Entrepreneurship may seem like an elusive endeavor in which you have to quit your 9-to-5, jump in head first, throw caution to the wind, sell your soul to investors and live on ramen… But real entrepreneurship is messier, more complex, diverse (and also attainable) than what the movies, tv shows, and allure of Silicon Valley can make it seem. And while there's no one type of entrepreneur, there is something they all seem to have in common- a burning desire to solve a specific problem. Juliet Starrett is the perfect embodiment of THAT entrepreneurial path. In addition to her role as CEO of the world-renowned digital health and fitness company — The Ready State, she's also an attorney, mother, and former professional whitewater rafter. Juliet co-founded The Ready State with her husband, Kelly in 2008. At the time it was called Mobility|WOD, and it went on to revolutionize the field of performance therapy and self-care. Juliet and Kelly also co-founded San Francisco CrossFit and StandUpKids together. She's a Precision Nutrition Level 2 certified coach and co-author (with Kelly) of the Wall Street Journal bestseller, Deskbound. She also helped mastermind the marketing campaign that drove Kelly's books Becoming A Supple Leopard and Ready to Run onto the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. Dr. Kelly Starrett is the man behind Mobility WOD and the author of Ready to Run: Unlocking Your Potential to Run Naturally, Becoming a Supple Leopard 2nd Edition: The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Pain, Preventing Injury, and Optimizing Athletic Performance and his latest book is called Deskbound: Standing Up to a Sitting World which is mostly what we talked about today. What struck me as interesting was that it didn't matter really how much you excercise, if you sit for a long time each day. I'm big into personal fitness, exercise, sports and outdoor activities. I love to surf, play basketball, tennis, go hiking, do jiu-jitsu and basically anything outdoors and fun. I also love working out in the gym or in the backyard but none of that has any effect on our health if we sit for hours on end each day. That was a blow to my ideas because I thought I could just workout more or harder if I sat for a long time. Turns out that's not the case. At the beginning of the show I referenced an article I wrote which can be found by clicking here. With that said, sitting is dangerous not because sitting is in and of itself bad but it's because you're not active, your body is sedentary for hours at a time and this is not natural. Human beings were not designed this way. We're designed to move. We're designed to experience this 3d physical reality through the movement of our bodies. I hope this show inspires you to look into getting a standing desk. The one I have can be found here and there are many available over on Amazon.com as well. One Last Thing! Human beings are designed to move and use their bodies. It's a guiding principle that drives Kelly and Juliet Starrett. Both lifelong athletes and former world-class competitors in white water sports, the Starrett's are on the cutting edge of revolutionizing methodologies for human movement and athletic performance. From training elite athletes to developing mobility exercises for the general population, Kelly and Juliet hope to inspire and provide programs for people to “live ready”—ready for the next race, the next workout, or simply ready to run around with their grandkids. Kelly and Juliet are co-founders of Crossfit San Francisco and StandUpKids.org. They also developed The Ready State Virtual Mobility Coach, an online program that provides guided mobility videos designed and tailored to an individual's body and lifestyle. Kelly also has authored two New York Times bestselling books Becoming A Supple Leopard and Ready to Run. For over a decade, these fitness advocates have been promoting the notion of lifelong mobility. According to the Starretts, “sitting is the new smoking.” Our modern sedentary lives diminish not only mobility but health in general. They have expanded their messaging to include other critical pillars of good health such as nutrition, sleep, and hydration. Aging is inevitable, but aging poorly isn't. It takes commitment to stay physically active and hold onto what your body can do. Adds Kelly and Juliet, “You do not bounce back like you did when you were 17, you cannot do those things, but maintaining your range of motion and being a skilled mover ultimately doesn't have to change. The goal is to live pain-free and feel pretty good, and then fall off a cliff at age 97.” That's a goal we all can live with.

Summary:Do you really know how to run? If you are a trained, recreational, or novice runner, then the chances of suffering an injury through participation in this most basic of human activities may be higher than you think! A 2015 scientific review identified that for every 1000 hours of running the rates of injury increased from 2.5 injuries in highly-trained distance athletes to 7.7 injuries in recreational runners, and then up to 17.8 injuries in novice runners. Yet despite this strong correlation between injury rate and the ability, skill and capacity to run effectively, it is common to find that little technique guidance and coaching is provided by fitness professionals to teach others how to run. One of my favorite definitions of the word diet is “habitual nourishment”. We can unknowingly develop tunnel vision and think that food is our only source of nourishment. True, food is a huge part, but our diet consists of far more than what we are putting in our bodies. Our movement practices, our exposure to healthy environments (with adequate fresh air and sunlight), the influence from the relationships in our lives, and several other factors play a key role in our habitual nourishment. To attain true, sustainable health as a human being, all of these areas need to be addressed intelligently. And no one knows that better than today’s guest, Dr. Kelly Starrett. Kelly is a doctor of physical therapy, world-class coach, thought leader, and New York Times bestselling author. He’s having a tremendous impact in our world by being an advocate for a culture of movement. The way we move can tell a lot about us as an individual, and the improvement in our movement diet can directly enhance every area of our lives. On today’s episode, we’ll be covering some of the crucial components of a healthy movement diet, plus important insights to help us recover from injuries faster and, more importantly, prevent them in the first place. In this episode you'll discover: Why you generally don’t see wild animals pulling a hammy. How we tend to identify the best athlete in the room. Why movement is skill-based. Why humans are extraordinary at compensation. What posture really means. What the central governor is. Where the word mobility comes from and what it entails. Why practice does NOT make perfect. What it means to have a physical practice. How changes in your environment can sensitize your tissues. Predictive lifestyle factors for increased risk of injury. Why competitive sports can teach you valuable lessons about yourself. What SI joint issues can indicate (and how to address it). Why your brain protects your spine so ruthlessly. What your movement diet is. What mechanotransduction is. The minimum effective dose of therapeutic walking you need to target each day. Movement tips that will enable you to reduce the amount of time you have to “warm up”. The best time to party and eat ice cream (this is an incredible insight!). A checklist of fundamental skills you should be able to perform as a human. How to avoid having tech neck in our technology-based society. ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
Wondering what your high school or college player should do this summer? USTA tournaments? ITA Summer Circuit? ITF Pro Circuit? Something else? Former USC Women's Assistant Coach West Nott has started a new summer tennis tour that takes male and female players who are currently in high school or college to a variety of tournaments along the Pacific Coast in California, Oregon, and Washington. What an incredible opportunity to travel with a former college coach, play some great matches, and learn from some of the best former college players in the game! In this week's podcast, West talks about the West Coast Tennis Tour, who should take advantage of it, and how the ParentingAces Community can get a discount (hint: mention ParentingAces when you call to get information!). According to West, "The idea is to take 30 players from San Diego to Seattle to compete in 13 events in 3 months during the summer. We are targeting high school kids looking to play college tennis, and we are looking for current college players who need events to play to keep improving during the summer months. We are forming a strong group of mentors to make the experience great for the kids, seeing many new things along the way, staying in giant homes, traveling as a team, one big road trip." West also discusses what he was looking for in a college player when he was recruiting for USC and how he will share that information with Tour participants. It's a tough process, and the more information you have, the better. Coupled with last week's podcast with Renee Lopez, you should now have a pretty thorough understanding of what this process is all about. West has also created a great college viewing opportunity for junior players called www.collegetennistours.com. The College Tennis Tours idea is simply taking junior players to the NCAAs to watch the Sweet 16 and on. This is a great way for parents to send their kids to get excited about their future and what playing for a college team is all about. He is selling 2-day, 3-day, and 4-day packages and is offering a special ParentingAces package as well. #SaveCollegeTennis The book West discusses in the podcast is BECOMING A SUPPLE LEOPARD by Kelly Starrett (click here for more information). Get more information on the West Coast Tennis Tour at https://www.westcoasttennistour.com Contact West directly by phone at 858-322-3171 or email him at westnott@gmail.com A big thank you to Morgan Stone and STØNE for our music! The other day I overheard a conversation between two women at the gym. One woman was complaining to the other about her stress incontinence, or, as she described it, leaking urine during her workout. The other woman shared that she has the same problem and they attributed it to having kids and talked about how there was no solution other than surgery. That's not true. In today's episode, I'm talking not only about stress incontinence but about how we ignore problems instead of fixing them. That has got to stop. We power through workouts without regard to what is happening with our bodies. We do nothing about aches, pains, incontinence, headaches and other symptoms instead of looking to identify & resolve the underlying issue. Whether you workout or not, whether you experience stress incontinence or not, I strongly recommend you listen to this episode, and to your body. http://primalpotential.com/345-stress-incontinence-solutions/ Resources: Summer Fat Loss Fast Track Wait List How To Leave A Rating & Review (thank you!!!)
