Nate grew up in Colorful Colorado, and as far as he can remember, he has always been around good beer. He worked as a bartender and restaurant manager during and after college, and after graduating from the University of Colorado in 2002 with a degree in International Affairs, he decided that the regular 9-5 behind a desk wasn't really his thing. In 2009, he started working at Oskar Blues brewery on the brewery and hospitality side, and in 2012, he took a job with Green Flash Brewing as their Midwest district manager. He has done everything from a street rep, to district manager, to become a top regional sales manager. And he has worked at small breweries from 800 barrels per year, all the way to the Top 50 national breweries. Since August of 2019,  he has worked with one of the top 20 Brewery in the mountain west, Epic Brewing in Denver, where he manages sales across Colorado, Southwest, Midwest, and East Coast distribution. Jeff is joined by Lord Chandler, Chuck Silva, co-founder and brewmaster of Silva Brewing and Pat McIlhenney, part-owner of Mcilhenney Brewing Company in part two of Colby’s three-part anniversary series. The hop-fathers of brewing look back on how homebrewing brought them together, their careers before brewing became full time, and the San Diego establishments they’ve had the pleasure of working at over the years. They talk about West Cost IPAs (how could a bunch of San Diego brewers not?) and their introduction to brewing hop heavy beers. New Realm Brewing Co. is booming on the Beltline In early 2018, New Realm Brewing Co. opened on the Beltline in the heart of Atlanta.  Co-founders Carey Falcone, Bob Powers, and Mitch Steele aren't new to the beer business.  Falcone and Powers have worked various roles in the industry for over 25 years.  Steele managed fermentation for three breweries as well as new beer development at Anheuser-Busch, and prior to starting New Realm, he was the Brewmaster for Stone Brewing in California.  Steele helped define the West Coast IPA style and authored a book on the subject, IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipe, and the Evolution of India Pale Ale.  With a power team and a prime location, New Realm has seen explosive growth in their short six-month existence. With the unfortunate shuttering of Green Flash Brewing in Virginia Beach, New Realm seized an opportunity to grow quickly.  They purchased the brewery assets of the location and later worked a multi-year lease on the building.  Their soon-to-open Virginia brewery will allow New Realm to increase production as well as innovate new beers.  And then there's Charlotte.  After opening in Atlanta, a building they'd previously considered in Charlotte became available at a deal "too good to pass up", they purchased it.  Falcone shares a bit with us this week on what's going to happen in Virginia Beach and what the plans are for Charlotte. With Steele's masterful knowledge of IPA, we had to pick his brain on the subject.  We discuss the early days of American craft beer, how quickly its grown in a relatively short time period, the evolution of IPA, trends and fads, and whether or not he'll brew a NE Milkshake Smoothie Glitter IPA.  (Spoiler: No.  Definitely no.)
