When we can truly appreciate this fact, I think we will be moving ever closer to real relationship with the body, the self and the heart, rather than sitting in constant discouragement or self critique about the ever elusive notion of "one day I will get there in my practice". What are some of the things that you don’t realize are impacting your stress? Learn more about the not-so-obvious things in your day-to-day life that impact your hormones and adrenal health. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode119. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Secret stressors: Blood sugar swings Inadequate protein Oxidative stress Inflammation Dehydration Poor oxygen delivery Essential fatty acids   Key Takeaways: Insulin and cortisol work hand in hand to bring your body into balance as you experience sugar swings all day long. Overshooting your carb tolerance is eating too many carbs in one sitting. At a minimum, somewhere around 90-100 grams of protein per day is recommended for women. Protein is what’s going to stabilize your blood sugar and satiate you so that you don’t overeat and end up overshooting your carbs. When you have excessive inflammation in your body, it quickly creates a stress burden on all of your hormonal systems. Oxygen is the fountain of youth. Without oxygen, you not only feel cold and tired but pretty much every tissue in your body is going to suffer big time. Essential fatty acids help us better adapt to stress, and help with adrenal fatigue.   Action Step: Balance out your meals appropriately with protein, fat, and fiber. Increase your protein intake if you’re not eating enough of it. Get a high-sensitivity CRP test for inflammation, and get on an anti-inflammatory protocol. Drink 3-4 liters of water a day. Supplement with fish oil.   Samantha said: “Our modern life stressors expose us to much more oxidation, and our antioxidant system can really get overwhelmed.” “If you think of a hormone as a key and a receptor as a lock, inflammation is like sticking gum over the keyhole, making it harder for your hormones to bind to their specific receptor and create an effect inside your cell.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements: We are launching the Healthy Hormones Monthly Recipe Club for $9 a month. Certified nutrition consultant and owner of the popular Keto blog, Grass Fed Girl, Caitlin Weeks talks about why we should think about doing the carnivore diet and puts us up to the challenge. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode118 Topics Discussed in this Episode: The carnivore diet and its benefits Why Caitlin started to implement the carnivore diet What a day in the life of eating carnivore looks like Being on the carnivore diet during pregnancy   Key Takeaways: The carnivore diet is basically eating anything that comes from an animal.  A lot of people who come into the carnivore diet are people who have an autoimmune disease. The carnivore diet is the ultimate elimination diet. You can easily identify which foods you’re sensitive to. Any kind of discomfort you’re having while on the carnivore diet is going to be helped by taking in electrolytes or salt.   Action Steps: If you’re going to do the carnivore diet, start doing it with 0 carbs. To get the best results, don’t include too much dairy on your diet. Treat dairy as a condiment. Anytime you have lean meat, you have to add fat to it. Any kind of discomfort you’re having while on the carnivore diet, it’s going to be helped by salt.   Caitlin said: “You can’t ever regulate your hormones if you’re not detoxing properly.” “If you’re struggling with digestion and you’ve tried everything… experiment and see if it could be helped with [the carnivore diet].”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements: If you’re looking for an amazing community to connect with and a group of women that are all on their journey to healing and optimizing their health and their hormones, join our Healthy Hormones for Women Podcast Private Community on Facebook.   If you haven’t downloaded our FREE 5 Day Sugar Detox Challenge yet, download it now! How can you optimize your brain? How does sleep play a role in this? Find out as Dr. Paul Hrkal shares some amazing strategies for optimizing your brain health. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode117 Topics Discussed in this Episode: The most important factors for optimizing the brain  The role of sleep, hormones, and the gut in optimizing brain health Revamping your sleep routine and hygiene The benefits of melatonin and personalizing its dosage The different types of magnesium supplements and their benefits Nutrition hacks for better focus and concentration Fixing concussions   Key Takeaways: Shift work, especially where you’re always working nights, is very detrimental to your health. Melatonin is a neuro antioxidant, so it not only helps you fall asleep but it also helps protect your brain from some of the damaging effects that might occur from being exposed to all kinds of different things. It also has beneficial effects on inflammation. In general, a melatonin spray works better than tablets. Fueling your brain the right way is key to improving focus and concentration. Hormones play a big role in neurochemicals and neurotransmitters. When it comes to brain health, sleep, and chronic pain, the stress hormones especially play a big role. Our bodies always want to have this balance between action and rest/recovery/digest/repair. A lot of the chemicals that your brain uses are produced by your gut microbiome. At any given point, 40% of what’s in your bloodstream has been produced by bacteria. Concussions can happen to anybody, not just athletes.    Action Step: If you’re doing shift work and your health issues continue to stack up, consider looking for alternative work. Use melatonin to help you get back to your sleep routine after doing shift work. Observe proper sleep hygiene. Take a magnesium supplement. Eat more fiber. Remove from your diet the things that continue to irritate your gut lining.   Paul said: “If I’m going to get at the root cause of people’s health issues, I need to have the ability and the structure to be able to do that and not be limited by a cookbook style.” “If you get 4 or 5 hours of sleep, that’s like driving drunk. You’re almost like inebriated. That’s the impact of short-term sleep deprivation.”   Thanks for listening! Have you ever used cannabis, CBD, or medicinal mushrooms for healing? Author of The Rebel's Apothecary, certified health coach, and creator of the wellness blog Healthy Crush, Jenny Sansouci talks about the healing magic of these three things. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode116 Topics Discussed in this Episode: The story of Jenny’s dad using cannabis, CBD, and medicinal mushrooms throughout his cancer treatment What CBD is and how it’s different from THC The benefits of using cannabis, CBD, and mushrooms What the endo-cannabinoid system is Why people would want to use CBD for wellness Medicinal mushrooms and psychedelic mushrooms   Key Takeaways: In the United States, it’s federally legal to sell CBD products that have 0.3% THC or less. Anything higher than that, you have to get it from a licensed dispensary. CBD and THC are two of the most prevalent compounds in the cannabis plant and both have therapeutic benefits. If they’re in a product together, they can boost each other up. CBD helps with sleep, anxiety, and pain. THC is the compound in cannabis that gives you the high.  Inhalation is the fastest acting but lasts for the shortest amount of time. The oil tincture under the tongue can take 15-20 minutes to have an effect but lasts anywhere from 4-6 hours. An edible or a capsule will take longer to set in because it has to go through your digestive system but it lasts longer.   Action Step: Consider using CBD to help you with sleep, anxiety, and pain.   Jenny said: “The more CBD in the product and the less THC, the less likely you are to get high.” “That’s why I wanted to put them in one book, mushrooms and cannabis, because the stigma is changing so much… they can be very therapeutic if we learn how to work with them correctly.”   Thanks for listening! How can you use your intuition to bring your hormones into balance? Holistic nutritionist and founder of Good Witch Kitchen, Kristen Ciccolini talks about going beyond the food and how you can get off the dieting mentality. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode115 Topics Discussed in this Episode: What it means to connect to your intuition How you lose your intuition around food Using your intuition to balance your hormones Eating intentionally Meal planning Physical hunger vs emotional hunger What it means to be weight inclusive Journaling as a tool to connect to your intuition Positive body image   Key Takeaways: Connecting to your intuition means listening to your body. It’s not the easiest thing to do, but once you get the hang of it, it can lead to a lot of improvements in your health. It’s a huge stress reliever to not follow any arbitrary rules and it feels really good to give your body what it wants. That enjoyment alone can be very healing to the body. When you honor your body’s hunger signals without restricting foods you like or restricting your food intake to certain times of day, you’re eating when your body needs food so you’re regulating your blood sugar. Intuition is really just information coming into your conscious and subconscious that helps you make more informed decisions. When you continuously use it to make food decisions that feel good, your hormones will eventually fall back into balance. Eating with intention allows you to enjoy the experience more because you’re more present. Having a positive image is separating yourself from what other people expect of you.    Action Step: Listen to what your body is telling you in terms of hunger and all different areas of your health. Acknowledge that time is a construct. There is no reason that you have to wait a certain time of day to have a meal. Practice eating intentionally. Plan your meals. Practice journaling. Clean out your social media feed and get rid of anything that doesn’t make you feel good or gets you in that comparison trap.   Kristen said: “For some people, dieting can go beyond what’s mentally healthy for them and it causes anxiety around food -- they’re afraid to eat the wrong things.” “Meal planning can be a tool that really supports your intuitive practice because it ensures that your needs are met throughout the day.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements: Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. Are you wondering what I got in my latest DUTCH results? Dive into the episode with me as I talk about my hormone status, adrenal health, and the results I got from my most recent DUTCH test. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode114 Topics Discussed in this Episode: My 2017 DUTCH results vs my 2020 DUTCH results The strategies I’m going to implement based on my DUTCH results Key Takeaways: It’s recommended that you do your DUTCH test every year. If you haven’t done the DUTCH test before, know that it’s important that you test at the right time of your cycle. In a 28-day cycle, you would typically want to test somewhere around day 19 to day 21. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) comes from the adrenal glands and is the “mother hormone” to your sex hormones. B vitamins are involved in every neurological process in the body and taking them in methylated form is more potent. Wherever you are in your health and your hormone journey, the more you can dive in on all these different areas of your health and your life, it all has an impact and you deserve making this commitment to yourself. Action Step: Work with a practitioner who can gauge where you’re at in your cycle and help you find the right timing to get the DUTCH test.   Samantha said: “If you haven’t done the DUTCH test before, the biggest reason why I recommend it is because you can look at your hormone metabolites, which is something you can’t see through blood work.” “If you’re not sleeping, you’re not healing.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements: If you don’t have my book yet, The 30-Day Hormone Solution, grab a copy over at hormonesolutionbook.com and get over $350 in free bonuses.   Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. Are you struggling with environmental allergies? Find out some of the natural ways that you can treat them. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode113 Topics Discussed in this Episode: The link between hormones and histamine intolerance The pollen apocalypse The 411 on histamine Seasonal allergies Some common allergy symptoms and their underlying causes The side-effects of over-the-counter antihistamines What to avoid and what to include in your diet during allergy season   Key Takeaways: Where you might be in your menstrual cycle and having elevated estrogen levels during your menstrual cycle can induce a histamine release in your body. There have been increases in pollen counts in the environment as one of the effects of climate change, and experts predict that allergies will get worse in the next three to five years. Histamine is a chemical compound that’s very important in our immune system and plays a vital role in the inflammation that occurs in the body. The severity of symptoms of allergic rhinitis can vary widely from season to season and can impact your day-to-day life. Your risk of suffering from seasonal allergy symptoms dramatically increases if you have an underlying medical condition, unmanaged stress, and pregnancy. Allergies are considered disorders of the immune system. The body is over-reacting to harmless substances and produces these antibodies to attack the substance, which is what is causing your symptoms. Acupuncture can reduce the symptoms associated with seasonal allergies without any side-effects.   Action Steps: If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors and you know you’re reacting to pollen, make sure that you take a shower once you get home. If you have pets that have spent time outside the house, hose them down or wipe them down as well. Avoid the following foods that can aggravate your allergic symptoms: Alcohol Caffeine Conventional dairy Chocolate Peanuts Sugar Artificial sweeteners Processed foods Melons Bananas Cucumbers Sunflower seeds Shellfish Bottled citrus juice Echinacea Camomile Wheat Soy Dried fruits Include the following foods in your diet during allergy season: Raw, local honey Hot and spicy foods like cinnamon, cayenne, cayenne pepper, ginger, onion, garlic, etc. Bone broth Probiotic-rich foods like kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi, and raw cheese and other raw organic dairy products Pineapple Apple cider vinegar Swiss chard Carrots Yams Beets Cabbage Wild-caught salmon Good quality poultry Organic grass-fed beef and lamb Fresh herbs and spices Dried herbs Horseradish Take supplements that will help to fight allergies: Spirulina Quercetin Butterbur Probiotics Vitamine A Bromelain Zinc Stinging nettle Use a Neti pot to relieve nasal congestion and flush out mucus. Use essential oils. Get acupuncture. Stay hydrated. Shower before bed. Wash your clothes and your bedding frequently. Consider replacing your carpets at home. Do you want to know more about the superfood that not only satisfies hunger but is good for detox, inflammation, energy, and gut health? Catharine Arnston is on the show to talk about spirulina and chlorella, the power couple for health and wellness. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode112 Topics Discussed in this Episode: What are algae The benefits of spirulina and chlorella and their differences Why chlorella is great for cleansing and detoxifying  Getting rid of the lead in chlorella Spirulina for babies and pets Spirulina dosage Fighting COVID-19 with algae Key Takeaways: Algae is a food group not a supplement.  Macroalgae, like seaweed and kelp, is high in fiber, usually has iodine in it, and doesn’t have a lot of nutrients. Microalgae is microscopic and it’s everywhere. Spirulina and chlorella belong to this category. Spirulina is the blue-green algae that has remarkable healing capabilities. It satisfies your hunger, gives you energy, and improves your mental focus Spirulina has the highest concentration of protein in the world. It has 3x the amount of protein as steak, and it’s already in amino acid form. It also has the highest concentration of all the B vitamins. Spirulina is a vasodilator and helps your body release nitric oxide. Spirulina is second only to breast milk in its concentration of an omega-6 called GLA, which is important for a baby’s brain development. Chlorella is a wellness algae that helps you recover your health. It has the highest concentration of chlorophyll in the world.    Action Steps: Consider taking spirulina and chlorella instead of vitamin supplements.   Catharine said: “There’s nothing in the world that can be more nourishing than spirulina, it’s unbelievable.”“If you don’t eat a lot of greens, chlorella is your answer because you’ll get all of this chlorophyll which is so important for your health and for your immune system.” Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements: If you don’t have my book yet, The 30-Day Hormone Solution, grab a copy over at hormonesolutionbook.com and get over $350 in free bonuses.   Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode109 Topics Discussed in this Episode: Getting diagnosed with Hashimoto’s What the symptoms of Hashimoto’s look like The reasons why Hashimoto’s develop What causes leaky gut and how it affects your body’s immune response Why you need to run a full thyroid panel What my healing journey looked like Going on a thyroid and autoimmune healing protocol  Why you should slowly re-introducing certain foods into your diet Why I stopped taking desiccated thyroid and what happened when I did Where I’m currently at in my health journey   Key Takeaways: Stress has a lot to do with autoimmune diseases, symptoms, and hormonal imbalances. The body cannot differentiate tragic stress from common everyday stress. The 3 reasons why you might develop an autoimmune disease Genetic predisposition Different environmental triggers Intestinal permeability Thyroid hormones impact leaky gut in a good way. They affect the tight junctions in the stomach and the small intestine and protect the gut mucosal lining from stress-induced ulcer formation. The higher your antibodies are, the bigger the attack on your thyroid gland. Typically 95% of cases of hypothyroidism are due to autoimmune Hashimoto’s. Don’t feel defeated by your lab results. There’s a lot that you can do to address your health issues.   Action Steps: If you’re experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism, make sure to get a full thyroid panel. Address both your adrenal health and your thyroid health because they are interconnected.   Samantha said: “A busy brain is a stressed brain, and I’ve definitely had my fair share of stress and overwhelm… Stress is one of those things that really exacerbated my symptoms and causing my immune system to kind of go a bit haywire.” “Your adrenals and your thyroid speak to each other… Always work on healing and supporting your adrenals because that, in turn, will also optimize your thyroid.” Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements:  Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. Are you struggling with any digestive issues that could be affecting your hormones and overall health? Former opera singer turned nutritionist and gut expert Alyssa Labrecque is on the show to talk about beating IBS and other gut issues, and how you can optimize your gut health. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode108 Topics Discussed in this Episode: Why gut health is important Why you might be experiencing digestive issues and when do you need to start worrying about them What gut maintenance looks like Why maintaining your minerals is important How the gut is connected to your hormones and hormonal imbalances The symptoms of SIBO and how you might get it The Low FODMAP Diet What to look for when purchasing probiotics   Key Takeaways: You should be pooping two to three times per day. You should be pooping in quantity from your elbow to your wrist every single day. You can carry up to 20 pounds of poop in your colon, and if you’re not eliminating all that poop, that’s going to affect not only your gut but also your hormone health. Maintenance of your gut has to happen, otherwise, gut issues will start to snowball and affect other bodily systems. When it comes to gut issues, mineral deficiencies can have a big role in the symptoms that you’re experiencing. Hormonal imbalances are a symptom and we need to understand what’s causing them to happen in the first place. Otherwise, we’re just managing the symptom and we’re not preventing or reversing a health issue or regaining quality of life. If there’s a hormone imbalance going on, there’s usually a bacterial imbalance. Action Steps: Make sure to maintain your good bacteria, your enzymes, and the integrity of your gut, i.e. preventing leaky gut from occurring. Get your mineral levels tested and see what minerals you need.   Alyssa said: “It’s incredible to see what some of our daily habits or how some of our daily habits might be impacting us.” “Supplementing is important but also understanding how can I ensure that I’m absorbing these nutrients that I’m depleted in.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements:  Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. Different wavelengths of light do different things to the body. Ultraviolet light, for example, stimulates vitamin D production in humans, and red light was found to be rejuvenating to the skin. Some of the benefits of red light therapy include Benefits to the skin Relieves joint pain Reduces inflammation Enhanced muscle recovery Enhanced athletic performance Benefits to the hormones Benefits to the microbiome Hair regrowth Cognitive benefits Inflammation reduction is probably the biggest benefit of red and near-infrared exposure that’s been documented to date. Inflammation is the root cause of almost every chronic disease in the body.   Action Steps: Get adequate exposure to sunlight. Consider getting red light therapy. When getting red light therapy, make sure there’s clinically proven wavelengths, that the coverage area is that, and that the intensity is there.   Wes said: “It’s really amazing how giving your body exposure to these wavelengths of red and near-infrared has a systemic effect across the whole body in such a positive way. It’s almost kind of like a multivitamin.” “Not all red light is created equal. Even though they can have the same wavelengths and clinically proven wavelengths, the intensity needs to be there.”   Thanks for listening! Just because they recommend this one medication or one approach, it doesn’t mean that it’s the only approach. Your body has this incredible innate ability to heal. If you are feeding it the right food and taking care of it in the right way, you don’t need to rely on medications. Staying in one direction and keeping it going is so important to success.    Action Steps: Tune in to your body and know more about it. Learn to honor your body and understand your period. Seek out second or third opinions. Don’t just go with the allopathic approach but seek out naturopathic approaches and functional medicine. Find a mentor that you can reach out to and have a comfortable conversation with. Invest in yourself. Build a team of people that can support you in your journey. What is the impact of estrogen dominance on women over 40? What happens when you transition from estrogen dominance to estrogen absence? Certified health coach Maria Claps shares her expertise and knowledge about this subject to give us an episode that’s packed with valuable information. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode103 Topics Discussed in this Episode: Estrogen dominance and how it changes in women as they age What happens when your estrogen starts to drop off The different symptoms and problems that can arise with low estrogen The best way to make the transition from estrogen dominance to estrogen absence Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and when you should consider it The DUTCH test Bioidentical hormones vs synthetic hormones Key Takeaways: Estrogen dominance is when your estrogen is out of balance with your progesterone. It essentially tends to be a progesterone deficiency. Women can go from estrogen dominance to estrogen absence at some point in their 40s and they don’t always know when that shift has occurred. You need a good, robust amount of estrogen at about the 12th day of your cycle in order to ovulate, and when you ovulate, you get progesterone. When your estrogen lowers, you can experience symptoms like vaginal dryness, but flashes, and mood issues. Action Steps: Learn more about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Cut down your carbohydrates. Exercise according to your adrenal capacity. Maria Claps: “Your sex hormones in balance will make for much easier weight loss.” “My number one tip for women that are in that menopausal transition is to stop eating so many carbohydrates… You simply do not have the metabolic bandwidth, with age, to be eating copious amounts of carbohydrates.” Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements:The Metabolic Reset program is now ON SALE! Do you want to know more about hormone health and the importance of lab testing? Founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN) Reed Davis is here to talk about hormones and the common denominators in labs when it comes to hormone testing. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode101. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Hormone health and why hormones are important to the body What the hormones are in charge of in your body Metabolic chaos and the different hormonal symptoms you might be experiencing Natural things that you can implement to balance out your hormones Cellular health Hormone tests and the common denominator in lab testing   Key Takeaways: Hormones are messengers and signals that float around the body. What the endocrine system does is it sends out these messengers, and wherever there’s a receptor for that hormone, you get an effect. Hormones are incredibly important when it comes to bone density. If you’re stressed out all the time, this idea of balance between good bacteria and bad bacteria goes out of whack. As far as nourishment goes, you need to eat the right combination of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. And those ratios are really critical in terms of producing energy.  Whether or not to take bio-identical hormones might depend on how old you are. People who are really old generally feel much better and function better if they’re taking bio-identical hormones. The general principles of health-building involve corrective diet, rest, exercise, stress reduction, and supplementation.   Action Steps: Don’t just cram down a bunch of supplements. Rather, make sure you don’t get exposed to the virus that’s going around. Build a good, strong resistance to things. This boils down to being healthy. Eat right. In other words, eat good, nutritious food.   Reed said: “If you lived yourself into trouble -- you ate yourself into it, you lacked-of-sleep yourself into it, stressed yourself into it -- then you can reverse that every step of the way. You just need someone with a system to follow.” “A sense of wellbeing should go along with being well-nourished. It should nourish your brain as well.” Thanks for listening! Why are house rules important? My man, Gaetan Boutin, joins me in this 100th episode, where we share our house rules and how they’ve helped us live the best life as individuals and as a couple. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode100. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Our house rules and how they’ve helped us live the best life and support each other The list of things that we wanted in our house Being conscious of using eco-friendly products Living a toxin-free life Key Takeaways: Choosing your mattress is very important because a lot of the mattresses out there lets off a gas and you’ll end up breathing in chemicals while you’re sleeping. It’s nice to have artwork that resonates and means something to you. When it comes to infrared saunas, you want to make sure the wood doesn’t have any glues or stains or sealers. And with the infrared elements that heat, get the ceramic ones. An infrared sauna is an incredible health tool and a very good investment. Plants in the house help to purify the air and boost your mood. When it comes to moving to a new house, what you should start with first is your cleaners, like what you use to clean your house with and what you do your laundry in. A cluttered space is a cluttered mind. A clutter-free space sets your mind at ease.   Action Steps: Get an organic mattress as well as organic sheets. Be conscious of local and reclaimed wood. Support local artists by buying their artworks for your walls. Invest in an infrared sauna. Build a home gym. Get a water filtration system. Be conscious of the products that you use to clean your house and everything in it, your clothes, and your body. Keep your space clutter-free. Gaetan said: “As the sun starts to go down… we start to dim our lights as well. We do our best to mimic mother nature and the cycle of mother nature.”  Samantha said: “If something needs to get done, we just do it. There is no bickering at each other about it… We just try to be conscious of having harmony in the house and being kind to each other.”   Thanks for listening! Hi guys! I’m sure you’ve noticed we’ve taken a break from the podcast this past month but I wanted to pop back in with this short episode in which I was joined by Haleigh DeRocher of Sweet Sequels. Black Friday is literally upon us even though it’s only Thursday evening as I’m recording this, and Haleigh’s etsy shop is one of my favorite places to find unique bookish gifts and she’s running a lovely sale so be sure to check her shop out! And before we jump into the episode I wanted to remind you that the Tea with Tolkien pop up shop is only open for only TWO more days — we’ll close at the end of the day on November 30th! We’ve got our Hobbit at Heart hoodies and mugs and Christmasy totes and onesies and more, so check it out — I’ll leave the link in the show notes or you can just go to etsy.com/shop/teawithtolkien. We’re also running a Small Business Saturday / Black Friday sale so you can save $20 off orders of $100 or more with code FRIDAY20 or get 10% off your entire order with code SAVE10. So a little bit more about Haleigh. She’s a super talented artist who focuses on creating pieces inspired by her favorite books, so of course there are tons of references to Tolkien and C.S. Lewis as well as plenty of other authors in her shop. I’ve been following her on instagram for years now and I was so excited when she agreed to create the beautiful cover art for my Lord of the Rings companion journal and devotional, To Middle-Earth and Back Again. It turned out so well and since we had this connection, I wanted to talk to her for just a little bit about her art and such. I hope you’ll grab a cup of tea and enjoy this conversation!Haleigh’s Etsy Shop: Sweet Sequels Recommended Reading

Welcome to another Q&A episode! This time, I answer your questions about navigating the diet dogma, the link between irregular cycles and hypothyroidism, the things you need to consider to support your thyroid, and how to deal with fibroids. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode71. Topics Discussed in this Episode: How to navigate all the diet dogma that are out there The link between irregular cycles and hypothyroidism What the thyroid hormone does to your body The 5 things you need to consider to help support your thyroid How to deal with fibroids Key Takeaways: It can be so confusing when we are bombarded every single day from all sides about how we should be eating. The thing is, nobody knows how you should be eating but YOU. If you are going to go vegan or vegetarian, make sure you have variety in your diet and not just relying on grains, beans, and legumes. When it comes to choosing which diet to follow, it comes down to what makes the most sense for you and how you feel best. Hypothyroidism and the menstrual cycle are intimately tied together. While the thyroid hormone isn’t a sex hormone, it does play a key role in keeping your period regular. Every cell in your body needs the thyroid hormone, including your brain and your ovaries. It’s essential for follicle development in the ovary, which is a very necessary step in ovulation. The 5 areas that impact your thyroid and your body overall: Heavy metals  Stealth and latent infections Environmental toxicities Emotional trauma and chronic stress Nutrient deficiencies Fibroids are a symptom, not a root cause. And no matter how big or small your fibroids are, you always want to address the root cause.   Action Steps: Tune in to your body. When it comes to how you should be eating, only YOU know what’s right for you.  Do not get caught up in the diet dogma. At the end of the day, you just have to experiment and see what works for you. Make sure that you’re getting your thyroid tested and you’re getting a full panel, and then work with a practitioner who can look at those tests and assess where you might need support. Support your thyroid. Make sure you’re on the right medication or supplementation. Address your adrenals and your stress. Make sure you’re eating an anti-inflammatory whole foods diet.   Samantha said: “Healing can come in many different forms. But this is why, at the end of the day, it really comes down to experimentation. And it also comes down to finding a practitioner who can best guide you because sometimes we just can’t figure it out on our own.” “Sleep and stress go hand in hand. If you are chronically stressed, you are probably not getting good enough sleep -- deep quality sleep. And if you’re not sleeping, you’re not healing.”   Thanks for listening!   Important Announcements: The Dutch Test Program is now available in our online clinic! Get ready for some breakthrough research-based information that, I believe, is revolutionary for hard-training climbers! The topic is sinew training—that is, new training and nutritional interventions shown to promote tendon, ligament, and muscle matrix strength and health. We all know how hard climbing (and training) is on the flexor tendons and ligament pulleys of the fingers, as well as the elbows and shoulders; so what could be more valuable to climbers than strategies to improve sinew health, strength, and performance? This is an information-rich podcast that might require a couple of listens...to determine how you can best apply and benefit from this new material. The next three podcasts will expand on this topic with details on specific training interventions for strengthening (and rehabbing) sore or tweaked tendons and pulleys. If you are a proactive, early adapter kind of person, then this is cutting-edge information I'm sure you'll be all over...like chalk on a crux hold! A final note: If you enjoy this podcast, then please share it with a friend, post to social media, or write a review. Thank you! Rundown 1:00 – Introduction to a new series of podcasts on sinew training—how to develop stronger, stiffer, healthier tendons and ligaments. This is the first of four episodes in the series…breaking new ground that I feel is revolutionary for climbers. 3:00 – Tendons and ligaments are not inert—they change and adapt to training in adulthood, but at a much slower rate than muscles do. And, sinew training requires unique training modalities and nutritional interventions. PhysiVāntage 5:20 – A quick rundown of the next 3 episodes in this series….and the exciting ground I’ll be covering. 7:00 – Eric gives a brief introduction of himself and his background for new listeners. Additional comments of recent advances in training for climbing. 10:10 – A reflection on last year’s series of podcasts on Energy System Training—powerful material for intermediate, advanced, and elite climbers. If you haven’t already, listen to these podcasts! # ??? 13:00 – Introduction to sinew training…and the exciting new sport science I’m bringing to the climbing world in this series of podcasts. 15:30 – The importance of training to avoid injury and stay healthy, so that you can reach your goals! There’s a huge cost to injuries…lost seasons, missed competitions, setbacks and lost seasons. 20:00 – There are decades of knowledge gathered and distributed on muscle training and adaptations…but until recently there’s little research and scant instruction on sinew training. 23:00 – The importance of staying curious! Embracing and applying the latest research is key to progress and breakthroughs in most complex fields/endeavors. 28:00 – Three findings of my two years of research into sinew health and sinew training. 28:30 – Finding #1: Sinew is plastic. Tendons, ligaments, and extracellular muscle matrix change, adapt, and remodel very slowly…and you can play a role in this process! 34:00 – Distinct training and nutritional interventions do influence sinew health, strength, and performance. 35:00 – Finding #2: Tendons can hypertrophy. In certain situations, chronic mechanical loading can lead to slightly hypertrophy over years of exercise. Research has documented that the finger flexor tendons of veteran climbers are up to 50% thicker than non-climbers. 39:00 – Hypertrophy results from long-term training stimulus that slightly degrades collagen…followed by a rise in collagen synthesis during a recovery period of 48 to 72 hours. This cyclic process will gradually build stronger connective tissues given appropriate mechanical loading and rest periods. Nutrition plays an important role in the process, too—more on this in a bit! 41:35 – Sinew has poor blood flow compared to muscles…and there’s scant blood flow to sinew after training. 44:45 – Homeostasis perturbation from long-term overtraining (under-resting and perhaps poor nutrition) leads to disorganized and damaged collagen fibrils…that may be the root cause of the sudden “surprise” finger pulley tweak or onset of painful tendons in the elbows and shoulders. 48:15 – Finding #3: There is a proven nutritional intervention that increases collagen synthesis in connective tissues…and can support sinew recovery and strengthening. Research by Keith Baar and Greg Shaw has shown a doubling of collagen synthesis with vitamin C enriched hydrolyzed collagen consumed 30 to 60 minutes before exercise. 55:30 – Why nutrients consumed after exercise aren’t as effective for nourishing tendons. Synovial fluid diffusion during mechanical loading is the primary method of nourishment to sinew—thus, consuming a glycine and proline rich food before training is the best method of “feeding” sinew. 59:20 – My morning ritual for optimally feeding the tendon and ligaments of my fingers, arms and shoulders—15 minutes to stronger tendons. Supercharged Collagen works! 1:03:00 – You are playing a role in your tendon health…every day! Cease the opportunity to play an active role in the process. 1:04:10 – Introducing PhysiVāntage!  Our flagship product is Supercharged Collagen. Based on the research of Drs. Baar and Shaw, this is the most advanced tendon and ligament support supplement on the market. Use it daily to get a PhysiVantage! What drives your attitude towards food? Do you sometimes resort to stress eating or emotional eating? How can we become intuitive eaters? Nutritionist and emotional eating coach Rachel Molenda shares her knowledge about all these and more. Topics Discussed in this Episode: Why we need to understand the emotions that are driving our behaviors towards food before we tackle nutrition Why intuitive eating is the most sustainable eating style The steps towards intuitive eating that Rachel implemented for herself Where to begin to address emotional eating How Rachel brings the nutritional aspect to emotional eating in her practice Why chasing a number on a scale is detrimental Enjoying food while traveling Steps that you can take towards practicing body neutrality and intuitive eating Key Takeaways: People have a deeply-rooted emotional connection to food, and until we unlock what’s actually driving our behaviors towards food, treatment plan aren’t going to matter. The problem with nutrition sometimes is we’re either doing it right and we’re being healthy, or we’re doing it wrong and we’re being unhealthy. No one makes room for the in-between or that flexible zone, which leads to a lot of negative reactive behavior. Emotional hunger can be anything from needing more socialization or needing more fun or needing more stress-relief. Intuitive eating disregards any restrictive diet plan that’s out there. It’s ultimately saying to push those diets aside because your body knows what is best. Weight loss as a measure of health doesn’t make sense. There are so many other determining factors of health.   Action Steps: Become an intuitive eater, find your food freedom, and eat in a way that makes you feel good, that doesn’t feel restrictive or makes you feel crazy about food. Move away from using food as a crutch and understand how you’re using it. If you’re an emotional eater, get a coaching support. Keep a food journal or a diet diary. Find foods that you genuinely enjoy. Practice self-love and self-compassion. Rachel said: “If body love or body positivity isn’t accessible to you on any given day, practice body neutrality. Which is essentially saying you don’t have to love the crap out of your body right now, but let’s not hate it either... Let’s start on a foundation of self-love and respect.” “There’s a lot of pressure from maybe social media… you know, that comparison is very much there.  But comparison is also the thief of joy.” Thanks for listening! Are you having hormonal issues that you’re looking to overcome? How can you start eliminating the symptoms that you’re having? My Summer Hormone Detox Program may just be what you need! Find out what it’s all about and get the support that you’re looking for! Topics Discussed in this Episode: What my Summer Hormone Detox Program is all about Who my Summer Hormone Detox Program is for All the goodies that you can get from my Summer Hormone Detox Program What you can expect from the Hormone and Support Masterclass Key Takeaways: The Summer Hormone Detox Program is a program that uses nutrition as a foundation. You get a 7-day detox meal plan that works specifically to detox out excess estrogen, support liver detoxification and support your thyroid. Your hormones need fat to function and they also balance and stabilize your blood sugar, so you really do need to include those healthy fats in your diet. Following the meal plan for 7 days doesn’t mean that you’re going to eliminate all your symptoms in 7 days. It’s about creating that foundation so that you can start eliminating these symptoms over time. The more frequently we eat throughout the day, the more we spike our blood sugar and the more chances of causing imbalanced hormones and putting on weight. Action Steps: Make a commitment to spend more time outdoors and get your daily dose of Vitamin D. Enjoy Mother Nature by going outside and breathing in fresh air, and maybe getting your feet on the grass or swimming in the lake. Support your liver in the detoxification process by giving it the amino acids that it needs and getting in lots of antioxidants in your diet. Cut back on snacking and just stick to eating three meals a day. But if you really can’t help it, choose the right snacks that are going to help support and balance your blood sugar. Samantha said: “It’s really about empowering you so that you can better understand your hormonal health and your physiology and really make empowered choices for yourself… It’s really about creating this trickle-down effect so that we can all heal and support each other…” “When it comes to balancing hormones, what goes on the skin goes in. And we really need to support our hormonal health by ditching the beauty care chemicals and the toxins.” Thanks for listening! I hope to see you in the Summer Hormone Detox Program! What does preconception planning look like, and when is the best time to start? Toronto-based author, speaker, nutritionist, and founder of the Academy of Culinary Nutrition Meghan Telpner shares her own experience with preconception planning, miscarriage and pregnancy, and post-pregnancy. Hopefully, you, too, will be empowered to become your own best health expert and be inspired to find your own unique path to optimal health. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The UnDiet revolution How Meghan’s own diet transitioned from diet to undiet Meghan’s experience with miscarriage What preconception planning looks like The essentials you need to have during pregnancy How to manage your diet post-pregnancy Diet for babies Key Takeaways: The best time to start to start preconception planning is right now. There are people who have healthy vegan pregnancies, but if your body is not getting the fats that you need and your body is asking for more protein and fat, it can be really challenging. It’s important not to deny what your body is naturally trying to communicate that it needs and to follow what you feel is best for you and your baby. Through anecdotal evidence, it seems that a miscarriage is incredibly common before sustaining a healthy pregnancy. The pill is completely toxic and will mess with your hormones potentially for the rest of your life unless you take active measures to clean up the damage that it does nutrient-wise and hormonally-wise. The most effective way that women detoxify is through the placenta, into their unborn child, so the least amount of chemicals that end up in your body, the less work you have to do immediately before becoming pregnant. The microbiome of your gut becomes the first microbiome of your child. If you’re bringing a human into the world, the least you can do is get the toxins out of your life. Action Steps: Modify your diet according to what works best for you. Detoxify and start living a clean lifestyle. Get rid of the products that contain toxic and unsafe ingredients. Always have good protein sources and healthy snacks in your pantry. Meghan said: “I think that if we can bring humor and fun and joy into the process of living our lives, that’s beyond half the batter towards feeling good inside and out.” “The time to start preconception planning is today. It doesn’t matter how old you are. If you’re 15 or you’re 25 or you’re 35, if you want to have children in your lifetime, you have to start now.” Thanks for listening! Firewalls Don't Stop Dragons Podcast

Passwords are the bane of our modern existence. Why the hell haven’t we figured out a better way to prove who we are? Today is the first in a series of educational shows that I’ve dubbed Castle Defense 101: Defending Your Digital Drawbridge. In our inaugural session, we’ll take a deep dive into the problem of passwords. What really makes a good password and how do I choose one? How can I possibly remember all these passwords? How often do I need to change my password? Why do we even need passwords, anyway - can’t we just use fingerprints or something? I will answer all of these questions and then some. I’ll even tell you why you should only ever know one single password! And finally, I’ll tell you how you can win a free copy of my book, Firewalls Don’t Stop Dragons!
