How can we live long and live well, too? Experts on aging will discuss the individual and societal challenges as well as gifts of longevity from legal, health, and practical perspectives, as well as share advice on preparing for a safe and healthy old age. M.T. Connolly, author of The Measure of Our Age: Navigating Care, Safety, Money, and Meaning Later in Life, is a leading elder justice expert who won a MacArthur Fellowship for her work. Her book’s compelling stories reveal longevity’s abundant challenges and gifts, showing how unprepared we are for both—as individuals, families, and a society. Connolly founded the Justice Department’s Elder Justice Initiative, was architect of the federal Elder Justice Act, and is part of the USC Center for Elder Justice. Valter Longo is the Edna Jones Professor in Gerontology at USC, director of the USC Longevity Institute, and group leader at the IFOM cancer research institute in Milan, Italy. He is the author of The Longevity Diet. The culmination of 25 years of global research on aging, nutrition, and disease, this unique combination of an easy-to-follow “everyday†diet and short periods of fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) provides a key to living to a healthy old age. Laura Mosqueda is a professor of Family Medicine and Geriatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and a widely respected authority on the care of older adults and people who are underserved. Since joining Keck, her roles have included Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, Associate Dean of Primary Care, and Dean. She is the principal investigator of two studies funded by the National Institute on Aging to understand the causes, consequences, and prevention of abuse of people with dementia. As a clinician, researcher, administrator, and educator, she has a unique perspective that is informed by her extensive experiences in the community. Paolina Milana is the author of several books, two of which are award-winning memoirs. Paolina is first-generation Sicilian-American and was primary caregiver to her mother and sister, both diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Paolina began her career as a features writer for a daily newspaper, then crossed over into public relations and marketing, succeeding as a communications executive. Paolina is the Founder of Madness to Magic Life & Book Coaching. She most recently spearheaded The Caregiver Chronicles, a collaborative book project with 22 family caregivers, each of whom authored a chapter. She is the USC Family Caregivers Support Center community engagement specialist. Moderator: Sean P. Curran is a professor and James Birren Chair of Gerontology who serves as the Vice Dean of USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and leads a research program focused under understanding the connection between genes and diet in maintaining health across the lifespan. He established the Los Angeles Aging Research Alliance (LAARA) and co-founded the Geroscience Los Angeles Meeting (GLAM). He is the director of the Geroscience PhD program and is the co-director of the GEMSTEM program that provides research training and professionalization to undergraduate researchers interested in studying aging.
What up! This week, we discuss the theory behind humans living long and if there are other beings amongst us. Also human vs AI in the creative field. We touch on the shared human experience and how we're all connected. Always the questions.
The title is more of a curiosity than an answer... But then, if you're a RWTP listener you'll know that that's my philosophy around most things. My pop (grandfather) just turned 100 years old, making the elite less than 1% of humans to become a centenarian (and of the 1%, less than 15% of which are male). It got me reflecting on his life, his lifestyle and his demeanor and pondering what really is the secret to a long, healthy and happy life. Because whatever it is, he's nailing it! Episode 80: Tom Hine, CFP®, CFS®, MBA & His Book, The Balanced Wealth Approach: Secrets To Living Long And Living Rich In this episode, Tom, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, author, and founder and CEO of Capital Wealth Management, shares with me how there should be comparable focus on both wealth and health when it comes to our futures -- even in his field of wealth management. Through his own journey in finance (the numbers) and karate, meditation, yoga (the physical and the mind), he demonstrates that he's living what he's preaching. The message he shares with his clients, into which he does a deep dive with me here, is a great reminder that we can't take anything for granted. The world is changing, and so how we respond to and live within it also needs to change and become both more intentional and mindful. "You need a 5G mindset to live within a 5G world." What I appreciated most in Tom's message in his book and in the thoughts he shares here is the reminder to be healthier so that we can enjoy what we've accomplished. That wisdom was sparked in Tom when he chose to focus more on his health, through karate as a younger professional, instead of merely climbing the corporate ladder. Financial and career success would not be sufficient to uphold and maintain his mindset. "Drastic times call for drastic measures." This well-known quote comes to mind as Tom talks about how we have to offset all the negative in the world and work on ourselves to achieve the best performance and strongest longevity to move forward and enjoy ourselves and our communities. We need to look for, take into account, and harness what it is we can control to make progress for ourselves. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS You want to be the CEO of your own health When the mind is quiet, the world will show itself to you Don't be afraid to go back to the past and figure out what makes you whole “A healthy person has a thousand wishes, a sick person only one” (Don't take that for granted.) Diamandis, Robert Hariri The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Tom is, How are you focusing on health in order to move forward with longevity, ensuring you're not taking what you have for granted? ABOUT TOM Tom Hine is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and the author of The Balanced Wealth Approach: Secrets to Living Long and Living Rich. He believes that true success is not just about building wealth but also about maintaining good health so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labor. Drawing from his background as a financial planner and a fourth-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate, Tom aims to incorporate health and wellness into his financial strategies. A Fighting Spirit--a factor associated with length of life * The Bible is full of people who made mistakes but they had a fighting spirit and refused to give up and quit in the face of great adversity. * The key to winning is to keep getting up. * We are to resist the Enemy until he leaves. God will always cause us to triumph in Christ (II Corinthians 2:14). * A strong spirit is what sustains you physically. * Testimonies from Holocaust survivors and medical research.
I'm joined on the podcast today by Stephanie Czajkowski (pronounced check-house-key) currently Vulcan Lt. T'Veen in STAR TREK: PICARD she is also best known for her roles as the bald badass alter-ego Hammerhead on HBO Max's Doom Patrol, and stone-cold killer Bex Dawson on the reboot of McGruber on NBC Peacock, her guest starring role as Chyna on the NBC comedy, Young Rock, starring Dwayne Johnson and the Postmaster in 20th Century Studios feature film, The Call of the Wild. Czajkowski has proven an inspiration and advocate for breast cancer awareness, having personally battled with not one but three types of unrelated cancer. A cancer “long hauler,” she has endured through a thyroid removal, six chemo sessions, a double mastectomy and 25 sessions of radiation for she what she calls her “cancer trifecta”. To deal with her roller-coaster reality, Czajkowski and her husband chronicled her health journey on their humorous yet honest podcast, ChemoSkinny, which they are turning into a movie. We talk about her actor's hat trick of having major roles with DC, WWE, and Star Trek back to back. And then we get philosophical.

People who live to be 100 (and beyond!) have four factors in common that…Seems to have nothing to do with their:· Genetic makeup· Family history· Lifestyle choices· Diet· Environment· Socioeconomic statusIn fact, according to clinical neuropsychologist Dr. Mario Martinez, your genes have only a 20 percent impact on your health and longevity. The rest is attributed to what you hold in your consciousness — how you view yourself and the experience of aging.1. Relationship to Time2. Self-Love3. Healthy Ageing4. MeaningDr Mario Martinez is a clinical neuropsychologist and proponent of cultural psychoneuroimmunology and is an expert in healthy longevity. Dr. Mario E. Martinez primarily focusing on how biological age can be reversed without medication, looking at epigenetic markers such as environment and cultural beliefs affecting gene expression of health or illness. He specializes in how cultural and transcendental beliefs affect health and longevity. A world expert in this field of anti-aging, he teaches centenarian consciousness. He developed a theory of biocognition to suggest how cognition and biology coemerge with their cultural history in a bioinformational field that seeks maximum contextual relevance. Academic science continues to divide mind and body as well as ignore the influence cultural contexts have on the process of health, illness and aging. For example, cultures that support growing older as a positive development associated with increased wisdom and abilities have higher numbers of centenarians living healthier lives than cultures that view aging as a process of inevitable deterioration. This concept of developmental biocognition, assumes that our cognition and our biology are dynamically interwoven with our cultural history and cannot be reduced to their components.Learn more at:https://www.biocognitiveculture.com/Support the show
In this episode of Career Can Do, Mary Ann Faremouth chats with Christopher Saye. Chris is Managing Director of MarcWhittaker, a CPA firm dedicated to providing highly personalized, strategic guidance and support to entrepreneurs in their business, personal and family lives. Chris shares insights for living your best life he has gleaned from his recent journey. Chris spent the last year visiting the blue zones - geographic regions that are home to some of the world's oldest people. He picked up three life lessons common in each area that contributed to the longevity of its inhabitants: God, beans, and finding your ‘why'. Religion, spirituality, and community were part of their cultural identity - it seemed less about specific beliefs and more about the religious institutions providing a regular place for gathering and building relationships. In addition, each culture had plant-based diets, of which beans were an integral part. Finally, they lived life very purposefully. In Costa Rica, there's a phrase called plan de vida, which translates to ‘plan of the day.' Everyone wakes up in the morning with an idea of their purpose for the day.
