Poem by Edgar Allan Poe
POPULARITY
Today's poem owes a strong debt to Cowper's “The Poplar Field” but also features a few stylistic echoes of Poe's “Annabel Lee,” all while achieving a (superior?) effect of its own. Happy reading. Send us a textWelcome to Episode 302 - Usher and OzBut before this podcast delves into the original version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, I like to delve into the life and works of two very different writers - Edgar Allan Poe and, the author of the Oz series - L. Frank Baum. Both were highly influential authors, with distinct styles and thematic concerns that reflect their unique literary goals. Poe is renowned for his exploration of melancholy, death, and the human psyche. His works often delve into the darker aspects of existence, reflecting his own life experiences. For instance, poems like "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee" convey a sense of tragic beauty, focusing on themes of loss and the haunting nature of memory. Poe's poetry is characterized by a rhythmic creation of beauty that often evokes feelings of despair and existential questioning. In contrast, Baum's Oz series is fundamentally optimistic, emphasizing self-discovery, friendship, and the realization of one's potential. The characters in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz embark on journeys that lead them to understand their inner strengths—courage, intelligence, and heart—rather than seeking external validation or treasures. Baum's world is one of wonder and adventure, aimed primarily at children but containing layers of social commentary about American society during his time.Thank you for experiencing Celebrate Poe.

Welcome to Celebrate Poe - episode 234 - Spinning Tops, Part TwoIn this episode, Celebrate Poe continues its examination of some of Poe's works against the background of Christopher Nolan's movie - Inception.First, it is important to remember that many of Poe's tales are narrated by characters with questionable sanity or motives. Stories like "The Tell-Tale Heart" leave readers unsure of what truly happened or if the narrator's perception can be trusted. The majority of this episode deals with observations regarding Poe and Inception, and ends with the topic of motifs - a good example is the symbolic use of water in Inception, and the sea in Poe's Annabel Lee.

Chris Semtner is an artist, author, lecturer & curator at The Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia. After a reading of Edgar Allan Poe's "A Tale of The Ragged Mountains," we hear part I of Chris' interview on Poe's life, opening on the most poetic topic in the world, the death of a beautiful woman. From there, we get biographical with Poe's upbringing: The Great Dismal Swamp; boyhood on the James River; Charlottesville's Ragged Mountains; the museum's courtyard garden; his wealthy foster family in Richmond; and southern dueling culture. Chris describes Poe's aspirations as a poet & the tension this caused with his foster father, followed by his brief stints at university & West Point. We end this to-be-continued episode on Poe's idea of "The Imp of the Perverse!" Stayed tuned for Part II...Check out The Poe Museum and Chris' books. “Shadows in the Sunset” consists of three novellas, the first being the story that gives the book its title, a story of a Summer lost and never forgotten. It follows a group of youths adventuring through the terrain of Big Sur. Moments are made and the truth of everything is felt through each person's expression. The second novella is “Underland (The Lost Children),” which follows the simple story of James and Summer, two “fools” just visiting the country fair. Lastly, “A House with No Progression,” which is about an artist named Ray and his girlfriend, Annabel Lee. They live together in isolation and have formed their own world within those walls. We begin to see signs of malice and realize that distinguishing reality from fiction is a difficult process for the artist. Jonathan Ray Hernandez Farris is an American artist of Colombian and Mexican descent. The passion for storytelling came from his mother, who always told him stories, and introduced him to a variety of films at a young age. The three novellas were written up and down the west coast, ranging from the forests of Oregon, to the beaches of Big Sur, and to his home in the San Fernando Valley. The influence for each story came from real life experiences, as well as the abstract thoughts that followed each one. Though fiction, the reality of each story breathes deeper truths concerning art, youthful pursuits, and freedoms in life. The popular image of Edgar Allan Poe is that of a sickly, gloomy, dour fellow obsessed with all things eerie and terrifying. Tragically, both for his personal life and because it reinforced this literary myth, Poe died on October 7, 1849, at just forty, in a painful, utterly bizarre manner that would not have been out of place in one of his own tales of terror. The literary effect of his untimely death was also compounded by the mystery of what happened to him, during the three days he went missing, before he was found delirious on the streets of Baltimore, wearing ill-fitting clothes that were not his own. There has been a staggering amount of speculation about the cause of his death, from rabies and syphilis to suicide, alcoholism, and even murder. But many of these theories are based on the caricature we have come to associate with Poe: the gloomy-eyed grandfather of Goth, hunched over a writing desk with a raven perched on one shoulder, drunkenly scribbling his masterpieces. By debunking the myths of how he lived, we intend to come closer to understanding the real Poe. Poe scholar Amy Branam Armiento will discuss select works by the master of the macabre. She will explain the temptations and dangers of linking Poe to his insane narrators and grief-stricken speakers as well as cover some examples of how he incorporated contemporary events into his poems and tales. Drawing upon her scholarship on Poe and women, Armiento will also elucidate the roles women have played in inspiring his writing, restoring his reputation, and sustaining his literary legacy for more than 200 years. Mark Dawidziak will discuss how the grotesque stereotypes about Poe have little basis in fact, and will undercut the many myths and misconceptions that have obscured the versatile, prolific and dedicated artist responsible for such classic works as "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Purloined Letter," "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee." Dawidziak also will examine how Poe's death, under haunting circumstances that reflect the mystery and horror genres that he took to new heights, has been one of the key factors keeping him alive in the 21st century as one of the best-read and most-recognized American writers. EP. 24: INTERVIEW WITH ANNABEL LEECharles interviews Annabel Lee, a force in the underground Los Angeles music scene, packing every venue she plays (The Echo, School Night, Satellite, Moroccan Lounge, Hotel Cafe and more). Her current album MOTHER'S HAMMER is available on all D.S.P's. “Alt-rock killer Queen Annabel Lee is rising from the L.A. underground scene biting down a knife as sharp as the lyrics to her song. She started out kicking it in the New England scene, where she would develop that manic, live-wire stage presence and energy that's characterized her every step of the way. Lee seems to go berserk and believable rumors say that she has the power to induce that savagery in the audience as well.“- LADYGUNN ANNABEL LEE is also the creator and curator of the Sweat Gala, an annual multi-media, fine art rock showcase and art auction in Los Angeles. Annabel was direct support for one of Amanda Palmer's tours, and has had songs featured on shows such as Mrs. Fletcher (HBO), Lucifer (Netflix), The Rookie (ABC), and in a national ad campaign for Casper Mattress. She was booted off of Songland by Leona Lewis and Ester Dean said, “you're an artist, don't give away your song. . . I love everything about you.” Annabel's debut album ‘MOTHER'S HAMMER' released in March of 2023. “The alt-pop frontrunner rises to the tempestuous challenge of the debut album, impressing with the diverse and compelling project. A provoking, consistent and complex album, Mother's Hammer is a more than worthy entry into the pop-rock stratosphere, and leaves Annabel Lee poised for a big future.” - Wonderland Magazine 0:00 Introduction 1:40 Mother's Hammer and the inspiration for the album 4:48 Recording with Justin and “All of my Ghosts” 9:30 The creative process and going with the flow 10:23 Annabel Lee's musical influences 11:27 Recording “Los Angeles” 13:45 Different mixes for Annabel Lee's song 14:10 Recording of “Alas I'm a Lady” music video 22:41 New music and songs in the future 24:20: Merch drop and beyond 28:04 Recording and inspiration for Annabel Lee 35:12 Performing Live 36:00 Floating and meditation 40:00 Playback of “Sarah, Sarah” 43:44 Recording of “Sarah, Sarah” 46:04 Recording of “Los Angeles” + new video 50:00 What's on repeat for Annabel Lee Follow Annabel on IG: @yourannabellee Website: https://www.annabelleemusic.com/

We had the pleasure of interviewing Annabel Lee over Zoom video!Los Angeles-based alt-rocker Annabel Lee shares her debut album Mother's Hammer!Written mostly while in quarantine in 2020, Mother's Hammer gave Annabel Lee time to reflect on preceding years which were some of the hardest of her life. After a cross-country move to pursue music, Lee found herself in challenging situations, from struggling with addiction and running out of money to ending an eight year relationship that left her without a place to live. It was from this profound hardship that an incredibly intimate, expansive body of work emerged. Diving into the subject matter, Lee shares, "Some of the stories on the album relate to being strung along by vampires in the industry. Being mistreated and taken advantage of. Fumbling around trying to fall in love and staying numb at every turn. Grieving the loss of friends, gone much too soon, and trying to see the silver linings but losing hope. Being 3,000 miles from anyone that actually knew me. It was a very dark and informative time."Over 11 compelling tracks, Annabel paints a realistic portrait of the human experience that never hesitates to confront even the most grim aspects of her life. Conversely, Annabel matches these darker emotions with joyous moments, shining a bright light on womanhood with gritty, fiery energy as she finds her own strength and begins to fully trust herself. The music meets her where she is, putting both her artistry and humanity on full display like never before. All songs were written by Annabel Lee, and produced and recorded by Justin Glasco. It was mixed by Ryan Lipman and mastered by Jett Galindo at Bakery Mastering. All vocals are also by Annabel Lee and instrumentation is by Lee and Glasco.Annabel got her start as the acoustic opener for hardcore shows around New England and since moving out to Los Angeles, has quickly built a die-hard fan base as she fills clubs around town including the famed School Night showcase, the Echo, Gold Diggers, the Satellite, and the Hotel Cafe. The alt-pop singer/songwriter Mothica also cites herself as a fan, where she posted a TikTok of herself front row at an Annabel Lee concert with the caption “I love it when women…” cut to Annabel thrashing onstage to her song “Ugly Son of a Bitch.”Mother's Hammer, the raw, ethereal debut album by Annabel Lee is available everywhere now!We want to hear from you! Poem – Annabelle Lee by Edgar Allen Poe, read by Basil Rathbone, put to music by Foxiekitten25 Song – Annabelle Lee by Fiddler's Green. To Earthward by Robert FrostLove at the lips was touch As sweet as I could bear; And once that seemed too much; I lived on air That crossed me from sweet things, The flow of—was it musk From hidden grapevine springs Downhill at dusk? I had the swirl and ache From sprays of honeysuckle That when they're gathered shake Dew on the knuckle. I craved strong sweets, but those Seemed strong when I was young; The petal of the rose It was that stung. Now no joy but lacks salt, That is not dashed with pain And weariness and fault; I crave the stain Of tears, the aftermark Of almost too much love, The sweet of bitter bark And burning clove. When stiff and sore and scarred I take away my hand From leaning on it hard In grass and sand, The hurt is not enough: I long for weight and strength To feel the earth as rough To all my length. Annabel Lee By Edgar Allan Poe It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of Annabel Lee; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. I was a child and she was a child, In this kingdom by the sea, But we loved with a love that was more than love— I and my Annabel Lee— With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven Coveted her and me. And this was the reason that, long ago, In this kingdom by the sea, A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling My beautiful Annabel Lee; So that her highborn kinsmen came And bore her away from me, To shut her up in a sepulchre In this kingdom by the sea. The angels, not half so happy in Heaven, Went envying her and me— Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know, In this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee. But our love it was stronger by far than the love Of those who were older than we— Of many far wiser than we— And neither the angels in Heaven above Nor the demons down under the sea Can ever dissever my soul from the soul Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes Of the beautiful Annabel Lee; And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea— In her tomb by the sounding sea.
