In this episode of Hilary Topper on Air, Hilary speaks with Jim Heese, CEO of Headsweats. Learn about Jim's background, Headsweats, and what's in store for the brand in the year ahead. In addition, hear how Headsweats is sponsoring the Denver/Boulder leg of Hilary's nationwide book tour for From Couch Potato to Endurance Athlete in February next year. About Headsweats Headsweats Perspiration Technology Headwear® was founded in the winter of 1998 by shoe industry veteran and obsessed cyclist, Alan Romick. Frustrated by the perils of heavy sweat blindness, migrating sunscreen, and odd sunburn pattern on his head through his helmet, he set out to develop headgear that worked. Encouraged by the constant feedback within the local cycling community, he took the best attributes of what was available and improved on them. Starting with one product -- The Cotton Classic -- available at first in just four colors, Alan's products quietly became elite athletes' secret weapon around the world, eventually expanding to over 17 different products available in over 140 different colors and styles. After appearing on a Tour de France rider on the front of the New York Times sports section, that secret weapon became an open secret and soon Headsweats were running in and winning Ironman Kona, The Head of the Charles Regatta, countless marathons, and bike races around the world. With well over a million hats delivered, Headsweats now has more triathlon finishers and podiums than any other headwear company. Today the Headsweats line includes washable, airlight, supremely wicking hats that now dominate the triathlon, rowing, and adventure racing worlds. The success and a spirit of innovation at Headsweats, along with unsurpassed customer service, helped to establish Headsweats as the front-runner in a very competitive cycling category. Alan continues to work relentlessly to bring the most cutting-edge, advanced, and fun headwear products to new markets for construction workers, chefs, police forces, snow-boarders, and marathoners alike. Moreover, that it was the inaugural edition of the women's French Grand Tour called the Tour de France Féminin.  It was a 1,083 kilometer, 18 stage race that ran concurrent with the men's event.   The Dutch national team was heavily favored, with its leader Heleen Hage featuring prominently as the race's likely winner.  Little did anyone expect that an underdog American team with an unknown rider by the name of Martin would triumph.   Martin continued her strong ascending and captured the malliot jaune (yellow jersey) after the 14th stage and never looked back. Martin lead the Tour de France Féminin into Paris, marking the first and last time an American would stand on the top step of the podium.  Women Cyclists Change Tour de France Forever - The Washington Post Tour de France féminin 1984 Stage 18 results (procyclingstats.com) What Happened to the Women's Tour de France? | ... (totalwomenscycling.com)   Let's get into our interview with Marianne Martin!     Post interview discussion: Red Zinger / Coors Classic Didn't know anything about racing   Quote at 24 minutes and 45 minutes       From 1984 to 1989, the Tour de France Women was the curtain raising event for the men's event. It was organised by the Tour de France Society, organiser of the men's Tour de France. In 1990, the event changed its name and format, becoming the Tour of the EEC Women, which ran until 1993.   In 1992, a new race was created, the Tour cycliste féminin, organised in August by Pierre Boué. The race lacked stable sponsorship and with the location of stages determined by locations willing to contribute, there were long transfers between stages. Until 1998, it was the Tour Cycliste Féminin, but the Société du Tour de France, organizers of the men's Tour de France, said that infringed their trademark and in 1999 the name was changed.[2] It resumed under the name Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale, but was not held in 2004 because of organisational difficulties. It returned, smaller, in 2005. The previous tours were 10 to 15 stages; later ones had five and stayed in one region. The race also received a lower classification by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), and had a reduced field. In 2008, the race was six days and seven stages. However, in 2009 the race was only four days long with only 66 riders, after a planned race start and three stages in Britain fell through, leading winner Emma Pooley to joke that the race was "more of a Petite Boucle than Grande."[3][4] The race was discontinued after 2009.   France was left with no major women's stage race after the Tour de l'Aude Cycliste Féminin and the Route de France Féminine finished in 2010 and 2016 respectively.  For the last few years the race turned into a 1 day event titled La Course (La Course by Le Tour de France 2021 (cyclingnews.com)).   In 2022, the race is to return, with eight stages.  Zwift will be the main sponsor.     Our News is sponsored by Buddy Insurance. When being asked about trying to win the Tour, which he so nearly did in 2019, "Never say never," was the answer.   "Why not think about it before the end of my career?" he continued. "There are a lot of questions to be asked and I'd need to speak to the team. But I don't want to end my time with the regret of not ever trying."   In 2019 Alaphilippe led the race for 14 days, only losing the jersey twice, once to Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) - who took the jersey from the breakaway on stage six to the top of the Super Planche des Belles Filles before ceding it back to Alaphilippe two days later - and finally to Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) after the Colombian attacked solo on the Col de l'Iseran on stage 19. On that day the general classification times were taken at the top of the Iseran due to mudslides and extreme weather, which forced the race to be stopped before the final climb to Tignes.   "I've never raced a Grand Tour thinking of winning it," Alaphilippe said, "so there wasn't the same pressure. But I can understand why it's been difficult for [Thibaut] Pinot and [Romain] Bardet," Alaphilippe said.   List of all men's winners of the Tour de France https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tour_de_France_general_classification_winners     What's New in the 303:   Headsweats Debuts New Look with Updated Logo and Product BOULDER, Colo. I Could Never Do That

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2017 82:20

  The Running Event made its way back to Austin this past year and this local gal couldn’t have been happier! As their website indicates, The Running Event consists of more than 250 brands including some of the biggest fitness companies on the planet as well as innovative newcomers. It is, as they say, a great opportunity to see new product before any other channel of distribution and meet with key executives at the best suppliers to the run specialty channel. It’s also the chance for the fitness-oriented companies to discuss industry trends and strategize with each other through changing times and shifting buying habits. For a fitness enthusiast, podcast and writer like me, it’s the chance to go behind the curtains, catch a glimpse and sample what’s to come. I also see it as an opportunity to highlight companies, old and new, who are working diligently to improve our well-being, safety, comfort, recovery and fitness potential. In talking to business owners, marketing gurus and salespeople, you see their true passion for what they do. If we don't invest in the future of our own health and fitness, what can we invest in?  Even though I learned about a variety of products from footwear, to nutrition, to compression, to bras, one thing rings true from all of the vendors and companies - they care about the end user. In fact, these days, so much of their marketing depends on it. Positive word of mouth carries more weight than any ad campaign in a magazine ever will. That’s why I’m honored to share my positive experience with many of the booths I visited at The Running Event. So many welcomed me into their space to share their stories. Some of the products are fairly new, like family-owned maple syrup producers, Untapped. Others are larger companies like this year’s Kona shoe juggernaut, Hoka One One, who seem to have found “their time to fly” as their slogan suggests. Big or small, new or veteran, each company had a human element and, on their behalf, I'd like to share their enthusiasm. This isn’t so much a review of products because, the way I see it, every one of those companies is doing good. My only regret is that I didn’t get a chance to visit every one of those 250 companies. There's always next year, right?   Here is Part One of my Treasures from TRE! She blogs at noguiltlife.com Follow Patty on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook. DISNEY HALLOWEEN TIPS Disneyland Halloween Party tickets sell out very quickly. So if you are looking to go, be sure to look into tickets in advance. They tend to start selling the tickets around July. If your kids have allergies, Disney World offers a special bag for trick or treating that involves tokens that can be redeemed at specific location for candy and crafts. If you do not plan on going to the Halloween party at the parks you should still be aware of the dates that this is going on in the fall season. The Magic Kingdom park will close at 7pm for regular guests. You don’t need a park ticket to go to the party, so this will be a great opportunity to spend your day outside of the park. With the party ticket you can get into the park three hours early for the event and enjoy some park time. If you are planning to eat at a restaurant before going to the Halloween Party, be sure to make your reservation early so that you are done eating in time to enjoy all of the Halloween fun there is to offer. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Patty loves to wear her Sanuk or Oofos sandals for comfortable walking and her Headsweats visor for sun protection. TIP OF THE WEEK When you are dressing your kids in costumes, keep in mind that they will be getting in and out of rides and walking around alot! Things like long capes and bulky costumes can make that tough. MENTIONED ON THE PODCAST Allergy friendly Disney trick or treating FOLLOW US AND SPREAD THE WORD!
