Welcome to Issue 269 of Critical Encounters, a podcast about Marvel Champions, a Living Card Game by Fantasy Flight Games. Here we take a good look at that most critical piece of the game, the Encounter Sets. We'll discuss those poorly understood characters, unfairly labeled Villains, and their various plans to shape humanity and benefit the planet, as well as those so-called heroes intent on thwarting them. In this very speical Mother's Day Secert Dossier Issue we take a look at a bunch of moms we have in the game along with the Omega Level Momster - Jean Grey. Madelyne Pryor has quite the complicated backstory in Marvel Comics, and it's fascinating to see how X-Men '97 chose to shorten and adapt her story. A lot of the changes really work, but the whole episode moves so damn fast that Maddy and Ryan can only conclude that this should have been a two-parter. The Goblin Queen deserved more time to cook!! Perhaps the real star of this episode is Morph, whose relationship with Wolverine has gotten very emotionally confusing for seemingly both of them. Wow! X-Men Spotlight: Madelyne Pryor Next week's episode: "Motendo/Lifedeath Part 1" X-Men '97 E-mail us your feedback at themutantages@gmail.com or follow us on social media at TheMutantAges, MIDImyers and RyanPagella. I'm particularly excited about this episode, because I'm taking my first real steps into the new segments I have planned, so please give any feedback you have! I go through descriptions from official reference sources as well as meanings gathered in my own study notes, as well as other depiction and variation of the Fool, a tiny bit of history of the card, and of course, the Natasha Yglesias Anime Tarot archetypes, still an excellent and fun teaching tool! And to add some spice, I also go into some light pop culture references to the Fool card that can be found, too! Our Manga segment 0:29:42 focuses mostly on our new Manga of the Week: Witch Watch, by Kenta Shinohara! J'adore! And I hope you enjoy it, too. I have a little Manga News 0:38:57 that I'm still working on finding my footing for the weekly episodes, so bear with me as I settle on a design I like, and let me know what you want more of. The Comic Books segment 0:44:26 features what's new in shops this week, with a few golden keys to be sure to grab. Previous weeks' Recent Reads and Event catch-up 0:53:47 features summary of Dark Web: Finale, Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #1; Lazarus Planet: Legends Reborn, DC's Harley Quinn's Romances, DC Power: A Celebration, Purgatori Must Die! #2, and All Against All #1 & 2, which might be my favorite from the bunch. In TV/Movies 01:11:38, we talk New and Noteworthy (including the illustrious Cunk on Earth and the surprising Shrinking); in Announcements 01:15:46 there's the now-usual DCU nonsense, and the brand new announcement of Amazon's live-action Spider-Man Noir show project! For Anime 01:21:26, there's a bit of news on Demon Slayer season 3 before my own show updates, as I continue to search for a new hidden gem to take me by storm. As for Current Shows 01:25:54, I only have a few things to say on the Bad Batch season 2 so far, but that *REDACTED* was WILD and I want MORE Star Wars like THAT! That's all folks! Have a happy Valentine's/Lupercalia, however you choose to do so, and be sure to check back next week for a new episode covering Tarot's car #1, The Magician, a new Manga of the Week, more comic books, more news and theories, and a ton of fun for you and me both! Unfortunately it does also include an Obit section, mainly focusing on the late, great Kevin Conroy 0:16:54. A smattering of rumors go alongside some news proper 0:23:47, which is mainly focused, at this point, on the curious mess over there at Warner's DCEU. Lots of thoughts, not a lot of actual movement on their side. Then we come into the Manga/Anime segment 0:32:26, with our manga of the week spotlight on CAT + GAMER by Wataru Nadatani. It's a delightful and funny slice of life story that I recommend to all reader, cat lovers, and/or gamers! And only two volumes out in English, coming from Dark Horse. As in certain fantasy series of some repute, Winter has been coming for a very long time in the mythos of Changeling: the Dreaming, but never quite fully arriving. With the release of Harbingers of Winter, we get one take on what it might look like in the 20th Anniversary Edition, in the shape of the various antagonists who populate the world of the game: Autumn People, Thallain, Dauntain, and more. In this episode, we have a conversation with C20 writer, STV contributor, and longtime community fixture Charlie Cantrell about his stewardship of the project under the banner of his group Radio Free Arcadia. Join us as we talk about his history with the game, the genesis of the book, and a chapter-by-chapter exploration of how to deploy these foes—some updated, some brand new—for your chronicle. notable artworks! There's much scuttlebutt in the episode about the Brood Mother Fomorian, who churns out chimerical monstrosities from the grist of changelings sacrificed to her maw. (Gross.) Charlie mentions a piece of artwork originally from Denizens of the Dreaming that seems to portend all her squoodly glory twenty years later: It seems her image was lingering in the pages of canon, just waiting to get a write-up somewhere down the line... Also, we talk about the excellent art of Alaina Milare, who did the maeghar splat artwork near the end of the book, which is this mopey fae vampire guy here: Please check out her work at https://www.alainamilareart.com/ ! Much of it is Changeling-focused character work that evokes the spirit of the game and has a very classic splat-portrait feel. ... poll: who's your favorite fomorian? Just as a shameless attempt to get some awareness out there about our Discord (the link, as always, is https://discord.gg/SAryjXGm5j), we'll have a poll there for your favorite Fomorian character (or general Court, if you can't decide). Because there are over twenty options from the named Fomorians given some details and backstory in the Harbingers book, here are the six heavyweights that you can pick from: Balor: the original Big Bad of the Fomorians, with the evil eye to end all evil eyes (as well as anyone who it gazed upon)Z'laad, Storm of Color: a pure tempest of primordial and colorful Dark Glamour, rampaging like a cluster headache oil slick through the DreamingEnphida, Goblin Queen of Machines: inventor of despicable war machines, whose inspiration took everywhere from the Unseelie nocker freehold of Goblin Town to (apparently) a tryst with an Etherite mageBrood Mother: see above for all you need to know, reallyBres: the surprisingly beautiful grandson of Balor who was briefly tapped as ruler of the fae by the Tuatha (until it didn't go so well for all involved)Marena: Queen of Frost and embodiment of all the cruelty of winter And if you can't decide, you can always just vaguely vote for The Green Court (inscrutable, nigh-Lovecraftian beings), The Red Court (unthinkably powerful and bloodthirsty war-titans), or The White Court (cold and calculating grand-scale manipulators). Whoever wins, we'll do... something. A write-up? A series of story hook ideas? A ritual sacrifice? Only time will tell! ... optional shapes of things It's important to remember that the shape of Winter in this book is just one possibility—as we mention a couple times in this episode's discussion, the Golden Rule of White Wolf games, and Changeling in particular, is that you can and should reshape things to better serve your game. If something doesn't fit with your vision, change it! Not everyone wants to imagine the world of the fae going in a direction quite so dark or horrific (or maybe their brand of horrific just looks different). Harbingers of Winter features antagonists who would go against the Kithain for a variety of reasons, each of which comes with their own baked-in set of themes and narratives, but none of them are set in stone. If you want to include Thallain as part of a redemption arc, new and complicated varieties of Dauntain, or Tithed who have a less antagonistic relationship with their fae "twins," go for it. Winter is to some extend what you make of it at your table, both in-character and out-of-character. Will it be slow and eternal, or just another passage of a season? Will it be exceptionally brutal, with Kithain cutting each other's throats for the barest hint of Glamour and Fomorians rampaging through the Dreaming, or will it be a much more boring, Banal affair where the fae are slowly smothered into forgetfulness? How aware of it are the characters, if at all? Is their narrative arc one of bleak fatalism, determined questing to bring on a new Spring, or unified survival in the most hidden parts of the world? To some extent, these are the questions that underlie the discussion of what Changeling 5th Edition (in the distant, possibly alternate, future in which that appears) might look like. So far, Vampire is our only point of reference in print, and it's both grittier and more low-level-focused (at least at its base) than the setting was for many years prior. If we assume that all the games that get a 5th edition will go in that direction, certainly Winter could become a central theme of Changeling, displacing petty concerns like courtly intrigue and romps through the Dreaming as the fae struggle to maintain their inner spark in the darkest world they've seen for a long time. But that theme has always been part of the game, as have the permutations of how they deal with it, so a refocus on that aspect isn't totally out of nowhere, just... something to think about, that perhaps more tables should have been thinking about already. (And we affirm that Harbingers of Winter is a good book for getting some of those thoughts going.) ... more from charlie cantrell If you want to see more of what Charlie has been/is up to... Welcome to the May Yancy Street Special, Justice for Madelyne Pryor, the Goblin Queen! Maddie has a tumultuous comic history, one that takes a degree of research to fully understand, so I've done the work for you! Here you'll find everything you ever wanted to know about Madelyne Pryor, tip to toe, from Claremont-era X-Men to Vita Ayala's current New Mutants arc. There's good reason Maddie has become a bit of a fan favorite, and I hope after this, you'll agree! Please note the content warning at the beginning of the episode for biological engineering, brainwashing, emotional and physical torture, abandonment, murder and suicide, psychological damage and extreme trauma, removal of personhood, infanticide, cheating and betrayal, etc. Key Comics 0:07:42, covering all the noteworthy issues marking integral moments in her history. Aliases 0:10:51, every name Madelyne is called through her comic history, and from which issues. Team and Roles 0:13:18, going over Maddie's involvement as a Pilot/Mechanic, X-Men, Berserker, and more! Alternate Versions 0:22:01, briefly summarizing 5 different realities' versions of Maddie, plus one extra 616-version. Outfit Redesigns 0:27:32, focusing on two canon redesigns and 2 unofficial fan designs by professional artists. I also forgot to note a few things about Maddie's Goblin Queen outfit in this section, namely that anyone who's worn a "similar" top will understand it actually sits rather snug and comfortably. Additionally, the costume originated when Madelyne first became her "evil" version of herself, when her goal was the mental torture of her ex-husband, Scott. Her sultry look goes along with that intention just as much as the seduction of his younger brother, Alex. Relationships 0:32:01, talking Madelyne's interactions and time with Kate (Kitty) Pryde, Jean Grey, Scott and Alex Summers, the other X-Men, Mister Sinister, and others. Full Character Chronology 0:46:10, going over her entire comic book history, with insights, explanations, and everything else you can think of! The Modern History 1:05:39, covering anything that's happened to Maddie since Inferno (1989). Her TRUE Origin1:08:12, explaining the creators' original intention behind Madelyne, and how her story became so twisted away from those intentions by the end. My personal head-canon of who she is and how to handle her 1:12:24, because it shouldn't be so hard to get a satisfying plot surrounding her out! And finally, the current New Mutants Arc 1:15:05, starting with the recent release of issue #25, and discussing what might be coming in subsequent issues, based on what information we have. I hope you feel this special has done Madelyne Pryor justice, for what little I can offer. We an only hope those with the power to make positive change and deserved recognition in her story, do so, and do so well. Next Podcast Upload: Episode 66, Monday June 6th! Good afternoon! This week we are an Egyptian History podcast, at least for a moment! This week's NEWS 0:08:04 starts with a few minor points before breaking into the rest, starting with release updates for Across the Spider-Verse 0:10:22 parts 1 and 2. There are also some release changes on the horizon for the Batgirl movie 0:13:21. It's become time to finally address the Disney vs Florida situation 0:18:05, and let me be clear, I am NOT in agreement with the government of Florida in any way. Then we have, on a lighter note, a rumored Elsa Bloodstone casting 0:27:26 for Werewolf y Night, Love and Thunder Casting Rumors 0:30:21 regarding Angela, Thor's half-sister with a complicated comic boo history, and the alleged Illuminati Lineup for Multiverse of Madness 0:41:11, in theaters next week! While only a few, this week's comic PICKS 0:56:16 are mostly all bangers. The adjoining PULLS 1:03:14 for this week have a TON to look forward to! While discussing MOON KNIGHT ep.4 1:10:44, we temporarily transition the podcast to being an Egyptian History podcast, because I can't help myself, and they got a LOT wrong in that episode, to be honest. But there's always the fun comic references and theories, too! Then it's YOUNG JUSTICE s4 1:31:19 episode 19, where we are starting to see the light at the end of the complex tunnel. Marvel COMICS July Solicits 1:36:08 are quite long this month, and DC Comics JULY Solicitations 1:49:22 are a bit shorter, but full of some great material to look forward to. And that's that! Definitely be sure to check out the Yancy Street Specials, as the May Special will be all about Patsy Walker! And keep an eye out later this week for a SURPRISE special, regarding Madelyne Pryor, the Goblin Queen! Stay hydrated, keep it sweaty, see you next week! Things get chaotic as we discuss HAVOK! Is this Summers brother as… difficult as Scott? Tune in to find out! Intro AMA for 150 Background (1:57) Havok (Alex Summers) created by Arnold Drake and Don Heck in The X-Men #54 (March 1969) Alex Summers is the younger Summers son - he and his older brother Scott were in a plane crash piloted by their father Christopher - the boys survived the crash, though Scott was in a coma for a while Raised in an orphanage before being adopted by a family whose son died in a car crash - he was kidnapped by the same person responsible for the young boy's death, but Alex's powers of plasma blasts manifested and he burned the boy - Mr. Sinister discovered Alex and put a psi-block on him to help him control his powers Later captured by Larry Trask & the sentinels - given the code name Havok, as he had difficulty controlling his powers Joined the X-Men and began an on-again/off-again relationship with Polaris - they later quit to focus on their relationship Alex learned that his father was Corsair of the Starjammers Had a brief relationship with Madelyne Pryor, Scott's ex-wife, while she was working as the Goblin Queen, and she manipulated him to help her take over the world, until she discovered she was a clone of Jean Grey and killed herself #BecauseComics Joined X-Factor, a government sponsored mutant group, and eventually led the team for a while - he left after Multiple Man's death at the hands of the Legacy Virus For a time, Alex was sent to an alternate universe, where he discovered that universe's version was married to Madelyne and had a child named Scott - Alex served as a father figure for a while until he was returned to his reality Returned in a coma - fell in love with his nurse, Annie, but he still had feelings for Polaris, and they got engaged - Alex left her at the altar because of his lingering feelings for Annie, and Polaris tried to kill her before being stopped by Juggernaut and Alex Joined his father and learned he had a younger brother, Vulcan, who is head of the Shi'ar Empire - Vulcan kills Corsair, and Havok battles Vulcan but is defeated Later serves as head of the Avengers Unity Squad after Avengers vs X-Men, since Captain America wants a mutant to lead the team after Xavier's death at the hands of Scott During AXIS, his morality is inverted, and he reconciles with Scott, but remains corrupted after the spell is reversed He is currently living on Krakoa with all mutants, spending time with his family in the Summer House on the Moon Issues - Theme: instability befitting his name (7:24) Nature of relationship with Scott - “Good” Scott vs. “Bad” Alex Hero, villain, and in-between (15:17) Can't catch a break, and he knows it (22:33) Break (31:29) Plugs for BetterHelp, Grief Burrito, and Chris Claremont Treatment (33:04) In-universe - Use his suit as a form of biofeedback to allow him to get better in tune with himself Out of universe - (38:24) Skit (45:22) Hello Alex, I'm Dr. Issues. - Hello, Doctor *sigh* You don't exactly seem enthused about this. -*pause* Is that a question? Well, what is it about seeing me that gets you down? Or, were you already depressed and that's why you're here? -Nothing that dramatic. I doubt I'm the first mutant you've seen that doesn't like the idea of scrutinizing their past, digging up mistakes, talking about the stuff that nobody else wants to hear. I'm actually not a downer kind of guy. Honest! Fine with me. Then let's try again. What brings you here, on your own terms? -I'm messed up. Is there a reason it has to be analyzed more than that? I don't do that type of analysis unless it's absolutely necessary. This is meant to be confidential, anyway. -I know. That's why I agreed to do this. I have a big idea, but I'm doubtful anything will come of it. Plus it's going to make me sound psychotic. Don't jump to that conclusion. What's up? -My family has a way of being dramatic. A proud member of the club! -Maybe I can…I don't know…my brothers are really different. But Scott especially. There's this vibe I get sometimes. He holds a lot back, and I know he doesn't trust me as much as he could. That's my fault. I own it. But…this is the crazy part…he doesn't say anything to me, but I noticed some changes, you know? I tried to ask him, and all he did was give your card. I'm not asking about him, but what did he say about me? I'm getting paranoid about it. I can't talk about any other person outside of you. -Then that confirms it! I've been tortured that way, given lies to make me think the worst of the world. I don't let that stuff break me. But Scott just gives me your card, doesn't say a word. Does he think I'm that screwed up that he can't talk to me? I'd rather he blast me in the face because I know I can shake that off. Is this about sibling rivalry, or getting dirt? -No way, doctor. I'm just trying to put 2 and 2 together. You know how many times I've been told I'm out of control? Sometimes I lean into that. Live with it. Love with it. We don't see the world the same way. He's the one to show up, show out, and wait for the applause. I show up, and…who knows? He wanted me to do this, and I can't figure out why. He always has a plan. Forget about his plan. What's your plan? What do you want to do? -I don't want what he wants. He always talks about the oppressed, and the constant struggle to make mutantkind a shining example to the world. Well, what about the world? What about those downtrodden who also don't have a genetic eraser to bail them out of trouble? It's hubris. I can't stand people like that. But that's all I ever see when people lead. I saw it with Scott, I saw it in Cap, I even saw it in Charles sometimes. *pause* Maybe they need this more than me. They're the ones that call the shots. I don't want to be a part of that. With such eloquence and candor, someone's bound to put you in that spot -They did! Oh, did they ever. Hated it. It's not for me. I'm a wildcard. I know better than to cut loose and abandon the people I fight with. That's a sacred bond. But that doesn't mean I should be some poster boy managing the day-to-day stuff. Ok, hypothetical here: what if you help me. Then what? I learn to tolerate things I don't like instead of doing more of what I DO like? I spend my evenings planning missions instead being with the love of my life? Why would I want that? I'm noticing a pattern here, and it's unique. Most people that step foot into my office are afraid of failure. You are on the opposite end of the spectrum. What if you succeed? You said you had big plans -*interrupting* and they blow up. That's just the way it is. It doesn't have to be. You can find a new way to enjoy things, you can bring along loved ones as your mind expands, you can still find ways to say no, except by choice instead of by chance. Learn to put the chaos in the background for once instead of making it the whole picture. - But how? It's all around me. Hell, it's in my name. At this point it's kinda part & parcel of the whole Alex Summers package. Asking me to give that up is like trying to teach me not to breathe. More like a new breathing technique. I'm not asking you to stop being who you are. You have an amazing opportunity to fine tune what makes you such a dynamic person. Start by starting. It's going to be messy, and that's okay. This isn't a competition against your brother, your mentors, or those you care about. It's you against yourself, and that is a race you can always win. - You make it sound so easy. I've done the “fresh start” thing. Several times. X-Factor. Unity Squad. Krakoa. How many times can I reboot? It's like starting a new comic book and slapping a #1 on the title - it's still the same retread. Keep track, then. Too often I come across cases where people have taken the right action, and don't know how they got there, or where things went wrong. That's the difficult…and let's be honest, the boring part. If you're willing to do the small stuff, then you'll be surprised at how it compounds over time. - Like interest. Problem is, interest can be negative. Like my interest in this conversation. Ok, let's go there. Let's hash this out in full. You are an example of chaos theory, which means, like the mathematical system it's based on, you're not as random as you seem, and can have several parts of your life modeled out with a decent likelihood of the known outcomes. HOWEVER, if you decide to take control, you have now changed the whole spectrum to a simple parabola. I have news for you (as if you didn't already know) but your life is never going to be bland, or simple. But there is one variable you can use, and it's your own psyche. Think of this conversation as the butterfly effect for how your emotions and thought processes occur from this point forward. - Well, I was told there would be no math. But I get what you're going for. *sigh* I mean, it's worth a shot. Can't be any worse than the umpteen other things I've tried, right? I suppose I should give Scott a call and talk to him about this, too. Of course he's gonna gloat about it. God, he's such a… Yes? - I was gonna call him names, but he means well, even if he's too blunt for his own good sometimes. I don't know what you're talking about. - And here I thought you said you couldn't divulge anything about your clients… he can be a dick sometimes, you can admit it. I do not discuss patients with other patients, even if they're siblings. - Even if they're right? I do not. Discuss. Patients. With. Other. Patients. - Alright, fair enough Doc. I won't tell him you called him a dick. I DID NOT! - Hahaha, gotcha! The Villains talk comics and what's up with Goblin Queen
There's been something building in the background. It started with the Hellfire Club's manipulations of our dear friend Jean Grey. It twisted further when her retcon revealed itself. It was built even greater as the embers of Inferno started to gather. Madelyne's story gives us a peek into the X-Men's journey, while also building up a tragic hero's story, manipulated at every instance into becoming the Queen she always could be. We discuss Madelyne's road to becoming the Goblin Queen and the inciting Inferno Thanks for listening to our forty-eighth episode of Season 3! Things are even heating up in our classic episodes!! It's a rainy Monday around here, I hope your week is off to a solid start! Today's episode begins as usual with News, broken up into four sections: Trailers 0:10:40, Movie/TV Updates 0:17:40, General Industry News 0:27:50, and Rumors 0:45:31. Trailers include the first look at Naomi, and a few new clips of Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman movie, brought to you by a trailer from Warner Japan. Movie and TV updates features bits on The Marvels, the Gotham PD Reeves spinoff show, Shang-Chi, and Netflix's Cowboy Bebop. General Industry News covers the newly announced Wonder Woman video game, and what we know of Marvel in March, specifically Captain Carter, Destiny of X, and most importantly, Immortal X-Men. And finally, rumors goes over the potential The Losers Amazon show, everything you wanted to know about Phyla Vell possibly coming to the MCU, and more on that Shuri (Wakanda Forever) situation. I only had a handful of comic book picks to talk about this week 0:53:13, which were Dark Knights of Steel #2, Inferno #3, Hellions #18 (the series finale and the return of Madelyne Pryor, Goblin Queen!), Devil's Reign #1, and Daisy #1 from Dark Horse, which tbh I forgot to go back to and discuss, but was fantastic. I run through this week's pull list 1:09:30 pretty quick so I can get to the Hawkeye episode four discussion! 1:17:21 As usual, I cover all the easter eggs, hidden details, character references, comic origin material, and every bit of speculation I felt worthy of my time, including one or two theories that I'm personally banking on pretty hard. This is the third of our short-story adaptations from Charles Dickens' "The Pickwick Papers" and his first Yuletide supernatural tale. It tells of Gabriel Grub, a morose, lonely and drunken gravedigger who hates people, particularly during the festive season. One Christmas Eve, while at work in the graveyard, he encounters a startlingly scary Goblin Queen (and her many subjects), who terrorises and whisks him away to her underworld lair where Grub is shown the true human values of the season.Dickens was to return triumphantly to this theme seven years later with "A Christmas Carol".Remastered version.

To me, my nerds! There are two very accurate thigs about me. 1) I love Madelyne Pryor (the Goblin Queen) in the original Inferno event (1988). 2) I love Johnathon Hickman's comics. So when it was announced that Hickman was taking over the X-Men universe and revamping the Inferno event for a modern audience, it was obvious I'd be all over it. Here, I have compiled a special edition podcast to prep audiences for what's coming in Inferno (2021)! I even included a coinciding blog post that features images I reference during the podcast, so make sure to click the link below to follow along: Inferno Prep Blog Post Here! Here's what I'm covering in this Inferno discussion: The original Inferno event basic overview, 1988 @ 0:15:07 The character of Madelyne Pryor, Goblin Queen @ 27:08 How this modern take links with the OG Inferno @ 0:43:48 A brief mention of Inferno (2015) (didn't get the timestamp sorry lol) Modern Inferno prep, HoX/PoX crash course @ 0:48:52 How Destiny and Mystique fit into this @ 0:57:06 The question of clones on Krakoa @ 1:02:02 And finally, the other players @ 1:05:33 I think that covers it all! If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or theories you'd like to discuss, let me know! Interact with the podcast in whatever way you can, or find me on social media! Otherwise, I'll b back for our regularly scheduled Friday "B" Episode on October 1st, talking NCBD, What If...? and Titans! Do your best, be empathetic, and sweat it out, my friends. Inferno is the first X-book storyline to truly be a crossover, in that the story actually continued from one title to another from month to month (X-Men and X-Factor). Sinister and N'astirh independently manipulate Madelyne Pryor, both for their own ends. Madelyne makes a deal with N'astirh to get her son back from Sinister, and becomes the Goblin Queen. The transformation, combined with Sinister's revelations about her origins, and the events in her life (notably her abandonment by Scott Summers) all contrive to force her further into N'astirh's arms as she vows to sacrifice her son for the demon's plan. The X-Men and X-Factor clash over Madelyne - X-Factor mostly concerned for the child and the X-Men mostly concerned for Madelyne, whom they see as wronged by Scott. Into the confusion Sinister throws the Marauders. Everything comes to a head when Jean Grey fights and defeats Madelyne Pryor, rescuing Nathan. This week we have more unstructured, conversational episode for you. Grant and Peter realized back in episode 173 that we'd like to talk about when players know what the GM is planning, but as we talked about the upcoming episode, we all realized that what we had was more of a discussion and a collection of observations than a collection of structured advice. We start with the usual check-in, which has Peter and Grant both craving classic genre fiction and Jenny the Goblin Queen a bit under the weather. We then move into our Patreon question this week , which comes from Tom Stephens, who asks " (as someone who just got a MLS degree recently myself - finished in 2016, this one's for Jenny with a generalized version for the others): What was your most and least favorite class from your library degree program. For the others, what was the most and least favorite class from any training you've had recently or even going back to college? " From there, we launch into a loose collection of advice and observations that comprise the central topic. More than usual, we can see multiple sides of this and talk about when it's useful for the players to know more, when it's not, why you might or might not want to hand out more information in your games, the considerations of various genres, and so on. Mentioned in this episode: Star Power Scripture: Psalm 33:10-11, Proverbs 16:3, Matthew 6:25-34
The Marvel Hacks are back with our continued walkthrough of Jonathan Hickman's run on Secret Wars 2015 with issue #6. This week, more exposition and very little comic book action. Dr. Doom stays lying, Valeria Scooby Doo investigates, Miles Morales has a very old hamburger, and The Goblin Queen is the real highlight. Plus The Thing is a big wall. Fun listen from your boys at Brothascomics.

We're back with the 78th episode of the Character Corner. We're almost to the end of our Claremont X-Men run. Picking up right where we left off after the Trial of Magneto with issue 201 and it's Cyclops vs Storm for leadership of the X-Men! Scott is reunited with his wife, Madelyne, and his son Nathan but he's struggling to figure out where he fits in. Does he stay with the X-Men or does he retire and go off as a husband and a father? Storm sensing the struggle inside of her friend and colleague uses Scott's distracted mind against him and even though she's de-powered, easily takes Scott down to assume leadership. That would be the end of Scott's time as a team leader and set him off on a path of growth however, we must address the elephant in the room: The Return of Jean Grey. John Bryne brings Jean back in the pages of the Fantastic Four (Fantastic Four #286) much to the chagrin of Claremont. Claremont then sets forward to put together a saga that gives a purpose to the now abandoned Madelyne Pryor. In the end, Claremont with the help of Louise Simonson (Who is handling the writing duties in the pages of X-Factor), pull together several lose threads and create story that has long last implications for the X-Family. Here's a quick rundown of some of the things that come about during this arc: Mr Sinister's first appearance (Throw in Apocalypse's appearance over in X-Factor) and the importance of the Summers bloodline Formation of X-Factor and Excaliber teams The Marauders severely injuring Angel, Nightcrawler, Colossus and Shadowcat (Angel's injury sets him on the path to becoming Archangel) Madelyne Pryor becoming the Goblin Queen and learning she's a clone of Jean Grey First appearance of the nation of Genosha Rachel Summers bonding with the Phoenix Force and more There's a lot to cover in these issues. One could describe this arc as the Sinister Saga. Mr. Sinister is mentioned during the Mutant Massacre crossover in issue #212 and doesn't make his full appearance until issue #221. But he's the man behind the curtain from the first time he's mentioned all the way thorough Inferno. Now here's a bonus. If you're reading Jonathan Hickman's Powers of X and House of X, then you'll no doubt notice a lot of familiar faces popping up from the Claremont X-Men run. But you'll have to wait until we cover our next Pull List episode next month once House of X and Powers of X are complete. When we come back with the next episode, we'll take a step back and catch up with the New Mutants part 2, the next Pull List episode and then on episode 80 of the Character Corner, we'll wrap up the historic Claremont X-Men run. A disturbed teenage girl. A baby-snatching goblin king with a distractingly prominent codpiece. A supporting cast of creature features ranging from bizarre to frankly terrifying. Every scene of Jim Henson's Labyrinth is burned into the memories of a generation of movie viewers. With the late-great David Bowie taking the iconic role of Jareth, the aforementioned well endowed Goblin King, any proposed sequel to this 80s classic would have to wrestle with the unthinkable prospect of recasting. Who could possibly step into his shoes? This week on Beyond The Box Set, we've challenged ourselves to come up with some ideas... Labyrinth is a rare film that we both have equally strong memories of, proving that despite initially poor box office returns, the movie enjoys a truly timeless appeal. Join us on this week's episode as we discuss bad acting vs dream acting, the bizarre genius of the Bog of Eternal Stench and why Sir Didymus is the absolute worst... ----- Beyond The Box Set is the hit British podcast in which two hapless but creative film nerds pitch sequel, prequel and spin-off ideas for classic standalone movies. We've been featured as a must-listen Podcast by Podbean, The Guardian and iTunes, and our show is available on virtually all major platforms. We also have a dedicated Patreon page where fans can access a host of bonus content, including our weekly cinema review show 'Beyond BTBS' and the opportunity to choose a film for us to cover on a future episode of the main show - all for as little as £2 per month!. beyondtheboxset.com patreon.com/beyondtheboxset twitter.com/beyondtheboxset facebook.com/beyondtheboxset instagram.com/beyondtheboxset 00.00: Seriously, that codpiece... 27.50: Labyrinth Drinking Games 33.45: Labyrinth: A 30 Rock Production 47.40: Labyrinth 2: Revenge of the Goblin Queen 1.02.00: Listener Submissions & Episode 74 Preview

In the DOMINION-SIZE Episode 100 of CEREBRO, Connor and fan favorite guest Sara Century paint the town red with Madelyne Pryor, the glorious Goblin Queen! Created by Chris Claremont and Paul Smith, Maddie was introduced in 1983 as a new love interest for Scott Summers following the death of Jean Grey in 1980's The Dark Phoenix Saga. Intended by Claremont to facilitate Scott's happy ending and retirement from the X-Men, Maddie went in a dramatically different direction after editorial demanded Scott and Jean be reunited in 1986's X-Factor.Despite the titles (which are a nod to Inferno), this is Part 2 of 5.Our Sponsors:* Check out Drizly: https://drizly.com* Check out Factor and use my code cerebro50 for a great deal: https://www.factormeals.com/cerebro50Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Intended by Claremont to facilitate Scott's happy ending and retirement from the X-Men, Maddie went in a dramatically different direction after editorial demanded Scott and Jean be reunited in 1986's X-Factor.A talented and iron-willed pilot bearing an eerie resemblance to the late Jean, Maddie proves herself as a dynamic individual in her own right and becomes Cyclops's first wife, the mother of his son Nathan Christopher — only to be abandoned once Jean returns. Attacked by the Marauders, who steal her baby and leave her for dead, she becomes a loyal ally to Storm's team of X-Men, even sacrificing her life alongside them in Fall of the Mutants to become the Outback Era team's tech-savvy Girl Friday. Sadly, still wounded by Scott's betrayal, she proves susceptible to demonic influence and becomes the twisted Goblin Queen, avatar of Limbo, whose quest to reclaim her child sends all New York spiraling into a fiery Inferno. After her triumphant return in the Krakoan era in Hellions by Zeb Wells and Stephen Segovia, Maddie is set to star in Dark X-Men by Steve Foxe and Jonas Scharf, part of the upcoming event Fall of X.The CEREBRO character file on Madelyne Pryor begins at 2:28:58.(Content Advisory: Maddie's story includes torture, attempted infanticide, self-harm, suicide, and weird vibes with an alternate universe nephew. This episode discusses storylines featuring racism, slavery, and sexual violence.)Our Sponsors:* Check out Drizly: https://drizly.com* Check out Factor and use my code cerebro50 for a great deal: https://www.factormeals.com/cerebro50Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
