Researching masters physiology - aging from 50 to 70 affects your rowing. Timestamps 01:00 Guests from Athlone, Ireland Lorcan Daly and Paul Gallen Lorcan is a sport science researcher starting with his grandfather, Richard Morgan who was an erg champion. Uniquely he was sedentary for most of his life, was a smoker and at 73 took up indoor rowing. He was tested aged 92 and some of the tests were on a par with a 30 year old. Three world champion indoor rowers were his next test subjects https://www.rowingireland.ie/why-masters-rowing-is-a-game-changer-for-healthy-ageing/ 04:00 Testing Paul Gallen Dennis and Ken were recruited after winning their divisions at the 2024 World Rowing Indoor Championships. The tests were done over 2 visits - diet, lung and muscle function and sporting history. 06:00 Paul Gallen rejoined masters rowing He took 30 years out of the sport and his first event back was the Head of the Charles Regatta. Learned to scull aged 60 and indoor rowing competitions. His 8s crew includes school friends. For the winter season he does a 10 week lead in to the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships. The three age gaps gave a good framing for the study. 10:00 Most remarkable findings Lorcan found that their muscle oxygen take-up was similar to an Olympic champion. The deterioration over life is much flatter than non-trained people. Paul has 10 years of his splits at the indoor champs 6:59 - 7.14 times over ten year drop off. Paul does daily Yoga for rowers - 12 moves a day. Off season 2 weights; mix of high intensity and longer rowers. At least one high intensity per week. 13:00 General advice on aging well The principles for healthy aging - keep your full body system going is a mix of resistance exercise and the mix of aerobic exercise is key. The two together is the winning formula. 15:00 Returning rowers Paul the big thing about people coming back to rowing - it depends on how busy your life is. Start at recreational level and not commit fully to being in competition. Build up if your life gets less busy. Lorcan's paper is called Toward the Limits of Human Ageing Physiology: Characteristics of the 50+, 60+ & 70+ Male Indoor Rowing Champions Want easy live streams like this? We're at the Head of the Charles Regatta, 2024, day three. I'm pleased to have my last guests with me. I'd like them to introduce themselves, going from left to right."Hey guys, my name is Kory Rogers.""I'm Chris Bak, nice to meet you.""And I'm Peter Choi, nice to meet you."Alright, thank you all. So, we're here at a rowing event on the water, but you guys aren't doing what most people think of when they think of rowing. What do you do?"We all do coastal rowing. Peter's our coxswain."For those who don't know what coastal rowing is, can you explain it?"Coastal rowing is a really dynamic side of the sport. In traditional flat water rowing, you see more 2k or 5k races, like here at the Head of the Charles. For coastal, we do have 4k and 6k racing, which is on the endurance side. But we also have a cool type of racing called beach sprints, which is now in the 2028 Olympics. It's a 500-meter format with some slalom. It's a much shorter, more dynamic race out on the open ocean."Now, having lived in Puerto Rico, I know coastal rowing takes place in the ocean, and I'm not a fan of that! Flipping is not an option, considering you have things waiting for you in the water. You could become a snack if you don't do well! So, talk about how the race starts before you actually get in the boat. For those who are not aware of coastal rowing, they might think you have stake boats like you would in a regular flat water race, but that's not the case. So how is it set up?Types of Coastal Rowing"Good question. There are actually two different types of coastal rowing. The Olympic discipline for LA that Chris mentioned is called beach sprints. If you're in a smaller boat, a single or a double, one of the athletes starts at the archway at the starting line. There's a rope on the sand, and when the buzzer goes off, you sprint anywhere from 50 to 80 meters. In the case of a quad, it'd be the coxswain who sprints. Then you have to jump into the boat and slalom around three buoys and then make your way back. The bow person jumps out and then has to go back to the start line and hit a big red button. It's very action-packed. I like to say it's kind of like the BMX to mountain biking, or the velodrome to rough and tumble cycling. For the Coastal World Championships, the long-distance event, there are variations, but the one I've seen the most is usually a cluster of people kind of waiting, and there's three balls that designate one-minute starting times. So three balls means three minutes. One drops, the second one drops, the last one drops, and then the buzzer goes, and then there really are no lanes. It's like head racing without the stagger. So 20 to 40 boats all kind of converge towards that first buoy. There's a lot of contact.""When people say rowing's not a contact sport, they're not thinking about coastal rowing!"That's interesting. So, I would presume, coming from the world of track and field, you're not going to put your slowest runner at the bow of your boat. If you have a tight race, and your bow person can outrun the other bow person, you can move from bronze to gold, out of medal contention to being a gold medalist, just based on the run. So do you ever actually have races to figure out who's the fastest? So, what happened in 2023?Bak: "Oh yeah, yeah. In the endurance side... I'll let Kory talk about what happened in 2023.""Chris and I did the double for the endurance race. We surprised ourselves leading the race for the first 3k, maybe even 4k. It was a 6k race. The person who was bowing, which was me, got confused because there were two buoys that looked very similar, and I went the wrong way. Thank God we had a built-up lead of maybe about a hundred meters or so. Chris starts looking over at second place, third place, fourth place, and they all start going somewhere else. I'm like, 'Nah, don't even worry about it, they're going the wrong way, let me steer.' And in the end, I was wrong! So we had to cut over really fast. Thank God we were still in front at the turn, but I mean, I probably added like 20, 30 seconds of extra sprint that we did not need to do. All of our built-up cushion was gone. We get passed in the last 150 meters of the row coming into the beach. We're down maybe two, two and a half boat lengths. And I'm like, 'Man, screw this, I'm getting out of the boat.' I jump out early and I beat the Swedish guy running. So a 27-minute race came down to the last second.""He was a big man, huge. Probably 6'6", 220.""Esco, if you're watching, we love you man. You're a crazy guy, hats off to you."I remember seeing that. So, talk about the 500-meter course because some people are not, including myself, as familiar with it. How does it work?"Imagine you're on any pristine, nice beach. You take where the water is coming in from, subtract about 50 to 80 meters, and that's where your start line is going to be. Then you have two flags. Sometimes they have you run around the flag, sometimes they don't, it just depends on the race. You pretty much learn that race day. The reason for that is it can change based off of the tide and conditions. There are three buoys, each placed about 60 to 80 meters apart. You sprint to the boat from the beach, you hit the water, you have to figure out where the boat is, where the oars are. There is a unique position in coastal rowing, in the beach sprint format, of boat handlers. In the past, we've had teammates, coaches, even random people off the side of the street or on the beach come in and hold our boats for us so they don't flop all over the place. After you enter the boat, you're racing towards the first buoy. The first buoy is going to be off your port side. You have to pass the second buoy on your starboard side. At the very end, which is about 250 meters out from the beach, there is a turn buoy. So you have to do a 180-degree turn and then you race straight back to the beach as fast as you can. You jump out of the boat, sprint back onto the beach, run around the flag, and then eventually hit the buzzer."The cox's perspectiveFrom a coxswain's perspective, is it different in beach sprints or coastal rowing than it would be on flat water, doing a 2k or even a 5k here at the Charles?"Yeah, definitely. I would just say it's a different shell. It's so much heavier. It's like 400 pounds, maybe even heavier. That's not the same as what you would normally row on the river. Even though it's heavy, it's made to withstand those crazy waves and conditions. Mother Nature is not a battle you can win against, it's someone you have to adapt to. It's like, are there waves coming? Is there wind coming? You have to make quick adjustments. There's no time for, 'On two, let's do this,' because the race is a little bit over two minutes. The other thing that's interesting is that because it's ...

On a bike ride on an open road in New Jersey in 2011, Ron Gold was struck head-on by an SUV whose driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel even though it was the middle of the day. He barely survived, suffering critical injuries, and was left a paraplegic. It was bad enough the driver was totally unapologetic about causing this tragic event. Ron spent many months in rehab, not to mention wrestling with feelings of despair and hopelessness. After he finally got back home, one thing he learned, which you would likely never find out otherwise, is how challenging it is to find a reliable home health care provider. Ron and I are fellow alumni of the University of Pennsylvania, and leveraging the business acumen he had gleaned both there and in his Wall Street jobs, Ron and his wife Betsy, who had encouraged him to find purpose in his life despite his situation, founded and run LeanOnWe. This organization serves to help pair people in the New York Tri-State area who need home healthcare with screened providers, as well as enable those providers to receive a livable wage, which is often a barrier to many remaining in the profession. LeanOnWe innovatively addresses both of these shortcomings, and has now matched more than 1900 individuals with providers. In the meantime, Ron has charged back in to the athletic world, in both para-rowing, in which he has competed in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, and as a marathoner using a handcycle, where he is roughly horizontal to the ground and “pedals” with his arms. He completed the Hartford Marathon in 2:56, and then improved to 2:42 at the New York City Marathon. Along the way, he has helped the fundraising efforts of Eric LeGrand, the Rutgers football player who was paralyzed in 2010 and is now an inspiring entrepreneur himself. Ron's efforts have helped raise more than $36,000 for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to aid paralysis research and treatment. Ron's story will inspire you how he pushed back against very dark times in his life, found a purpose, and had he not done that, the impacts on others that never would have been possible.Ron GoldLeanOnWe.comrongold@leanonwe.comwww.RonGold.livesubstack.com/@rongoldInstagram and Threads @the_ronniegFacebook and LinkedIn Ron GoldBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

I first met Wendy in 2019, as she was travelling through Europe on holidays on her way to Boston. She gave me a call to ask if she could drop by Switzerland, (as you do:-) to do a spot of training with me, before heading over to race in the US. Wendy has a great story to share, with her journey through Europe, training on a yacht whilst sailing down the Italian coast, her ingenuity to source boats, blades and boathouses to use, staying with wonderful hosts in different cities, and finding races to sharpen up before the big event. Nothing stopped Wendy on her way to racing in the 2019 Head of The Charles regatta and having a great adventure along the way. I hope you enjoy listening to her journey as much as I did. John - Rowing Coach Listen to Susan, interviewing, John, a rowing coach, on a cold December morning in Nottingham, England. Modern rowing as a competitive sport can be traced to the early 18th century when races were held between professional watermen on the River Thames in London, United Kingdom. Often prizes were offered by the London Guilds and Livery Companies. Amateur competition began towards the end of the 18th century with the arrival of "boat clubs" at the British public schools of Eton College and Westminster School. Similarly, clubs were formed at the University of Oxford, with a race held between Brasenose College and Jesus College in 1815. At the University of Cambridge the first recorded races were in 1827. Public rowing clubs were beginning at the same time; in England Leander Clubwas founded in 1818, in Germany Der Hamburger und Germania Ruder Club was founded in 1836 and in the United States Narragansett Boat Club was founded in 1838 and Detroit Boat Club was founded in 1839. In 1843, the first American college rowing club was formed at Yale University. The International Rowing Federation (French: Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d'Aviron, abbreviated FISA) is responsible for international governance of rowing and was founded in 1892 to provide regulation at a time when the sport was gaining popularity. Across six continents there are now 148 countries with rowing federations that participate in the sport. Rowing is one of the oldest Olympic sports. It was on the programme for the 1896 games but the rowing did not take place due to bad weather. It has been competed since 1900. Women's rowing was added to the Olympic programme in 1976. Today, only fourteen boat classes are raced at the Olympics, across men and women. Each year the World Rowing Championships is held by FISA with 22 boat classes raced. In Olympic years only the non-Olympic boat classes are raced at the World Championships. The European Rowing Championships are held annually, along with three World Rowing Cups in which each event earns a number of points for a country towards the World Cup title. Since 2008, rowing has also been competed at the Paralympic Games. Major domestic competitions take place in dominant rowing nations and include The Boat Race and Henley Royal Regatta in the United Kingdom, the Australian Rowing Championships in Australia, the Harvard-Yale Regatta and Head of the Charles Regatta in the United States and Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in Canada. Many other competitions often exist for racing between clubs, schools and universities in each nation.

SUMMARY In The Red Rose Crew, former crew team member and rowing coach, Daniel Boyne, tackles the compelling true story of the female athletes who came together to form the first U.S. Women’s National Crew Team. It was 1975, just when Title IX began to crack open doors to American women in sports and at universities across the nations. This formidable group of tough women battled for international success at the World Championships while also battling for equality at home where sexual prejudice, bureaucracy, and male domination also stood firmly in their path to victory. Fiercely determined to participate in one of the most grueling and competitive sports, this brave crew not only withstood all the rigors of hard training but also fought the uphill battle to take their rightful place as premier athletes. Tapping into each individual’s inner strength, the ingenuous coach Harry Parker (from Harvard’s men crew) also ignited an unlikely but powerful sense of team unity among the women, propelling them to participate in their first Olympic Games in 1976. With raw honesty combined with authentic dramatic tension, Boyne tells "A True Story of Women, Winning, and the Water.” KEY POINTS & CHARACTERS Unbeknownst to many, American rowing has its original roots among the working class. When crews row well, it’s difficult for onlookers to tell just how hard the oarsmen are rowing. The Head of the Charles Regatta – happens every October and the largest race in the world Gail Pierson – brilliant MIT professor and champion sharpshooter; assumes the role of elder statesman and organizer for the women’s team; a pioneer for rowing who suffers the slings and arrows of criticism Carie Graves – stands 6’1” by her sophomore year in high school; the team’s Amazon bohemian; channels her darkest places to compete at her top level, becoming the strong powerhouse of the team Anne Warner – Yale student stronger than most male rowers at Harvard; fierce feminist who takes dramatic measures to get equal amenities and recognition for the team Lynn Sillman – 16-year-old coxswain whose quiet but strong leadership skills steer the team literally and figuratively CLAC – women’s row club began in late 1800s that trained at Mission Bay in San Diego Harry Parker – without aspiring to the role, takes coach position of the first women’s truly competitive crew QUOTES FROM BOYNE “In order to understand competitive rowing, you first had to understand pain. Not the common ordinary sort that visits most people on an occasional basis…the real pain of rowing, the one required for a racing effort, was far more internal and intense.” “A crew coach is utterly useless during a crew race, unable to communicate with his crew. Even if it were possible to talk to them as they raced, it was not permitted.” “Harvard University…had one of the finest facilities in the entire United States, if not the world. “Most of these women had already paid their dues. Most had not only experienced the normal rigors of rowing but had also borne the additional hardships of being denied the basic privileges that came with it. They hadn’t needed to walk into boathouses and prove themselves. They’d had to bang on the doors just to be let in.” “In rowing, explaining the success of an underrated crew is almost as difficult as accounting for the poor performance of a highly rated one.” BUY Red Rose Crew: A True Story Of Women, Winning, And The Water RECOMMENDATIONS BUY the DVD "Miracle" (2004) https://www.nonfiction4life.com/86-fly-girls-by-keith-obrien/ Check our podcast interview with Keith O'Brien about his book Fly Girls -- another nonfiction book heralding the accomplishments of strong women. Hello, and WELCOME to the Bare Bones Yoga Podcast: Conversations for Yoga Teachers! This is EPISODE 11 and today we’re going to be talking about overcoming challenges. This is certainly a topic we ALL can relate to and my guest has a unique perspective on it. She works with people with physical disabilities, coaching them in one of the toughest sports out there: crew.   Let me start out by saying this: This guest, whom I’ll introduce to you in a moment, is part of my special wellness event coming up in January called The Bare Bones Yoga Urban Wellness Weekend. This event is a two day opportunity for you to practice yoga, meditation, learn myofascial release, hear from expert speakers on different aspects of wellness, eat healthy food, hear inspiring stories from the speaker panel and more. It’s really a life changing line up that’s meant to shift your ways of thinking in positive ways and give you real information, not fluff stuff, about how to improve your health! This event is Jan 12/13 in Cambridge MA. To check out the event, all you need to do is go to the link above. And guess what? Early bird rates apply until 12/15 AND for being a podcast listener, you get a $25 discount off registration! To get it, just email me BEFORE YOU SIGN UP, say you want the podcast listener discount and I’ll send you a special link to pay. So, let’s get to the next step, introducing Jenny Sichel! Jennifer Sichel is an American coxswain. She competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, won 3 silver medals from the World Rowing Championships and a silver medal from the 2016 Paralympic Games. She is a Royal Canadian Henley Regatta champion, a five-time Head of the Charles Regatta champion, and three-time U.S. national champion. She is the coordinator for the Youth Para Rowing (Adaptive Rowing) Department at Community Rowing in Boston.  So, think about this. Think about something you really want to do but you’ve got an obstacle in the way. It could be a mental block, a fear; it could be a physical challenge.. maybe you don’t think you’re strong enough or have the endurance. A story that you might hear now and again is that of someone who wants to run a marathon and they’ve never run one before. They might have both mental fears and physical obstacles that get in their way. How do you handle challenges? That’s in large part what we’ll touch on today. Let’s get to it!
