Taylor analyzes the complete slate of Matchday 8 fixtures from the Champions League group phase. This epic conclusion featured sixteen fixtures in which at least one club had something to play for: a top-8 finish, a seeded playoff spot, or an unseeded playoff spot. As eighteen clubs had mathematically secured a top-24 finish after Matchday 7, nine clubs competed for the remaining six playoff spots, including PSV, Club Brugge, Benfica, PSG, Sporting, Stuttgart, Manchester City, Dinamo Zagreb, and Shakhtar Donetsk. Additionally, only Liverpool and Barcelona had mathematically secured top-8 finishes with an automatic bye to the round of 16, which meant that every club behind them fought heroically to secure safe passage to the last 16. And, well, then there was Sturm Graz, Leipzig, Young Boys, and Crvena Zvezda, who essentially played meaningless friendlies with absolutely nothing at stake. There was certainly no shortage of drama, delight, and despair. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - after the first ever 'final matchday' of the new League Stage, which saw every single game taking place at the same time. We start with a look at Manchester City's Great Escape - coming back from 1-0 down (and surefire elimination) to win 3-1 against Club Brugge, and sneak into the Playoff round in incredibly dramatic fashion at the Etihad. Then we work our way through all the other games, including an end-to-end encounter as Aston Villa beat Celtic 4-2, PSG's blistering 4-1 demolition of Stuttgart, and a 2-2 thriller between Barcelona and Atalanta that might well have been the game of the night. In Part Two, there's a roundup of all the rest of the action - Ethan Nwaneri's Saka impression as Arsenal saw off Girona, PSV stunning a heavily-rotated Liverpool in Eindhoven, routine wins for Bayern and Real Madrid, Dinamo Zagreb's brave win over 10-man Milan that wasn't quite enough, and Sporting's squeaky point that saw them progress, as well as big wins for Inter, Benfica, Leverkusen, Lille, and Atletico. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Nick and Taylor return just in time to provide comprehensive analyses of Matchday 7 in the Champions League with just days to go before the final League Phase matchday! Our European football experts explain what went wrong for Benfica and Manchester City, how Feyenoord somehow scored three on a dominant Bayern side, and how Atletico Madrid adapted to overturn seemingly impossible odds. Matchday 7 featured 2/8 clubs securing automatic round of 16 placements, 18/24 total clubs securing the playoff round at minimum, and 9/12 clubs becoming mathematically eliminated from reaching the playoff round. As Matchday 8 draws near, Nick and Taylor highlight the must-see matches, and provide the scenarios that certain clubs face in what promises to be an electric, chaotic final day. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - after another breathless week in the UCL that saw chaos reign across both days. We start with Wednesday's action, opening with a discussion of PSG's impressive comeback 4-2 win over Manchester City, which was a much needed European reprieve for Luis Enrique, and another difficult night for Pep Guardiola's charges, who now find themselves outside the qualification spots going into the final matchday. Feyenoord hammered Bayern 3-0 despite Vincent Kompany's men having nearly 80% of possession and 26 shots, and we look at why Bayern looked so lethargic in Rotterdam; as well as examining Arsenal's routine dismantling of Dinamo Zagreb at the Emirates; and the show that Real Madrid put on to beat RB Salzburg 5-1 in fine style at the Bernabeu. There's a roundup of all the rest of Wednesday's football too - Leipzig getting their first UCL win this season against struggling Sporting, Shakhtar keeping their faint hopes alive with a win over surprise package Brest, Celtic finally getting over the line and securing qualification with a 1-0 victory against Young Boys; and wins for both Inter and Milan to push themselves firmly back into Top Eight contention. Then in Part Two, we're onto Tuesday's action, which begins with one of the craziest games you'll see all season - as Barcelona came from two goals down to win 5-4 at Benfica, in a game that had absolutely everything - madness, meltdowns, majesty, and all the rest. We talk a relatively routine win for Liverpool over Lille that maintained the Reds' perfect record in this competition and kept them top of the table; a vintage Atleti Dark Arts performance which saw them come from a goal and a man down to beat Leverkusen at a fizzing Metropolitano; and Villa's 1-0 loss to Monaco that saw them slip out of the Top Eight and miss a golden chance to keep themselves in the best shape to avoid the playoff round.Rounding things up, we discuss Bologna's win over Borussia Dortmund in front of an amazing display at the Renato Dall'Ara that saw Nuri Sahin lose his job as Dortmund manager, PSV crawling over the line in the snow in Belgrade as they beat Crvena Zvezda 3-2, five-star Atalanta's excellent display against hapless Sturm Graz, Stuttgart's resurgence as they beat Slovan Bratislava, and another draw for Juve - as they were held 0-0 in Bruges. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Welcome to the Always Bayern Chelsea show for another episode breaking down the two midweek European matches. Bayern beat Shakhtar 5-1 in the Champions League and Chelsea beat Astana 3-1 in the Conference League. We kick off this episode by discussing Bayern Munich's comprehensive UCL victory over Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1. We break down lineups, coaching tactics, individual player performances, and all of the key moments of the match. Things looked dicey for Bayern early with the Ukrainian side scoring the opening goal of the match. Bayern answered quickly with a goal from Konrad Laimer assisted by Michael Olise. Thomas Muller scored right before halftime assisted by Jamal Musiala off of a steal from Leroy Sane. Michael Olise scored 2 more goals and Jamal Musiala got his goal as well. We hand out our match awards for this one and we close out our Bayern Munich discussion by looking at where they go from hear and how Vincent Kompany will deal with their injury crisis. Next up for the Bavarians is Mainz in the Bundesliga. We turn things over to Chelsea by breaking down their nice 3-1 victory over Astana in the UEFA Conference League. We break down the tactics, lineups, scoring and key moments, as well as individual player performances before handing out match awards. Enzo Maresca's system continues to work with a mixture of B squad & academy players plus Pedro Neto who got an assist in this outing. Marc Guiu had a goal or two and Renato Veiga scored off of a corner assisted by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Chelsea now looks ahead to Brentford in the English Premiere League. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your midnight feast of Champions League content - after another breathless week in the UCL that saw thrills, spills, and everything in between. We start with Wednesday's action, opening with yet another tough night for Pep Guardiola, whose City side were pulled apart by Juventus in transition in the second half, and who now has one win in his last ten games in all competitions. Then it's on to Dortmund, where a breathless second half between BVB and Barcelona saw the Catalans come out as 3-2 winners, but there was plenty of positives to take from both sides of this one; and to the Emirates, where Arsenal saw off Monaco 3-0 in the Arsene Wenger Trophy, and did so without scoring from a corner! There's a roundup of all the rest of Wednesday's football too - Atletico's routine win over whipping boys Slovan Bratislava; Milan squeaking past Crvena Zvezda at San Siro; Feyenoord's topsy-turvy 4-2 win over a battling Sparta Prague; Stuttgart hammering Young Boys 5-1; Lille making it hard for themselves but finally besting Sturm Graz 3-2; and Benfica's frustration at drawing 0-0 with winless Bologna. Then in Part Two, we're onto Tuesday's action, which begins with a flip to Real Madrid, who answered some of their critics with a big 3-2 win in Bergamo against Atalanta - where Kylian Mbappé looked far more like himself...and then promptly went off injured. We talk a bit of a strange game between Leverkusen and Inter, where both showed signs of their best, but which Leverkusen ultimately won by channelling last year's 'Alonso-time' late dramatics; before heading over to Leipzig to discuss Aston Villa's best performance in a while which saw them past Leipzig - who are now officially out of the race for qualification. Rounding things up, we discuss some absolutely mesmerising footwork from Michael Olise as Bayern dismantled Shakhtar in Gelsenkirchen; Liverpool staying perfect with an imperfect performance at Girona; PSG getting back to winning ways against hapless RB Salzburg; Sporting's continued struggles as they fell to Club Brugge; Brest's swashbuckling smash-and-grab against PSV; and Celtic's credible display at the Maksimir as they drew with Dinamo Zagreb. It's Ranks! Nick returns to the show to help break down a magnificent Matchday 5 in the Champions League. On Tuesday, Manchester City conceded three late goals to blow a 3-0 lead at home, Sporting found it difficult to adjust following their manager's departure, and Brest finally tasted defeat on a historic night for Robert Lewandoski. And on Wednesday, Madrid suffered their third-straight defeat in the competition to a perfect Liverpool, Monaco and Shakhtar blew leads late, and Crvena Zvezda absolutely smashed Stuttgart in embarrassing fashion. Our European experts highlight all 18 matches, complete with statistical analyses, tactical breakdowns, schedule previews, and some exquisite trolling, as Matchday 5 also included several blowouts. Only three Matchdays to go with the race for top eight and the playoff positions heating up!
Welcome to the Always Bayern Chelsea show for the 52nd addition of the program. In this one we breakdown Bayern Munich's bizarre 0-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal Round of 16 and Chelsea's awesome 5-1 thrashing of Southhampton in the English Premiere League. We kick off the show by reviewing another early and gut-wrenching German Cup loss for the Bavarians. We discuss everything from Vincent Kompany and Xabi Alonso's coaching tactics, lineups, player performances, officiating, and yes match highlights including Manuel Neuer's perplexing ill-timed challenge and subsequent red card that altered the match as well as Bayern's spirited effort to claw their way back into the match. We even try to hand out weak match awards for this one. The lone goal of the match came from Leverkusen's Nathan Tella with an assist from Alejandro Grimaldo. So where does Bayern go from here? First things first, a battle with Heidenheim on 12/7 and then to fae off against Shakhtar in the Champions League on 12/10. We brighten up the mood by breaking down Chelsea crushing Southhampton 5-1. We look into Enzo Maresca's coaching tactics, lineups, player performances, and all the highlights from the match. As always we award match awards for this one as well. Chelsea's goals were scored by Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, and Jadon Sancho. Assists were dished out by Enzo Fernandez, Noni, Joao Felix, Cristo, and Malo Gusto. Chelsea looks to carry this moment ahead to their matches against Tottenham in the EPL and Astana in the Conference league. Subscribe to the YouTube channel for more! Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your midnight feast of Champions League content - after an incredible week in the Champions League that saw Champions crumble, new powers rising, goals galore & some shock results. We start with Wednesday's action, opening with the breathless end to things in Eindhoven - where the USMNT's Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi fired up an incredible late comeback that saw their side overcome Shakhtar Donetsk at the death. Then it's on to Anfield, where Liverpool made light work of an out-of-sorts Madrid, lacking Vinicius and a few others. We discuss Mbappe's struggles, how Liverpool maintained perfect control, the midfield 'battle' and Conor Bradley's breakout performance. We also discuss a calamitous own goal from Cameron Carter-Vickers at Celtic Park, rescued by a brilliant Daezen Maeda strike at the other end; the drama at the finale of Aston Villa's 0-0 draw with Juventus; a brilliant game between two excellent sides in Benfica and Monaco; Jamie Gittens' star turn in Dortmund's impressive win over Dinamo Zagreb; a stunning Champions League performance from Lille's Ngal'ayel Mukau; and shock results in the early kickoffs as Sturm Graz beat Girona and Crvena Zvezda hammered Stuttgart in Belgrade. Then in Part Two, we're onto Tuesday's action, which begins witha deep dive into City's unthinkable collapse against Feyenoord which put all the worst fears of City fans into a stark perspective - this is real and it's happening. What next for Pep's men, and could they possibly turn it round in the most unlikely of locations - Anfield? We talk a bit of a strange blockbuster game between Bayern Munich and PSG and where both teams are right now, before heading over to Lisbon to discuss Arsenal's demolition of Sporting, which was one of the best performances we've seen under Mikel Arteta as all the parts finally click into place for the Gunners. Jack installs Inter as his favourites to win the competition following their incredibly mature win over struggling RB Leipzig; we look at a big night for Robert Lewandowski as Barcelona beat Brest 3-0; discuss Atalanta's 6-1 mauling of Young Boys and insist you don't write them off; ponder why Milan keep making things so hard for themselves, even in a 3-2 win in Bratislava; and end with quick discussions on hammerings handed out by both Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid. Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your midnight feast of Champions League content - after one of the wildest weeks we have seen in the competition in recent times. We start for a change, with Tuesday's games, opening with Sporting's huge 4-1 win over Manchester City - a parting gift from Ruben Amorim to the Jose Alvalade as City were cut open in transition again. Was it as bad as it looked? Maybe not, but the blue half of Manchester have some valid concerns, whilst the red half are ready to welcome their new manager with open arms. Then it's on to Anfield, where Liverpool maintained their perfect record in the competition with a 4-0 win over Xabi Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen thanks to a Luis Diaz hat trick, and some more excellent half-time tweaks from Arne Slot, who got it right yet again. Real Madrid were stunned at home by Milan, where Paulo Fonseca's use of Rafael Leão was next to perfect, and the questions about how Kylian Mbappé has unbalanced this team remain burning bright. Can Carlo Ancelotti turn this around or are the obvious holes in the defensive line too big to fill with superstars alone? We round up the rest too: Celtic re-announced themselves in the competition with a big win at home to Leipzig, BVB dug out another win in their mini-resurgence, Malik Tillman starred as PSV beat Girona 4-0, Lille and Juventus shared the spoils in France, Monaco stayed hot with a late win in Bologna, and Dinamo Zagreb smashed four past competition whipping boys Slovan Bratislava. Then in Part Two, we're onto Wednesday's action, which begins with Inter's narrow win over Arsenal that cemented them as genuine favourites and continued to pile the questions on Mikel Arteta about how to get the best out of this (admittedly depleted) Gunners side. Also up for discussion is PSG's devastating late loss to Atletico Madrid and how the Parisiens just seem to lack confidence the moment anything goes against them, despite a bright start here; and Aston Villa's fatigued 1-0 loss to Club Brugge that will be headlined by a weird penalty call, but in reality was a pretty reasonable result - Villa were outplayed in Belgium. We finish with a roundup of the rest of the Tuesday games - Barcelona hitting five in Belgrade against Crvena Zvezda as their front three continues to shine; Bayern's hard-fought but well-deserved win over Benfica; another clean sheet for Atalanta as they won 2-0 in Stuttgart; a first win for RB Salzburg as they shocked Feyenoord at De Kuip; Brest's third win from four as the Pirates set sail for Prague and plundered more points against Sparta; and Shakhtar Donetsk's Sudakov-inspired victory over Young Boys. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your midnight feast of Champions League content after the main meal was served up on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights by the third round of our new 36-team competition. We start with Tuesday's games, opening with Barcelona's 4-1 dismantling of Bayern Munich that saw them lay recent demons to rest against their most regular scourge, the naivety of some of what Bayern did both offensively and defensively, and how Raphinha's promotion to the captain's armband in Catalunya has him cooking on Ballon d'Or contender form. Then it's on to Leipzig, where Liverpool made it 11 wins from 12 with a 1-0 victory against one of the teams from Jurgen Klopp's new fiefdom, and a quick look at City's 5-0 win over Sparta Prague which saw Erling Haaland score one of the most acrobatic goals you'll ever see in your life. We round up the rest of Wednesday's action too, peeking at Leverkusen's 1-1 draw with high-flying Brest, Celtic's imperious defensive performance against previously free-scoring Atalanta, Feyenoord ending Benfica's year-long unbeaten run at the Estadio da Luz, Lille stunning a Madrid side for the second time in two matchdays - this time Atleti at the Wanda, Inter's impact substitutes getting the job done for them against Young Boys, and hapless Salzburg's 2-0 loss to a very punchy Dinamo Zagreb side. Then in Part Two, we're onto Tuesday's action, which begins with the other side of La Liga's Clasico - Real Madrid's 5-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund which centred around the identity of these two clubs, and how this script could have been written by almost anyone who knows them. We touch on Vinicius Jr's incredible hat-trick, and the decisions that BVB manager Nuri Sahin made which took the game away from what could have been a famous night of revenge for his side. We head over to Birmingham next to discuss just what to make of Unai Emery's Aston Villa and their 2-0 win over Bologna that installed them at the top of the Champions League table, and down to North London to discuss a 1-0 win for the Arsenal that was a little bit uncomfortable at times, but dearly needed by Mikel Arteta's side to just quieten the noise and get themselves back on the right track. We finish with a roundup of the rest of the Tuesday games - Milan's 3-1 win over Club Brugge that included an Olympic Goal from the irrepressible Christian Pulisic, Stuttgart's well-deserved 1-0 win over Juventus which saw the Bianconeri's unbeaten start under Thiago Motta derailed, PSG's profligacy in a 1-1 draw against PSV, Monaco's 5-1 thumping of Crvena Zvezda which reaffirmed their credentials as a team to be reckoned with, Girona's first ever Champions League win as they beat Slovan Bratislava 2-0, and Sporting's 2-0 win over Sturm Graz which saw another goal and an assist for Viktor Gyokeres. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?

Arsenal, in the Champions League, secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates! While we walked away with maximum points, the overall style and performance felt like a downer. Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, the Gunners struggled to find that clinical edge in front of goal. Martinelli was electric, constantly opening up Shakhtar's defense with his pace, while Havertz showed his versatility and intelligence throughout the match. And let's not forget David Raya, who made some key saves to maintain our clean sheet. There were moments of promise, but we need to address the inconsistencies in our play. The win keeps us on track in the Champions League, but there are lessons to be learned moving forward. I talked more about my standout players and discuss some areas where we need improvement. I encourage you all to tune in and share your thoughts on the match! We keep the momentum going as we look ahead to the next big one. Enjoy this byte-sized episode and share it with your friends! C'mon Arsenal!

Adam, Andrew and Rey return to mull over a very depressing month of Ukrainian football. Are such results and performances the new normal? What's the solution? Is it simply just acceptance? This week, regular football travel companion Michael Jaworskyj joins the guys to offer his takes on some of the rather underwhelming performances he's seen on TV and live in the flesh. Mike has recently co-launched a new football podcast of his own called Futbol Kultura which focuses on football culture in the wider Eastern European space. The guys chat: EUROPE Dynamo's poor start and defensive problems What is being dead on their feet down to? The inability to adapt to differences between weakness of UPL and that of Europa Predictability Is Vanat the CF Dynamo truly need in European competition? Shakhtar with their own issues at both sides of the pitch... Zero in attack, inconsistent in defence Are Pusic's days numbered? Pusic's dislike of statistics Bad recruitment? UPL Oleksandriya continuing their unbeaten start Hutsulyak, Nazarenko - the new wave Yarmolenko and Konoplyanka Shakhtar way off Dynamo already… Kryvbas - are they one season wonders? Obolon and their new manager Persha and Druha recap too THE NATIONAL TEAM Ukraine… Opponents are high flying Georgia and Czechia (both at home – Poznan and Wroclaw) Sydorchuk and Yarmolenko left out Is it the right decision? Is Yarmo's influence in dressing room that essential? So many injuries... Will new leaders stand up and ask to be counted? How will Rebrov approach these matches? Preparing for WCQ or the NL at hand? Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your midnight feast of Champions League content after the main meal was served up on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights by the new 36-team competition. We start with Tueday's games, opening on Aston Villa's already-famous win over Bayern Munich, where Unai Emery hurt Bayern again, and we saw a repeat scoreline of the 1982 European Cup final, only this time with Jhon Duran the man of the moment. Then we discuss losses for both of the Madrid sides - Real Madrid to Lille for their first loss in 36 games, and Atleti's dismemberment at the hands of a newly-resurgent Benfica. Next, it's to Anfield to look at Liverpool's 8th win in 9 games under Arne Slot - this time a 2-0 win over a stubborn Bologna, and then on to Germany, where 10-man Juventus proved their mettle with a 3-2 comeback win in Leipzig. We round up the rest of Tuesday's action by peeking at Dinamo Zagreb's 2-2 draw with Monaco, Christos Tzolis' stunner leading Club Brugge to a 1-0 win over Sturm Graz, an absolutely ludicrous encounter between Girona and Feyenoord that ended 3-2 to the visitors, and Atalanta's comfortable win over Shakhtar Donetsk. Then in Part Two, we're onto Tuesday's action, which begins with a look at Arsenal's weirdly comfortable 2-0 win over a very pedestrian PSG at the Emirates, then onto Dortmund's 7-1 dismantling of Celtic and their early optimism in the competition, Leverkusen's hard-nosed 1-0 win over AC Milan at the BayArena, and Barcelona's almost picture-perfect night as they beat Young Boys 5-0 in Catalunya. We finish with a roundup of the rest of the Tuesday games - Manchester City going to Slovakia and strolling to a 4-0 win over Slovan Bratislava that saw their academy players come to the fore, a brilliant game between the Dutch and Portuguese Champions as PSV and Sporting played out a 1-1 draw, Brest's brilliant start continuing with a 4-0 thrashing of Salzburg away from home, Inter's rout of Crvena Zvezda in Milan, and a hard-fought draw between Stuttgart and Sparta Prague.

Our very own Andy Brassell has written another book! Called ‘We Play On', it's all about Shakhtar Donetsk's remarkable modern history – from being cast out of their original home in Donbas in 2014, to being bombed out of Ukraine altogether in 2022.Once flippantly dubbed ‘The Brazilian Colony' for their history of bringing through Brazilian stars, Shakhtar is now a club for all of Ukraine. They are the country's shining light on the European stage and a reminder of football's power to provide hope in the darkest times. Dotun sits down with Andy to ask him more about Shakhtar's story and his experience of telling it.You can buy a copy of ‘We Play On' from Hachette here or find it in all good book shops!Ask us a question on Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, and email us here: otc@footballramble.com.For ad-free shows, head over to our Patreon and subscribe: patreon.com/footballramble.***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Host Ricky Sacks is joined by returning guests in Entertainments' Host & Compere Richard Cracknell along with British Actors Ricky J Norwood and Darren Hartman as we review Harry Kane scoring four goals as Tottenham Hotspur beat Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 in their penultimate pre-season friendly before the start of the Premier League. The match was new boss Postecoglou's first game in charge in front of his own supporters at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Spurs' two previous friendlies having taken place during a tour of Asia and it will have left the Australian keener than ever to retain the services of Kane, who produced a virtuoso performance in what Spurs fans will hope was not a farewell with a flourish. The striker has featured in all three Spurs friendlies this summer and played more than 80 minutes on Sunday, coming off just after his fourth goal and prompting loud 'we want you to stay' chants from supporters. He opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a foul on James Maddison who - after Shakhtar levelled - set up Kane's second with a pinpoint cross that the England skipper headed in from close range. The link-up between the international team-mates promises much, should Kane stay, but his hat-trick strike came from a more familiar source as he tucked away Dejan Kulusevski's defence-splitting ball.
