Welcome to the Build that Business podcast, episode number 50. Let me ask you, when you hear the word “PR” - what comes to mind? Is it something you're implementing in your wedding business or do you brush it off and jot it down on the to-do list for “someday when I have more time?” I'll admit, I was the latter for far too long but once I realized the power of PR, it opened so many new doors for my business and that's why I'm excited to introduce you to our guest today. In this episode, I'm sitting down with Meghan Ely of OFD Consulting and we are talking about all things PR - how to get press for your business. How to get visible to the people you want to serve, how to get people talking about you, and how to gain social proof. This episode is packed with tangible things that you can do to get noticed. We talked about - Where to start with PR if this is a new strategy for your business. - How to create editorial relationships. - How much time we should be allocating weekly to press initiatives and why it's important - When it's time to bring in a publicist (this answer might surprise you) - How to create SMART goals around your PR strategy.Meghan combines in-the-trenches event experience with a love of wedding PR to empower her clients to take their business to new heights. This conversation was such a treat because I really think PR is an untapped marketing opportunity for so many creative business owners. It can also be used as a top of funnel strategy to bring in new clients. 2) PR is tied directly into social proof, which plays a big role in how today's couples (especially Gen Z) relies on social proof to say yes to the right wedding pro. 3) PR can seem overwhelming but the fact is, you yourself are the best person to start representing yourself because you know you best. REVISIT: Lynn Easton is a busy woman. Between managing her destination wedding design business Easton Events and growing her Easton Porter Group luxury properties, she’s got a lot of balls in the air. But for her, that’s all just part of the fun. Lynn started her wedding planning career over twenty years ago almost by accident. She offered to help a friend plan and design her wedding, back before planners were really around. One wedding turned into another and another, and soon Lynn realized she had a true thriving business. But she wanted more; her beautiful designs were only being noticed regionally, and she was ready to go national, and even international. Lynn’s story is one of how to make it on the big stage, and her sage advice goes a long way in inspiring and educating others in the industry. In this week’s episode, Andy and Lynn talk all things business, family, and pleasure, and how she truly does it all. She shares her take on what an Easton event really is, what she attributes most to her success, and how she and her husband are taking on now more than ever in the business- and still loving it. Lynn also gives pointers to other up and coming event planners on where to focus efforts most to get the more clientele. This perceptive interview is a perfect reminder of how someone with a strong vision and a great business plan can create one of the world’s most sought-after companies. REVISIT: “You’re only as good as your last party.” This old adage is something that renowned event producer and designer David Stark holds in high regard. David has produced events for noteworthy celebrities like Glenn Close and Brad Pitt, organizations like Saturday Night Live, the Whitney Museum, and the Metropolitan Opera, has 5 books published, and the list goes on in similar fashion. David’s career in design started in college when he pursued studies in painting. After finishing graduate school in New York with an MFA in painting, he realized he, in fact, did not want to become a painter. While waiting tables in New York in his twenties, he and his boyfriend began diving into the floral scene, slowly growing from a small job operation to eventually a larger-than-life business 12 years later. Though David didn’t end up becoming a professional painter, he attributes his success in large part to what he learned in art school; not to paint, but to solve problems creatively, how to put together teams, and invent things. That process is what carries through to today for David, noting that putting together a team is the most creative act you can pull off as well as creating a business structure for your company. Andy and David also chat about his favorite events he has produced, and he explains the mindset he uses when approaching a new event. For David, it’s all about creating relationships with people, pushing boundaries in the designs he creates, and always staying a little nervous because that means you’re trying something completely original. Listen to the full interview to hear what inspires David, how he pulled off creating event decor out of toilet paper, and how he balances the creative and business aspects of his company. PHOTO CREDIT: Aaron Watson Photography We're SO excited to chat this week with Meghan Ely of OFD Consulting. Meghan has a RAD job... she basically works with wedding professionals to help them get published & market themselves! The world of wedding public relations is a tricky one to navigate, so it's great to have an expert in the field on the show to help us with some tips on how to make it easier! Key Takeaways: What are some things we as photographers focus on from a wedding public relations standpoint? Photographers should focus on getting real weddings published both in blogs and in print: select images, write the couple's story, and find your place in media. When you're in a saturated market, you can also try to gain third party credibility. Ideally, you want to be the "expert" and be the go-to person for quotes from credible sources like The Knot or Wedding Wire. If you've been in business a long time, you can look to elevate your brand among your peers. This includes things like speaking engagements, getting awards, and more. How can I get started on the correct wedding public relations path? Set goals for yourself. Ask yourself: "Why am I doing this?" Also, focus on who you're trying to impress. What market are you interested in? Decide which sources of media you are attracted to the most. You want to pick a media source that matches your ideal client. Give your portfolio a good, hard look. Does it represent your best work? Does it compliment your ideal clients? While we know our own work and the story behind it, it's super important to make sure it comes through in our portfolio as well. How can photographers pitch ideas to the media? Look for themes in your body of work. Is there anything that stands out from recent weddings that could work for a piece? Maybe you've shot a lot of beautiful cakes recently... figure out how you can turn that into a story Think about any bloopers or funny stories that have popped up recently. Think about if there's any chance you can turn that funny story into an article. Take 15-20 minutes once a week and catch up on current events in the wedding field & try to find a way to write a spinoff piece focusing on something that's been in the news recently. Listen to the full episode to hear even more awesome tips from Meghan! Related Links: OFD Consulting Two Bright Lights Help A Reporter Out Download from iTunes Here Download from iTunes Here
