Mark and Mike get five for fighting when they watch the 2017 sequel, Goon: Last of the Enforcers. They discuss sports comedies, the rules of hockey, and the stardom of Sean William Scott
Seann William Scott is famous for being one of the nicest guys in Hollywood. Rising to fame in 1999/2000, hot on the heels of his gross-out teen comedy hits American Pie and Road Trip, Scott was on an enviable hot streak for a while. While attempts to break him out in different kinds of roles didn't pay off at first (the late Ivan Reitman's Evolution and Bulletproof Monk were flops), his comedies remained highly successful, with hits that included Dude, Where's My Car, The Dukes of Hazard and Role Models. Not one to rely on typecasting, Scott attempted to break the mould a few times, starring in Richard Kelly's Southland Tales, the thriller Bloodline and more. While none of those films were ultimately successful, one thing that was always well received was Scott's acting. In 2011, Scott had one of the best roles of his career as hockey enforcer Doug Glatt in the underrated Canadian hockey classic Goon. While only a cult hit, it spawned an even better sequel, Jay Baruchel's Goon: Last of the Enforcers, which, like its predecessor, was only a cult hit in the U.S but a significant success in Canada. Scott also took on a short-lived part on Fox's Lethal Weapon, replacing Clayne Crawford as Damon Wayans' co-star, but that show's tortured production history didn't pave the way for a long run. While Scott arguably isn't quite a household name at this point, he remains a much-loved figure in Hollywood and still has a devoted fan base, such as the ones who suggested we profile him here. With a new show, Welcome to Flatch, on the air - Scott is one of those guys like Bryan Cranston who may go unappreciated for years but could blow up bigger than ever with the right role. Join us as we take a look back at his career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity?

We watched Goon: Last of the Enforcers. It's sort of a troubling movie, but there's some good stuff in there. Also, Griff made some absolute BANK during the unboxing emporium.

Episode's a little on the shorter side and a little low energy because I felt like shit most of the week but hey, that's okay, we still watched some nice movies. This week's movies: Tom and Jerry (2021) The Equalizer (2014) Two-Lane Blacktop (1971) Wind River (2017) Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017) Game of Death (1978)
Jay Baruchel first caught Jessie’s eye in Almost Famous, which led to him being cast in Judd Apatow’s short-lived but well-loved TV series Undeclared. That put him in the same orbit as Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Evan Goldberg and other young talents he’s worked with ever since. He made an impression in such movies as Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby, which contributed to his ultimate goal: becoming a filmmaker himself. He wrote, directed and stars in Goon: Last of the Enforcers and its sequel. His latest endeavor, Random Acts of Violence is now streaming online. A lifelong movie buff and hockey fanatic, like so many Canadians; he’s also great fun to talk to, as you will hear.
Did you hear Jay Baruchel made a horror film? If you're anything like Jim, then you only found out about Random Acts of Violence from Horror Twitter's outrage over his comments about the horror community that reeked of both moral superiority and hypocrisy. The boys spend some time discussing. Not interested in news related to the writer/director of Goon: Last of the Enforcers? Skip ahead about 30 minutes to get into the review of Lurking Fear, the directorial debut of C. Courtney Joyner produced by cut rate, shitty Roger Corman imitator, Charles Band. Delivering everything you'd expect from the producer behind the entire Evil Bong franchise, Lurking Fear is so badly made that it includes at least 3 entirely useless characters and so low budget that they apparently couldn't afford to properly choreograph a fight or ADR their main characters. We may be dealing with a film worse than Albert Pyun's Cool Air.
Daniel gets hung up on hockey logistics and Henry enjoys making hockey puns! Our year of Seann William Scott continues unabated.
On the Richard Crouse Podcast this week we meet Jay Baruchel. He's been acting since the age of twelve and has appeared in everything from "Knocked Up" and "Tropic Thunder" to "The Trotsky" and "She's Out of My League" to the action-fantasy "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "This Is the End." He’s probably best known as the voice of Hiccup in the wildly successful "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise but he says, despite all the success in front of the camera, what he really wants to do is direct. Two years ago he wrote and directed the sports comedy "Goon: Last of the Enforcers." Now he appears both in front of and behind the camera in "Random Acts of Violence," a genre film that asks serious questions about how we relate to violence in art. Based on a 2008 Image Comic, “Random Acts of Violence” begins with comic book writer Todd (Jesse Williams) suffering a case of writer’s block. His series, a grisly and successful adaptation of a real-life serial killer dubbed Slasherman, is coming to an end and he doesn’t know how to wind it down. On a press tour from Toronto to New York to promote the final issue, Jesse and friends, visit the scene of the Slasherman’s crimes. As the group fall victim to a series of heinous copycat crimes the film asks, “What are the real consequences when life (and death) begin to imitate art?” I talk about that with Jay in this interview but we started by reminiscing about the “beforetime” when we could go to the movies. I asked him what movie memories stand out for him when he thinks back to the theatre experience. NOTE: This podcast contains language that may not be suitable for all listeners. NSFW! Then, we meet Mike Scott, the founding member, lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of The Waterboys. He is a restless creative spirit, known for radical changes in music style throughout what he refers to as his "allegedly unorthodox" career. The music on his solo albums and with The Waterboys explores a number of different styles, including folk, Celtic and rock and roll, fusing them together to create a sound that is not only catchy but unique. The press release for his newest record "Good Luck, Seeker," says the songs are populated by unrepentant freaks, soul legends, outlaw film stars and 20th Century mystics, drawing inspiration from the Stones, Kate Bush, Sly and Kendrick as well as Mike Scott’s very own musical past. It’s a genre busting effort with epic songs like the dramatic, spoken word tune "My Wanderings In The Weary Land" to the earworm of the extremely catchy single “The Soul Singer.” In this interview we talk about the construct of time, the power of the Clash and why he liked a record by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich enough to spend 8 and sixpence, or about 50 cents on it… I began the interview by asking Mike Scott why he’s never made the same record twice.

This week's episode features Montreal actor and writer Jay Baruchel. You may know him best as the writer and actor from the movie Goon, and the director/actor of its sequel, Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Jay recently released a new book called “Born Into It: A Fan's Life” which talks about his love for the Montreal Canadiens. We talk about the process of creating the book, who his favourite broadcaster for Habs games is, and why it's important for Montrealers and Torontonians to hate each other.Buy “Born Into It: A Fan's Life”https://www.chapters.indigo.ca/en-ca/books/born-into-it-a-fans/9781443452793-item.htmlTell us your stories! thescrumpodcast@gmail.comSupport the show! https://www.patreon.com/thescrumpodcastMERCH! https://www.teepublic.com/stores/up-for-discusssion?ref_id=2539@TheScrumPodcast @jkamckenzie @tristandamoursMusic by @NotReallyHobbes: https://soundcloud.com/not-really-hobbeswww.upfordnetwork.com
Also discussed: Annihilation (2018), Spiderman: Homecoming - SPOILERS! (2017), Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017), Bone Tomahawk (2015). Guys, this is an unmissable episode of Nic, Tys and Videotape. If you're clamouring to hear two dudes ramble their way through an unfocused and inessential discussion of a mid-naughties, raunchy yet heartfelt comedy... boy have we got you covered!!! That's right, we're talking ROLE MODELS, and when we're not being distracted by the biological make-up of mythical creatures or the undiscovered recreational uses of some pretty intense sedatives, we may happen to stumble across the odd insight into a film that could actually be an incredibly intelligent deconstruction of misguided masculinity... also Ken Marino is in it. We also discuss a US cinema release that went straight to NETFLIX everywhere else in What Did You Watch This Week?, revisit an old friend from the 80's in Talkin' Trailers, and Nic recommends a shockingly violent western/horror in Crossing The Streams. On episode 310 of The Harold & Maudecast, "Sequels", hosts Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review Kingsman: The Golden Circle and Goon: Last of the Enforcers. All too often sequels don't quite live up to their originals, with some notable exceptions (Godfather 2, Superman 2....) we examine the art of the sequel and review two new film sequels whose originals were unexpected sleeper hits. After the Kingsman's HQ is destroyed by drug dealer, Poppy (Julianne Moore), Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Merlin (Mark Strong) must team up with their American counterparts, The Statesman to take Poppy down before she destroys the world. The Statesman, whose front is a Bourbon distillery in Kentucky, are headed up by Champagne (Jeff Bridges) along with Tequila (Channing Tatum), Whiskey (Pedro Pascal) and Ginger Ale (Halle Berry). Kingsman: The Golden Circle is Drected/Co-Written by Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman the Secret Service, X-Men: First Class) and Co-Written by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass), Kingsman the Secret Service) . The film was theatrically released on September 22, 2017. Sidelined after one too many hits and now married to Eva (Alison Pill) with a baby on the way, Doug "The Thug" Glatt (Seann William Scott) hangs up his skates and tries to live a 9 to 5 life. But when Doug's nemesis, Anders Cain (Wyatt Russell), is made captain of the Highlanders and new ownership threatens to tear his team apart, Doug's old nemesis Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber) helps him get back on the ice. Goon: Last of the Enforcers is Directed by Jay Baruchel and Co-Written by Baruchel and Jesse Chabot. The film had a limited theatrical release on September 1, 2017 and is available on Streaming services. Joining us this week is actor Wallace Shawn, whose many film credits include roles in The Princess Bride, the Toy Story films, and My Dinner with Andre. An accomplished playwright and author, Wallace talks to Jesse about his recent book, a long essay titled "Night Thoughts." But first: a visit from Canadian comedian and director Jay Baruchel. Jay talks about directing "Goon: Last of the Enforcers" and explains what makes the Canadian comedic sensibility so unique. Plus, English singer-songwriter Nick Lowe recalls the 1950s country and western song that changed his life. Finally, Jesse praises a story-driven video game that captures the loneliness and ambiguity of our lives.
Actor Jay Baruchel takes the trip down from Canada to talk with Marc about life, acting and the Great White North. Jay explains what it was like being raised in a family that was righteously engaged in politics while also beset by criminal activity and alcoholism. He also tells Marc why it's important to him to see Canadian culture reflected in film, which is one of the reasons he wrote and directed the new movie Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Welcome to the House of Crouse. Last year Taylor Sheridan helped breathe new life into the western genre with the script to Hell or High Water. It was a hot and sweaty West Texas crime drama that earned four Oscar nominations. Before that he penned Sicario, the Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro drama about an idealistic FBI agent working with an elite task force to stem the flow of drugs between Mexico and the US. His latest film, this time as both writer and director, is another neo-western but feels much different. “Wind River” is a wintry murder mystery set on a First Nations Reserve. Listen in and find out why he wouldn't trust anyone but himself to direct this film. Then Wyatt Russell, son of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell and star of the soon-to-be-released-on-DVD "Goon: Last of the Enforcers" swings by to talk hockey and having famous folks. It's good stuff so c'mon in and sit a spell.

It's been two weeks, so get ready for a super-sized podcast. In this episode, Sal and Tim talk about the second round of the 2017 NHL playoffs, including the Penguins upset of the Capitals, Upper Deck's new Bounty program with SP Authentic, and Goon: Last of the Enforcers finally getting a U.S. release date. Other topics discussed include Grandeur Hockey Coins, and Sal's long-unfulfilled wish for a Youngblood sequel.
Welcome to the House of Crouse. First up, "Wilson" star Judy Greer stops by for a quick visit to talk about working with Woody Harrelson and signing the boobs of Archer fans. Then we go long with "Goon: Last of the Enforcers" star Kim Coates. He recites Shakespeare, talks about "Sons of Anarchy" and growing up on the Canadian Prairies. From boobs to Shakespeare, we cover it all, so c'mon in and sit a spell.
Welcome to a much-talked about movie that Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan finally get to review: The Devil's Candy. After years of Chris hyping it up, it finally has been released and we take our time going through Sean Byrne's follow-up to The Loved Ones. How does it compare to his previous film, both in quality and tonally? Why do we feel bad for Pruitt Taylor Vince? Will there ever be another horror movie that handles metal with this much class? This and so much more await you in the podcast below. But wait, there's more! Nobody remakes like Gaston! Which is why Chris saw Beauty & The Beast to see how the live action adaptation of the Disney classic holds up. He also saw The Chamber, the directorial debut of Ben Parker which takes place entirely in a small submarine. Meanwhile, Dylan saw the sequel to the surprise hit, Goon, entitled Goon: Last of the Enforcers - which happens to be Jay Baruchel's directorial debut, too. There's also a bunch of news to discuss, as well as the blu-ray releases of the week. It's a lot of garbage, but our pick of the week is the Criterion release of Multiple Maniacs from John Waters. Next week, we'll be back with a review of Chips because there are too many movies we really don't want to see and somehow we're totally okay with Chips. Film Fallout is a weekly podcast about film and television.
