Hey Doc—Let's talk about what it really costs to perform strength.Dr. Tolulope Olabintan is a family medicine physician, a private practice owner, and a woman of deep faith. She's also someone who—like so many of us—was raised to be “the strong one.” The Proverbs 31 woman. The helper. The one who keeps going, no matter what.Because “strong women” don't sit still. They endure. Power through. Serve. But what happens when that identity clashes with your actual humanity? In this conversation, Dr. Tolu shares her story of postpartum hypertension, pregnancy complications, hospital escapes (yes, literal), and learning to stop performing the role of the unshakable woman. We talk about:How she envisioned herself as a virtuous woman in motherhood — and how that image evolvedThe cost of silence when systems take advantage of your sacrificeHow postpartum hypertension, fatigue, and guilt finally led her to rewire everythingWhat it means to teach others how to love and support youDr. Tolu's story is full of grace, growth, and hard-won clarity. And you're going to feel every bit of it.Dr. Tolulope Olabintan, MD, FAAFP, DipABLM is a Board-Certified Family Physician, Board certified with American Board of Lifestyle Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She also completed a Women's Health Fellowship and is a certified HIV specialist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. She is fondly called by her patients as "Dr. O."Dr. O is also the owner and CEO of Livingspring Family Medical Center, a primary care center located in Mansfield, Texas. She has over 13 years of medical experience. She helps patients live long and well as she believes the quantity of life is just as important as the quality of life. She places emphasis on lifestyle changes that help patients thrive throughout life. Furthermore, Dr. O is a life-enthusiast, a Christian, wife, and mom who enjoys good cuisine and can't get enough of the colors teal and orange. For more information about Dr. O, you can visit her website and connect with her on Facebook, follow on Instagram, connect on Linkedin and subscribe to her What did you think of the episode, doc? She then pursued a Women's Health Fellowship at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. Dr. Corbelli has a special interest in health care for the underserved and is the Co-Medical Director of the Program for Health Care to Underserved Populations (PHCUP) through which she directs a volunteer team of clinicians and health professionals at the Birmingham Free Clinic. She has presented nationally and published on various topics within medical education research such as curriculum development and evaluation, while actively mentoring residents and fellows. She is the recipient of Pennsylvania Medical Society's Top Physicians under 40, Outstanding Teaching Attending Award and Innovation in Medical Education Award from University of Pittsburgh. If you are ready for the job on day one, you are overqualified. That is the advice Dr. Jennifer Corbelli shares with all of her residents and students. Today, we'll learn why mentorship can be a powerful tool for pushing us towards the opportunities we need (although we might not realize it yet). If we wait until we're fully ready to take on a new challenge, we'll end up stuck in one place. Dr. Corbelli teaches us that training is a gift, but it's time-bound. We must use our time wisely with our mentors, our training opportunities, and our experience and aim to take as much as we can from it. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. You are not better than anyone else, but no one is better than you. Learn how to discern between confidence and superiority. 2. Training is a gift. We have access to a network of mentors that can give us honest feedback and seek out the best opportunities for us. But the clock is ticking: Use your time in training wisely. 3. When opportunities present themselves, say yes. If you're ready for a job on day one, you're overqualified.

Join us as we delve into the paradigm-shifting ethos of trauma-informed care with renowned expert Dr. Megan Gerber. Dr. Gerber is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and serves as Medical Director of Women’s Health for VA Boston where she directs the Women’s Health Fellowship. Dr. Gerber edited the textbook, “Trauma-informed Health Care Approaches: A Guide for Primary Care.”  We discuss the framework for trauma-informed universal precautions, as well as basics about the prevalence of trauma, strategies for integrating a trauma-sensitive approach into primary care, practical changes for the office environment,  modifications for physical exam methods, and more.   We recognize this topic may bring up upsetting thoughts or memories for some of our listeners. We will provide some self-care and trauma-informed resources in our show notes. The practice of medicine, especially during times of national crisis, can increase our exposure to traumatic events and reactivate difficult memories, predisoposing folks to depression and suicide risk. We just want to reiterate that you are not alone.
