This week's guests are Gold Steps singer Liz Mauritz and guitarist Zach Duarte. Though the band is currently making a name for itself in Milwaukee with frequent shows, garnering loads of listeners on streaming sites and winning over new fans on a nightly basis during its ambitious tours, the up-and-coming "alt-pop-hyphenated-punk band" actually got its start in Austin. After a few years and a couple hundred shows in and around the musically vibrant Texas capital, Mauritz and Duarte — who are married, by the way — moved back to Mauritz's home state and set their sights on the Milwaukee music scene. Not long after getting back from Gold Steps' latest U.S. tour, Mauritz and Duarte met up with My First Band host Tyler Maas at Milwaukee Record headquarters to talk about the recent run of shows, the reception their great new EP (That Ain't It — out now on Revival Recordings!) and hitting the ground running in their new home base after close to two years of pandemic-prompted inactivity. Over the course of the conversation, Mauritz and Duarte talked about their brief stint in another band, what led to the start of Gold Steps, opportunities and obstacles they experienced in the competitive Austin music scene, the move to Milwaukee and plans for the future of the band. Along the way, Liz talked about her love of Lakefront Brewery, her employer and the beer sponsor of this very show! My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Gold Steps ("Petty").

Wisconsin Music Podcast Episode 078 Gold Steps Alternative Press has named them in their “10 unsigned bands to keep an eye on in 2021" and aptly called their music a fusion of pop-punk and post-hardcore, with "cathartic emo vocals and lyrics" that make for an eclectic blend all their own. For a band that says they've never felt like part of the in crowd, this is just one of many accolades ringing throughout the industry. The band has been featured in Rock Sound, had several features in Alternative Press, a spot on San Antonio's Warped Tour, So What?!, Summerfest, and SXSW official showcases. They've even shared the stage with acts like Belmont, As It Is, Forever Came Calling, The Ataris, Aaron Gillespie (Underoath, The Almost), and more through regional and national tours. Self-proclaimed Warped Tour Kids who found refuge in bands of the 90s and early 2000s pop-punk scene, Milwaukee's Gold Steps brings a playful, energetic mood to all that they create, with a sound that teeters between influences like The Wonder Years, State Champs, and Neck Deep to create impassioned lyrics and hard-hitting, emotive songs. ”In creativity, there are no rules,” says the band. “We've written songs in many different ways. Sometimes we jam something out and it just blossoms into an actual song. Sometimes it starts with a vocal melody. We've even written a song by trying to emulate a specific feeling. Anything goes; All creation starts with just... starting! Somewhere, however, wherever or whatever inspires it..” “Made up of married duo Liz Mauritz (vocals) and Zach Duarte (guitar), with Ryan Rivas (bass) and Mike Britz (drums), the foursome have a slew of releases lined up for 2022. Up first is “Stay The Same” a collaboration with Nick Thompson (Thief Club, Hit The Lights), who not only shares vocals on the track, but appears in the music video as well. “We shot at Four Seasons, this legendary warehouse skatepark in Milwaukee that's peppered with murals by local artists, and asked the CIB Milwaukee chapter crew to skate and show off their mad skills,” explains Liz. “We goofed around on this old toy tractor that's been in my family for generations. And that was it! There were some mishaps pre-shoot, and the shoot was almost derailed an hour before we were scheduled to start...but that's a whole other story." The video achieves what all of Gold Steps' music hopes to achieve—a feeling of belonging. Of being part of the family, even if you've felt like an outcast. For these four friends, it's all about making music they believe in, and hoping that reaches a community of peers who, like Gold Steps, have never been one of the cool kids; but who couldn't possibly care less—so long as they're surrounded by the people and music they love. It's no secret that Hoobastank's music video for The Reason is our favorite heist movie ever, but it recently came to our attention that there's a sequel! Hooba picks up right where they left off and tell a gripping tale of crime, rock and roll, and betrayal all in three minutes, and somehow managed to outdo themselves once again. However, we want more. Selfishly, but there were also a few loose ends that we'd love to see tied up in a neat bow, so we're calling on Doug Robb and the boys to expand the Hoobaverse with a 3rd installment to the series, or preferably a feature-length video. This week Justin and Doug discuss what fictitious pop culture religion they would found. Justin thinks a Beatles religion would be pretty swell and Doug is curious about the religion of the Jedi. The dorks talk about how Porn Hub is looking to add a sex ed section to their website. Doug schools Justin on the difference between the golden and platinum rules in terms of empathy. Doug gives Justin all of the details on the quidditch documentary Mudbloods and the two talk about whether or not they would play. A discussion is had about the light, dark, and gray side of the force in Star Wars. Things are wrapped up with a throw-down with a light side Jedi vs. a dark side Jedi. Doug recommends the UK pop-punk band Neck Deep. Their album Life’s Not Out to Get You is great. Check out their single “Gold Steps.” Justin recommends Sherlock, which is on Netflix now!
