Lance Mortlock is a Senior EY Strategy Partner. He is author of the book Disaster Proof: Scenario Planning for Post Pandemic Future, which explores ways scenario planning can help organizations be more resilient. This is a must-read book for anyone in the Risk Management field. It provides practical advice for strategists, planners, executives and board members on how to ask better questions related to the future, uncertainty, risk and strategy. In this OODAcast, we ask Lance for insights into what planners can learn from major global events from the last few decades and how scenario planning can help organizations prepare for the big shocks. Scenario Planning goes beyond simple strategy development and strategic planning. Strategic plans are almost never agile enough for the real world. Scenario planning helps organizations prepare for increasing levels of global uncertainty and complexity. When done well it results in playbooks that can help speed decision-making in the moment. Scenario Planning originated with the military and has been firmly rooted in military strategy and is continually leveraged at major military staff headquarters to map out potential futures. Students of military history may know of famous scenario planners like Herman Kahn of RAND. Kahn had met with a forward thinking executive at Shell, Pierre Wack, who became the first business leader to adapt scenario planning commercially. Lance discusses how many corporations since then have leveraged scenario planning to anticipate futures and prepare for both increased risk and opportunities. Lessons we learned from Lance include: Expected outcomes from scenario planning Repeatable methods to get the most from planning sessions How Lance's methods of scenario planning for corporations can be translated to scenario planning for individuals (which makes for some excellent career advice) Potential scenarios involving the impact of Covid-19 on the global business environment What could be the next big disruptive event The uncertainty and complexity and potential risks and opportunities associated with Artificial Intelligence Related Reading: Disaster Proof: Scenario Planning for a Post-Pandemic Future Lance Mortlock on LinkedIn Black Swans and Gray Rhinos Now more than ever, organizations need to apply rigorous thought to business risks and opportunities. NFL.com's Lance Zierlein joins Matt Waldman's RSP Cast for a conversation about the process of scouting, lessons we've learned over the years, the players who taught us those lessons, and 2019 prospects who've caught our eye. One of my favorite RSP Film Room episodes was the clinic that Lance Zierlein gave about offensive line play when we studied Washington's Brandon Scherff in 2014. Soon after, Lance accepted a job from the NFL to do scouting reports for the NFL.com website and appear on the NFL Network during draft season. Lance joined me for a post-Labor Day conversation about a variety scouting and player-related topics. Things Lance has learned about scouting over the years: The difference between scouting from a fan perspective and a team perspective. Why teams value physical traits highly, have standards for them, and give them a longer lifeline. Why it's ok to like a player you've assigned a lower grade than a player with a higher grade. The value of good football character. Players that helped Matt and Lance learn valuable lessons. Colts GM Chris Ballard's mentoring of Lance. Why you must do more than summarize how a player performed in college in a scouting report. Don't get into the weeds with football technique if you're overlooking that the player can get the job done at a high level. The value of studying NFL tape year-round as a preparation for studying college players. How Lance and I feel about the process of ranking players. Difficult evaluations for Lance and me and what we thought about each player. Matt: Raiders RB Chris Warren. Lance: Houston QB Deshaun Watson. Players from the 2019 NFL Draft class that have caught our eye this early. WR Tyre Brady WR Emmanuel Butler WR Olabisi Johnson RB Zach Moss Lance on his NFL.com gig as well as other lessons from Ballard. Areas of our scouting or the NFL's that we think can improve. 42% - No Market Need! This is the top reason startups fail, for according to a comprehensive research of entrepreneurs with failed companies. Hi Reachers, The REACH OR MISS podcast is all about being a customer focused entrepreneur. One and a half years ago, I decided to create this podcast after I realized that most entrepreneurs failed because they didn’t understand what I call the magic of marketing. Marketing is magic; it’s all about being able to look at the market from the eye view of the potential customers. Entrepreneurs fail for two reasons; both of which are part of not finding the biggest opportunity in the market: They didn’t find their most potential customers, those who will be the initial and secondary audience to adopt the new product. They didn’t manage to clearly define their new, unfamiliar product. Let’s face it; this is a huge challenge. Among the 120 startups and entrepreneurs we worked with over the last ten years, only in one company did the two founders define their product in the same way, with the same words. Most entrepreneurs tell a different story than their colleagues and even from day to day. My guests in the REACH OR MISS podcast are successful entrepreneurs and opinion leaders. I ask them about how they managed to find who their most potential customers are, and how it led them to reach their successes. The issue of choosing the customers that are most likely to adopt, use, and pay for your product is one of the most important aspects of business success. In today’s show I’ve chosen to focus on some of the most important issue my guests talked about while answering the question about “Who are your customers, and how did you figured out that these are the best customers for you? My first guest is Lance Scoular. For me, Lance is one of the best examples to how entrepreneurs succeed by focusing on their most potential customers. And how, listening to them led Lance to a very successful pivot. Lance Scoular, AKA The Savvy Navigator, has been involved in International Trade and Transport for 50 years. In 2008, Lance started receiving invitations from students in his classes to connect with them on both Facebook and LinkedIn. Over the last nine years, he has developed and expanded his social media networks exponentially (especially LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, Snapchat, and beBee) and those of a select group of clients in a variety of sectors, both locally and globally. The results have been significant. Lance is currently in the process of doing a 180-degree business pivot, refocusing away from Social Media Consulting, back to what he does best, International Trade and Transport Training. He will soon launch an online course, “Import Export Made Easy” in video and audio, as well as the “Import Export Made Easy” Podcast. How Lance found his customers Back in 2009, I got very involved in social media. I was running an Import Export course, and I was getting invitations from my students to connect with them on Facebook and LinkedIn. In the beginning, I didn’t understand what they wanted from me, but once I Googled it, I got very interested in the business potential of these social networks. As we mentioned before, Australia was very isolated from the rest of the world, the Internet and social media, in particular, have changed that. In 2009, I decided to start helping people to use social media with no connection to import or export. (I still taught the import and export courses, but the number of courses dropped during those years.) And today, I’m pivoting since I just recently realized that I could help many businesses all over the world with my knowledge and expertise in Import and Export, so I’m about to launch my first online Import-Export course. The exciting thing is that I’m going to use my wide network of social media connections that I built over the last nine...

Lance Morgan on the decline of federal Indian law: “What we’re not teaching in law school is the other half of the system, where tribes are aggressively using their newly educated lawyers, their economic power, and their desire to do good to really change the equation.” “Once you make the mental leap that the entire system is ridiculous...you don’t ever go back.” Lance Morgan (Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska) is President & CEO of Ho-Chunk Inc. He is also the managing partner of the law firm Frederick Peebles and Morgan. And if you know Lance, or have read his previous work, you know that he is always good for a big idea, or an idea that pushes boundaries, in Indian Country. Lance returned to the show to discuss one of those ideas: the Rise of Tribal Law and the Decline of Federal Indian Law and he recently published an article by the same name in the Arizona State University Law Journal. Many NextGen Natives are practicers of, or generally interested in, federal Indian law. Lance’s article is great because it forces readers to ask themselves the question how can tribal law be on the rise and federal Indian law be on the decline? The basic point is that tribal law is an exercise of tribal sovereignty whereas federal Indian law is the enforcement of restrictions imposed upon tribes over the last few centuries. And the decline of federal Indian law may not be a bad thing necessarily, if tribes exercise and use tribal law. You should go read it (after you listen to our discussion, of course). The article is great for a few reasons. First, it forces us to re-think the way we approach law and policy in our communities. Even people who are thinking about how to proactively make a difference often use federal Indian law as an anchoring point. And it’s a losing one for us. Lance captured it succinctly when he wrote “We need to stop playing their game because we cannot win it. If we have any hope of progress, we need to play a new game.” Second, although it is published in a law journal, it is deliberately written so that non-lawyers (such as myself) can read and understand it. People should share this with tribal council members, business people, and community members to think about what Lance is suggesting and how to approach it. We could have focused the entire conversation on the article, but that would not have been nearly as much fun. And I think the conversation about the other topics packs as much, if not more, food-for-thought for listeners. Here’s the tip of the iceberg of a few of the topics we discussed: How Lance approaches his work as CEO of Ho-Chunk Inc. How Winnebago has built a thriving community using land that was entirely fee, and not trust, property. If we don’t plan decades ahead, the current housing shortages in Indian Country will be significantly worse. Education trends in Indian Country. Building non-governmental institutions in tribal communities that can make a real impact. The difference between principles, culture, and traditions and how confusing the concepts can be used as a weapon in a bad way. Rebuilding cultural myths-as in collective stories that we use to guide the community. We packed a lot of ideas into the 60-70 minutes we spoke. Each topic could be its own show. I hope it sparks some conversation, and thought. Tell me what you think on the Facebook page! Tell me what kind of action it inspires you to take!
This is a special bonus podcast episode with the guy you get to meet and hang out with if you come to Two years ago, I reported on my experience at the brutal SEALFit Kokoro camp, a 60+ hour crucible you can read more about at "" In that article, I mention a guy named "Lance Cummings". Coach Lance's snarling face struck fear deep into the heart of every Kokoro participant in my class, and he is well known for being the man who dishes out extreme amounts of suffering and hardship for anybody brave enough to step into Kokoro. But there's much more to coach Lance Cummings than simply being a man who could kill you with his pinky finger. Technically, Lance is director of training at . Before that, retired from Active Duty Navy Service with 30 years of combined Active and Reserve service. After graduating BUD/s Class 124 he deployed overseas in support of US Foreign Policy with six different SEAL teams on both the east and west coast. He served at the Naval Special Warfare Center as a Basic Underwater/SEAL (BUD/s) instructor where he earned his Master Training Specialist classification. He also worked several State Department Security Team contracts with private employers during his time in the Naval Reserves. He left Active Duty in 1995 to pursue a Doctorate of Chiropractic degree, graduating in 2000 from Life Chiropractic College in Atlanta. While running a Chiropractic practice in Ga. and continuing to serve in the SEAL Reserves, he was recalled to Active Duty in January 2002 to deploy to the Middle East in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He made 7 subsequent Middle East deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq with three different SEAL Teams as well as contracting with Blackwater Security. As the Training Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group 1, in charge of West Coast SEAL Team operational training and readiness, he helped establish the Human Performance Initiative, a tactical readiness assessment and evaluation testing system utilized by every SEAL team today.
