“We got it all, and we show it all!” shouts the Cavalcade of Perversion ringmaster Mr. David (David Lochary) to a crowd of curious carnival goers in director John Waters' 1970 underground feature Multiple Maniacs. Inside the Cavalcade's tent is an array of performers in various states of undress, engaged in activities that are viewed as obscene or perverse by the conservative suburban audience. Though Waters has utilized shock and showmanship to market his films, the scene acknowledges an uncomfortable truth about the American entertainment industry. American filmmakers lure moviegoers by appealing to their visceral rather than their intellectual sensibilities. They offer movies with familiar, traditional plot structures and cartoonishly simplistic characters, enhanced by gratuitous violence, exaggerated drama, and uncontextualized nudity.
Emilio, Madeline, and Julian welcome their first guest Anthony Hollock for a “Close-Up” on the life and work of the one and only Divine. For the final episode in their “Perceptions of Sanity” cycle, the group look at Divine's career-spanning collaboration with John Waters with a focus on Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, Polyester, and Hairspray, while making some stops along the way to discuss turns in non-Waters films such as Lust in the Dust and Trouble in Mind. Hear them trace the arc of Divine's initial bombast to later subtlety, with myriad reactions along the way. Plus, why does Anthony feel like he's lived in a John Waters movie? What record does Pink Flamingos set for Julian? And who in the group was a “hair-hopper”?
Thie week, Eric and Josh discuss: winter weather hitting, Weeping Angels, Daleks, Strike Force Five, Pistol Shrimps Radio, paranormal activity, dubbed vs subbed movies, The Cell, Daft Punk, Bill Plympton, Paycheck, the Batman 89 comic, and more! Plus, they mention the movies screening the week of Friday January 19 - Thursday January 25: The Boy And The Heron, The Holdovers, Multiple Maniacs, Silent Night, and Gloria!

Welcome to The Rad Wrap: a series on series, where Kylie and Elliott explore films with a common thread. This series takes a look at John Waters' cinema, as curated by Metro Cinema, and culminates in a live show of John Waters' Devil's Advocate. In this episode, they navigate the spiral of filth and, along the way, have their hearts stolen by Mink Stole, hit their cinema hard no line, appreciate the coalition work, and throw up all the middle fingers. When they see John Waters live, Elliott locks eyes with the Pope of Filth himself (many a time) and the three of them make a sandwich (you'll have to listen to learn what this means!). (Re-)listen to our beautiful conversation with Cassandra Hamilton-Brown, including an extended look at Cry-Baby.The films in the series are: Female Trouble (1974), Pink Flamingos (1972), Cry-Baby (1990), Serial Mom (1994), Multiple Maniacs (1970), Hairspray (1988), and Polyester (1981).Follow along onInstagram: @baddad.raddadLetterboxd: kylieburton Letterboxd: ElliottKuss Hosted on Acast. Blood Feast (1963), Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964), The Gruesome Twosome (1967), The Wizard of Gore (1970) When Herschell Gordon Lewis made his first nudie cutie film in 1961, nobody would have expected that he'd become one of the most important names in the history of horror. But with the release of Blood Feast just two years later, Lewis and his producing partner David F. Friedman would invent the gore subgenre and would fundamentally reshape horror as we knew and understood it. And for about a decade after it, Lewis would continue to release gore-obsessed fare to grindhouses and drive-ins across the nation. When those sorts of theaters started to fade away in the 70s, so did Lewis, who went back to his previous career in advertising. But in the 80s and beyond his fame was resuscitated on home video and in the pages of magazines like Fangoria and Deep Red where he became known as The Godfather of Gore. With some help from Christopher Wayne Curry, author of A Taste of Blood: The Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis, we dive into four of his films and manage to talk about a whole slew of others. Movies mentioned in this episode: Bell, Bare and the Beautiful (1963), Blood Diner (1987), Blood Feast (1963), Blood Feast (2016), Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat (2002), Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Boin-n-g (1963), Color Me Blood Red (1965), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Gore Gore Girls (1972), Gruesome Twosome (1967), I Drink Your Blood (1971), Intolerance (1916), Jigoku (1960), Mardi Gras Massacre (1978), Moonshine Mountain (1964), Multiple Maniacs (1970), Night of the Living Dead (1968), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Pit Stop (1969), Polyester (1981), Scream Baby Scream (1969), Scum of the Earth (1963), A Taste of Blood (1967), Tarantula (1955), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Serial Mom (1994), This Stuff'll Kill Ya! (1971), Three on a Meathook (1972), Two Thousand Maniacs (1964), Wizard of Gore (1970), Year of the Yahoo! (1971)
"One must remember that there is such a thing as good bad taste and bad bad taste." — John Waters In our new series, John Waters: Divine Filth, we'll be exploring the stories behind Waters' early films, specifically the films made during the years when he collaborated with his muse, the legendary drag performer Divine. During the nearly two decades that they made films together, Waters' films moved from the fringes, with underground short films like HAG IN A BLACK LEATHER JACKET and EAT YOUR MAKEUP, to the multiplexes, with their mainstream breakthrough HAIRSPRAY. In this episode, we'll tell the story of Waters' early years growing up in Baltimore, how he began making films with likeminded misfits (his regular troupe of cast and crew, The Dreamlanders), and through the production of his first narrative feature of note, MULTIPLE MANIACS. Critic, writer, and film historian Nora MacIntyre joins Aaron to discuss John Waters's 1994 satire 'Serial Mom' starring Kathleen Turner as the titular murderous matriarch. Topics include Waters's exploitation origins and the film's ties to splatter maven Herschell Gordon Lewis, the movie's brilliant send-up of the capitalist patriarchal structures of modernity, and the immediate prescience of the story's exploration of true crime obsession in the wake of the O.J. Simpson trial. Follow Nora MacIntyre on Twitter.Read Nora's work at her website, Notoriously Nora.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Ghosts, Nazis, and mutated bears! Oh my! Last Halloween we picked our favourite horror movies from each decade. However, any list of great horror movies will always be incomplete, so this year we're reviewing ones we overlooked. In the first of three parts, we review horror from the 1970's. Spoilers for the following: Multiple Maniacs (1970), The Crazies (1973), The Stepford Wives (1975), Hausu (1977), Martin (1978), The Boys from Brazil (1978), Prophecy (1979). Edited by DJ Panda. Thank God that Peaches Christ and Michael Varrati of the Midnight Mass podcast joined us for our third jump into the works of John Waters. Otherwise our conversation would lack a noticeable measure of knowledge, context, insight, wit, and depth. Which is what this film deserves. If you'd like to watch ahead for next week's film, we will be discussing and reviewing Max Ophüls' La Ronde (1950).
This week's guest Robert Saucedo, film-buyer of The Alamo Drafthouse, welcomes us to mid-80s, small-town Texas as commented upon by Talking Heads lyrics and the deadpan, obliquely humorous observations of David Byrne. John Goodman heads a cast of highly idiosyncratic, so-weird-they're-normal/so-normal-they're-weird characters honoring the state's sesquicentennial by putting on their own “Celebration of Specialness.” If you'd like to watch ahead for next week's film, we will be discussing and reviewing John Waters' Multiple Maniacs (1970).
Happy pride, let's get filthy! This week, Louie and Gavin travel deep into the sick, artistic world of the Pope of Trash, as they take a deep dive into the films of John Waters! From the Multiple Maniacs that make up his Dreamlanders, to the every day horrors hiding behind suburban Pink Flamingos, Polyester fabrics, and gallons of Hairspray! Tom's guest today is John Waters. He's the director of 16 films, a visual artist with museum shows to his credit, a spoken word artist who performs in venues around the world, an actor, and a pitchman for haute couture. He is also a Son of Baltimore and one of America's most original and enduring voices in the arts, with a deep artistic palette. His early films in the 1970s —Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingosand Female Trouble — earned him monikers like “The King of Sleaze,” “The Pope of Trash,” “The Duke of Dirt,” and the classic, “Prince of Puke.” It should also be noted, BTW, that when it comes to names, the French Government calls him "an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters." His visual art has been featured in museum shows, he's been nominated for a Grammy and his 1988 film, Hairspray, was adapted as a musical that won 8 Tony Awards. As an actor, he has a role in this season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and he will be touring his stand-up show in the fall. Waters is the author of several books of non-fiction, including his memoir, Mr. Know It All, a road trip diary called Carsick, and his compendium of profiles of people who have influenced his work, Role Models. His non-fiction commentary is fascinating, funny, insightful and often a bit outrageous. Waters's latest book is his first novel, a book that dials up the outrageousness in a big, wild way. His protagonist is as despicable as they come, and the entourage of people in her orbit are as odd as anyone we encountered in the cult classic movies John Waters made more than 50 years ago. The novel is called Liarmouth, which Waters describes as a “feel-bad romance.” John Waters joins Tom on our digital line from his home in Baltimore. You are welcome to join us as well. Things get controversial when Jim and his guest, Bill from Queens tackle the casting dustup from the new musical, In the Heights. Not the same controversy, but perhaps a little controversial is Jim actually likes the new Marvel show, Loki. Hear his take. The last part of this episode focuses on three early works from shockmaster, John Waters. Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, and Female Trouble are all playing on Criterion Channel, and if you have never seen them, and have the stomach for some outrageousness, then you owe it to yourself to check them out.
Caleb, Eric, and Sean return for their first episode away from the realm of Exorcist films, this time turning their eyes back to another 70s film with John Waters first feature, Multiple Maniacs. Caleb and Sean have long been fans of Waters' other works, but both are virgins to this particular picture. Whereas Eric is coming in entirely blind to this avenue of film. What will your hosts think of this out there flick? Grab a few drinks, settle into your seats and hit play to find out. This episode was recorded on April 23rd, 2021. "It's been awhile"! We are back. Our old friend Tim Munroe returns to the show to discuss John Waters' gloriously perverse and hilarious, MULTIPLE MANIACS (1970). We also discuss marriage, Bruce and Obama being true rebels, vaccines, Johnny Depp, and erotic Garfield fan fiction. Also, Tim Munroe accuses me of being pro-censorship. Listen to hear it all go down.
John Waters - Examining the Genre-Bending & Culture-Crashing Art of a Filth Icon Has there ever been a figure in popular (or even underground) culture quite like Baltimore's John Waters? I would argue that Mr. Waters is a unique and essential artist in the history of American Cinema. From his early days as an underground filmmaker with such classics as Multiple Maniacs (1970), Female Trouble (1974), and - of course - 1972's Pink Flamingos, thru his mainstream breakthroughs, including Hairspray (1988), Cry-Baby (1990), and Serial Mom (1994), Waters - over a period of 50 years - has been a truly visionary artist. These are not easy films to watch, but they were never meant to be. Waters' work has always been a kind of litmus test determining "squareness", hypocrisy, and narrow-mindedness. If you have a problem with Waters, then most likely your an uptight prick. John Waters - along with a loyal production crew (Pat Moran, Vincent Peranio, Van Smith) and stable of actors (Mink Stole, David Lochary, Edith Massey, and - later - Ricki Lake, Patty Hearst, Traci Lords) defined the "Midnight Movie" and subversive cinema. All of this was made possible through Waters' culture-challenging attack and his collaboration with the iconic Drag Queen, Harris Glenn Milstead, better known as Divine (1945-1988). A fantastic documentary - I Am Divine - profiles the life and times of the great performer. This was a lot of fun. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks.

Decades before becoming a beloved elder statesman and the darling of Broadway with Hairspray, John Waters and his troop of Dreamlanders ushered in the 1970’s with their first all talking feature film Multiple Maniacs! Taking inspiration from the thriving art and underground film scene from the era, as well as healthy doses of radical politics, deranged Hollywood glamour and the drive-in movie shock value of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Waters was setting the stage for a series of midnight movies that featured acts so limitlessly tasteless the censors had been too unimaginative and unprepared to previously outlaw. You will be shocked by the degenerates in Lady Divine’s Cavalcade of Perversion. You will puke as you witness the Stations of the Cross as never before. You will forever quake with fear whenever you encounter a lobster.
Lee and Leah check out a film Leah suggested for the podcast - and a film that is a shameful blind spot in Lee's trash movie viewing - "Multiple Maniacs" (1970). It's John Waters' first talkie, and features the incomparable talents and screen presence of Divine. Is it too transgressive for its time? Is it too tame these days? Should it be embraced by the LGBTQ community despite some of the less PC content? What's a rosary job? Tune in to find out. "Multiple Maniacs" IMDB Featured Music: "Endless Sleep" by Jody Reynolds & "Wildwood" by Sil Austin.
The fabulous and talented Mink Stole is here! She delights us with a walk down memory lane, telling us all about working alongside Divine in John Waters’ cult-(now)classics such as Mondo Trasho, Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Desperate Living, Hairspray, Cry-Baby, and Serial Mom. On this episode, we talk about early John Waters filth-fest MULTIPLE MANIACS!
Is there a better way to celebrate this week than with John Waters exploring the holiest of holies in his electric 1970 film Multiple Maniacs? The Crit Club doesn't think so. This blasphemous bit of counter culture celluloid set us talking about everything from queer cinema, Waters' legacy and the history in which this side show was made. It's rosaries and lobsters all the way down, folks. Other things we discussed: - Pink Flamingos - Totally F***ed Up - Seven States to Achieve Eternal Bliss - Pen 15 - Nate: A One Man Show - Bad Hair - Indiscrete - Spanish Princess - A Kitty Cocktail Party (again) Join us next week, in the midsts of these holidays, when we'll lighten the mood with 1938's Holiday. Warning: this Golden Age rom com, starring Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn will feature little to no fornication.
Oh ho! Looks like Louis Malle wants to send Crit Club down the rabbit hole with Black Moon, his 1975 surrealist contemplation on innocence and maturity. But will the acclaimed director of My Dinner With Andre succeed, or will his playful, animal-laden exercise fail to charm the Club? Find out by listening! Other things we talk about in this episode: - Holy Mountain - El Topo - Schitt's Creek - Mullholland Drive - Taxi Driver - mother! - The Pathless - A Very Kitty Cocktail Party - Virgin River - Big Mouth And join us next week, when we'll stare into the abyss of John Waters' imagination with his 1970 movie Multiple Maniacs.
John Waters, the King (Queen?) of Schlock, is a favorite for ONE of our hosts, while the other is still just getting used to the wild auteur. Waters' feature debut, Multiple Maniacs, is a very mixed bag, but one with a TON of character and style, even if it's not what many people would consider good. Enjoy!
The Pope of Trash, film director John Waters started his career 50 years ago by lampooning conservative America with his campy films like Pink Flamingos and Multiple Maniacs. He almost made bad taste mainstream. Could he do the same today?
Bobbie Jo returns to our show with Divine's "My First Album," a collection of outrageous, outrageously danceable tracks, which accompanied Divine's move from feature film stardom (Pink Flamingos, Polyester, Female Trouble, Multiple Maniacs) to club performer. They're just as much fun, and just as wild as the celluloid performances, so join Barry and Bobbie Jo as they gush over this amazing person and performer. Andy Ruffner from the World AIDS Museum joins us to introduce the official kick-off to World AIDS DAY on December 1, 2020 hosted by The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale.
on this episode I look at two John Waters films staring Divine who would turned 75 this year. Multiple Maniacs from 1970 and Polyester from 1981. voicemail : 732-639-1435 Email: Motionpicturemassacre@gmail.com

"She's a Maniac, Määä-niac on the floor!"

Divine plays a freakshow performer with a violent streak in "Multiple Maniacs." Next, directed by the guy who brought us "Rambo" and "Weekend at Bernie's," comes "Wake in Fright" -- an Ozploitation classic about a teacher who devolves into a debaucherous creep while on Christmas break. Finally, Nick Cage plays a guy with some kind of accent in "Con Air." You know this movie. A bunch of actors you like are shirtless on a plane. No one knows more about everything—especially everything rude, clever, and offensively compelling—than John Waters. He joined us for a discussion of his new book Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder. Town Hall invited you to a conversation with Waters, joined onstage by writer David Schmader, that spans the breadth of his incredible and eclectic knowledge, fielding questions of every variety and exploring the idiosyncrasies of life. In Mr. Know-It-All, he offered insight on everything under the sun: how to fail upward in Hollywood; how to develop musical taste from Nervous Norvus to Maria Callas; how to build a home so ugly and trendy that no one but you would dare live in it; how to tell someone you love them without emotional risk; and even how to cheat death. Through it all, Waters swears by one undeniable truth: “Whatever you might have heard, there is absolutely no downside to being famous. None at all.” Listen in for a deep conversation drawing on a lifetime of experience from a master of transgressive film. We bow down to the king of cult this week on sick on cinema as take a look at three classics From John Waters. The movies we are covering are Multiple Maniacs, Pink Flamingos, and Female Trouble.
Trim your mustaches pencil-thin for the first director-centric episode of the Rad Carpet! Thom, Whalen, and CJ 5000 punch their tickets to sunny, filthy Baltimore for the first of two discussions on the early work of cult icon John Waters, starting with his recently restored “talkie” debut Multiple Maniacs and his notorious midnight-movie classic Pink Flamingos. But first, the Carpeteers play a little “In or Out?”, unfurling their takes on a trio of modern Hollywood mainstays: Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson, and Reese Witherspoon.
On the occasion of Criterion Collection's home video release of Multiple Maniacs and the publication of his new book Make Trouble, Violet Lucca chats with John Waters—the director, writer, artist, sometime actor (most recently of FX's Feud: Bette and Joan), and Christmas card sender extraordinaire. Waters talks about the freedom of writing across multiple media, film critic Parker Tyler, his early days abusing zoom lenses and getting arrested for Mondo Trasho, and how his bad taste movement has been folded into the mainstream, from reality television to raunchy Hollywood comedies, to the current occupant of the White House. Waters called in from his home in Baltimore (where there's a special word tailor-made for the likes of Trump).
SIFFcast has a special treat for you as we talk to the acclaimed filmmaker John Waters, director of Multiple Maniacs, about his film being in theaters again.
Movie Meltdown - Episode 390 This week we talk with the one, the only - John Waters. Now is he intrinsically evil? Well, we'd say no. But the Censor Board may have a different answer. Or The Baltimore Police Department. Or certain Canadian film distributors. Or... well, there's probably a lot of people. Listen as we revisit stories of his early days of shooting films in his hometown, specifically, the newly restored and rereleased Multiple Maniacs. And just how this kid from Baltimore got together with his friends and inadvertently came to offend so many people over the years. But along with these crazy stories comes some wisdom. So as John goes out into the world and talks to people today... does he hold the key to living an interesting and fulfilling life? Listen and find out for yourself. And as we bask in the cultured luster of Janus Films presents, we also discuss... The Cavalcade Of Perversion... on their front lawn, shooting on 16mm, it's like a hostage video, smoking pot and taking acid, lobsters are scary, the Theatre of the Absurd, tawdry, they look like snuff movies, it was my monster movie and Divine was the monster, there was no art direction in there, Edward Albee, in black and white, we were all kids that were in trouble in suburbia, There were no laws really against that, the Theatre of the Absurd, that was a friend of mine that was a junkie, I was just so thrilled you could see it and hear it, oh God no wonder my parents were uptight, she started sobbing and screaming, we weren't really like that... but our humor was really like that, the judge read us a poem, in my LSD'ed mind at the time, with those two big Mickey Mouse ears, we wanted to be hippies and beatniks, magnetic stripe sound, which at that time was fairly radical, the stations of the cross, it was a joke on an exploitation movie, she was kind of goth before there was such a thing, Conspiracy To Commit Indecent Exposure and Lobstora. Spoiler Alert: While we talk extensively about Multiple Maniacs, I'm pretty sure you can't really 'spoil' that movie. You just need to see it yourself to truly experience it. So go watch Multiple Maniacs! "We didn't have permits, we didn't ask to shoot. We just hit and run!"
Extreme Wolf Dentistry with the Shaw Brothers This week's show is all about action! After an explosive Question of the Week we move onto Off the Shelf featuring the anarcho-feminist bomb-heaving action of Second Run's new release "My Twentieth Century", the retro rubbery gore of British indie horror "The Void", and, erm, a very different kind of action in a church pew in Criterion's reissue of John Waters's filth odyssey "Multiple Maniacs". Is 'distracting the vicar' more or less dirty than it sounds? We'll leave you to decide while we crouch behind piles of rubble for our Film of the Week, "Free Fire" - Ben Wheatley's glorious ode to violence against both people and fashion. www.thegeekshow.co.uk #news #reviews #movies #films #cinemaeclectica #thegeekshow #secondrundvd #brielarson #freefire #benwheatley #thevoid #horror #criterion #johnwaters
Welcome to a much-talked about movie that Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan finally get to review: The Devil's Candy. After years of Chris hyping it up, it finally has been released and we take our time going through Sean Byrne's follow-up to The Loved Ones. How does it compare to his previous film, both in quality and tonally? Why do we feel bad for Pruitt Taylor Vince? Will there ever be another horror movie that handles metal with this much class? This and so much more await you in the podcast below. But wait, there's more! Nobody remakes like Gaston! Which is why Chris saw Beauty & The Beast to see how the live action adaptation of the Disney classic holds up. He also saw The Chamber, the directorial debut of Ben Parker which takes place entirely in a small submarine. Meanwhile, Dylan saw the sequel to the surprise hit, Goon, entitled Goon: Last of the Enforcers - which happens to be Jay Baruchel's directorial debut, too. There's also a bunch of news to discuss, as well as the blu-ray releases of the week. It's a lot of garbage, but our pick of the week is the Criterion release of Multiple Maniacs from John Waters. Next week, we'll be back with a review of Chips because there are too many movies we really don't want to see and somehow we're totally okay with Chips. Film Fallout is a weekly podcast about film and television. Every week, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan discuss news happening in the industry, blu-ray releases coming out this week, what they’ve been watching, and then a review of one movie. You can listen to it on SoundCloud, iTunes, or on BagoGames. Also follow us on Instagram for some behind-the-scenes magic. We are both on Twitter, if you’d like to follow us there. Chris is @HammerkopCross, Dylan is @DreaminDylanS, and you can follow the podcast @Filmfalloutcast. And finally, there is a Facebook page for the podcast if you’d like to ‘like’ us on that.

With Antonia Quirke. Director and agent provocateur John Waters reveals why his straight-laced parents paid for one of the most outrageous movies in American film history, Multiple Maniacs. First there was crowd funding and now there's crowd building. Antonia visits Newcastle's The Star And Shadow, which is being built by volunteers from the local community, who make up for in enthusiasm what they lack in experience. Could you watch a whole movie where feet are the stars ? Andy Robinson has just made a film with no faces or voices or anything above the ankle. He discusses the challenges of keeping his camera and his feet on the ground.
On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Film podcast, White Reindeer director and regular Talkhouse Film contributor Zach Clark sits down with one of his filmmaking idols, John Waters, whose second feature Multiple Maniacs is now on release in a beautifully restored new version. Clark and Waters' highly entertaining conversation touches on such topics as Waters' encounters with people as diverse as Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Justin Bieber, the theatrical stunts he used to pull to get publicity for his films, why he loves Terrence Malick's movies (even though he really shouldn't), his mother's reaction to seeing his first film, recent movies he and Clark have enjoyed, and much more.
