doesn't seem like a big deal now, but at the time it was unusual and not known as a recipe for success. In this episode of The Ready Room hosts Christopher Jones and Greg Harbin discuss "Encounter at Farpoint," which turned out to be the seed for all but 86 of the episodes and films in the world's most expansive science fiction franchise.  In our news segment we wish a happy birthday to J.J. Abrams, say our farewells to composer Fred Steiner, tune in to Michael Giacchino as he talks to Collider about scoring Star Trek, find out what Simon Pegg has to say about Star Trek and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, find out more about the new Abramsverse comic series as The Comic Book Resources interviews IDW Chief Creative Officer Chris Ryall, turn the pages of a new Star Trek Trivia Book, and discuss the trailer of William Shatner's new documentary "The Captains."
