Suzanne’s daughter, Katy, returns to the podcast today to join her mom and Michelle in their passionate discussion about Harry and Meghan’s recent interview with Oprah. Armed with a history of interest in all things regarding the Royal Family, our three hosts have a lot to say about this explosive media event, and they are definitely not shy about offering their varied opinions here today. They begin by sharing their own individual histories with Royal Family interest, their thoughts on Meghan, and their first impressions as the interview started. In attempting to determine the intention behind the interview, they cover such topics as Meghan’s expectations of life as a Royal, the Queen’s response to the interview, the fact that no questions were off limits, and precisely where their empathy lies in the aftermath. They also delve into the way Harry and Meghan chose to respond to questions, the potential impact of the interview, and how Meghan will be perceived throughout history. As you will hear, this is a conversation that easily could have lasted many hours given the extensive knowledge our hosts have about the Royal Family and their strongly held opinions on this momentous interview. Episode Highlights: · Suzanne, Michelle and Katy’s history of interest in the Royal Family · Their thoughts on Meghan · Their first impressions as the interview started · The purpose of the interview · Meghan’s expectations regarding joining the Royal Family · The Queen’s response · Opening themselves up to ‘no questions off limits’ · Where our hosts’ empathy lies · The way they chose to answer Oprah’s questions · The potential impact of the interview · How Meghan will be perceived years from now Quotes: “I felt like my jaw was on the floor the entire time.” “Things just kept falling.” “It was one of those worldwide scandalous photos that was plastered all over magazines and newspapers.” “I’m a little bit obsessed, too.” “I actually like her more now than I did before the interview.” “When I listen to her in an interview, I see an actress.” “She puts on that exterior protection.” “It was jarring.” “Why are they doing this interview to begin with?” “She was defending her name.” “To bash the Royal Family…I think is a little over the top.” “It’s not the Hallmark version of life.” “You’re so full of it!” “These are private family issues.” “This interview is so polarizing…there’s so much that we don’t know.” “We’re living in a time of reckoning for so many people.” “I don’t think they called people out like you feel like they did.” “I think they’re going to get a lot more attention instead of a lot less attention, at least in the short term.” “You’ve just drawn the rest of the world into it.” Links: Homepage: Orange Juice Optional Goodnight Sweet Bear: Goodnight Sweet Bear Why Hello! We discussed some trending topics this week that 'changed the approach' on what we may have thought. Pop star Lizzo has been looking for a boyfriend - for years. News has learned that the pretty thick singer has finally found one. News has confirmed that Lizzo is currently dating Flint, Michigan rapper BFB DaPackman. He's an up and coming comedian and rapper. It's still early, but these two make the perfect couple. First off - they both have extremely outgoing personalities. And they both have that extra body that makes you warm and feel safe. Well see how this goes? Megan Thee Stallion is giving out grants and scholarships worth $1 million to women. The “Savage” sensation has teamed up with officials at Fashion Nova, with whom she has her own clothing line and encouraged interested applicants to sign up for the Women on Top initiative. Megan revealed the very first recipient of the fund will be the Houston, Texas branch of female empowerment nonprofit YWCA, formerly known as the Young Women’s Christian Association. It’s not the first time Megan has used her platform to provide financial aid to worthy causes. Last year, she teamed up with bosses at Rap Rotation, Amazon Music's flagship hip-hop brand, to launch the Don't Stop Scholarship Fund to help put two female students of color through college. Swizz Beatz and Timbaland have sold their massive brand Verzuz to Triller for an interest in the brand. The Triller network has acquired the powerhouse, virtual movement that was created in a pandemic. Swizz Beatz and Timbaland will now oversee music and company strategy. On top of it all, many of the 42 artists involved with Verzuz are now shareholders in Triller too. That's what it's about! Cardi B becomes 1st female rapper to earn a diamond single with 'Bodak Yellow.' The song went 9x-platinum in 2019 and reached the elusive diamond status less than two years later. The single powered Cardi into her Invasion of Privacy debut, where every song on the album is at least gold — making her the first woman to accomplish that feat as well. Cardi's crazy self continues to make moves! On Sunday, March 7, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a tell-all interview, which comes a little over a year after they decided to step back from some of their duties as a part of the Royal Family. British tabloids have been tearing Meghan down for years, ever since it was first revealed she was dating Prince Harry in 2016. Now that Harry and Meghan have moved on from their Royal duties and relocated to Southern California, they’re giving some insight into the hell they endured inside the palace walls about a Royal Family member expressing “concerns” about how dark Archie’s skin might be; How Meghan suffered from suicidal thoughts; How the family cut Harry off, financially, after they stepped down; and that their next child will be a girl. We are living in a time where “vulnerability” and “authenticity” are buzz words, thrown around like confetti. We say we admire vulnerability in our leaders and we want the influencers we follow on the internet to be “authentic”. And I have heard more than once that the best way to communicate is to be your authentic self. But I am here to argue that it is still unsafe for many people to truly be their vulnerable, authentic selves—especially on the internet where they can quite literally be threatened by anonymous users or at work where their employment is on the line. There is still so much unspoken territory when it comes to the rules about how much of your personal life and experience is ok to share—and when and where it is safe to be vulnerable. My guest today is a practicing therapist among many other things. I came to know of her work on Instagram. Finding a therapist on Instagram is a very millennial thing to do, I know, but what struck me about Meghan and her message is that she didn’t sound like other therapists. She was pulling from her personal experience as well as her professional background to educate about skills we can learn and implement in our daily lives. The things Meghan’s sharing is pulled from her work with clients and the tools she uses personally in navigating her own mental health challenges. This is new territory for a medical professional to share about their own personal stuff and I was super excited to get to talk to her about it. Sometimes traumas occur that aren’t discussed or supported in the ways they should be. It takes some brave soul to forge the path in changing the narrative for those who follow. Today’s show is an important conversation of a personal story of egg donation, what can go wrong, and the emotional trauma that might follow. Meghan Coltrane is a Licensed Professional Counselor in perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. Her private practice is in Asheville, NC. She’s here to share her personal experience of being an egg donor, which led her into the field of perinatal emotional health. I’m putting a sensitivity notice on this episode for anyone who has experienced obstetrical complications or trauma related to a procedure. This kind of complication is very rare, but it CAN happen, so we want to bring awareness to it and learn, understand, and support people through all aspects of their reproductive and mental health. Show Highlights: Meghan’s rare complications are an uncommon experience in egg donation When she was 25, she applied to be an egg donor and went through the required testing Within days of being approved, two different couples had chosen her as their egg donor and she prepared for her next cycle with the necessary medications and many ultrasounds Who needs an egg donor? Any couple seeking to do IVF without their own viable eggs 20 eggs were retrieved during the procedure and her mother drove her home to rest, with her plan being to return to work the next day She tried to sleep, then woke up, and fainted on her way to the bathroom The on-call nurse told her to drink more water She went back to sleep, but kept waking up with increasing abdominal pain; it became sharp, like nothing she’d ever felt before The on-call nurse prescribed Tylenol with codeine Later, her roommate took her to the ER, where she was given IV fluids and was admitted for 3 days The diagnosis was ovarian torsion, in which the ovaries were twisting on themselves and severe bleeding was occurring Throughout her hospital stay, her caregivers were always on guard for the need for emergency surgery, which would have meant the removal of her ovaries After her discharge, she visited 6 different doctors and began having anxiety, terrors, and emotional issues Her physical recovery took 1-2 weeks, but the emotional healing took much longer Meghan was anxious, terrified, scared, and filled with irrational fears and repeated nightmares Her body responded as though she had been through a sexual assault, with her even being terrified of every man she came into contact with Why she hunkered down and shut everyone out of her life She had no energy, was exhausted, and lost a lot of weight She saw her therapist and went to Yoga for Trauma classes She saw a psychiatrist for medication to help her eat and sleep During the first year, she threw herself into self-healing and did TRE (trauma releasing exercises) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with her primary therapist The fertility clinic kept calling, asking her to donate again, even though she had told them she was done Why she felt treated “like a machine that gave them their product” There was no discussion about the hormonal effects or the possible mental effects of the process or the risks Meghan’s desire is not to discourage egg donation, but to encourage trauma-informed care How Meghan has started doing trauma-informed care training How she wouldn’t do it again, but gained a lot of insight in how to care for herself and set boundaries The financial benefits of egg donation, taxes, and why it’s not worth it Her official diagnosis: anxiety, depression, and PTSD What Meghan wants others to know about this process and the impact on perinatal mental health Meghan’s advice: “Be open to healing and surround yourself with those who respect your boundaries.” Resources: www.meghancoltrane.com www.weareeggdonors.com

What does preconception planning look like, and when is the best time to start? Toronto-based author, speaker, nutritionist, and founder of the Academy of Culinary Nutrition Meghan Telpner shares her own experience with preconception planning, miscarriage and pregnancy, and post-pregnancy. Hopefully, you, too, will be empowered to become your own best health expert and be inspired to find your own unique path to optimal health. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The UnDiet revolution How Meghan’s own diet transitioned from diet to undiet Meghan’s experience with miscarriage What preconception planning looks like The essentials you need to have during pregnancy How to manage your diet post-pregnancy Diet for babies Key Takeaways: The best time to start to start preconception planning is right now. There are people who have healthy vegan pregnancies, but if your body is not getting the fats that you need and your body is asking for more protein and fat, it can be really challenging. It’s important not to deny what your body is naturally trying to communicate that it needs and to follow what you feel is best for you and your baby. Through anecdotal evidence, it seems that a miscarriage is incredibly common before sustaining a healthy pregnancy. The pill is completely toxic and will mess with your hormones potentially for the rest of your life unless you take active measures to clean up the damage that it does nutrient-wise and hormonally-wise. The most effective way that women detoxify is through the placenta, into their unborn child, so the least amount of chemicals that end up in your body, the less work you have to do immediately before becoming pregnant. The microbiome of your gut becomes the first microbiome of your child. If you’re bringing a human into the world, the least you can do is get the toxins out of your life. Action Steps: Modify your diet according to what works best for you. Detoxify and start living a clean lifestyle. Get rid of the products that contain toxic and unsafe ingredients. Always have good protein sources and healthy snacks in your pantry. Meghan said: “I think that if we can bring humor and fun and joy into the process of living our lives, that’s beyond half the batter towards feeling good inside and out.” “The time to start preconception planning is today. It doesn’t matter how old you are. If you’re 15 or you’re 25 or you’re 35, if you want to have children in your lifetime, you have to start now.” Thanks for listening! We will be talking with Meghan Enriquez today from True Conversations. We’re going to hear how she started a podcast to grow her movement, how she grew the podcast into a network, and how she fosters engagement with her target audience. She also is hosting an event at the end of September 2017, so listen for that later. How Meghan got into podcasting Meghan was not looking to become a podcasters. She started her company, True Conversations, back in January 2016 after shifting career goals and being home with 2 young children. She felt there was a need to change the culture in how we communicate and lead. True Conversations started out being events and training, but one day at a lunch, the broadcaster for the Baltimore minor league team suggested podcasting as a useful platform for her to explore. Although Meghan at the time didn’t know what a podcast was, she soon saw the value of it as a medium for spreading the mission of True Conversations—to promote understanding around stigmatized issues—into the world. Although she didn’t know how to do it, she knew she could learn, and so that’s what she did. It has been the biggest blessing and best decision she made around True Conversations. From one podcast to a whole network In order to cover the breadth of issues and all the life and human experiences that deserve to be talked about, Meghan realized she’d need to open up the podcast network. That way, a variety of people can have it as a platform and a safe space to respectfully bring to the table stories, networks and topics that Meghan personally didn’t have experience with. People were invited to have their own show as long as they were willing to maintain the same sort of vibe of having true conversations that are real, transparent, uplifting and empowering, being respectful of all sides of an issue and promoting the culture of spreading understanding. So much of what overwhelms our social media dialogue right now is arguing, pettiness and taking sides, and that’s part of the reason all the shows on the network are on the same podcasting channel: it means listeners bump into and naturally come across topics, conversations and perspectives that they might have otherwise have avoided due to the personalization in how news is consumed these days. The diversity aspect is really important and what pushed Meghan to create the network. Before the podcast, there were live events True Conversations began by hosting small coffee shop events with a panel of people from as many sides of an issue as possible and having a true conversation around it. The first event was about redefining the health journey and featured four people living a health journey and going about it very differently, with different beliefs. The goal was to normalize that whatever you choose is good for you. Other topics have included world peace, faith and body image. True Conversations also has a contributor-fed blog, which was a way to allow people from different walks of life to have their space on the platform before the podcast came about. This year, the vision is for the events to culminate into an annual larger event on a central topic, which will happen with the first annual True Conversations Live Event on September 30th in Baltimore. The topic this year is entrepreneurship, and the event will feature a screening of the She Started It documentary as well as the true conversations panel discussion with local female entrepreneurs. Being that September 30th is International Podcast day, Meghan is inviting local podcasters to come to the event for free, interview people and cover the event. Live interactions and conversations online A few months ago Meghan began to do weekly Facebook lives every Thursday at 7pm Eastern as another way to connect with the community, get to know each other and give them space to share their feelings about some of the current issues that affect our lives privately and professionally. Meghan finds there’s a different exchange that can happen when it is live instead of just having it in comments where the tone of voice can be misconstrued or intentions misunderstood. It’s a meeting point for people of different ethnicities, socio-economic status and career paths asking each other questions, while Meghan just facilitates. For now, it’s on Facebook Live. Meghan said when she first started doing Facebook lives she made all the mistakes, but the lesson for her is that when faced with something new and uncomfortable, see yourself as a student and just do it. One mistake she did make is to randomly just pop on, instead of letting people know ahead of time when she’d be live. That’s why they set up the consistent expectation of the regular Thursday 7 o’clock schedule. She says that picking a consistent schedule is not only healthy for you as a person with a busy life, but it’s more helpful for your audience so they can plug in much more frequently. The Power of the Podcast Meghan’s hope and why she chose podcasting as one of their platforms is because it’s a wonderfully powerful tool to have and promote social change. If you’re in this space, just like with any other media, you can use it for entertainment, and people do need places to escape and zone out for a little while. But Meghan’s advice is to be conscious of how you’re influencing and perpetuating social norms and culture, and use that power responsibly. Even if you’re not talking about deep, heavy topics but are more in the education or entertainment space, use the power for good so that you are spreading a happier, healthier message. If people are listening, you have the opportunity to influence them in a good way. MetaMoment: Today’s podcast MetaMoment is…The School of Podcasting with Dave Jackson. This is always one of my top podcasts to listen to every week. I started listening in late 2012 and haven’t missed an episode since. In episode 582, Dave opens it up to his listeners as they share some “Um, Yeah, No” moments. This is when someone reaches out to you as a podcaster, pitching themselves - but it is clearly not a good fit. In fact, some of them are hilariously off target. You definitely want to check this episode out, and subscribe so you don’t miss future episodes either. This MetaMoment has been brought to your by Libsyn. They are the media host I use and the number 1 place I recommend as I work with new podcasters. I’ve been recommending them for several years now. They are not a sponsor, but I have recently become an affiliate for them, so if you sign up with Libsyn and use the coupon code ‘JOSH’ you can receive a free month of hosting.
