Book Vs. Movie: The Night of the HunterThe 1953 Novel Vs. the 1955 Classic MovieDavis Grubb's 1953 novel *The Night of the Hunter* and its 1955 film adaptation by Charles Laughton offer haunting interpretations of a sinister preacher, Harry Powell, and two children fleeing him. The novel delves deeper into Powell's twisted morality and religious fanaticism. At the same time, the film, featuring Robert Mitchum, presents him as a symbolic figure of evil with striking visual elements, including his "LOVE" and "HATE" tattoos. The book maintains a grounded, psychological tone, while the movie employs a surreal, expressionist style to illustrate the battle between good and evil. Which version did we (the Margos) prefer? A vadász éjszakája (The Night of the Hunter, 1955) a saját korában óriásit bukott, de mára elvitathatatlan jelentőségű film noir-thriller klasszikussá vált. Robert Mitchum, a legendásan nehezen kezelhető főszereplő a saját alakításai közül is a legjobbnak tartotta Harry Powell szerepét. Az adásunkban Szász Attila filmrendezővel (A berni követ, Félvilág, Apró mesék, Örök tél, Hunyadi) beszélgettünk A vadász éjszakája máig érezhető hatásáról. Milyen formabontó attitűddel érkezett a forgatásra a sikeres színházi rendezői, illetve filmszínészi karrierrel Laughton? Mik azok a megoldások A vadász éjszakájában, amelyek fantasztikusan jól öregedtek, és mik hatnak ma kizökkentően furcsán? Beszélünk arról, kik azok a rendezők, akiknek a munkásságán sikerült tetten érnünk Laughton hatását, kezdve Martin Scorsese több alkotásától (Taxisofőr, A rettegés foka) Tarsem Singhen át William Friedkinig? Mik azok a film noir műfaji sajátosságok, amiket Charles Laughton merészen használt, és mik azok, amiket teljesen sutba dobott? Hogyan feszegette a műfaji kereteket a képeivel és a szimbólumaival? Szász Attila beszél arról is, hogy a hasonló felütésű Apró mesékben hogyan éltek a stilizáció adta lehetőséggel, amit a film noir nyújtott számukra. The Night Of The Hunter is Exhibit A when you talk about films that are revered more now than they were when they came out. To many, this KEEPS getting better every time they see it. We're fans too. Charles Laughton was better known as a clever actor, but this was his directorial debut. For a first-time director, he pulled off a stylish allegory and scary fairy tale that's filled with surreal images. He and his team used light & shadows brilliantly. Now, we didn't love some of the performances and we took issue with the title of the film, although we have a theory about who really is the hunter. There's no questioning Robert Mitchum's work though. This is as vicious a villain as the tough guy ever played. He's a supposed man of god who's really just a violent misogynist who casually kills women...although in this story, he's motivated by money. Run away, kids! Billy Chapin and Sally Jane Bruce have as much screen-time as Mitchum does---although a very-effective Shelley Winters sure doesn't---in this chase/horror river voyage that deepens once Lillian Gish comes on the scene. So sit on the porch with a shotgun and abide the children---especially those with clandestine money---as our 533rd episode sees what's up in this Depression-era, child-endangerment movie. Well, Actually: James Agee's Pulitzer Prize was for his 1957 autobiography called A Death In The Family. Also, we didn't get into this, but is Harry Powell actually a reverend...or is he lying about that too? Sparkplug Coffee is our sponsor.
“Like some macabre beaver” The panel of peril crack their knuckles revealing just how ruddy tattooed those very joints are: LOVE? HATE? Yes, that's what they say, can you believe it? Then they watch Night of the Hunter before trying to improve upon the villain's diabolical plan for the honour of choosing next week's film and hosting the pod. Night of the Hunter (1955) is film actor Charles Laughton's lone directorial effort and casts Robert Mitchum as dodgy preacher Harry Powell as he arrives in town to try and find the money former cellmate Ben Harper has hidden on his wife and children's farmland. Will Powell find the cash, and what depths will he stoop to in order to gain it? Watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8dX6ZKJe2o ********PLOT SPOILER ALERT******** Ingratiating himself into the Harper family by marrying then murdering matriarch Willa, Harry knows the way to the money is by getting the information from children John and Pearl. When they escape his clutches just how will he find them and by extension the wonga? What did the panel think of this week's movie? How in all that is holy can they improve upon the villain's masterplan? And which evil schemer will be christened this week's most diabolical? With a slight lull coming between awards season and blockbuster season, Wade and Kevin pause for a retro review of a film regarded by many critics as the best directorial one-off in cinema history. Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter offers an iconic villain in Robert Mitchum's Harry Powell, a corrupt preacher in Depression-era West Virginia who sets his sights on a widow and her two children in the hope of claiming a $10,000 windfall that is hidden somewhere in their home. Part thriller, part American fairy tale, and part expressionist visual feast, the film gives the guys plenty to dig into, from its shadowy cinematography to its unique commentary on religion at its worst and its best. Special thanks to show supporter Eric Johnson for selecting this film for us to review!

At this milestone of episode 30, I have the pleasure of talking with Harry Powell, Director of Data & Analytics for Jaguar Land Rover. As well as hearing Harry's career journey, we explore a wide range of topics from graph databases to better thinking & team productivity to generating profit. Harry's wealth of hands-on experience shines through as we explore both technical challenges & the greater need for what Harry calls "imaginative thinking". Lots of useful advice for data leaders & analysts. Lessons learnt about the need to prioritise skills in problem scoping (simplification & achieving clarity) as well why a more commercial focus may help your team. Harry ends with the benefits of putting yourself under pressure & takes the opportunity to be controversial a few times before then. A great opportunity to pick Harry's considerable brain, which I hope you find helpful. Apologies for the poor sound quality at times, but the practical wisdom Harry shares makes it worth persisting. Enjoy!

There are many myths about recovery from a heart attack. The most dangerous is that exercise is too risky. The truth is that for most people, they should be doing much more exercise, not less. Patrick Doherty, Professor of Cardiovascular Health at York University and lead author for the National Audit of Cardiac Rehab tells Dr Mark Porter that 70,000 people who should be accessing life saving cardiac rehabilitation therapy are missing out. The answer? Don't blame the patients but improve the design of rehab packages, he says. Inside Health visits a rehab session at Charing Cross Hospital in London and hears from cardiac patients about the impact of supported exercise programmes on their health. A group of psychiatrists, psychologists and patients have complained to the Royal College of Psychiatrists about the withdrawal effects of antidepressants. They say claims that side effects are resolved, for the majority of patients, within a few weeks of stopping treatment are false and in fact, many people suffer unpleasant, frightening symptoms for much longer. Inside Health's Dr Margaret McCartney looks at the evidence. We're all familiar with hearing aids, amplifiers which boost volume in a failing ear. And you might have heard of cochlear implants which, in people too deaf for aids, can be used to send signals directly to the inner part of the ear, and on to the brain.
