Today I present part two of my “In Memoriam” series, honoring treasured singers who have recently died. This week I focus on male singers, covering the gamut from opera singers (Dominic Cossa, Lando Bartolini, Eric Tappy, Steve Davislim, Siegfried Lorenz) to pop stars (James Darren, Kris Kristofferson); early music singers (Howard Crook) to Broadway icons (Ken Page, Gavin Creel). As with last week's episode, each of these singers left an indelible mark in their respective musical field(s) and each loss is felt profoundly, especially those like Steve Davislim and Gavin Creel, whose time to leave this earth came much too soon. Musically speaking this is a particularly eclectic episode, featuring everything from Monteverdi and Delalande, to country western standards. Other singers heard in the episode include André de Shields and Ute Gfrerer, as well as other artists who died over the course of the last year, including Robert Hale, Norman Shetler, Rachel Yakar, and Sinéad O'Connor. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. Phil shares a touching tale of being reunited with a very famous old friend. He also shares personal memories about the late acting and singing star James Darren, and the NBA great Alvin Attles. And although he died almost two months ago, Dean and Phil finally take the time to offer a heartfelt remembrance of beloved fitness guru Richard Simmons. An email from friend of the show Maurice Terenzio leads to re-visiting the discussion Dean and Phil had a couple weeks back about game show icon Peter Marshall, (the email is a GOOD one!). Another email from a fan who hosts his very own medical show leads to a very thoughtful and interesting conversation as Dean and Phil consider an invitation to appear on this man's show and discuss Dean's ongoing interest in the paranormal. Finally, Phil brings back the "vintage movie ad" game, and quizzes Dean about three cinematic releases from September of 1987!

It is with great sadness that I post this episode today. James Darren was a multi-talented actor and singer. From his iconic roles as Moondoggie in the Gidget films of the 60's to his starring roles in “The Guns of Navarone" and “T.J. Hooker,” along with his recurring role as Vic Fontaine in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” he wowed audiences around the world. Plus, with his Grammy nominated hit “Goodbye Cruel World,” he could do it all. And besides appearing on “Between the Lines” he was also a long-time friend. He passed this morning leaving millions of adoring fans with heartbreak. My wife and I are amongst them. In this episode we share so much of his kindness and talent that it should only bring back beautiful memories of this beautiful man.Support the show

Here at The Substance we love engaging with thoughtful art and artists as they are able to get at truth in a way other mediums just are not capable, and among the various forms of art, movies are probably our favorite. That is why we are so delighted to share this exciting first with you all: on this episode we have the pleasure of being joined by a well established actor who recently made his directorial debut, John Carroll Lynch! John's career as an actor spans over three decades and he has worked with some incredible directors in that time. Folks like Martin Scorsese (right off the bat we get a GREAT Shutter Island story), David Fincher, Joel and Ethan Coen, Clint Eastwood, John Woo, Pablo Larraín, Albert Brooks, Karyn Kusama, Tony Scott, and even Tom Hanks on HBO's From the Earth to the Moon. And a few years ago, he took all those experiences and channeled them into a stunning directorial debut, 2017's Lucky. Lucky tells the story of a 90-year-old atheist living in small desert town who goes on a bit of a spiritual journey when he is forced to confront his mortality after he experiences a fall. The titular character Lucky is played beautifully by veteran character actor Harry Dean Stanton. It's a role that is infused with so many essential and biographical elements from Harry's own life but it very much stands on its own if you are unfamiliar with his life and career. The town is filled with wonderful actors, many of whom are longtime friends of HDS. People like David Lynch, Ron Livingston, Ed Begley Jr., Tom Skerritt (Harry's co-star in the sci-fi masterpiece and previous SC episode Alien), Barry Shabaka Henley, James Darren, Beth Grant, and more! The movie is currently streaming on Hoopla so support your local library and check it out! You can also rent it on any major platform. And if you like it even half as much as we do, be sure to tell your friends about it! DARLENE LOVE: The Voice Behind the Songs

A Breath of Fresh Air

Rolling Stone Magazine caled Darlene Love “one of the greatest singers of all time” but perhaps Paul Shaffer says it even more concisely: “Darlene Love is Rock N' Roll!” – which was made official when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Bette Midler, a great fan of her work, in 2011. She was one of Phil Spector's hand-picked early '60's girl group singers and sang some lead vocals for the Crystals, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans. After turbulent times with Spector, Darlene also had hits under her own name. The oldest of five children born in LA, Darlene's father was a minister and ran a church in Texas. Darlene began singing at his church to the delight of the congregation. While attending high school in San Antonio, Darlene began joining glee clubs and a group called the Wailers that sang at school assemblies. In 1956 the family moved back to Los Angeles. Shortly after her sixteenth birthday Darlene began singing in the church choir. It was during a choir practice that her voice caught the attention of the choir director. One day a girl that Darlene knew from church, asked her to sing at her wedding. What she didn't know was that the wedding was also an audition: Delores' bridal party included her friends Gloria Jones, Fanita Barrett, and Annette and Nanette Williams, who had a singing group called the Blossoms. They were looking to replace Annette who was pregnant. Darlene was asked to sing with the Blossoms. Her parents at first refused to let her, but after meeting the Blossoms they relented. She started singing with The Blossoms in 1958. They recorded as a quartet and then a trio. They also did backup singing supporting Bobby "Boris" Pickett ("Monster Mash"), James Darren ("Goodbye Cruel World), Bobby Day ("Rockin' Robin") and many others. Love was brought to Phil Spector's attention when he was looking for a lead singer for "He's a Rebel." which was to be released under the Crystal's name. When Darlene was asked if she knew about this she said "So What? The man just paid me triple scale."  She figured that it was a cute song, but it was probably going nowhere. Love went on to record six Philles singles under her own name, including "Wait Til My Bobby Gets Home","(Today I Met) The Boy I'm Going To Marry", " and "A Fine Fine Bo”). She also appeared on Spector's Christmas Album. Love continued to sing with the Blossoms through the 60s. They were regulars on Shindig and toured with Elvis Presley in the early 70s. Love sang back-up for Dionne Warwick for ten years beginning in 1971 and later backing Aretha Franklin. In the ‘80s Darlene branched out into acting appearing in the Lethal Weapon films and appearing in the Tony nominated 1985 the Broadway musical Leader of the Pack based on the songs of Ellie Greenwich. She also recorded two solo albums.  In 1997 a jury awarded her in excess of $263,000 for back royalties from Phil Spector. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Today Darlene Love is back on the charts with a new version of her Christmas song thanks to her friend Cher. This week she joins us to share the story of her incredible journey. For more information about Darlene Love, head to her website https://darleneloveworld.com/ and pick yourself up a copy of her book 'My Name is Love' where Darlene shares many stories including the wild parties Tom Jones used to throw and her love affair with Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers. It's the dishy and dramatic story of a woman who had it all, lost it all, but never, ever refused to give up. If you'd like to request a guest or if you have any comments or feedback for me, please get in touch through my website https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au I know you're going to LOVE the story of Darlene Love this week.

On Episode 144 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis continues and concludes a celebration the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA! This show is an American science fiction media franchise created by Glen A. Larson. It began with the original television series in 1978, and was followed by a short-run sequel series (Galactica 1980), a line of book adaptations, original novels, comic books, a board game, video games and a reboot series. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor with an exclusive interview is the composer and conductor of the score for BSG, STU PHILLIPS! Stu and Curtis had a great discussion about the music score for BSG, and the many other aspects of his long career. With Colpix Records, Stu produced high-charting hits for James Darren, Nina Simone, The Skyliners, Shelley Fabares, and The Monkees. He also furnished music for Columbia's television series, including The Donna Reed Show (with Fabares) and The Monkees. In the mid-1960s, he worked for Capitol Records and created, produced and arranged for the easy listening studio orchestra the Hollyridge Strings. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Phillips continued scoring films and television series including music for the films Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Seven Minutes (1971) and the television series Get Christie Love!. During this time, he scored music for the television series Switch, McCloud, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, Quincy M.E. and (of course) Battlestar Galactica.
